My other big concern was a lack of corresponding back work, but I have also added pullups. Just nowhere the same numbers, lol.
What’s your concerns. I’m an endurance cyclist...just added in 100-200 push ups per day 4 months ago. I don’t want ANY mass gains but I am 47 so I need to maintain some muscle. I ride 2 hours per day...average per year so I ride a lot. I thought push ups work whole upper body some...back less I know
Any thoughts would be great

They do work the entire upper body, true, but the back less than the front. If they are a complimentary exercise to a comprehensive regime, there's no problem. The trouble comes when they are essentially the ONLY exercise being performed, as is regretfully the case with me. Without balance, one side of the body eventually becomes stronger than the other, causing alignment issues as the stronger muscles, even at rest, exert more force on joints and spine than weaker muscles, over time pulling everything in the direction of the stronger. This could mean shoulders pulled forward, hunched back, poor posture, shoulder injuries due to disparate strengths on either side of the joint, pain, the list goes on. Rather not deal with that, thank you very much.
In your case you are adding pushups to a comprehensive exercise routine (riding), so likely will not be an issue for you. I might recommend some superman exercises to counter the constant bending-over of riding, but I am less experienced in riding so take my meager advice for what it's worth.0 -
Thanks that’s helpful. I have a full CrossFit rig my wife uses so maybe I will do a few pull ups to balance it out. Keep at the 100k...that’s an impressive goal.0

Nice job. I just came across this thread. I have my own pushup goal this year but no where near as ambitious as yours. I'm 51 and go to the gym three days a week and decided to throw some exercise into my non-gym days. I do pushups, knee bends, and planks now on non-gym days.
My pushup goal is to work up to 100 per day. But the thing is, I'm in no hurry to get there all at once. So I set a slow and steady increment goal this year. In Frebruary I did 50 per day. In March I upped it to 55 per day. Now in April I'm up to 60. I'll increase it by 5 each month at will be at 100 for January 2019. I could do more now but just feel like going slow and steady. I had to get push up handles though because my wrists were hurting too much after I started.0 -
I think it’s a cool goal. I bike a ton...like 2-3 hours a day so I’m happy with 150-200 push ups before bed. Keep pounding them out!0
