@lporter229 what time does the sun rise by you? It's light right now by me at 5:15ish and getting dark around 8:00 since I'm so close to the Eastern/Central time zone change in the central time zone.
@Teerai I don't have a problem with my dog, unless it's a tornado, then she will let me know it's time to take cover. Thunder, fireworks none of that bother her. My first thought is the way people set off fireworks on my street alone I'd be poor giving her treats ha ha0 -

Most public displays wait until at least 9 pm if not 10 pm to start. Random people all over the country will fire them off all day long for several days on either side of the holiday. Lots of people get hurt, no one learns. Most of the "good" fireworks are illegal in many states, but outlawing something has never gotten it off the street if it is in demand.

Oh I'm so peeved. I use my fitbit to track my runs. it nothing major at this point because I'm not trying to improve my time or anything like that, just get out running. On my run this morning I had it going, I was getting my km notifications and pace, happy. but when I finished it afterwards, it hasn't saved the map or my splits or anything. I have an Alta HR and bring my phone for the maps etc.
Anyone else or just me? I've checked the forums and there is one other person so far with the same issue so it might be a fitbit thing. I'm mostly peeved because I want to sync it with Strava to keep track over there, but of course without the map it wont sync.
Hopefully nobody who actually cares about the data has the issue.
I feel your pain! My Garmin died on Sunday (only 2 months old). So frustrating! I am using my Fitbit Blaze as a backup until I get my warranty replacement but I also use the Strava phone app. I'll let you know if I have problems with my Fitbit during/after tonight's run.1 -
You can't buy fireworks in Australia unless you're professionally licenced. No injuries for anyone though.3

Hello all, new to the challenge but have been running for a few years and have started setting more weekly/monthly goals. So for July my goal is 40 miles. No specific race or event to look forward to yet, just trying to get the weight down. I run outdoors 3-4 times weekly and use treadmill on lifting days. Currently have 3.5 outdoor miles and 1 treadmill mile for the month.8

All that talk about it getting dark by 9.30 - I forget how much further NORTH we are here. I’m basically on a similar latitude to Calgary, so that will have an effect on sunset, no matter what time zone anyone is in.2

So I did a 3 mile run today, it was okay. But I’m a little upset with myself because I ate Slims Chickens later today and I’m not even sure why. I wasn’t hungry....4

Tailoring your midrun diaphragmatic breathing to an odd pattern—for example, inhaling for three steps and then exhaling for two—can prevent one side of your body from taking the brunt of running’s repeated pounding. “When you first begin to exhale, the side of your body that your weight is on receives a great amount of stress. So, if you are breathing in an even pattern, which is most runners’ default, that same side will experience the stress associated with each exhale,” Coates says. “If, however, you breathe with an odd pattern, the load is shared 50-50 during any run.”6 -
Finally recovered from the food poisoning...yay; stomach still feels like it's been punched repeatedly by a kangaroo on PCP, but it was good to get out and run. And thank you to everyone that wished me well...much appreciated!

My dogs were terrified of the fireworks last night. There is nothing like two 60lb Bassets sitting on top of you. Thank goodness for thunder-shirts!3 -

Yuck it's hot. Forecast was for 26C, phone says its 28C, pretty sure it was closer to 30 on the asphalt running path. Gross. Lots of walk breaks and water breaks for such a short run. Felt like I was going really hard and according to Strava I was a full 0:30 - 0:45/km faster than my easy pace for the second half of my run - when I was actually moving.
Tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter but it's a scheduled rest day. Thank goodness.

I know by experience the odd-number of breathing works. I don't really think about it now, but when I was first starting out I used to get side stitches because I was doing 4:4 breathing. But once they started, I would purposely exhale opposite the hurting side, and within a minute the side stitch would go away. Now I do 3:3 or even 5:5, and never get them anymore.3 -
How long have you been running? Do you have a story to share?
I'm 40 and started running in my 20ies. Actually, I use to run a lot as a kid and I was fast for a kid in elementary school. Once I hit puberty I hated it. I picked it up again in my 20ies to stay in shape and gave it up when I got pregnant at 30. I took a 5/6 year baby hiatus and picked it up again when my youngest turned 1. I ran to stay in shape and eat whatever I wanted, so I would run 5-6 days a week between 3-5 miles at a time. I was never interested in attempting anything longer or harder. I did try a beginner half marathon plan (Hal Higdon) when I was 27, but by the end I was in a lot of pain and never did run a race. I was so clueless back then - I didn't have this thread to teach me anything!
After the 2017 Shamrock race where I ran the 8K (my 3rd time), I was inspired to try the half marathon the following year. I was intimidated by the long runs, but decided since I had recently quit my job that I finally had the time to give it an honest try.
Turns out I love it. I mean some of the long runs are super suck fests, but the sense of accomplishment I get really motivates me! I've run 13.1+ miles 19 times in the last 15 months and now I'm starting a beginner marathon plan.
I haven't lost any toenails yet, but I'm intimately familiar with chafing! I've screamed in the shower on multiple occasions!

Shoes...
I just got a new pair of running shoes. They felt great in the shop when I tried them on - then ended up ordering online when there was a half price sale. They feel great now, but I notice a little bit of tightness around the big toe...
I just went for a quick 30 second jog to see if they immediately bug me, and no it doesn't but I'm worried about how they will handle long runs. They are New Balance and the tops are very very stretchy fabric, and town is 2hr drive away so getting shoes is a major hassle for me.
Just return them?? Shoes I'm usually very much if there are any niggles, don't get them. but they are great apart from a very slight noticeable touching of my big toe on the top of the shoe.0 -

Shoes...
I just got a new pair of running shoes. They felt great in the shop when I tried them on - then ended up ordering online when there was a half price sale. They feel great now, but I notice a little bit of tightness around the big toe...
I just went for a quick 30 second jog to see if they immediately bug me, and no it doesn't but I'm worried about how they will handle long runs. They are New Balance and the tops are very very stretchy fabric, and town is 2hr drive away so getting shoes is a major hassle for me.
Just return them?? Shoes I'm usually very much if there are any niggles, don't get them. but they are great apart from a very slight noticeable touching of my big toe on the top of the shoe.
1. Have you worn new balance before? If so, and they've been fine. Then perhaps keep them.
2. If you don't love them immediately, take them back when possible. (Online return an option?)
3. Keep them. If they suck on long runs, donate them and replace them.
I've never had shoes that I questioned and they turned out alright. Always a regret- no i take that back (doh) i bought some OC's and my toenail barely caught the inseam in an odd way. But no longer. They just pick up gravel and make for terrible trail shoes. I digress... I do like new balance though. But maybe this pair is just off.1 -

Today's notes – No formal club practice this week, so I dropped in on the training session's Thursday workout. Stood around in a dry store watching a thundershower, sat through a beginner's talk on running terminology while we waited for the thunder to go away, then off to the run. A too-short warmup, 15 minutes of hills at tempo, and a too-short cool down added up to modest distance for today. The shower cooled things off a bit, so it was only 82º F (28º C), but it was horribly humid. Garmin says I covered 2.17 miles in my 15 minutes, for an average pace of 6:53 per mile. That's a little slower than I'd normally target for T pace, but with the humidity and hills it was quite reasonable.
Rest day tomorrow, and Saturday I try to run 10 miles for the first time since the June 3 half.

I tend to agree. Your feet tend to SWELL as you run. So if they feel a little tight standing around, then it is likely they will be even tighter as you go. I mean shoes do stretch so might be okay, but normally if they do not feel comfortable when you stand around with them on, they will not get better. IME.

Oh digging through Fitbits threads, I think I found the answer to the problem I had. If you pause the run, then resume, then finish - which I accidentally did this morning - then you loose most of your GPS data. They have known about it for over 6 months and are still trying to fix it. So something for everyone to be aware of if you aren't already.0

5.58 km on the Miserable Miles course. A slow start to the month.
22.8C - Extreme heat for me. Sucked up 1.5 liters of water in less than a hour because of it.
Some parts of the course were overgrown with waist high grass. This forces me into a walk as running is impossible. Still a good outing as I needed the exercise and definitely needed the challenge of Misery Mountain Hill Climb.
Someone took down all the signs - Vandalism? or Town Parks Dept ( my guess ) removing all the Random Signs put in place by athletes over the years marking certain key intersections. I am a solid 8 hr drive north of Calgary ( picture M1 in a straight line ) and only 1 - 10 minute Fuel and washroom stop. So at this time of year the sun is only below the Horizon for about 6 hours with 1.5 hrs of Twilight/Dawn so only 3 hrs of true night. Fireworks would have to start at midnight to truly be spectacular.

1 very slow mile and that will probably be it for me until next week. I about died while running and it was only 76 degrees. Running in 112 is just asking for my own funeral lol

@teerai - that is exactly what we have been doing. I was able to get him to go outside Tuesday night, right as a blast went off behind our yard. Gave him treats and told him to go. He did and zoomed back into the house I also have been putting his snow coat on, it is a stretchy tight fit roughwear and I think works like a thunder shirt. He seems to like it, or at least doesn't object to putting it on.
@AprilRN10 - I am so glad he didn't bite after he knocked you down!
@juliett3455 - too bad about the signs! I hate it when someone takes away your points reference and your motivational signs!
@abutcher2122 - I am thinking it will have to be gym treadmill run or maybe just a swim. With this heat the pool should theoretically be warm enough.0
