Question for sweaty runners and heat stress issues:
Apologies if this is TMI...
I am pretty sure I gave myself some kind of heat stress on my run this morning. Either that, or I got some kind of very short lasting illness. I got very weak at mile 11 out of 12 - stomach cramping, nausea, GI upset, LOTS of sweating, foot cramps, and headache. After I got home (and finished vomiting), I took a cool shower and passed out for a few hours. I feel much better now - just tired.
I am a very heavy sweating runner so I plan my route around water sources. I filled my water bottle up 3 times on my run. It is a large handheld Nathan hydration thing. I also downed a bottle of gateraid before starting.
I am wondering if I developed a low-sodium issue.... I know a few runners who carry salt tablets with them on long runs. Has anyone tried that? Does it help? I have tried NUUN tablets in the past but they tear my stomach up. Are there better alternative brands? I have been craving salt like mad this past month. I am wondering if long runs in the heat are depleting my reserves.3 -

You could be burning through all your electrolytes. Water is NOT enough on longer runs.
You could try any of the following:
1) Drinking Gatorade while you run instead of water
2) Drinking TailWind ( Amazon ) instead of Gatorade and water
3) Taking S-Caps ( Amazon) with your water
4) Eat Clif Gel Bloks (Amazon ) while you run
5) Some other means of replenishing lost electrolytes

@amymoreorless I don't sweat at all. I do use nuun fine. But i have found that i really like adding some rocks of pink and white salt to my water (potassium and sodium chloride) aka no calorie runners crack lol!
You might try the salt tables or something similar and see how you do. It does sound like heat stress and/or electrolyte imbalance.
Let us know. Valuable information there!
ETA it might not taste great, but you could also toss in a magnesium tablet. I like to add frozen blueberries to my water. Post run snack.
Clarify- *Blueberries are not electrolytes. Just flavor.

Yeah, never mind. I am actually sick. Ewwwwww....... Welp, rest day for me tomorrow.8 -
4 miles today, mid-morning. I wasn't satisfied with my race performance due to lack of conditioning in the heat, so today we ran a little later even though it was already hot, and ran a little longer than the usual 5k. I was planning to gradually increase distances this month anyway since my leg is holding up fine. Run went great, heat annoying but not painful.
As usual I love what running does for my blood sugar - had a big pita sandwich and serving of pasta after, bg peaked at 105. For comparison if I tried to eat that without running first it would put me at 160 something.
Speaking of the heat, on the trail we were passed by two city policemen in a golf cart riding around making sure everyone using the trail had a bottle of cold water! That was unexpected and nice!

we are runners, i don't think there is such thing as tmi @amymoreorless9

@amymoreorless I've not tried mizuno, they are hard to find for me, or are above my price bracket. We pretty much have asics or New Balance. Interesting what you said about NB is exactly what I like about them but couldn't put into words, the firmness around the heel and mid foot while leaving plenty of room for toes! I have a pair of asics that just weren't quite right. They have become good walking shoes but not good running because they are too lose in the heel.
Hopefully my new pair will come early next week..
Morning everyone! Long run today. I had breakfast an hr ago, so I'll go out in the next hr or so. Looking forward to it and last lun for week 1!
Thanks again for all the advice, this feels like a good plan to be on.3 -
Finally, a nice day! Got out and ran 3.3 miles around lunch time and it was just beautiful out.
Not much else to report. Have a great weekend!7 -

@LaDispute57 I have a bag and a half of it sitting around. I have had mixed results with it. Probably should test it again this weekend.0

@PastorVincent It's worth a try... I have to order more... My dad decided to clean the pantry and threw out a virtually brand new bag because he didn't know what it was. I was almost ready to conclude that making it to 85 was good enough for him....0

So did a 10k not a 8 because I felt like it. I even had enough gas in the tank to sprint the last split. *kitten* fitbit didn't save my splits or map again. I'm fuming. So I'll be using strava from now on. I was really careful not to pause and resume but I noticed my phone was unlocked when I got it out of my bag and it had paused so who knows if that's happened in my bag.
I was averaging around 6:20 - 6:30 per km and I did the last km in 6:00 so did the whole 10k in 1:03:58. Im pretty stoked about that. I kept trying to slow a bit but in the end it didn't matter! So happy about the run. And so pissed about fitbit.11 -
Rest day today. Saw the podiatrist. The Achilles is still a little fat, but much better than it was. A week off Mobic, see if I feel like I need another month, do consistent stretching and icing after working out, don't stupidly overdo stuff.
I can handle this. Except maybe the part about not stupidly overdoing stuff.12 -
@shanaber sadly our pool always gets packed so there’s never really any room to do any laps0

Wasn't feeling it this morning. I haven't been sleeping well and it is wearing on me. Decided I would do my walk this afternoon instead. I ended up taking a nap this afternoon which I haven't done in a long time. Then walked with my daughter to the library. Des Moines does a challenge each summer where you visit all 31 parks in the 31 days of July and document your visits on social media. On a whim we decided to start the challenge today so after the library we walked to the closest park and took our photo. I figure we can plan to do walks whenever we visit a park just to get my step count up.
July 1 nothing
July 2 2.84 miles on elliptical
July 3 2.4 miles run/walk D2W4 of C25K
July 4 nothing official
July 5 2.28 miles run/walk D3W4 of C25K
July 6 2.28 mile walk

@amymoreorless I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well Until you said you were sick I was going to recommend Mio sport with electrolytes. Skip was getting sick, like pass out during a race sick. Now she alternates it with water everyday and has been fine. I drink it too. You can buy it in any food store by the powered drinks. Feel better.0

Yesterday was a total rest day, and much appreciated. Just a short 2 miles today. I have a 15k race on Sunday, so went to packet pick-up this afternoon. This is the biggest race I've done so far by a long shot, with something like 18,000 people between the 15k and the 5k. The expo was fun, they had food trucks and if I hadn't just had a lunch meeting I would have really dug in. But I still had ice cream of course. I'm excited for the race, I think the crowd will be fun. I'm doing this with my friend, this was her goal race, so I'll probably run it at her pace and use it more as a long run than a race. But we'll see.
Upcoming races:
7/8/18 Boilermaker 15K, Utica NY
7/28/18 Chocolate Challenge 5k, Syracuse NY
8/19/18 Falmouth Road Race (7 miles), Falmouth, MA
8/26/18 18.12 Challenge, Sackets Harbor, NY
10/28/18 Marine Corps Marathon, Arlington VA
@amymoreorless sorry you are sick! Sounded like a heat sickness, maybe the heat just made it worse. I made note of the recommendations myself, need to work more on fueling and electrolytes.
Hoping everyone working through injuries is on the mend. Glad the heat has broken for many of us, but stay hydrated and run smart this weekend. I'm currently sitting out on my patio in a long sleeve shirt because the breeze was making me a bit chilly. I love it!

@marisap2010, @amymoreorless and @Avidkeo - I wanted to love NB for all of those reasons but they rubbed wrong on the side of my foot. I wanted them to have a more cushioned pair for my easy runs when my legs were more tired. I run in pretty minimal 0 drop shoes otherwise. When I started running I wore Mizunos only, but they wore out super fast (might have had to do with my weight though). Have you had any issues with them not lasting as long as you would expect, 3-400 miles?
@amymoreorless - That sounds so scary but my first thought was extreme dehydration. I am not a huge NUUN fan either but have found that the Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration works great, don't cause me any stomach issues and I like the taste. They have the powder you mix with water and they also have what I would call 'fruit drops'. I use those on all my long runs. Definitely need something with electrolytes! Also feeling sick still could be related to the dehydration if that is what it was. It takes your body a while to come back to normal afterwards.
Went to the agility trial this morning and it was hot, hot, hot... unfortunately it is just as hot at home (114F!). I am waiting for a friend to drop by some tickets then I am heading to the gym and the treadmill.1 -

One thing you might try for a week or two is to soak in a warm epsom salt bath. The skin absorbs a good amount of mag and other things. Thought to detoxify. Maybe research optimum time and temp but 12-40 min is one standard.
Just don’t overdo in one bath.
Can start as a foot soak too.

Finally!! First run of July, 3.55km/45km Weather has finally cooled, only 18°C. It was a short run but I'm glad I finally got out.6
-
@skippygirlsmom I love Mio, although I use it just as a flavour-enhancer rather than for electrolytes. For running I just go with Powerade and Nuun tablets (not together of course, that would be just...weird).
I feel like I'm back at as close to 100% as I can possibly get, and this morning's run felt great. A little breeze would have been nice, but other than that it was pleasant given that it's July.
In other news, having a holiday in the middle of the week leaves me kind of feeling like my kids have been playing with the week, and now the days are not where I left them.

@shanaber I can't comment on Miles because I haven't really kept track or trained in earnest before. I got my current pair in November last year and absolutely love them, never had an issue. That said I think they are starting to wear because my left foot was cramping a little, which for me is a fit issue I think. So time to get a new pair, especially for long runs0

@shanaber Yes, the Mizunos seem to wear out faster than NB shoes. I am only on my second pair so we shall see if the trend continues. I am glad to see my toenails again. I missed having all 10 of them.
I am feeling better this evening. I have run through 3 Texas summers but I have never had the heat effect me as badly as it did this afternoon. It is actually a few degrees cooler than last week - I don't know what happened. I was running at an easy pace -- Weird. After the GI revolt stopped this afternoon, I stepped in the scale - 7 pounds lost in 24 hours. That is kind-of scary. I am defiantly spending tomorrow hydrating and resting.9 -

3 easy miles tonight. I’ll get in a longer run in the morning when it is *hopefully* a little cooler.
@shanaber I honestly don’t keep close track of the miles on my shoes, but I haven’t had a big problem with the Mizunos wearing out too quickly. I have a few pair and rotate through them though, so I might not be the best person to ask.2 -
Oh i forget to update my totals. 10k this morning so 28/90km done!3

Thanks for the info on the Mizuno's. I have been avoiding them but maybe it is time to check them out again.
So we broke heat records today from the mid 1830's! I may have mentioned earlier that it hit 114 in Anaheim! We have never seen it that hot here and we have lived her for a long time (my husband grew up in the area). Hobbes and I were home from the agility trial a bit after noon but it was already over 110 there. All the dogs were running slow as you would expect. I felt bad for the judges and others who had to be there all day! 2 more days of it which should hopefully be a bit cooler!
I did not even contemplate running outside. I headed over to the gym and ran intervals on the treadmill. I haven't run on a treadmill in a while so it ended up being kind of fun. Got in 4.25 per the treadmill but Strava said not that much. Hmmm - I'm going with the treadmill

Like @juliet3455 I get a lot more daylight than many of you! Sunrise today was 5:15 AM and sunset is 10:02 PM. That means I can run without worrying about reflective gear or lights between 4:30AM and around 10:45PM, maybe a little longer if I pick my route carefully so I'm not interacting with traffic or trip hazards.
But it also means I'm running in the dark at 4PM in the winter. So...
@sarahthes You sound like you're even further north than I am south.
It starts getting light at 7:30 am at the moment, so all my morning runs are in the dark.
@Avidkeo Nice 10 km!!
Today I did my 17th stint as parkrun Run Director.
A nervous moment when the rain on the phone made the timekeeper's app add a bunch of results, but we sorted it out partly because we had the backup timekeeper's results.
Happy it all went well.5
