@amymoreorless I am more of a night person. I prefer working out at night. Mornings I'm a zombie before food, coffee and shower lol2

Hi guys! I haven't disappeared, I was just away in NOLA and then living through ridiculous busy-ness at work Wed through today. Last weekend was supposed to be a double race weekend but Saturday's 5k was postponed to tomorrow morning due to downed trees from Friday's nor'easter. Right now, here is a brief race report on Sunday's New Orleans Rock n' Roll Half Marathon with a bunch of pics!
My only goal for this race was to run the complete distance w/out ITBS pain. It was the longest run I've done, by 2 miles, since I first developed the IT band issues. I was definitely very anxious going into it, and kept telling myself that I needed to just take it easy, and not even pay attention to my pace.
I started out in corral 7 out of 23. There were a LOT of people, but the start area was well-organized. After getting through the typical corral shuffle to the actual starting line I set off, with some trepidation! The weather was beautiful, low 60s to start, I believe, w/blue sunny skies and a nice breeze. Later on in the race there were a few moments when it felt quite warm in the sun, as I believe it got up into the 70s, but there was a lot of shade along the route.
Being my first ever time in NOLA it was really cool to be able to run through a bunch of it. What an awesome city. The race had music from speakers at every mile, along with at least 4-5 bands along the course. There were a lot of fun spectators too! At mile 12 I picked up a jello shot (which I saved til after the race, lol) and other people picked up beers. Just a really fun, energetic vibe.
For the most part I did a really good job of not focusing on my pace. A few miles in, the 2:15 pacer passed me (I figured out we must have started around the same time, I just hadn't seen her), and it took a lot of mental willpower to not try to beat her. I did end up putting on a few bursts of speed to maintain the distance between us, but I was able to end up losing sight of her. Either she just had her sign down for a little bit and I lost track of her, or she had been traveling a little too fast and adjusted her pace, because a couple miles later I ended up suddenly catching her up, and then passing her, without really trying, and ended up with an actual finishing time of 2:13.
Now, this wasn't a PR for me, as right now my PR is 2:01:15. BUT, it is better than I was anticipating, considering I was going in with NO pace expectations. Usually for a half I'll have specific min/mile goals, and do all sorts of mental arithmetic to keep track of how many seconds and minutes I have over or under my goal. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see how consistent my pace ended up being, and I ended up having a negative split second half, without even trying! But, the biggest win for me was just completing the race with no ITBS pain! I was literally giddy with relief when I ran across that finish line!!!
And, not that I'm going to pay the exorbitant prices, but I also had an inordinately high ratio of actually decent race pics! That never happens!
(sorry in advance for all the pics!)
jello shot in hand!

@KatieJane83 Congrats on your race! Your pictures are so good, you're actually smiling! I usually look like a stroke victim in mine. You even saved up enough for a little bounce at the finish!4

5 miles, fartleks
I've started following the Strava training plan for a sub-2 hr. half marathon. In reality, my target is a 20K race... so not quite a half marathon. Anyway, I'm still de-trained, so I might have to re-do this workout because it sucked.

I must not be far enough north. I encountered a skunk on a run last fall. I've also encounter a porcupine, but they're harmless unless you try to pet them.
If you ever have a nasty encounter with a skunk, look up the recipe for the baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish detergent mixture to neutralize the odor. It WORKS. Ask Kody how I know. I now keep those supplies in my hunting gear.
@lporter229 you don't keep a flashlight in your car?
No, I should though, for lots of reasons. And it's funny that you mention that because I was about half way home when I realized that I could have taken one from work and used that. I think it was just not meant to happen last night.
I've used the flashlight on my phone before. Works pretty well in a pinch
Before phones had torches, I once had to resort to one of those character key rings with a light, where you squeezed the body of the letting to turn the torch briefly on, enough so you could put your key in the lock.
The one I had was a duck. And it quacked. I found myself down a country lane, trying to replace a tyre, with my only light being this stupid quacking duck keyring.
I now have a wind-up torch in my glove box.8 -

Blisters at the end of my second toes (on both feet) are now showing up at every run over 10 miles. I now have mecha-calluses on the end of these toes and my toenails are in a constant state of purple/black/non-existence. I have tried to Google the answer but I am getting conflicting information— My shoes are too small or too big; I scrunch my toes or they are hitting the top of the shoe....etc.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it my shoes or my running form? I have been fit-tested at a specialty running store but their suggestions don’t work.
Also, the smart-wool anti-blister socks feel like I am running over hot coals. They are so hot! Do they make socks with no toe seams? Maybe that’s the problem?
I am worried that these blisters over blisters will eventually cause foot issues...
Your feet expand when you run. So a shoe that is slightly under sized but comfy when you are in the store will be to small when you are running. You might need to go up a 1/2 size.
BUT your socks very well could be the problem. I wear Under Armor Heat Gear running socks in the summer, and Darn Tough wool socks in cold weather. Both work very well BUT as the UA's wear out I start to get blisters. I try to replace them before they get to that point. I would DEFINIITLY consider changing your sock to a running specific one.2 -
@KatieJane83 Well done!! Great pics!1
-
@girlinahat OMG, the picture in my head with the quaking! haha that's awesome.
@amymoreorless I go up half a size in my running shoes. The store originally had me up a full size and I told them they were too big but they pressured me so I took them thinking they know best. I ran once in them, barely got to the end of the block and had to turn around. My feet were all over and the shoes were sliding off. Some places want me to go up a full size and they are always too loose. So what I'm saying is, you probably need to go up but not as much as they think. I have one black toenail. Been that way a few years. I assume it will always be like that now.0 -
@KatieJane83 Wow, gorgeous negative split!!!amymoreorless wrote: »Running toes question:

LOL I wish I knew! I have long toes, and third toes longer than my second toes, and they're always black and buggered.
I gave up on ASICS Kayanos after 3 pairs 3 half sizes smaller than my regular shoes. The toe box is just too cramped. (Plus I don't need all the support they have as I wear orthotics.)
I've had better luck with Brooks Ravenna 4 half sizes than my regular shoes, but I've had blisters on my second toes on 30+ km runs (and I always wear anti-blister tech fabric no-seam socks).
I'm planning on going for Nike Zoom Vomeros next, which I'm told have a larger toe box and are great for HM+ distances.

Big Hairy Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
03/17/18 - Shamrock Shuffle Half Marathon + 5k + 1mile
04/07/18 - Achilles 9.3 Challange (10k and 5k back to back)
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
Dreadmill run for speed work. It stopped on me THREE times though - BUT - I figured out my problem. For some reason once I get warmed up and in the grove, I end up running slightly faster than the dreadmill and bumping into the control panel - occasionally hitting it just right to hit the "end work out" button. Need force myself to back off some how.
Tomorrow probably be a rest day as I have to travel out of town, but hoping for a 20+ mile run Sunday, pending weather.
7.5MPH on the dreadmill is roughly a 1:45 half-marathon. So if there are pacers at the HM next week, I think that is where I will line up. Sub 1:50 is my goal, so we will see.3 -

Hahaha, those are a great idea with the inbuilt sock that would stop grit getting in.
But I'm afraid my vanity wouldn't let me wear them.1 -
Did parkrun (5 km) today in 27:10.
My fastest time since my PB 11 months ago. Yay!9 -
I'm planning on going for Nike Zoom Vomeros next, which I'm told have a larger toe box and are great for HM+ distances.
I love the Vomeros; they're simply great for distance. I haven't tried the 13s as I'm now just trying out the Epic Reacts, but to date I've had zero foot issues with them. No calluses, no black/missing toenails, and no blisters. Of course, everyone's different and YMMV and all that, but I love 'em.1 -

Hi everyone!
Still keeping at it. Though it's been a bit tough since my doctor tacked on a new medication to help me sleep better. One of the side effects of this medication is leg and back pain. Whoopee! Trying to run through it as best I can.... some days are better than others. Today I did 4.2 miles and didn't have much of an issue.
Got some new shoes, too. I went for the v8's. So far they are working out nicely, keeping my fingers crossed that I don't have any hip problems with them. So far, so good.
Speaking of sleep, I recently got a weighted blanket. This thing is so neat... it weighs 15 pounds and does an amazing job of calming my anxiety and akathisia. I highly recommend it to anyone who has trouble sleeping because of anxiety. I got mine from Mosaic Blankets (you can Google them to find their website).
Obligatory pic of new shoes:

My Friday night run started at a little after 9:30pm, and continued until 3am with a small stop to take in a gel. The weather was awesome; light cloud cover and warm temps in the 60s, with a nice southerly breeze, certainly made for a pleasant night run. This time, there were absolutely no skunks...not even a whiff. But bunnies? So. Many. Bunnies. It's like it's almost Easter or something.

Finished my Shamrock Shuffle 5k in 28:24 which was good enough to get me third place in my age-group. Had to scramble through some fresh snow to get to the start line, but the piping hot coffee at the end made it all worthwhile. And most important of all, my new shoes felt great.15

@juliet3455 thanks so much for the Embrace the Suck link! That’s fabulous! I’m still hoping to go down a shirt size so not buying new tops at the moment, but I will save the link.
@skippygirlsmom I hope you are on the mend soon!
@garygse That late night run is really impressive!
I went for my second 3 mi morning run in a row yesterday morning, and it worked out well. It seems a little easier to fit into the day there (FT job, 2 kids, lots of evening activities and some late work nights).
And my Nathan water bottle hip belt came yesterday from Sierra Trading Post, so I’m excited to try that out on a long run one of these weeks. Thanks to everyone for the recs and intel on that last month.

NEW 5K PR TODAY!!!
Returned to the site of my first ever 5k (last year) and ran my best race yet! This was my second nonstop run, and this time I was much better at the pinch-and-pour at the aid stations than last weekend. Plus, it was sprinkling rain, so dousing wasn't such a concern.
Started a bit faster than I wanted, in part because I had a friend aiming for a 10-minute mile starting ahead of me, and although I made a conscious effort to run my own race, I'd be lying if I said I didn't consider trying to keep up with her just to see how far I could get. Still, I was able to focus in and kept my fastest/first mile and slowest/last mile within a minute's pace of each other. (Runtastic splits: 12:27, 12:47, 13:16 and 13:21 for the final partial before I stopped the timer.)
Finished in 40:36 (unofficial) - about 2:30 faster than last weekend and 1:27 faster than my previous PR from April of last year! Also ran a much tighter race today, ending with 3.16M (compared to 3.22M on the same route last year and 3.38M last weekend).
No pics, I'm afraid, but it was a great day!

Today's notes: Got in 24.8 road miles this morning, on a 1.04 mile loop. Post-nasal drip plus drinking coffee w/cream before my run led to a puking incident right before I started. Stomach felt GREAT after I did that... the graham cracker with nutella might have contributed too... Anyway, Run went well, got over 900 feet of elevation. Started getting a headache, which turned into a screamer before I was done. Forgetting sunglasses + clear sky + snow was the culprit... ugh.... and, well, it was a road run. Only managed 9:45 average pace because my knees weren't really liking me by the end, having been pampered by running 90% trail the last few months. Oh well, I got the miles in.
Hope everyone is having a Runderful day!

@KatieJane83 – Thanks for the great NOLA HM review – congratulations!
@amymoreorless – I’ve only had blisters on the end of my toes one time and I blame the socks for that one. I had on a pair of Smart Wools that were too thick. I think my feet got too hot and with the friction the blister developed. Normally, I love my Smart Wools but most of them aren’t as thick as the pair I had on that day.
@BruinsGal_91 – Congrats on your age group award!!
@garygse – Wow – 30 miles and during the night! Nice!
@HRKinchen – Well done! Congrats on your PR!
@MNLittleFan – 24 miles on a 1 mile loop? How? Why?
Late (for me) 8:00 am start this morning due to weather forecast of rain. Only ended up getting a few sprinkles. The route for today ended up with quite a few hills.
Upcoming Races:
April 7 – Cooper River Bridge Run
May 6 – Pittsburgh Half Marathon
September 7-8 – Blue Ridge Relay
October 20 – Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon
