What nobody tells you about losing weight

ha nobody told me i'd need my husband to hide the scale so i'd resist weighing myself every day12

That once I got within 5 pounds of what I thought was going to be my final goal weight I would re *kitten* and adjust it to 5 more pounds less than original weight and still am not sure that will be my final goal.21

That the struggle between liquor and food on a Friday night is real.64

This! It is a shifting goal post thing! And once it is no longer a weight that is your goal another health related goal will pop up.

Hah! I mostly feel rib I’m finding more moles as I can see more of myself. My dermatologist just rolls her eyes at my freak outs about giant new moles I’ve found bc my boobs or thighs were small enough that I could actually see the opposite side for the first time ever.13 -

I just started MFP...again, and this thread has really motivated me, I want to feel all those things like the cold, the hip bones, the collarbones. I want to look in the mirror and not cringe every time I see myself. I want to love me, finally!! I’m day one and I’m hungry but i know it will all be worth it in 2/3/4 weeks from now. So happy I found this thread, thank you.28

How much better your posture is both sitting and standing.21

How much I actually enjoy eating healthy food now! & how whenever I do eat a cheat meal...for example fast food...i feel like complete crap & instantly regret it lol.
How I started losing weight in none of the places I wanted to lose weight at first lol. I was hoping my stomach & my legs would start shrinking but unfortunately they weren't the first to go lol.
How much more energy I have now that I started working out and eating better!
How I'm too afraid to throw out or pack up my clothes that are too big in fear I will need them again...
I have gotten rid of most everything that is too big as I choose to have the mindset that I am not going back. This winter has been a challenge as scale has bounced around 10 pounds or so but not going to let it completely derail me.15 -
How exciting it is to fit into clothes in your closet again. How the once "I can't believe I'm this size" clothes become the "yay, this fits again" clothes and you feel so much better wearing them now. It's all about perspective!26

I have been heavy so long that I am now out of too small clothes but not yet to my goal so thrift shops and clearance sales are my go to for interim clothing. And a big time shopping spree when I finally get to goal.14 -
How much more difficult it is to shave my armpits now! It was so simple before, they were just kind of hinges. Nowadays there’s all sorts of geometry going on there with muscles, and I seem to either miss bits of stubble or cut myself trying to get them.
(I kinda like them anyway though)30 -

Is it weird to say that i kind of like the divots that are my armpits? You're very right about shaving!
I also like the knobbly bits on my wrists and ankles, despite my natural clumsiness that often causes me to bump them against things or kick myself on them. My poor ankle knobs, they're bruised so often!14 -
I just had a baby in January and I have started logging and walking more to try to drop this baby weight, and it’s working—I’m down 25lbs so far. What I didn’t expect was for everyone to be SO surprised. I’ve had several people comment, “You look really good!” with so much shock in their voice that I’m not sure if I should be offended, like they didn’t think I could look good! And then I don’t really know how to respond, so I just saw thanks and try to change the subject.
I’m also still wearing an abdominal binder from my c-section which makes my stomach look flatter than it really is. So not all these comments are “earned.”
Maybe they've just lost track of how long it's been since you gave birth. I always think someone JUST had that baby and the kid's two already.

Nobody told me that fitness would come with so many bruises!
...the last session of my dance fit class had a fast floor section. After dropping to one knee multiple times in practice, people at work started asking what I'd done. Then I screwed up a cuple of lunges on that side in Bodypump...
...how I bruised the inner ankle knob and half my calf, though, I still have no idea!8 -
I know this thread goes back to 2015, but it is so inspirational!! I just started on my latest weight loss journey in January, and I and my husband are doing this together. We both have both lost about 23 lbs so far, but have about 70 lbs each that we need to lose.23

How you'll still have "fat days", especially when weight loss starts to slow down and the changes aren't so drastic anymore but definitely not as many fat days as before. You'll KNOW you look good, unfortunately sometimes you'll FEEL like you don't. Hmm, weight loss is one thing, now I have to figure out how to be at peace with myself.
Well, you’ll well on your way because you know the difference. Just remember, you deserve the best life that you can give yourself no matter what was given to you. Blessings9 -
How much psychology plays into overeating for some people (me). Everyone who says who you are doesn't change when you lose is right.
I'm bouncing around 241 right now. The lowest I've ever gotten was in the 230s, eight years ago. I know why: I'm eating too much because I'm afraid to get thinner, because if I get thinner I might have to like and feel good about myself.
Isn't that sad?
I'll get over this hump, because it's my mom's voice in my head telling me I don't deserve to feel good about myself, and by *kitten* I can't let her win!
It's frustrating right now when I keep sabotaging myself on purpose though. Today was a good day, I exercised and will come in under my calories. Tomorrow can be a good day too.65 -

The most painful thing is kicking yourself in the ankle knob with a tap shoe! Tell you what though, if you want an incredible cardio workout that is also super fun, try tap dancing. Ballet works too, but if you've never done it before expect to not be able to walk for a week afterwards. It's safer for the ankle knobs.4 -
I've got a few...!
- That there will be a growing frustration about people who continue to make excuses about their weight and how they can't lose it the way I did (calorie counting) or they justify their choices when we are out at a restaurant, simply since I've lost weight. Girl, I wasn't judging you, but when you say you're gonna be healthy and going on about how you eant to lose weight, then you eat your salad covered in oil and bacon and cheese, then pick at the French fries next to you, I don't wanna say anything...
- People will repeatedly ask "I need to know your secret!" And I mean repeatedly. The same person, every time you see them, will ask this. And the answer is always the same... calories in, calories out - food logging - walking. I didn't do any crazy diet and exercise program or anything, everyone always wants a quick fix and seem jaded when I tell them what I did.
- That I wasn't as "big boned" as I thought I was.
- How small your boobs will become. I knew they would get smaller, but...!
- How nice it is to go shopping for clothes and to buy what you like, not just what fits and is mildly 'flattering'.32 -
I hit the thrift shop's "dollar" sale and picked up five pairs of jeans in preparation for my next goal size, which is an 8. (From 18 to 8, Yeah!) All of them still had original store tags, so someone who had yo-yoing weight probably donated them. Anyway, I washed them, thinking how tiny they looked.
On a whim, I tried them on.
They fit me now. Those tiny jeans fit..me..now. Someone pinch me. I can't believe this.
No one told me how tiny these clothes will be.63 -
Also, people told me that I'd lose friends, but I didn't get it.
Someone posted about a performance artist that takes pictures of herself in busy areas and posts the pictures "mocking" her. I commented that she sets up a tripod in a busy area and poses, then is surprised when she gets negative attention (the artist in question isn't even that fat), and that if the attention and comments bother her, it's in her power to change.
I got blocked.
But other friends have called me brave and inspiring for losing weight, and they started losing weight because of me.13 -

That is an amazing feeling, I have had the same thing happen and all the summer shirts I bought last summer look too big so I am actually buying womens medium tops....never thought I would be in a medium

Now I think I'm reaching for something beyond average. I'm not quite sure what it is yet, but it ain't mediocrity.
Nice sentiment.

Before loosing 102 lbs, finding clothes that fit was a real challenge. Shirts were too tight at the belly or too wide at the shoulder. Pants too small at the waist or it the waist was ok then they had to be super baggy.
I did not expect “standard” clothes to fit well, especially when I was considering custom-tailored garnements at one time!18 -
No one told me I could still screw up occasionally and still be successful at losing weight. Perfection is overrated!58

That after a year and three months I am doing this automatically. I realized this morning that I haven't weighed myself in more than two weeks so I got onto the scale and lost a little bit. I don't feel pressured anymore, I have simply adapted a new lifestyle and despite going through a very difficult time, I haven't gained once.45
