Hoping to get a run in tonight. I was super tired this morning and since it was already 75 at 6. I walked my dog this morning and broke into a sweat in like a minute, clearly not going for a run was wise. I don’t mind being drenched in sweat when it’s cool out but when it’s hot that’s just death. Lol. So I spent my morning trying to find a race that starts before 8a. Sadly not many options but I found a ton of fun races with pretty cool bling. If my dog wasnt so spastic I’d do a race with him so he could get a medal cuz that’s pretty awesome. I did decide to do a half marathon for my birthday so I’m pretty stocked for that. Guess it’s time to follow an actual training plan.4

03/07 3.16 miles

12/07 3.19 miles

Had my most enjoyable run of the week. I bought new insect repellant yesterday and was a little over generous spraying in on. With sweat it kept dripping onto my lips which I of course licked - yuck! But boy did it work, I felt like some kind of space mother ship being attacked by lots of little pests that weren't able to get a hit. Sorry able that, maybe I found that runners high!

Now to catch up!
@HonuNui - Love, love, love your snorkeling pictures!
@sarahthes - I hate when I swallow bugs! Our river is now dry so all the gnats and bugs seem to be gone, to they just don't like the heat!
@mbaker566 - I was going to suggest taking tasty treats with you on your run to encourage your speed demon to stay with you and run at your speed (assumes he is food/treat driven)? That is also how I got Hobbes initially to walk and then run at my side. If he stayed I would pop him a treat. If not, a voice correction and when he did it right another treat. For a while he got a ton of treats but he is now really good. I almost always still have treats with me and give him one unexpectedly just to continue to encourage the behavior.
@skippygirlsmom - good luck with your race tomorrow! I hope it isn't super hot and humid! Also hope the doctor can sort out Skip's knee issue. I too know when my shoes are wrong because my knees start to hurt.
@LaDispute57 - I remember seeing pictures of your shoe collection! I like my Merrill Bare Access but they are too tight with my orthotic in so I either take a chance and run w/o which I have done on occasion or not run in them. I wish Carson would make a road shoe! I have heard such great things about them.
Love the Ninja Runners story and that your brother pulled it together to finish with a 45min buffer!
@cburke8909 - great race and race report! Sounds like you killed it!
@5BeautifulDays - hope you can get that hip sorted out soon! @elise4270 knows all about piriformis and hip issues and could probably give some stretching advice that might help until you get into the doctor.
@amymoreorless - I agree 100%... I have time this summer to run whenever I want and now it is just consistently hot and not cooling off overnight. We are breaking records almost every day now so it is definitely hotter! I hate it. I hate having to go to the gym to run on the treadmill. I want it to be Fall or Spring or anything but hot!
@BruinsGal_91 - I usually abide the rule of not running in anything new for a race - assuming I am going to 'race' it and not just run it. If you haven't run at all in the new shoes and you want to PR this race, so will be running all out, I would go with your older shoes.
@abutcher2122 - So Cal is NOT supposed to be this hot and humid! I have 12 to run tomorrow and plan (I hope) to get up at 5:30 to get out before the heat settles in. If it is already getting hot and is humid like this morning I won't be able to get it done. I agree on the races - I was looking for a 5 or 10k but they all start at 8 or later. It is just too hot for me otherwise. Which HM are you going to run for your birthday?
I did not run yesterday, got up too late after hanging out for a bit with my daughter who was here just for the night.I went to the gym to run on the treadmill and could not get my wireless headphones to connect to my phone. No problem I had my back up wired headphones... but no adapter for my iPhone Did I stay and brute it out with nothing to distract me? Nope... I got in my car and went home and took a nap instead I was also still so sore from my Tuesday training so I feel like it was just as well. Even training last night was hard but the focus was more on legs. Today I did get out an run and it was miserably hot and humid. Midway it was 83F with a feels like of 87F, 70% humidity and dew point of 65. I got it done though not the 6-7miles I wanted. Tonight we are going into LA for the Hollywood Bowl, hoping I can get enough sleep to not be exhausted on my long run in the morning!

@shanaber
i wish she was. she is fear driven. you could put a hot dog or cheese in her mouth and she will spit it out if she anxious. she goes from ok to shut down in 0 sec flat.
the running calms her down and gives her confidence but she won't run on her own either so i can't get her to exercise on her own before. and soon as we turn to home we go from 11:20ish to 9:50ish. HOME!!! so i have at least .2mi of pulling
i'll have to continue with the training. she is way too sneaky for a head halter which is how i originally trained my old lady to run when she was younger.
suprisingly, the border terrier i'm fostering is the worst3 -
I have seen a persistent theme about having to run in the overbearing heat, but this past winter, which refused to go away, I was so disgusted (I cannot stand winter) that I swore that no matter how hot and unbearable it got I would not utter a single word of complaint about the heat this summer. So I am keeping my word even though it has been challenging at times.12

I am joining! I can do 30 miles this month. I do different classes and training during the week and can only run 3 days a week but I love challenges and getting to know people!9

Well done @Avidkeo - smashed it!!!
Welcome @mjone1997 - the only problem you’ll have getting to know people in this thread is in keeping up with it!!! Walk away for more than 24 hours and there’ll be three pages of catch up good stuff going on!3 -

Yeah, I sort of quit going to all of the rest of the forums when I joined up here a couple of months ago.6 -

My sister-in-law has a border terrier. Fabulous dogs.1 -

This might be the healthiest, most engaging, helpful, encouraging group on MFP. I don't go any anyplace except here. Except when I disappear for lengths of time and suddenly re-appear with a re-created self. But I blame ex-wives and stalker gfs for that.8 -
@lporter007 wrote @cburke8909- Congrats on meeting your 5K goal!! I think you are my running twin. If I remember right, didn't you recently run a half marathon PR in just under 1:40? (sorry if I have you confused with someone else) My HM PR is 1:39:56 and my 5K is 21:57. Of course, I ran that 5K in March when it was nice and cold out. My most recent evening 5K in sweltering evening heat was a full minute and a half slower, so maybe we are not running twins after all Great job!!!
You are correct, it looks like we are running mirrors of each other.
@PastorVincent "323rd mile" ever wonder how autocorrect works. It is a great "smart"phone feature. 😉 😀2 -

Upcoming Races:
Wineglass Marathon 9/30
It poured this afternoon while at work, but it cleared up right around the time I arrived home, so I went out for my 3 miler. I’m so happy it is the weekend. I’m really looking forward to a couple of longer runs this weekend in the cooler morning and at a location other than my subdivision.5 -
Whenever I think that it's too damn hot, I remember running in this at 9 degrees F, and then I STFU... lol

My hip's been hurting since before I started back to running, and running doesn't make it feel worse--but I suspect that if I want to keep running and run longer distances, I'm going to have to work on this.
@shanaber thanks for the tag. I've been skimming the thread and missed this.
Oh @5BeautifulDays i am sorry your in pain.. Okay... My first suggestion is to continue to run as you tolerate. My surgeon never said stop.
Second find someone to work with that wont dismiss piriformis syndrome (dgs) as a thing. PT massage is most helpful.
Third. Stretch, foam roll, do plenty of self massage too.
Fourth. Strengthen your glute max. Chances are that it weak and your piriformis is overworked. Donkey kicks and glute squeezes every other day.
And finally watch for signs of nerve impingment.

So I did something crazy. Normally I run alone and I am very much an introvert (hard to believe when you see me online, I know). But I agreed tentatively, assuming I can get the time off from work, to do a trail Ragnar with a team of other diabetics in October. The most crazy thing is that I found this on a Facebook group and I have never met any of the others before. The distance for each runner is pretty short (about 15.5 miles total spread across 3 legs), but it should be interesting.16
