What nobody tells you about losing weight

Having to tighten the straps on my bike helmet, apparently my "hat size" is starting to thin out with the rest13

I am not irregular in a bad way, but the "morning constitutional" is a thing of the past. When there was more going in, there was more coming out and I pretty much needed to poop every morning. Now it is at various times of the day and not every day. I think increased activity has an effect also. Core exercises tend to set things in motion...19

What no one told me is that, even though I've rearranged my life for the sake of health and weight loss, keeping off these c. 70 pounds will likely require CONSTANT VIGILANCE. I could comfortably sit my *kitten* down on the couch for a year and gain it all back. I probably won't choose to do that, but it would be so easy.
This... this is straight up gospel. I've lost 60, easily put some back... fighting for that last 7-9 again. I used to think it was so gimmicky when people would say its a lifestyle change, not a diet... but its the damn truth. I could eat a family size bag of doritos right now... but I'm not.... probably...
No... i'm not... let's do this!42 -

Kind of fits here: I don't know how many times I've been asked, "What's your secret?" as if I found some magic weight loss beans. I always find that question irritating. I worked my *kitten* off. No shortcuts. No pills, no drinks, no fad diets.
So, I'd say the misconception that you can lose weight easily with some sort of cheat.15 -

A lot of times you can. Keeping it off is something else entirely though.7 -

Or when people discount all the hard work with a remark like, “Oh, men can just lose weight so easly.” That really pi$$es me off. I’ve worked hard for this.30 -

Yep! And no matter how much detail you go into the whole concept of simply eating fewer calories than you use, many will still argue and outright call you a liar insisting that it must be something else.11 -

I get "well you lost so much because you're young" all the time. No, it's because I am careful about measuring and logging my food so that I can stay in a calorie deficit and I've worked hard for it - age has nothing to do with it! My favorite was when a well-meaning coworker told me, "that'll all change once you have babies. You'll never be able to lose weight again." Well huh. Everyone has their two cents - you have to learn to ignore the bad and embrace the good!19 -

I'm 41, my "baby" is a teenager.... No, age has nothing to do with it. Working you butt off (quite literally) is how it's done. There's always the "big boned" and genetics arguments as well, and equally dumb. Genetics dictated that I am 5'8", nothing to do with being obese or normal weight.14 -
There will be friends and family who try sabotage your hard work and weight loss. For an example...I am an ice cream addict. People say well just have an ice cream bar....would you tell an alcoholic to just have a shot or little bit? NO...people just don't get it. I lived most of my life thinking a 1/2 gallon was an individual serving.
I am an incredible ice cream addict- I used to have Talenti Gelato every night. Fortunately we live in a golden age of low calorie ice cream! Have you tried Halo Top? I have 1/2 cup every night, and it's between 60-90 calories (depending on the variety), and unlike some of them, it's really really good. Not sure I will go back to real ice cream even when I get to maintenance.8 -

That people think it’s fine to ask what size clothes you’re wearing, and how much you weigh! I wasn’t prepared for those questions at first.

Vanity sizing is out of control. I fit into a size 38 at H&M but at Forever 21 it's hard to squeeze into a 46. It's just not right, if I was younger and less confident this would really mess with my head.19

I wear men's medium shirts now, except that some brands are way too big. They often make a M slim/athletic fit that will fit. Forever 21 L t shirts fit better now. I bought them when I was bigger and I could put them on but they were too tight in some places. They come out of the wash smaller and then stretch. Now I am not stretching them and they look okay, but not as good as the cheap Fruit of the Loom M v necks in lots of colors; I rock those now.7 -

In 2004 I bought a CPAP machine and set it so the kids (age 7 at the time) reported they could not hear me snooze. They said I make the whole house shake. I had to start out with a setting of 12 cmH2O before they started reporting not hearing me snore. Now that I am about 60 pounds lighter I have dialed it down to 8. It sure makes mask leaks a less of an issue. The Dream Wear below is almost like I am not even using a CPAP.

Mine was 10 from my first sleep study and was dialed back to 6 after my recent one, but the new machine is really an APAP and adjusts as needed from the default of 6. When I turn it off in the morning, I have to press the button twice. The first time it shows what it adjusted to. I have seen it as high as 8.2, but I have had more nights when it adjusted to below 5.4 -

Those automatics are NICE. I have looked at some on the secondary markets but I have picked up several spares over the years of the older technology. The first one that I found was on eBay and the others were from like Craigslist and local ads. I was dead broke and did not have the desire to do a sleep study at the time so I just read up and trained myself and 14 years later I am still a successful CPAP user.
Folks if you are tired all of the time a sleep study may be in order to lower the risks of strokes and heart attacks.6 -

Yep, I have 4 distinctly different sizes of jeans.....that all fit the same!!!! At least I know my exact size in Adidas soccer shorts. Everything I have to try on.
Fruit of the Loom might be inexpensive, but they are not necessarily cheap (quality). I love them for my workout shirts.2 -

^^^^^^OMG this!!!! Unless you lost more than I did without surgery, or a registered dietician.... seriously, we don't need nor want your Dr. Oz or random internet quack weight loss advise.

I've lost just about 40 (about half of what I intend to lose) and even then, you are so right about this! I have a co-worker who does this when I tell her all of what I do when she asks. And now shes hopping on the bandwagon.
When some of the people around me started noticing (especially on vacation when I went to see other family), they were all just shocked. Some gathered in a group and looked at a pic of me from some years ago and their reaction was just priceless.
I'm sure someone has said this already in the thread but here I go... I take way more pictures of myself, much more confident than I was about 40 lbs ago.21 -
How I need to adjust my swimming almost daily because the body floats different depending which fat disappears.
It’s so annoying to have your midsection one day, then your butt the next day act as a floatation device depending on the type of swimming you’re doing when you’re trying to do laps!20
