Thinking about trying the keto diet. I am trying to cut just a few pounds for a summer trip that I am taking with a couple of my friends. I have heard that keto is super easy to do after the initial two days. Please advise on how long it took for you to lose X number of pounds and to see the results or how long it took to get over the "keto flu" or tips on how to manage or good food to eat. Just any tips. Wanting to start soon!
Thanks for your help in advance.

Any diet that starts off with having what is dubbed a “flu” doesn’t sound appealing to me. Is there a particular reason you want to try keto? It works the same way any diet does, by creating a calorie deficit. The people that are successful on keto lose weight because of this and this only, there’s no magic behind it. I’m sure it’s easy for many, but more often than not I see people who plateau after the initial water weight loss because they decline to keep track of their overall consumption or people who give up because of how restrictive of a diet it is. Might I suggest eating a balanced diet and practicing portion control?25

"Easy" would be highly subjective and individual. Personally, I wouldn't find limiting carbohydrates to next to nothing very easy, nor would I find eating copious amounts of dietary fat easy or limiting protein easy.
I suppose it's easy for some who gravitate towards eating a ton of fat and have little interest in fruits and vegetables and other quality carbohydrates in more than the tiniest amounts.
Also keep in mind that initial losses on the scale are largely water and glycogen depletion...if you're planning on drinking alcohol on your trip, be prepared to put back on water weight and bloat.

The "keto-flu" is actually an entirely preventable electrolyte imbalance. If you replace the electrolytes that you lose with early water weight you can skip the symptoms of fatigue, headache, nausea, brain fog, moodiness, bm issues, and muscle weakness, pain or spasms.
Most early keto'ers need 3000 to 5000 mg of sodium a day. There's 2300 mg of sodium in a teaspoon of salt.
I found cravings were gone within a week, and it became easy fairly soon after that. I didn't change my food too much though. I just dropped sugars and refined carbs (baking) first. Then I cut back on fruits and starchy veggies. Instead of a steak with potato and a veggie, I dropped the potato. My spaghetti with meat sauce became a lot of sauce on a small amount of spaghetti squash. I stopped putting my stirfries on rice. Stuff like that.
Good luck.20 -

For whatever reason there are people on here who constantly go out of their way to bash the keto diet. I don’t go on other forms talking trash on how people lose weight but to each his own. I personally love the ketogenic diet and unlike some of the responses, there is science that backs fat loss while in ketosis. There is no other form of eating that gets you into this state. That is what separates it from all others. Everyone will have different results and find it to be “easy or hard” depending on the individual. I was at a lull for about 2 straight months at 211lbs while counting calories on MFP. I reintroduce keto back into my diet and am now at 204 in a month and a half. Unlike other diets, there are no cheat days. Cheat days kick you out of ketosis and you have to work your way back to it. For me personally I find it hard at times to stay away from certain carbs but I balance it out by eating foods that are preferred like avocados, ribeye steaks, eggs, salami etc. I find having friends on here who also keto with open diaries a good way to find new recipes and items to eat. There is a simple book to read that’s on amazon called https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Ketogenic-Diet-Beginners-Essential/dp/1623158087/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1529034761&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=keto+diet&psc=1

I’m curious to see this science, really. The vast majority of people who talk about the keto diet, including those responding to this post, aren’t bashing it. Rather, were making sure OP is aware that it is not necessary to lose weight and that all weight loss comes down to is being in a calorie defecit. If they want to try, more power to them and there are many helpful resources. However, it is equally as important to go into it knowing why it works when it does.

Nvmomketo is correct. However, it is better to use sea salt rather than regular table salt. I added potassium and magnesium supplements to my normal morning multivitamin, and avoided keto flu entirely.
Once you start, you may not want to stop. :-) One of the big benefits of removing the starchy carbs from your diet is reduced inflammation in your body. That's why so many people have big weight drops the first week (mostly water). So for most people that try keto, they feel great - fewer aches and pains - and sleep better. It also has the benefit of helping the body balance hormones. So no blood sugar highs and lows, which means more appetite control, and no more getting "hangry". And for women, better, more manageable PMS symptoms and periods.
I have been doing keto for a little over 3 months now, and really enjoying it. Which is not something I have ever said about a diet in the past!35 -

Keto does not eliminate vegetables or even fruits. Green leafy vegetables and high fiber vegetables are encouraged, and low-glycemic fruits such as berries are absolutely fine to consume. Also, although the fat you consume is higher, it's not really an obscene amount if you are doing it correctly. Adding avocado and olive oil to your diet is not unhealthy, and the fat is what helps keep you satiated. It's not like you are sitting there eating Crisco by the spoonful.

This is my second round of the Keto Diet, I fell off the train a little but getting back on was easy. I feel I can eat more of the foods I like to eat and I get fast results. Everyone is different though my boyfriend is doing it with me this time and he really hasn't seen much of a change so far (he's also not as strict about it as I am). I have been doing it for about 2.5 weeks or so and I have already lost 6lbs. It is leaning me right out and I noticed my stomach being bloated is less and less. I wouldn't really recommend doing this just to lose weight for your trip only because if you try to go back to your old diet if it is drastically different than KETO you will feel horrible (different BM movements, stomach cramps ect) on your vacation also because you are taking in less sugar and your body is getting used to it when you do have something with sugar it's going taste completely different. Good luck with what ever you choose to do and I hope you have fun on your vacation.16

I'll offer a tip from personal experience: If you do keto to drop weight before your trip and don't give your body time to get re-accustomed to your regular diet, make sure you spend your vacation within walking distance of the nearest toilet. And practice walking fast while tightly clenching your cheeks. And bring spare clothing just in case. Rapidly reversing from a keto diet has some very....interesting....digestive side effects.20 -

I agree. Most medical claims here are made by armchair dieticians. You can really tell who does and does not know much about ketones, carbs and fat. There is no "protein limiting" on the WOE. This is not restrictive in terms of the variety of foods you can eat. It is by definition though, very low in carbs which means most of the stuff in a pre-keto pantry has to be tossed.
And please stop thanking people "in advance". How do you realistically do that? Thank someone *after* they have helped, not before. If one insists on following this type of faux pas, then a simple "Thank you" is all you need. *Or* wait until after people have helped to thank them.30 -

Could you please explain how the diet is not restrictive in terms of food variety, yet most of your pre-keto pantry needs to be tossed?
The reason most people have no long term success on this diet is because it is too restrictive. If you like foods that are high fat and low carb then this is genuinely a diet where long term success (I am talking maintenance with this way of eating) is achievable. If you know you can not cope without all fruits and vegetables (rather than a select few), or without grains then maybe it is not even worth starting because the chances of you adhering to it for any period of time in very low until there is a medical reason for it.
I am not bagging keto. I have seen and read great success stories. I will bag the woo that comes with some that think keto is some sort of magic or the only way of achieving goals because I believe everyone needs to know that there is no one diet that is best for everyone, just one diet that is best for you.19 -

Fat loss or fat burning?
If course you burn more fat.... You're eating more fat.23 -

I have to say, yours is one of the funnier posts here. But you are right. Adopting this WOE is not something one should do right before a vacation because it is, as you say, a dramatically different way of powering your body. It's not really a fad diet. Sticking to keto will change your life and is not "super easy to do".11 -

You do know that most of this is water weight, right? Your body is using up glycogen stores.
Keto isn't faster fat loss unless your keto calories are lower than your typical "eat less, move more" calories. All weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. Using fat stores (fat loss) requires a calorie deficit, no matter the foods you choose to eat.

I am not saying it’s faster than any other diet, I was just letting her know the results I’ve had since I started.

Most diets do not have long term success. I have never seem any evidence that keto is any worse. I've actually seen some that shows keto is more sustainable, TBH.
There is no need to limit fruits and veggies to a select few, but one must be prepared to limit the amount of those foods that they eat.
If you prefer sugary tropical fruit like bananas or mangoes, or like to eat dried fruits like raisins and dates, you won't be able to eat a lot of it... but you can do that if you wish. If you eat 50g of carbs a day, and choose to do that with two bananas, that a personal choice. If one prefers more variety and volume, you'll need more low glycemic load food choices.
Here are some 20 and 50g carb choices.

I will bag the woo that comes with some that think keto is some sort of magic or the only way of achieving goals because I believe everyone needs to know that there is no one diet that is best for everyone, just one diet that is best for you.

Can we be honest, its laughable how little fruit one can consume doing keto. If you are honest with yourself, you do have to cut a lot of fruits out of your diet unless you want a third of a banana, half an apple, etc...
And this coming from a person who eats 5-6 servings a day of high gi and low gi fruits. I am setting myself to follow Lyle McDonalds UD2 protocol and the keto days are ridiculously tough for a person like me.13 -

*Or* wait until after people have helped to thank them.

Well that’s the beauty of many different diet models. If keto doesn’t suit you you don’t have to follow it.
It does however suit many other people (not everybody is like you)!
I’m sure your diet doesn’t many other people, but if it suits you then that’s just great - more power to your elbow!

Yea its pretty obvious. But saying keto doesn't limit fruit or veggies is a huge stretch.
And i would never suggest for anyone to follow UD2. Its not a faint diet or exercise routine. Its only for advanced dieters with a solid foundation of dieting knowledge.8 -

Good luck.
Which is not something I have ever said about a diet in the past!
the water weight and glycogen drops from doing keto is because your depeleting your body of it. has nothing to do with inflammation.your body holds onto water and glycogen when you eat carbs, lower your carbs dramatically and your body releases the glycogen and water.which also for many can cause the keto flu because electrolytes become imbalanced because your body releases sodium which is why you have to up sodium.magnesium and potassium. as for periods and pms keto made NO difference.
it also didnt make me sleep better or have fewer aches and pains in fact I had more. I was lethargic, tired and so on. I thought it was something my body had to get used to. Nope. blood sugar fluctuates and in a healthy person is a normal response. it doesnt control everyones appetite. someone said fat loss is better doing keto. for me it also made no difference. I didnt lose any more fat doing keto as opposed to not doing it.
carbs do not cause inflammation in everyone. I have RA and eat a LOT of carbs and my inflammation hasnt gotten any worse. on keto I was in pain all the time.I do have a health issue to where I cant do keto but had no idea at the time I did it. for me it made my health worse.10 -

I prefer vegetables myself, so I did not cut a lot. Happily, fruit is not required for good health so it has no impact on my health beyond helping me lower my BG.
Eating fruit is a personal preference. That's it. It does not appeal to you. That's fine.
The idea of eating 5-6 pieces of fruit a day hurts my stomach to even think of it.... Personal preference.5 -

*Or* wait until after people have helped to thank them.
I will bag the woo that comes with some that think keto is some sort of magic or the only way of achieving goals because I believe everyone needs to know that there is no one diet that is best for everyone, just one diet that is best for you.
Here are some 20 and 50g carb choices.
https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/20-50-how-much
See that 50 carb plate of vegetables and the 20 grams one? Add them together and that would be my daily vegetable consumption. Add on top of that a banana and some strawberries and I am already pushing 100 grams of carbs. I also love things like carrots, sweet potato..... As I said keto is not for me because it limits my fruit and vegetable consumption too much and is not sustainable.
Sounds fine.
That is because it is fine .... for me. Just don't keep saying keto is not restrictive because for many it is too restrictive for long term adherence, which can be said for any diet with too many rules and restrictions. JERF (Just eat real food) the majority of the time while keeping within calorie goals is quite liberating for many when they realise they don't need to be bound by so many rules and restrictions.
By real I am talking about fresh, largely unprocessed foods.11 -

Where did you get that from? I did not say that.
But I do think rules and restrictions can work well for some people. As a celiac with IR, if I want good health, I better embrace some restrictions. Doing so, and the resulting improved health was quite liberating too.6 -

All diet models that end up with eating in a calorie deficit have rules and restrictions!
It’s all about what rules you are will to follow and what restrictions you are able to live with.

I am setting myself to follow Lyle McDonalds UD2 protocol and the keto days are ridiculously tough for a person like me.
Personal preference.

Its only for advanced dieters with a solid foundation of dieting knowledge.
Nobody is suggesting that keto doesn’t limit fruit and veg - where has anyone said that?
If the keto diet is followed correctly what nutritional element does it lack to make the diet less than optimal?
