December running total – 13.06
2017 running total - 1950.68 miles
Nominal challenge goal: 80 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Run 8K of cross country at Club Nationals on December 9. We don't need no steenkin' speed goals, just finish the race.
Today's notes – Today's assignment was a test run of "no more than 2 miles." I went out before lunch in the heat of the day, at 18.5º F according to my porch thermometer (-7.5º C). Wanted to get out before the predicted snow showers, because the road in front of my house is clear and I could wear road shoes instead of trail shoes.
The cold weather is a *kitten* for anything that's hurt. I could feel my left quads from the first step, though the spot that ached was different from what had been problematic before. It took most of a mile for that to fade to something kind of sort of acceptable for running. The plan was to run to one end of the street, run back to the other end, then back to my driveway. Made it the long way to the far end, and back past my driveway before some of the aches became random mild stabs and my gait was affected so much I couldn't deny it. Turned around and came back to my driveway, finishing 1.56 miles in 13:47 with pretty even splits on the pace.
So . . . it's not what I was hoping for. I'm clearly not totally healthy, and I can't tell how much better it might have gone in warmer weather. Walking around afterward, I could feel the quad, but mostly in a spot that wasn't the problem before. I was able to carry a laundry basket down the stairs, but I could feel the quad while doing so. A few hours later, it feels more weak than hurt; but tomorrow needs to be a rest day. Probably Monday as well. A 7.5 mile race on New Year's Day is out of the question, and a half marathon on January 6 will happen only if I have a miraculous recovery from this point. I may end up bagging the entire Freezeroo series, bummer.
So how did I do versus goals? Totally failed on the nominal mileage goal for December. Failure on the goal of getting healthy. I did run 8K of cross country at Club Nationals; in 20-20 hindsight, that was even stupider than it looked at the time.
And in 2017, I ran more miles than any previous year. By 7 miles or so. I think I'd rather have fewer miles and more consistency, but right now I'm struggling with getting there from where I am.
See you all on the January thread.

I almost gave up on my run today. with all the interruptions it almost felt like it just shouldn't happen but I pressed on an got it done. I took Hobbes the Vizsla out for the 1st mile or so of warm up and he was definitely not feeling up to it so we headed home. I headed out to do the rest of it by myself and every time I got started it seemed like I got interrupted by my family, calling to talk, needing information, etc... I really just wanted to tell them 'Saturday mornings are for long runs, leave me alone'. Of course I couldn't do that but I really wanted to
I am happy to hit my goal but really thought I might get to 110 miles. I also didn't hit my goal of 1500 miles for the year. I made it to 1187 which surprised me, much closer to 1200 than I thought I was and this was just my 3rd lowest year out of 6 - I actually thought it would be my lowest.
On to 2018! Setting my yearly goal again to be 1500!

6 km along the River bank. My Garmin did not like the -32C temp and froze up after 1.5km. So I had to import an equivalent run from my historical files to get the approximate distance.
It was actually a very comfortable run as I had consulted my Clothing Log for an equivalent Temperature run and dressed based on my historical notes.
Light Wicking Tech long sleeve, Mid weight long sleeve fleece and MEC Cycling Jacket.
Light weight Fleece pants, Mid weight tights, MEC Tech Climbing pants, Goretex shell.
Balega socks and Smart Wool Ski Socks ( calf high ).
Fleece Neck warmer/tube, Fleece Toque-e/w ear flap extensions, Mitts with fleece liner.
At the North end of Town I had Frost Snow ( humidity dropping out of the air due to the cold ) and at the south end perfectly clear with zero wind. The climbing pants were actually visibly damp in places and the fleece top had frostical's on it under the coat. Could have left the MEC Climbing pants at home and still been comfy. Not to mention traditional Eye lash Icicles.
This puts me at 1293.8km for the year, which means I need 6.2 km 7.2 km tomorrow to get to 1301 km for the year. December has been my worst month ever, I only have 48.5 km for the month so an all time low since I started tracking. Have to really get on my horse/schedule for January as February 4 is the first local event for the year then 2 weeks later ( Feb 18 ) the HypoThermic HM in Edmonton. I already have 2 weekends for cross training ( downhill ski trips ) so it really only gives me 3 weeks of Training before the Feb 4 Chilly Willy HM in Grande Prairie. A wise person might drop back to a 10k for this one to reduce injury risk and keep the Hypo HM in Edmonton.JessicaMcB wrote: »Had my gait analysis done at the fancy city run shop and bought new trail shoes (praise Jesus!) before we took the girls to Galaxyland. @JessicaMcB So I have to ask which shop? as there are quite a few in the city, some I haven't made it into yet. 109st Running Room has never failed me and there back stock room - love the way they just let us runners walk through it browsing for shoes at steep discounts. I mean when you drop $100.00 ( cdn ) and get 2 pairs of shoes and socks it's a wwwwwin. Most stores have a barricade around the stock room like it some international secret world. Last time I was in there I found matching Trail shoes ( Saucony Peregrine 4 ) in Bright Red. I think they are at P8 now so they were a few years old but they work for me, I love that the Heel thread pattern ( = Downhill gripper ) is oriented the opposite of the Toe ( = Uphill Gripper ) or at least that's my viewpoint.
@MobyCarp Sorry that the " Test Run" didn't go as hoped. You have been very patient and smart on the recovery - training so just a little more time - I think the worst part is behind you. I remember my torn calf 2 years ago and I went a little to fast on the recovery/training cycle and put myself back on the bench so that was my lesson of slow down to get better1 -
12/30: My husband and I ran the Starry Nights 4k run. Which was 5k, for some unknown reason.
First of all, my knee that I fell on is still clicky but it doesn't seem to bother me when I run, so good enough.
Weirdly, according to both my gps and the gpses of several other runners we conferred with afterwards, the advertised 4K run turned out to be slightly more than 3.1 miles (one guy had 3.28) and thus at least 5k. This was a fun run without timers and I guess the race organizers didn't bother to measure the distance accurately?
This was a night time run through the Christmas light display at Shelby Farms, otherwise known as "the buffalo park next to the Penal Farm." It was our first run in temperatures this cold, and our first night time run that wasn't on a well-lit sidewalk. This run was to benefit the Greenline, which I hadn't run before - it's nice, they've done a good job on it, and the amenities at this park are top notch. I had a headlamp but ended up not needing it because most of the path was lit by the Christmas lights, and in the few dark places the police had cars with headlights shining on the path. The temp was supposed to be about twenty degrees F but I think was a little warmer than that - still below freezing though! I was pretty comfortable wearing fleece joggers over leggings and wool socks, with a tech shirt and a UA cool gear hoodie over my ear band, and my buff over my face. I love this hoodie, it has the best deep zipper pockets, and wearing it is like sitting in a nice warm kitchen next to the oven. The only part of me that was exposed to air was a little strip around my eyes, which was a good thing since the breeze off the lake walking to the race start (before I put my buff on) was so cold that my cheeks were stinging!
Swag was a fleece scarf with the race logo, and light up LED rings, and they were giving out glow sticks. I ran with a glow necklace and my husband had two bracelets.
There were about seven hundred runners. We started midway back in the first corral - the announcer said get in the first corral if you were "Sonic the Hedgehog fast" and I guess we were compared to the rest of the people running, since we passed about half of the people who started in front of us. But we were slow even for us, and really slow compared to actual fast people. Finished 5k in 36 minutes according to the GPS. We weren't really running hard since we wanted to be able to look at the lights, and also this course is mostly hills. Strollers and dogs were required to start farther back, and there was one young woman with a baby in a stroller who blew by us going at a really good clip - I'm guessing maybe seven minute miles or thereabouts. It's always humbling to be outrun by a stroller!
We danced around with our glow sticks to the music at the finish line and then went home and my husband made me a peppermint rum latte with cinnamon sprinkled on top. Yes, we had fun!
And that finishes me for the month, and the year. According to my stats I ran 226.66 mi this year which is exactly 226.66 mi more than I ran last year. See you in 2018!9 -
Blurry finish line photo. Our phone camera doesn't do low light well.
I was disappointed - they had hot chocolate which I can't drink but no coffee! Being a diabetic runner is kind of annoying at races, they always have tons of carbs at the finish and nothing else. In this case there was also pizza and pasta.3 -

I can imagine this being annoyance. Would it be an idea to ask in advance when you enter a race? Often these things are just ignorance and what sells most vs knowing things.
My nephew is type 1 and he can get really quite annoyed with little things like this too1 -
And December closes with a bang. I wasn't going to go running today but I realized I had signed up for a challenge and I needed to run a 8 minute mile or less. I swear if someone was watching they probably thought I was running for my life. I was pumping along so hard that when I hit the one mile mark (7:45) I didn't notice that the trail I was coming up to was closed and I tripped over the small, pretty much at ground level, "invisible" chainlink fence. Not gonna lie, I totally crawled away as low as possible. So glad I go out so early. Lol

It was actually a very comfortable run as I had consulted my Clothing Log for an equivalent Temperature run and dressed based on my historical notes.
Oh my goodness! I don't own enough clothes that would get me outside in those temps! You are a beast!

Lol
Oh, @abutcher2122 hope you are OK, but that was a great visual of you running like your life depended on it, BAM, and then slinking away hoping no one saw that. Great effort on your mile!
-10 F real temp out there right now. Think it's going to be the treadmill if anything today. Tomorrow is much the same, which makes for a tough Resolution Run. Yesterday it warmed up to almost 20 degrees F and it felt so much better, the dog and I were loving it. I was hoping we were on an upward trend but no.
Be back later with today's numbers, if any. Happy last day of 2017!4 -

December Total: 136.09 (goal 110 miles)
Finished out the year with 2 miles on the treadmill this morning. One more day of the Runners World Streak challenge to go!
Passed my December goal
1431 miles for the year - I'm not good at tracking my mileage year-to-year but I think this is comparable to the last couple of years, maybe even a little ahead. My friend that died unexpectedly from cancer this year and I signed up for the Run the Year challenge as a team to run 2017 miles in 2017. She got in 140 miles before the cancer diagnosis in March. We both kept thinking she would get back to running. Even when she had lost most of her eyesight from mini-strokes, we were talking about how we would soon be back to running together...."If you want to make God laugh, tell Him about your plans" - Woody Allen7 -

I was disappointed - they had hot chocolate which I can't drink but no coffee! Being a diabetic runner is kind of annoying at races, they always have tons of carbs at the finish and nothing else. In this case there was also pizza and pasta.
I feel you. As someone with celiac disease, I can't eat a lot of the finish line foods. Luckily, most places have fruit so I tend to grab that. Most of the carbs/pre-packaged stuff I can't have.2 -
I wanted to get my run in this morning but pollution sucks. I woke up with a stuffy nose, dry throat, and what felt like a 10-pound weight on my chest. Going to wait and see if the sun burns any of it off and go this afternoon. Had some water and my throat feels better. Nose is slowly unstuffing. Blah.1

I'm sitting at about 41 miles for the month. My goal was 50. There's no way I'll reach my monthly goal, even if I run today.
Should I run, knowing I won't be able to reach my goal? Or let it go and try again next month? (I've never ran 9 miles in a single day.) If I do run, it's cold so I'll have to resort to the dreadmill at the gym, lol.0 -

@LaurenFOB2301 I would run. The goal to me is a guideline of where I want to be the end of the month it doesn't decide if I run or not. I could make goal by running today but I know I need a rest day since my hips are sore. I won't make goal but I will feel better running tomorrow if I rest today.1 -

I think I will. I'm sure the closer I get to my goal, the better I'll feel.2 -

Great job to everyone who made goal this month, especially with so many doing it in some freezing cold temperatures that a lot are not used to in their areas. For those, like me, who did not, we will get it next month.
I'm happy with my year I ran 844 miles (almost exactly the same as last year's 845) considering that I barely ran in Feb and Mar because of injury I'm very happy actually. This coming year I really want to work on getting my speed back, not sure where it went but it went somewhere. LOL
Happy 2018 everyone.

No run for me today. It is just too cold for me. 22°f feels like 8°f. I do not have the proper clothing to run when it is this cold. I did hit my goal for December the other day so I feel good. I had 76.3 miles and my goal was 75 miles.
My overall for 2017 was 694.8 miles. I started running 9/25/16, do this is my first full year of running.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year. I'm on the couch under a blanket with my dog sleeping on my feet. I may not move much today. One good thing about being old is I don't feel obligated to do anything on New Year's eve.5 -

Went to the Y this morning and did 30 minutes running on the treadmill, then 30 minutes swimming laps in the pool. Then a little time in the whirlpool felt really good. After stopping for a good lunch (so hungry after swimming as always), I got home and took Stella out for a 50-minutes walk. It was really cold and both of us are glad to be back in and having a snack.
That gives me my 3rd highest monthly running miles total.
1191 miles run in 2017 (1917 km)
2127 miles run + walk/hike with Stella (3422 km)
