Was running late in bad traffic, 2k from subway station, legged it. It was hot and miserable so I'm going to count it.
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)
@mbaker566 Hail my fellow countryman! Hope he gets used to everything soon.
@RunsOnEspresso 2-3 or 3-2 is my go to these days. I also tend to get side stitches when I'm not doing an odd number.
All this talk about fireworks is just like Chinese New Year. Going off the minute it gets dark and continues through all ungodly hours of the night, for at least a week...4 -
@shanaber I was lucky that it was 'friendly.' It was unkempt, smelly, had no tag on it's collar, and its claws were stupid sharp. But it wasn't trying to harm me. It was 'playing' with me. You know, like they do smaller animals until it kills them! It was a large dog, though, and every time I tried to walk away, it would jump even more. It was a run spoiler that day, for sure. I've not gone back down that street since!!
As for everyone's dogs being scared (or not) of fireworks, my cat is terrified. One of them, anyway. The other one could care less. Poor Beezo. It's his birthday, too! Ha! He hides in the closet most of the time, and when he does come out, he does the army crawl.1 -

Bad thunderstorms here, roads flooded out and lots of people still without power. Thankfully my trailer is on top of a hill so we okay.3

2.7 mile slog outdoors and 0.6 on the treadmill for 6.2 outdoor and 1.6 treadmill miles this month so far.5

Hey Everyone! Just posting now, on July 6th. I'm still struggling with knee pain, but I'm pushing through. Been doing a lot of cross training and short runs. Plus, it's so hot out here. I'm going for 20-30 miles this month. No matter what, I'm proud of myself, because I'm still doing this workout thing. Started my running journey in February, and I haven't quit yet.14

Well, I've caught up on all the posts I missed in the June thread and July thread! Phew, that was a lot of posts!
The first 3 weeks of this marathon plan is called a "prep phase" - it's pretty nice and easy, perfect for my vacation.
I'm headed out to do 5 miles this morning - will update when I get back
3/18/2018 Shamrock half marathon
3/24/2018 Don't Sit on Colon Cancer 5K
5/28/2018 Run to Remember 5K
10/7/2018 Crawlin Crab half marathon
10/13/2018 Joggin for Frogmen 5K
11/18/2018 Norfolk Harbor half marathon8 -
I have read about the odd breathing method before but forgot about it. Maybe I'll try 3-4 or 4-3. Anything with 2 just isn't enough for me (I guess that could be the VCD and/or asthma because one makes it hard to breathe in, the other out).
So does this sound like plantar fasciitis? I have never had it before so have no idea. Yesterday afternoon I stood up and the arch of my left foot suddenly was in pain. I don't want to say it snapped or popped but it was just suddenly painful. There's no bruising or swelling. It doesn't bother me when I'm sitting or once I move around a bit. (I cleaned the bathroom later that day with no issues). But this morning when I got out of bed I could barely hobble to let the dogs out. Now that I'm sitting? Nothing.
I used a foot roller I bought for DH since he does have that issue and felt nothing, no pain, no release. My back has been super tight lately so I am wondering if it could be related to that. I don't have shooting pain or anything like that but do have a slight discomfort on my lower back on the left side. It doesn't feel painful or tingly or radiating pain like sciatica would.
Either way, I am not running today. I want to rest/figure this out before marathon training starts. I may take a walk to get some movement in and the pain seems to subside if I walk around. It's just if I've been sitting a bit and first get up and walk that I feel it. Plan to still try my strength workout. And maybe a hot bath to try and relax/loosen my back.4 -
Rest day not scheduled but seems like a good idea.3

UPCOMING RACES
August 25th - Camp New Hope 10k
September 7th - 5k Glow Run

Update - humidity broke and it was 68, breezy, and sunny. Felt great even though my right leg feels awfully stiff. My left foot feel asleep while running I think it has to do with how much sitting around I do on vacation.
7 -
The heat and humidity broke last night - had really good temps for running so did my first speed workout in a loooonnnnnggg time. It actually went better than I anticipated! That's 1 of 3 done for the month.
@shanaber - I ran surf city a couple years ago - it was beautiful! My nephew lives in LA so we ran it together. We also ran the TinkerBell in Disneyland although I think I heard they don't do any runs there anymore?
@noblsheep - your story of the Osaka Marathon reminds me of the Chicago Marathon (although not such a beautiful view!). 1.7 million people along the course. At one point a young man jumped out and ran with me to encourage me. It was an awesome experience but it really was the crowds that made it fun.
@girlinahat - oh goodness those guinea pigs are adorable. I might be tempted to have a little cuddle time instead of running too.5 -
7/1-1.01mi
7/2-1.04mi
7/3-1.04mi
7/4-2.02mi
7/5-3.12mi
7/6-(2 hours of aerial hammock and hoop)
The humidity makes it so i can't breath, the dew point makes it so i can't sweat. fireworks make the dogs panic.
i am not a morning runner. medically and i am not a morning person. plus the more adverse weather i run, the better runner i get to be right
sleeping with a conehead is not the most restful sleep I've ever had

There does appear to be a small discoloration on the bottom of my foot. Looks like a light purple/pink. I can press my arch and the spot without pain.1 -
@RunsOnEspresso - on the surface I would say yes it sounds like it could be PF. I tore mine so it was a more immediate pain and then got better over time. I did go to the sports chiropractor for treatments to help it heal. PF can hurt in the area you describe, from the arch to your heel and is typically worse in the morning. Mine hurt more to walk on than to run because of how I landed on my foot. I would get it checked out by a doctor if it doesn't get better though.
@biketheworld - I ran the inaugural Star Wars HM at Disneyland. They still do some and they are fun because of the 'Disney' atmosphere but the routes are not scenic through the local surrounding community and the very large crowd was mostly just interested in taking pictures with the characters (longer lines than the bathrooms!). I like Surf City, it is close so my husband can take and pick me up after and it goes right by the dog beach we go to. If you run SF and Surf City consecutively you get an additional medal so I will run it again in 2019 but then may take a break from it. Although I now have loyalty status at both that is kind of nice!
We are off to the agility trial - hope to be home before it hits the 117F high there. Home will only be 113F4 -
@RunsOnEspresso Agree it sounds like PF. No pain while sitting, worse in the morning, and the pain easing once you've walked around a bit, is pretty diagnostic (but check with a doctor or physio to be sure). I had it myself once before I started running. It resolved in a few months. I found putting on a supportive shoe first thing in the morning really helped.2

7/1 = 8 miles
7/2 = 3 dreadmill miles and 30 minutes strength training
7/3 = 6 miles
7/4 = 5 miles
7/5 = 3 miles
7/6 = 12 miles
Breaking in the new shoes while giving myself long run heat stress.
Re: New Balence shoes discussion
I used to wear NB exclusively because I have a narrow heel but I also need a wide toe box because of a bunion issue. I recently switched over to Mizuno and love them. My previous toenail issues have completely disappeared.

@RunsOnEspresso I have a running friend that occasionally has plantar issues. She freezes a water bottle and rolls the bottom of her foot a couple of times a day. She says it helps.1 -

Welcome @workaholic_nurse
@ContraryMaryMary that is interesting about the breathing and I actually do that though I didn’t know it was a good thing. Ha ha It’s something that Skip has taken to doing too during track events this year, when she feels her breathing is getting away from her she will take a deeper breath slowly and let it out, if she does a couple in a row she said it makes her feel better and give her a little more.
@Scott6255 when I get a side stitch I use that breathing to stop it, I tell the kids on our team to do the same, also to breath all the way in and exhale all the way out while landing on the opposite foot of the stitch, works every time stopping it
@garygse wow that food poisoning really got you good, glad you are feeling better
@Avidkeo my thoughts on the big toe touching is eventually you will lose a toe nail that way. I’d return them if they are bothering you. Like you said try the next size up.
@PastorVincent I saw the flooding on the news, horrible.
@RunsOnEspresso not sure what to say about the foot, hopefully it was nothing and will go away
@amymoreorless I love those
Coach didn’t make it to XC practice last night and I happened to be driving by so I told the team what to run, they will hate me forever. 5 miles for Varsity in 45 min or under 4 miles for JV in 45 or under and new kids 3 miles in under 30 mins. Then a quick speed work, they hate me. Simple stuff 3 200m, they acted like I tried to kill them.

July goal: 80 miles
7/1: 7.6 miles
7/3: 4.2 miles
7/5: 4.6 miles
7/6: 4.3 miles
20.7/80 miles
4.3 miles today. It started out slow. 79F with 74% humidity and dew point 68. The first half mile I was kind of wondering why I was running. But it got better as I went along. After about a mile I was feeling glad to be out there. My 4th mile ended up being my fastest mile and by the time I got home I was wishing I had more time because I was really just getting into the zone and I wasn't ready to stop.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K8 -
@RunsOnEspresso - going into my third month dealing with PF and it is no fun. Pain is always worse in the morning for the first 3- 5 steps then lets up a little bit. This month the foot is better and almost pain free, after 14 PT sessions. I went to a Sports Medicine doctor for a daignosis - one who specializes in running. His recommedation for me was physical therapy and stretches. He also said I could continue to run within a certain pain threshold.
You may want to rule out any other issues such as a stress facture or tear in the muscle. My PF hurt more when I ran; but it also hurt when I was resting the foot. Sports Medicine doctor recommendation was to roll the foot with a Lacrosse ball, he was not a fan of the frozen water bottle. I do have a friend that uses the frozen water bottle for her PF and it helps her.
Each person is different and what helps one may not be useful for someone else. And I am not a doctor, so all this is my own opinion.

Hugs to everyone dealing with injuries and weather and all that! The heat/humidity seems to have broken here Wednesday night as yesterday and today were both beautiful. I slept in yesterday and skipped strength training in order to try and make up some hours for my day job, then ended up losing about three hours this morning trying to avoid/defuse probably unavoidable social group drama. Lovely.
I slept in about an hour after having trouble going to sleep because of being stressed out over said stupid drama and had that moment of "ug, I don't want to get up!" but I shrugged off that BS and went out anyhow. I'm usually pretty grumpy for the first 10-15 minutes in the morning but once I start moving I'm fine. I decided to try doubling up my run and the lifting I skipped yesterday, which actually went fairly well, though I don't know that I'd want to make it a regular thing. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.
For my run I did another 2 mile out and back on the Greenway and experimented with odd breathing. The mile out went super smooth, right around an 11 minute mile, beautiful weather. On the way back I opened up and it turns out that I've been holding more in the tank than I thought - after breaking a 10 minute mile for the first time three days ago, I absolutely smashed that record and ran a 9'16" mile, and I still felt like I was holding back a bit because I don't like running until I feel barfy. Interesting.
I had a harder time holding the breathing pattern on that second mile, but I'm going to keep playing with it. Obviously something was working today.

@Teerai I don't have a problem with my dog, unless it's a tornado, then she will let me know it's time to take cover. Thunder, fireworks none of that bother her. My first thought is the way people set off fireworks on my street alone I'd be poor giving her treats ha ha
It's not really fully light until about 6AM or a little later.
My dog doesn't even seem to notice fireworks. On the 4th, my husband and I took her for a walk to the top of our hill where you can see lots of fireworks. They were going off all over the place and she didn't even seem to notice. Nothing much bothers that dog. The only thing I have ever seen her get upset by is power tools. when the drill comes out, she is gone!0 -

@lporter229 two of my friends live on the East Coast, literally a couple miles from the beach and they were here in May and both said "it gets light SSOOO early here" ha ha I guess I'm just used to it0 -

I find Mizunos work best for me too. That is what I have bought for the last few years.

Like @juliet3455 I get a lot more daylight than many of you! Sunrise today was 5:15 AM and sunset is 10:02 PM. That means I can run without worrying about reflective gear or lights between 4:30AM and around 10:45PM, maybe a little longer if I pick my route carefully so I'm not interacting with traffic or trip hazards.
But it also means I'm running in the dark at 4PM in the winter. So...4 -

I beat the heat by running early. I try to be out the door by 5:30 a.m. It also keeps the sun exposure to a minimum so I don't have to keep dipping myself in SPF 70. And there are slightly fewer deer flies that early. I hate those F-ers... I go through repellent almost as fast as I go through bourbon. I prefer running when the temps get below freezing, but I pretty much hate winter.

@MegaMooseEsq you are killing it with your paces! You really have figured something out. Very impressive!1
