@shanaber @biketheworld I like that I can run it with my dogs. And I love the area. I just wish it wouldn't take me so long to drive there. Because I don't really want to fly with my girls but they do love running and My Collie has already done half marathons1

Race Report: Red, White and Boom 5K - AKA Meg's very first race ever!
Yesterday night: A lot more anxious than I'd expected to be. I didn't go into this having any real expectations or goals. I wanted to finish, but I've run that distance several times now without stopping and longer distances with only brief walk breaks so that wasn't a huge worry. I ended up doing some gardening and reading to chill out and was asleep before 11 - a little later than I'd hoped, but not bad.
5 AM: Woke up, checked the weather report. Dew point over 70 but no sign of thunderstorms. Took my coffee into the back yard, am promptly bitten five times by mosquitos. Go sit in front of a fan while the pets eat. Drink water and worry about portapotty lines.
6 AM: Awesome supportive husband dropped me off and went to park and I promptly lost my safety pins, which seemed like a big deal for about 20 seconds until I realized that there would be plenty of safety pins at registration. Which there were.
6-6:45 AM: Stood around awkwardly wondering what the heck I was doing here with all these people, crowds not really being my jam. Used the portopotties before there was a big line just to say I did. Got one last kiss when my husband finally got back and then went to line up.
7 AM: Continued to feel awkward and a little panicky standing in the big crowd, but once we started moving I was surprised how smoothly the crowd flowed. I’d started in the 11 minute/mile zone and that seemed about right.
7:05 AM (or so): Started my running mix, realized that this is just another 5K. We’re all running our own race, even if we’re all doing it at the same time and place.
7:15 AM (or so): Hit the mid-way water station, got Gatorade because I thought that was the only option, kind of regretted it. I know electrolytes and blah blah blah, but I'm used to just water.
7:21 AM: Got a text from my husband to look for him to the left just before the finish line. Gave him a big smile and wave, which was easy, because I felt great.
7:26 AM: Crossed the finish line, appropriately enough shortly after my playlist reached Nicki Minaj’s “I’m the Best”. I didn’t time that but it worked perfectly as that's sort of my running anthem.
7:30 AM (or so): Ate a hot dog and drank some chocolate milk. Enjoyed my new bling.
I feel pretty good about how I did for a first race - 884 out of 2001 overall, 437 out of 1262 females, 78 out of 209 in my age group. I ran a slight PR for overall pace at that distance (10'16"), but nothing too crazy. And then I came home, took a two hour nap, and had friends over to play D&D until maybe a half an hour ago. Now I'm planning on sitting in a dark, air conditioned room and reading until I somehow fall asleep in spite of the fireworks and stuff. Good times.
My stepmom wanted to know if I was planning on running more races, and I really haven't decided yet. I'm still planning on running the October race either as a 5 or 10 K, and I did have a good time today, but there's a bit of me that worries that I might get too competitive and stop enjoying myself if I get too into races. When I'm just running for myself, I'm only competing against myself and my spreadsheet, and I find that motivating. Competition against others implies losing, which implies embarrassment, which as an individual with social anxiety is the absolute worst. And although the fun of running with other people was definitely there today, I have to recognize that the competitiveness was there too, and I'd hate that dynamic to take over running. So we will see.

@MegaMooseEsq Well done! Congrats on your first race! I run races not to win, but to give myself targets to train for, and checkpoints to see how I am doing. So in that spirit, I suggest you keep them in your life.4 -
6-6:45 AM: Stood around awkwardly wondering what the heck I was doing here with all these people, crowds not really being my jam.
Every time I do a race I go through this:- Why am I getting up so early to run? I could be sleeping.
- Why am I driving 40 minutes? This is dumb. I hate driving.
- Ugh, why are all these people here? Where can I go to be alone and not look weird before this starts?
- I am never doing this again. I hate this. Waking up, driving, people, and no coffee yet? *kitten* this.
Yet somehow more races keep ending up on my calendar.15 -
@MegaMooseEsq Way to go! Half the battle with races is just showing up. Which you did today, and I did not. I have my reasons, you have your medal.3

July Running Totals (miles)
7/1 – rest day
7/2 – 5.11 not easy enough
7/3 – 4.14 warmup, speed work, cool down
7/4 – 6.22 commute to/from town park
July running total to date – 15.47
Nominal July mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy. Build base. Work toward being able to run Wineglass in September.
Today's notes – Deliberately slept late and missed all the morning 4th of July races. By mid-afternoon, I was feeling pretty good. Decided to run over to the town park for the fireworks. Got dressed, and it started raining.
Check the weather. Itty bitty pop up thundershower right on top of me. Wait it out. Around 7:15 it has mostly passed. The temperature is down to 88º F (31º C). Step outside, and it's like a sauna. Oh, well. Run over to the town park. Pass some people walking toward the celebration, have this odd thought that someone might ask why I'm running, and I'll say, "Because it's too far to walk." No one asks.
Stop right at 5K. Walk around, sweat profusely. Take a sip of my Nuun, worry about it lasting for the commute back. So I pop an S-tab, chase it with water. If needed, I can refill my bottle at a drinking fountain. Walk around all the exhibits; typical July 4th stuff. Look at my HR. 92, even after walking around. It's warm and humid. Sit down in the shade to wait for the fireworks.
Cool down. HR goes down to 64. Notice a couple bugs. It's a bit cooler. See a gnat flying around my arm. It's an hour and a half till the fireworks start. Bug spray is at home. Hmm. Stand up, walk around a bit, run home. Feels cooler, ran a bit slower, everything felt good till I stepped inside and I was freezing. I cool my house to 78º F.
Back outside for stretches, then come in and quickly get out of my soaked running clothes. Shower, ice my ankles, relax. It's been a good day, even if I did miss seeing the fireworks.

@MegaMooseEsq Great job! I've found that the competitiveness can be a lot of fun, and pushes me to do better than I would if I was out running by myself. But it would be hard for that competitiveness to take over, when I'm nearly always closer to the back than the front, so in my case it hasn't ruined racing for me (quite the opposite, actually). I'm OK with most people beating me, if I knew I did a good job. My kids will ask if I won, and typically my response is, "I won for me," or "I beat a guy dressed like Zorro," etc.
Met my friend to run today, and then tacked on a couple km on at the end, pushing myself to up the pace (including "up the hill"). It felt really good.
Upcoming race:
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k4 -
7/1 - 15.0 km
7/2 - rest, 2 km walk
7/3 - 5.1 km
7/4 - 7.2 km
27.3/120 km
Garmin Canada was closed for the 4th of July. Go figure.
Tonight's run was according to plan, though a bit later than I wanted to set out. Tomorrow is supposed to be a lot warmer but I will suck it up and head out anyway.

@MegaMooseEsq Even when I run formal races, I am still really only competing against myself. The first ever one I did, I finished second to last. Now I finish somewhere in the middle. I like the race atmosphere because I enjoy feeling connected with so many people who enjoy something I also enjoy. I don't know anyone there, and I hate crowds and strangers, but for some reason I still enjoy it! Good job getting it done!
@polskagirl01 I love your response to your children asking if you won! Mine is similar.4 -
biketheworld wrote: »Has anyone here run the Columbia Gorge Marathon or HM? https://www.columbiagorgemarathon.com and if so what did you think? I was looking at emails and it popped up - now I want to run the HM with Hobbes the Vizsla! It looks awesome.
So I had to look this up - sounds fantastic! And you should definitely do this with Hobbes. What's the max miles he's run? I took my shelter/rescue/shiba inu mostly dog 8 miles a few years ago but it wiped him out. Before that I owned a German Shorthair Pointer and that dog could go and go and go and go. I used to run trails through the woods - I'd take him off the leash and just let him run, call him back, let him run etc. I figured for every mile I ran, he ran 4. And when we got home, he'd still have energy. I loved that dog so much - but after he died I knew I needed a dog with a little less energy!
[/url]
@biketheworld - we have done 16 together and yes he still has energy. When we go to the dog beach he runs and runs and runs... sleeps on the way home and then wants to run around some more! He doesn't like the heat much though... today on our 8 mile we stopped several times on the last mile + home so he could cool down in the shady grass. I figure October in Oregon should be mostly cool, definitely cooler than here!
@mbaker566 - the area is beautiful! It would take us a couple of days to drive there too. I won't put Hobbes in the cargo of a plane either.2 -
Got out later today than planned because of a party and fireworks behind our house until 2:30am. Hobbes was a basket case, DH slept through it all... I was soaked completely from my shoes to the top of my head when I got home and we stopped a few times on the way back for Hobbes the Vizsla to cool off in the shady grass.
I had one interesting point where I passed a woman who was walking and after I said Good Morning, said to me have a nice walk as I was RUNNING by her! Walk? Walk? Was I really that slow that she thought I was walking??? Wow!
Hope those in the US had a wonderful 4th!

This January I randomly came upon a post about UTMF (ultra trail Mount Fuji). I’m not sure why, but this race spoke to me loud and clear. I need to do this, and to that end, I need to get myself back up running.
Ok... this seriously intrigued me, so thanks to you I did not get to sleep until nearly 1:00 a.m. reading about this beautiful, rugged race and watching a 45 minute video on the 2018 race that took place in April. The part at the end of the 64 year old finally completing the full 107 miles (170k) after three failed attempts was touching and inspiring.
Are you thinking of doing the STY (57 miles/92k) or the full monster? And I wonder how hard it is to get in... There is no way I could ever manage to get myself to Japan to run this, but did it ever get me dreaming and my running juices going... I hope you do it someday (and I believe you will) and I will stick around in this group of idiots just to read your race report!
I actually didn't know such a video existed (!) until you mentioned it... seems I now have something to do tonight. I have my eye on STY at the moment, as 90k sounds a bit more doable than 170k at my current abilities.
The raffle is easier for foreigners as opposed to Japanese runners, as they are in different pools and this race is far less popular than, say, UTMB or Hong Kong 100 among the international community. They do require a certain number of ITRA points to register, which I will be trying to do for the next year or two. I am totally psyched that you feel so excited about it, and I'll certainly post any progress!3 -
Re: Where In The World - I'm based in Beijing, China, and travel quite a bit. Any other Asianers in this thread?
Re: Favorite race
The first that comes to mind is Osaka Marathon. The crowds were awesome. People lined the streets from 0k to finish line. A little girl maybe two or three years old noticed me dragging my feet at around 26k and insisted on giving me a hard candy. The 32.5k aid point was manned by old grannies from a nearby snack street. There was a huge uphill at 37k and a group of cosplayers lined up from bottom to top, high fiving every runner who passed by. A guy stood at the corner of 40k holding a sign that said "I've lost the lottery for this race 7 years in a row!"
Another is Thousand Island Lake Marathon. I'd go every year just for the scenery. This is what it looked like last year.

@MegaMooseEsq I really loved your race report. It was as if you've written dozens of them!! Very well done. I loved how you explained your anxiety. @shanaber You have more patience than me. You must really love Hobbes the Vizsla.I had one interesting point where I passed a woman who was walking and after I said Good Morning, said to me have a nice walk as I was RUNNING by her! Walk? Walk? Was I really that slow that she thought I was walking??? Wow!
Wow, indeed!! Man, that would have been burning me up all day! Hugs.
@noblsheep Wow, Osaka and Thousand Island Lake sound amazing. And nice to know there are more non-Americans here than I thought.
No offence, Americans. It always just seems to me like you have so much fun bonding, even though you're probably 1,000s of kms apart like the rest of us.

Deceptively hot 73 degrees. Very high humidity. Was pretty dang tough to get up when my mental alarm went off at 3:45am after the late night concert and fireworks. But I got up and slogged through it. Took advice of recent posts and ran usual morning 10k backwards (not literally, but in the reverse direction). But honestly, I DID see a guy running backwards a couple days ago...guess he misunderstood the jist of the 'backwards' concept.

oh dear. Got up early, dressed in my still stinky from the gym Tuesday night workout gear, went downstairs intending to go out for a run......
got distracted by having cuddle time with the guinea pigs instead. To be fair, it's less than two weeks since my marathon......

i was going to to do 4 miles with a build up or fartleks but there was lightening and thunder. so that seemed like a bad idea so i did run inside and did 20 flights of stairs. then the rain let up but the fireworks were going off all over private and public so since i don't run without a dog...no outside for me
he hasn't got the hang of the cone and so i'm all scratched from him so the run involved dodging him and his cone. he is a foster dog from Shanghai, China @noblsheep and there is still remodeling taking up time

@MegaMooseEsq Regarding lifting insoles in running shoes: a few years ago, the girlfriend of a former colleague of mine (I know that almost sounds like "I know somebody who knows somebody who ...", but I actually talked to her in person ) had different leg lengths. Most of the time she had this kind of wedge in one shoe that lifted that heel (rather than the entire foot, because of the not-fitting-inside-the-shoe-otherwise issue), but not for running. She claimed she didn't need the insole for running because only one foot touches the ground at a time. So the difference shouldn't lead to any tilt in the hips or twist in the back at all, because the legs were independent. I have no idea if she got that from a doctor or if it was her own theory, but if that is true, at leased running on cambered roads should not be *worse* for you than for anyone else. Although avoiding it whenever you can safely do so is for sure the better choice.1
