@shanaber - I think you did great for a sick person in the heat! Congratulations on your finish and I love your bling! At the St Jude 5k I had the same issue with teams of walkers side by side, very annoying. They gave out instructions in the packet pick up for what corral to get in depending on pace, and I very conscientiously got into the one just a little bit faster than my PR, and then turns out no one but me read the memo and I was completely walled in by walkers! It seems like this is a bigger problem with bigger races.
@ddmom0811 Wow your daughter is gorgeous! Sounds like the smiling served you well. Congrats on making it through the pain to finish.1 -
I made it through my HM on Sunday and it was tough. Between travel and being sick I was so not ready. It was a beautiful sunny morning and while it was good to sleep in a bit, the later start (7:45) made for a warmer run. I think it was mid 60's by the time we actually got going and mid 70's at the end. On the good side it was incredibly clear and the views were spectacular of the wetlands and ocean.
Knowing I would be running slower I started back a wave from where I would have normally. It was a good thought but it really didn't work out well. Even though I was slower and had to walk at times, I was constantly having to dart around people who would walk 3, 4 or 5 across, or just stop with no warning. There was even a couple of ladies and a man with a jogging stroller although they announced no strollers or dogs on the course. On one of the narrower parts of the course around mile 5, they were bumping into slower people with the stroller and would all stop to do something for the baby but not pull to the side - they just stopped in the middle leaving all the runners behind them to have to stop because they couldn't get by. I was so happy to finally get past them! I ran the 1st 5k a little over my normal race pace and then started to not feel well. I was coughing and had an upset stomach and just didn't want to have to throw up. At this point I was seriously asking myself what in the heck I was doing out there and why did I think this was a good idea! I managed to eat some gummy bears and felt a bit better but was afraid to try anything more. For this race you basically have two loops - on that goes up and back to the wetlands and another that goes north west along the ocean (PCH) and back. The section coming back from the wetlands loop is slightly down hill as is going outbound on the PCH loop so those sections felt pretty good. By the time I hit the turn around on PCH about mile 8.5 I was really getting tired and had to start walking more. Also on this section you are running slightly uphill, right into the sun and it felt so hot and dry. There were many water stations and everyone was dumping water on themselves as much as drinking. By about mile 10 or 11 all I really wanted to do was sit down but I knew if I stopped that would be the end for me so I just kept going. I did manage to run in the last mile or so to the finish line. My time was a good 30 mins over my time from last year and 40 mins over my HM PR.
I will run it again next year - hopefully healthy and trained for it.
I looked at my HR over the entire race and from the very beginning it was high for me (130's) and never really came down during the race even when I was walking. I thought this was pretty strange since I never felt like I was really pushing my cardiac level because my legs just felt so tired. I also ended up with a big blister on my heel - the first I have ever had in almost 6 years of running... I could feel it, even tried to get a bandaid at the aid station, but it didn't really hurt until afterwards.
Edited to add - I am so very sore and tired after this race. I can ever remember feeling the beat up... I guess that along with the HR are indicators of just how 'not ready, not healthy' I was for this race.
Before the race I was really looking forward to beer on the beach (tents in the first picture). After the race it was the last thing I wanted. So I had my banana and chocolate milk and called it done!
Requisite bling photos... 2nd medal is for running the SF HM consecutively with Surf City. Additionally for being a legacy for the race now, I also got a cotton t-shirt (not shown). I bought the hat (finally a HM hat!) and I got a previous years tech shirt for $10 (also not shown)!

@ddmom0811 – Congrats on your HM. You look more liked your daughter’s little sister than her mom! If I had waved at every car that passed on my HM this past Saturday, that would have been 6, maybe 7, vehicles – even though the roads were open to traffic. I think I saw more cattle and horses than people.
@shanaber – Congrats to you also for finishing you HM. I’ve been that miserable before where I’ve just wanted to sit down and let whatever came along pick me up. It’s no fun but you kept going – kudos to you! Nice swag too!
@amymoreorless – Hope you are on the upswing soon!
Rest day for me today so I did a 30-minute lower body workout at home this morning.

@polskagirl01 - Yum! Those look delicious! Where are you running that you need to wear a anti-smog mask? That would be tough!
I'm in Poland. At the moment I might be overreacting, as it actually hasn't been as bad as last winter, when I ran without a mask even when there were smog alerts and they were telling people to not do any exercise outside (but I was also sick all winter so probably my own fault). Mostly it is connected to home heating, so the lower the temperature, the more cheap coal people dump in their old furnaces and the worse it gets. There are times I'm running, and can literally taste the junk in the air, despite pulling a snood up over my face. A mild winter so far helps, and during the summer it doesn't seem to be a problem. The tipping point for me was coming back from vacation and smelling the stink literally minutes after driving away from the airport. I have 2 masks, one wraps the whole way around my head, and the other is smaller and has a cute little exhaust fan (charges with a phone charger!). The fan can't keep up when I'm working hard, but I figure even wearing the mask part of the time makes a difference. I can tell a huge difference when I take it off, too, so it's clearly filtering a lot of junk.
Picture was from last year, winter break, when we went to the Tatry mountains. That's not fog.
Vacation this winter break was somewhere warm. I'll go back to the mountains over the summer.7 -

Been a crazy several days for me. Few spare minutes, fewer workouts, sick kiddo, missed work. Ugh...is it spring yet?!?!
2/1 - 4 treadmill miles at Trek Class. First three-day streak in ~4 weeks. I'll take it!
2/2 - Rest day. After streak, thought it was a good idea.
2/3 - 5.1 miles outside. Nice!
2/4 - Unplanned rest day - church activities + Super Bowl + sick kid = no workout / run
2/5 - Another unplanned rest day - sick kid is worse. Doctor visit, etc.
2/6 - Kid still sick and I'm feeling pretty lousy too.
Sorry for the whine. Stay warm and keep running!6 -
@shanaber and @ddmom0811 - Way to push through the tough stuff!
@KatieJane83 - Well, yeah, of course!
@7Lenny7 - Kody rockin' the ice beard! Brrr!2 -

Nothing too exciting to report here. Another 5k on the treadmill. Keeping ahead of my goal of 5k per day on average for February so far.
@karllundy hope you all are feeling better soon. May spring come early to us all.

@shanaber Great race report! It might not be anything close to a PR, but finishing a HM under such tough conditions required a lot of willpower! Great bling
@ddmom0811 I'm sorry that your half marathon didn't go as you had hoped! But the smile-and-wave strategy sounds awesome Congratulations to your daughter!
@MNLittleFinn Sounds like your training is really paying off, running 5k pace for 2x3mi in training is really impressive!
@Starflight00 Out of curiosity, may I ask where you live? I thought I was the only one who usually doesn't get medals at races here (Switzerland), except the really huge, expensive giant events.
@amymoreorless Get well soon! I hope the doctor visit helped.
@karllundy I hope you and your kid feel better soon!

I did the same tempo workout tonight as last week "4x (5min at effort 8-8.5, 2min recovery)". I think I like time-based intervals a lot more than distance-based intervals. In the 5min intervals, I ran between 800-900m, depending on the slope, but somehow it was much for enjoyable then 4x800m would have been. Weird, right?
One thing which would drive me insane if I was OCD: my TomTom watch shows me the 5min intervals I programmed. After the upload to Strava, they turn into 4:59min laps. The same happend last week. And my 2min recoveries turn into 1:59. I'm used to the time and distance differing a bit, but I never noticed that Strava "steals" a second of each lap ^^
Last week I did some box jumps after I finished the run. I decided to try and make that a recurring thing, so after finishing the cooldown, I did 5 minutes of "agility dots" and box jumps.
Oh, another Strava thing: Do any of you ever "flag" other people's activities on Strava? I did it for the first time tonight. No, I don't stalk the local segments and get jealous whenever somebody is faster then me (most people are ), but I got a PR on a segment today and wanted to see where I am on the leaderboard, that's when I noticed the record seemed suspicious: considering that the women's world record for 400m is 47.6s, I thought it a bit off that somebody runs a 520m segment in 47s.
I had a look at the activity and saw that it comes with quite a few CRs in my neighbourhood. For example a 1100m segment in 1:41, while the 800m world record is 1:54... It's the only activity that person ever recorded, and a distance of 726.28km in 79:51:58. I'm pretty sure something isn't right! I didn't like that it messed up the leaderboards for all those segments in the area, but I'm also feeling a bit bad about "tattling"...

No run today, meetings and such2

I have been MIA all February on the last day of January I put on my shoes to go to the store and I haven't been able to walk properly since! Level 7-8 pain in the outer arch of my foot which has lead to a swollen ankle/foot, a tensor bandage, and lots of Advil. But enough "whoa is me" congrats everyone that's been racing and running, I've seen many tough races run, PRs, and lots of lovely pictures. Hopefully I'll be back up and running (haha) soon, until then I'll just try to keep up to this thread.9
-
@_nikkiwolf_ thanks. That was a 5k PR from a year ago as my reference. I have no real clue what my 5k pace would be now, but I'm assumint it would be faster0
-
Congrats to all the HM'ers this past weekend!
@_nikkiwolf_ I think you are right to flag those sorts of numbers. My 9 year old son who has a Garmin Forerunner 15 was messing around with it and managed to get "records" in all sorts of distances while we were driving from the East Coast over the holidays. He was finally annoyed that his real records weren't showing so we figured out how to delete the spurious ones! He wasn't connected to Strava, but I can see both how that could happen accidentally (I did that a few times as well and managed to delete them from Strava or make them "private") or not so accidentally. Either way, I think it is a good thing to flag.
Monday was a water walking day. Tonight I finally got around to running at 7 pm and discovered there are lots of not so friendly dogs outside in the neighborhood at that time of night. Still need to foam roll and do some PT yet tonight. I actually met with a nutritionist today about trying to deal with my inflammation from my injuries and to get some ideas to hopefully support the added training I am doing. Productive meeting so far but still waiting for some follow up resources from her.

Brought my gym bag to work and then decided it was warm enough to run outside today. At -15C it was practically balmy compared to recent temperatures. It was nice running weather (the only wind was the wind of my passage and I'm slow...) other than my glasses freezing up. Again.

This morning was nowhere near as chilly as yesterday, but I wore more layers down there and so everything was nice and toasty...no frozen nuggets for me today. Normally I would run with the group, but the group leader is out of town, and the two other runners that run decided it was a good morning to sleep in, so I got to put in a few more miles than I normally would.
Tomorrow, the temps are supposed to dip again with a chance of freezing rain...oh joy!

Congrats to all the HM champs!
Nice @MNLittleFinn!
@weat0043 no, not foot pain! The worst! Hang in
Love you guys, *kitten* hate taper. Tonight I ran to Walmart because Ben forgot stuff (road running though so I am not counting it for my purposes) and my easy effort on 5k split somehow came out to 21:37 . I only have one straight up road race all season...that might go better than expected lol.
Also RitB120 *kitten* out and dropped down to a 50k so I am no longer interested in that. @juliet3455 any sage advice on what you would run in July/early August than is NOT Sin?

I was going to ask What or who is RitB120 ?? Found it. Run in the Buff 120
I haven't done any of these and none of my local friends have but these look interesting and they are on our side of the country which is a bonus. What about your Home Province out East, with the amazing Coast Line I would think there would be some fantastic courses/events.
Seems like a lot events are dropping to 50km. Probably due to a shortage of Volunteers, Logistics and Insurance.

Just Stumbled onto this http://www.trailrunningcanada.ca/wp/trail-races/

We are rather spoiled by our Bling and medals that we get at events. I have probably dropped 10 shirts at the Goodwill/Salvation Army thrift store or Homeless shelter that I didn't like. Now socks, Gloves and Headgear I won't re-purpose unless they are really cringe worthy
@_nikkiwolf_ I have never flagged other activities - Just got tired of the same people popping back with a new profile posting the same rubbish. When you see some of the challenges and the one day distances that some claim to run - pretty obvious that they were in a train or car with their watch tracking, others might have been on a bike and then logged it as a run. So don't feel bad about "tattling".
I know my Strava has some PR false data in it - I had a Bike ride after a run and it was recorded as a run on my watch ( user error ) but I then changed it to Bike in Garmin Connect but Strava had already grabbed it and I can't find a way to delete it without deleting the whole ride and even that's not guaranteed.
So my 1km, 1 mile and 5km PR's are way lower in Strava than my True PR's.
It's unfortunate that some people's lives are so empty that they have to make up artificial results to get some type of emotional/social high. I am Proud of my 5k PR of 26:09. Slower than some - faster than some. I worked hard for it.6 -

According to Strava there's somebody swimming the asphalt path we usually run at the park.
My mile PR on mapmyrun is messed up because I forgot to stop the app when driving away. Weirdly enough, due to the road to the park having an absurd 10 mph speed limit, it's not inhumanly too fast - just too fast for me.5 -
Thanks to all for the well wishes on my HM. You guys make me feel proud even when it was terrible! Also congratulations to everyone else who ran this last weekend if I missed commenting!!
@polskagirl01 - When I was in college in So Cal we used to have days you couldn't see the buildings on campus because the smog was so bad. When my husband and I lived north and would drive back south and come over the hills into LA you could see the brown layer of crappy air over the basin and I just wanted to turn around! It is better now but I understand completely! As a runner I would totally rock that mask!
@KatieJane83 - love that meme!
@karllundy - I hope you and the kiddo feel better soon. The bugs that are out there this year are beasts!
@weat0043 - I hope your foot is ok and it isn't a stress fracture!
@HonuNui - sounds like another awesome party!! One of these days I am going to get there for it!
@rheddmobile - my PR in mapmyrun is the same - I forgot to stop my workout and it had me doing 16 miles at an incredible pace! I did edit it though to what I actually ran and the time I ran it in but it was fun to laugh about (and dream of being that fast!) at the time.4 -
@polskagirl01 I have a friend in Poland and she recently got a smog mask for running. It's got a sort of skull design on it, so it looks totally badass. She also said it was hard to breathe in, but better than breathing smog.
@_nikkiwolf_ Yes, I've flagged a couple of Strava activities.
I tend to think they're usually clueless newbies who don't realise how "important" Strava and its segments are, and have just pressed cycle instead of run, or hopped in a car.
Usually they disappear from the leaderboards quickly. But one I flagged I saw still there the other day, and it burned me up!
@JessicaMcB O. M. Flying Spaghetti Monster! Awesome time for a 5K!4 -

February 4 — 5.19 miles
February 6 — 4.23 miles
February total — 13.57/75 miles
Plans for a long run today foiled once again by icy ground conditions and lack of appropriate footwear. The path I normally would have run on was not happening today. I might just have to run my regular loop twice and call it a long run. Sounds miserable but at least it’s not the treadmill.4 -
@_nikkiwolf_ I'm in Belgium, no swag must be European thing then
Anyone here has experience with fasting? I had a 24-hour fast from Sunday dinner till Monday dinner and I'm wondering how that might affect performance... Yesterday was the worst run ever, 13:20/mile while in endurance HR zone. Legs were super heavy, I had to push myself to keep going at that ridiculous pace. Last week I ran a comparable session and pace was 12:07/mile. I did run before dinner, think last week was after...
