February 2018 Running Challenge

Go to Courses, then Create Course, then select the type of route (Running or Trail Running). There you can name your route, set your distance, and initial direction. Then it takes you to a map of where you are. Touch the map where you want to start and it churns away and comes up with a route. I just tried a 13 mile road route and it spit back a 13.76 mile route. The route it came up with seams to be ok.
I tired this for road running. Entered 15 miles and the route it gave me was 17.35 miles. It also mapped several miles along a couple of small narrow roads that are heavily traveled and don't have sidewalks. I've never seen anyone running on these roads so I don't think it uses the heat map generated by runners in this area.0 -

I occasionally put headphones in, if I'm on a not very exciting route, where I want to get some distance in and need some motivation (ie. something to forget I'm still running). But my headphones are designed to allow in ambient noise. I also make a point of acknowledging other runners/cyclists/walkers when I have them in.
I've never worn them in a race, and don't need them for pacing, but then my pacing is non-existent anyway.
Over here, most races that involve road crossings would ban them, or where safety may be an issue (randy cows or sheep). Road races generally are on closed roads, not that I'd know.
Possibly for my upcoming race it's because of the elk...

February 3 – 13.1 miles
February 4 – 6 miles
February 5 – 5 miles
February 7 – 5 miles
February 9 – 7 miles
Got up 15 minutes earlier this morning to get 7 miles in before work. Started at 4:45 am. Thankfully, I met up with a group of 4 other ladies so that helped get me out of bed and going this morning. Rain is in the forecast for all weekend here. Beats the snow any day though! I’m with you @lporter229 – ready for winter to be gone. Glad I have a trip to Florida at the end of the month although several days next week we’re supposed to have 65F degree days here in Virginia.
Upcoming Races:
February 24-25 – Gasparilla Amber Challenge (15K & 5K on Saturday; Half Marathon on Sunday)
May 6 – Pittsburgh Half Marathon

Not gonna lie, I saw someone try to pet one of the sheep once (yes, really...). It headbutted him and he flew back several feet to land in a very undignified position. Fourteen year old me thought it was hilarious...7 -

Race day tomorrow means rest day today. I sure am tired! I can't quite tell if it's my vitamin D deficiency creeping up on me again (this time last year I had a similar feeling-crappy-for-no-good-reason issue that turned out to be a severe vitamin D deficiency). I've revved up the supplements again, but obviously it's not a quick fix. I also got a Mirena a few weeks ago, which could account for feeling "off." Who knows. I've taken to eating at maintenance for a while and making sure I take my vitamins and we'll re-assess in a few weeks.
Either way, I could be racing tomorrow in the snow. It will definitely be cold-ish. In the 20's at race time. No matter, because I've trained for that, plus I look pretty awesome in my balaclava. Come at me, snow.3 -
I sometimes run with headphones and sometimes not. On the trail, never. There's just too much my head needs to focus on to have other noise in my ear. Mindless, flat runs, I enjoy having tunes, and I'll run with them during a road race and so far it's been allowed at all my races. I have two "true wireless" earbuds, so I usually just run with one side in.0

W00T! Congrats!
Yes! WOOT indeed! I love the 10k distance.1 -
I can and have run without headphones for long distances (hours), though mainly those were times when I had tech difficulties (batteries esply). But ever since I discovered Audible books... I have not been without my headphones by choice during training.
For races it really depends. If it is a short race (under an hour) and I am pushing hard for time, I will leave the books off, but still play the pace. For longer races, I start or stop the book pending on the environment, and if there are fellow runners that are chatting with me.
If a race said I could not run with them, I likely would not sign up. But that has never happened to me.
I run 90% of my training on open roads, some very busy, so that is no different for me on race day. *shrugs* running is a pretty personalized sport. Each has to do what works best for them.0 -

I don't listen to music anymore (and I used to take my discman when I first started running HAHAHA) I listen to podcasts. I learn stuffs (history and true crime mostly with some comedy). I hate listening to myself breathe, which is all I hear when I run without. Drives me nuts.
And I only use one earbud. I keep the one to to the road out.

DOMS is killing me today. Probably exacerbated by sleeping funny all night due to kids climbing into my bed and making my back hurt too. My core is getting a good workout just keeping me going. I think I will just stick to yoga today.4

we got freezing rain, followed by a foot of snow, followed by below 0* fahrenheit, im a school nurse and one would think that is enough for a school closure. I planned on adding 5 or 6 miles today, but work had other plans. I had to work, schools in session, now Im sad

2.3 miles of extreme suck. I took the day off to take Skip to the dermatologist in the morning and figured I'd spend the rest of the day to do me stuff. Well Skip was complaining she didn't feel good last night so it was blood work (for derm) at 8:00 then appt with her at 8:30, then called Skip's doctor and there at 10. I wanted to be sure it wasn't flu since she has asthma Then over an hour waiting for her prescriptions, it was and ear and sinus infection. Finally home it was 12:30 and I was tired, lazy, crappy, happy she was okay but annoyed my planned me day was messed up. It was a beautiful 60F so I set out for my run, just awful awful awful, one of those you know there is no point continuing so I headed home. Hate it to because it's supposed to rain for the next few days here.9 -

Well, my ocd tendencies couldn’t let me stop at 10 when 13 was scheduled. I went really slow, 10min miles.
I’m kinda regretting it because I now have a full blown cold in addition to a chest cough. Honestly though I could feel the cold coming on as soon as I woke up this morning. Sleeping last night was pretty miserable.
This is the cold/flu season from hell! My daughter has been battling a fever since Sunday and now we both have colds. My son came home complaining his head hurt and he has a fever too.

Well, today was one of those days where I really could have used a run (even a treadmill run- icy weather) to try and run out some attitude and anxiety, and many of those other things y’all were mentioning we run for. So, as a result, I got kinda snarky with the PT about if/when we would be running again.
Bad news, not today.
Good news: I was wearing a Bolder Boulder shirt when I got snarky with him. He asked if I were to start training in March could I be ready for that race. And I suggested it might depend on my lungs after this whole saga., but March to A 10K in May sounds like significant progress. He balked a little at the 10K bit and asked if I could do half that. Another pt informed him Boulder was a 10K, but certainly there were 5ks that time of year.
So, sounds like I may get cleared in March. And that he is thinking we will escalate from there to 3 miles with maybe a stretch goal of 6 by May after that.
So, still just a cheerleader (stalker?) for February it sounds like, but perhaps March will have miles on the board, even if it’s just little ones. Probably means I should go investigate some new running shoes. I don’t even want to venture a guess how many walking miles either of my current ones have, and so probably better to start fresh.
Tip for our newer runners: don’t ignore things like swollen ankles or clicky/poppy sounds (or any other indications of issues) for 6+months and run half marathons Before going and getting GOOD medical advice.10 -
11 km along the Riverbank Trails right after work, 95% of the run was in Daylight. Still in the deep freeze -21C = -6F. Ran into quite a few friends/fellow runners who were out hitting the trails and enjoying the increased daylight, so lots of 2-3 minute breaks when we met, which makes for a very long slow run.
We might be restricted on Trails for a while ( 2 years ) as they are starting the project to build a New Bridge over the River ~50m away from the existing bridge so I expect construction barricades will close off some of the trails.
I know that the main road past my office is going to be closed for a while so we will have to detour. There are only 2 roads out of the North End of town where I live so all the Traffic will be squeezed down to the one road, including School Buses, Industrial Park traffic, regular commuters and Construction Equipment so it promises to be a slow commute. Might be faster to stock pile clean work clothes in my locker on the weekend and run/bike to work during the week - depending on the weather.
02/01 0.0 km – 0.0km –140.0 km – YTD 71.66 km
02/04 10.23 km –10.23km –129.77 km – YTD 81.89
02/09 11.00 km –21.23km –118.77 km – YTD 92.89 km Riverbank Trails
EarBuds - So many of my events are in the bush or have road crossings that most of them have a no-earbud policy. Usually it's not rigorously enforced. One of my niece's keeps one earbud in for pace, distance updates.
I used to run with music but realized that quite often I was so zoned out ( or zoned into the run ) that I wasn't paying any attention to what was playing so I just quit taking them.
My whole body is a little sore and tired after a pretty solid week of activities.
Monday recover/rest after Sundays race.
Tuesday night Adult Swim Club with 3 workout stations, 1 Dryland and 2 in the water. Superman Planks in 3 positions, bridges and Situps really worked the core.
Wednesday night Downhill skiing by headlamp and 1/2 of the normal hill lights.
Thursday Swim club more dryland and water cycles.
Run tonight. So 4/5 days have been active.
Tomorrow is planned long run day, will see how that goes. Could be one of those Short-Long runs5 -
@fitoverfortymom Good luck with your race!
@skippygirlsmom Sorry to hear your run sucked, but glad to hear that Skip is ok.
@zdyb23456 I feel your pain on the cold/flu front...I've had it, my wife had it, my youngest is just getting over it along with an ear infection, and now we're just waiting for the other kids to all come down with it.
@hanlonsk Fingers crossed that March will see some mileage from you! I'll echo your advice, but sometimes those clicking sounds are harmless...my left ankle clicks a LOT to the point that I'm pretty much a human metronome, but there's no pain, and other than being annoying, it doesn't interfere with anything.
With regards to headphones, I'm in the same camp as @MNLittleFinn in that I don't wear 'em. Ear-buds tend to pop out of my ears even when I'm not moving, so running with them would just irk me, and given the music that I like to listen to, I'd end up running waaay too quick lol.
Yesterday, the group finally met up (they'd basically avoided running all week due to the cold), so I ran the usual five with them, and surrounded the group run with extra mileage as I usually do.
Today however, the weather was almost 70F, and seeing as it's supposed to be raining and near freezing tomorrow, and then below freezing on Sunday, I took advantage of the very mild temps and decided to do a 20-miler on tired legs. It seems I kinda forgot just how far that is, and boy did I feel it! I'm now in recovery tights, and I'll probably sleep in them to help my calves feel somewhat normal again...but like with all runs, I'm glad I did it.
Next Thursday, I get to be the on-call guy at work for a week, meaning I can't be out running too much, so I'll have to try and cram in some mileage up to that point and then take the on-call week as a rest week. I hate being on-call, but I guess the silver lining is fitting in a down-week.

Almost didn't happen today. Woke up to light drzzling rain and 30 degree temps. Took an hour to get going but I started my run. I wanted 14 miles today but I didn't really need that much. 11 would give me a 40 mile week so that's what I did. All zone 2 Achilles is sore but not in pain. Rest Sunday and a tempo run Monday.

Missed 1 day here and I am 6 pages behind! Wow - that never ceases to amaze me. I will get caught up here later today and hopefully I won't be 12 pages behind by then!
I had a lovely, cool sunset run last night after sitting for hours on conference calls. It felt so great to get outside!
3 things I learned on my run:
1) my new wide band UA sports bra, while very comfortable is not good for running and my itty bittys were very sore 2) the fit of my old Lucy running pants with the tight waist band has not improved
3) gnats and gum make a horrible crunchy combination!

@shanaber
1)I didn't like my UA bra either.
2) I feel ya in the tight waist band. Mines currently the tight bra band, and I'm not running.
3)I'm aftaid of chewing gum while running, I'd probably choke to death.
@hanlonsk Hang in there. You have every reason to get mad, pissy, snarky or frustrated. Sucks being down. Sneak a run? Hahahaha! Don't do that (and get hurt).3 -

And February's race is in the books. A Valentine's themed 5k round Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, MA. After the snow, icy rain, and below-freezing temperatures we've been having lately, it felt positively pleasant this morning running in 43 deg F.
Still waiting for the official results, but I know I finished 4th in my age-group.16
