10 miles. Should have been longer but 71 dew point + 90 degrees was too much for me, ran out of water and came home.6 -
@skippygirlsmom - Don't tell anyone, but I broke all the rules and wore my brand new Saucony's. And they felt great. And what's even better is I don't have that niggling calf pain I get when I wear my Brooks.
Congrats to you and Skip on your race.
I ran a 5k race this morning round a local lake. It was very hot and humid with not much shade and my time suffered a little bit. Last year I ran the same race in 27:30 and won my age-group. This year I ran it in 29:15 and came fourth. Although, to be fair I don't think I can blame the heat seeing as last year according to my Garmin data the temperature was 77 deg F, and today it was 70 deg F.
But it's a lovely location for a race (so lovely that it's actually my second race there this year, and I have another one booked, and there's the potential for two more).

@MegaMooseEsq feeling your pain on the late night.
Got home late last night and when woke up this morning, had a nasty abrasion/popped blister behind the big toe of my right foot. No running til it heels, hopefully just a few days
Aww... Just suck it up and run barefoot2 -
At mile 10, pretendin' the heat ain't botherin' me...

Today's notes – The rain disappeared from the forecast. 75º F (24º C) at gun time, with a dew point in the low 60s. Felt pretty good . . . until the sun came out about mile 4. I knew it was warm, knew it was humid, and totally misjudged the impact of the weather. It *was* a pretty morning, on the shores of Lake Ontario:
It would have been a good day for an 8 mile race. But I was running a half marathon. Went out fast, as planned. Moderated my pace for miles 4 and 5, as planned. By mile 6, it was a matter of just trying to hold as stead a pace as I could, maybe fade to a 7:15 pace. At the mile 8 flag, my watch said 56:03, having just moved above a 7 minute average. And then things began to fall apart.
At one hour, I knew I'd need to slow down. Tried to run easy for 2 minutes. Manage to run easy for 1 minute, then sped back up. At mile 9, I knew I'd need walking breaks. Walked from the 9 mile flag to the 15K flag, then started running. Made myself run past the 10 mile flag to the aid station, then stopped for water. Ran a bit more, and my Achilles complained. Started walking. A guy I knew passed me. Ran with him a few paces, felt good, ran ahead. Calf cramp. slow to a walk.
Walk past the mile 11 flag. Try running a bit, because it's an awfully long walk to the finish line. Run till a calf cramps, then walk. At the mile 12 flag, there is shade. Can I run 1.1 miles from here? Give it a try. Easy running feels possible. I start passing folks who have passed me. Late in the race I see the guy I had run a few paces with. Pour it on, pass him. End up finishing in 1:45:54, my slowest half marathon ever. I was surprised it was that fast; it seemed like I was walking far too much to finish that fast.
Poetic justice, there was another guy in my age group who managed a 1:41 half. So I only came in 2nd in my age group, a bit of an embarrassment for how badly I mismanaged the race. Perhaps if I'd set out to run a 7:15 pace instead of a 7:00 pace, I could have run the entire course. Anyway, the age group award was a 24 oz. beer mug:
Smart thing: I'd brought a towel and dry clothes. Got changed, and was a bit more comfortable. The post-race food didn't even look good. There were no bananas, and I wanted a banana. So I got in my car and drove home. Fought highway hypnosis all the way home, between 10 and 11 AM. Had a banana, an orange, some Greek yogurt, and some coffee; and had to go down for a nap. Real food didn't even sound good.
After the nap, I felt better and had lunch around 3. In hindsight, I think I had a mild case of heat exhaustion. The bad: I didn't manage my pace very well for the heat and humidity. The good: I had S-Caps with me. Took one about 6.6 miles in, took another while walking. Hydrated. Took 2 gels; the second was a Clif Double Expresso, and was just too thick and heavy in my stomach. That should have been a clue, but in real time I didn't think about it. I was smart enough to walk when my calves or Achilles said to walk.
Now I don't think I'm any worse for the wear, but it was quite an experience this year. Maybe I'll run Shoreline again next year just to see if I can manage heat and humidity better than I did this time.

@skippygirlsmom way to go! And to Skip. Even injured she finds a way to pull it out. That's beast mode.
@MobyCarp you did all the right things considering the conditions and your present status. Good race.2 -

I think I'm going to write off the entire month of July... I've been struggling with ankle and foot pain for the last couple months and now the back of my left knee has a sharp pain and it's difficult to raise my leg or walk so I'm taking the month and hopefully I'll be back running in August. Good luck all!14
-
@MobyCarp Your worst mile pace is better than my best! I think you're amazing. Glad you didn't hurt yourself in the heat, even if it didn't go off as planned.
@weat0043 I'm coming back from a ruptured Baker's cyst behind my knee - I hope you see a doctor! I tried to tough it out far too long and ended up sidelined much longer than I would have if I had dealt with it sooner.2 -

@PastorVincent @workaholic_nurse @BruinsGal_91 @Scott6255 thank you
@BruinsGal_91 glad the new shoes worked out…shame on you new shoes on race day ha ha
Great job on the race, looks so pretty there
Nice job on the 10 miles @LaDispute57 you look cool, not hot at all
Woohoo @amymoreorless yeah for ice cream
@MobyCarp great job considering everything. Nice mug and medal. What race doesn’t have bananas?
@Gary_Z how adorable is your dog!
@weat0043 sorry about your leg, feel better
I forgot to say in my race report from today, the stupidest thing happened at the water stop, in a 4 mile usually wouldn’t stop, but I ate a bug and needed to get rid of him from my teeth so I want a mouth of water to rinse and spit. The stop was at the point where the 4 mile went one way and the 8 mile went another, 3 women in front of me stopped at the table, but didn’t grab their cup and move, they stood there, honestly in front of the table picked up their cups of water and started to drink them. I said as I reached around one, you can’t stand here you need to move. Honestly I had to tell them that?

Our Hollywood Bowl outing was fun as usual last night and we should have been home well before midnight but an overturned big rig made that impossible. We didn't get to bed until after 1am. I changed my alarm from 5 to 6 and got up to run as planned but my stomach was queasy so I didn't get out the door until after 8. It wasn't too warm yet - barely 70F but very humid. About 2 miles out I ran into a running acquaintance I haven't seen for a while. This is an older runner with BQ times. I believe he just turned 75 because he was talking about the extra room for qualifying now that he had aged up again. He wanted to talk about running, about races, about training and recovery from a car accident as well as his military career in Japan and on and on. This is not someone I felt I could just give an excuse and walk/run on my way. Not only do I respect his running but he also trains disadvantaged teens to get them to their first marathon. Normally when I see him he has 5-10 kids running with him. He takes them to races all over this area so by the time they run their marathon they are experienced racers and these kids adore him.
So... I let him talk.
45 minutes later we headed off into the heat with recommendations for races he thought I should be running By then though it was hot and my legs were tight and stiff and Hobbes was panting. We managed to get a decent slow run in but not nearly the 8miles I had planned or the 12 on my training plan. We also met other friends (people and doggies) that wanted to visit. I really need to be up and out earlier and/or go a different route with less chance of encounters. The last mile we walked mostly because I had nothing left in my legs. I did my usual recovery routine and stretches and sat down to do my update here. I was falling asleep in my chair so figured I would snuggle with Hobbes for a few minutes then get in the shower. Ha! Slept for over 2 hours! Apparently I was very tired!
Taking a rest day tomorrow and will get my long run in on Monday.

Turned around after 0.8 km to run home, pee, and switch shoes. I think my older pair of Kayanos are done. Can't complain, they've got a ton of km on them.
Anyway, rest of my run was good. Appallingly windy but not too hot as a consequence. I cramped up badly at 14.2/14.4km but I gutted it out until 14.4 and then walked home.

I think I only complained about the cold twice last winter, but only because my feet got soaked in slushy icy snow. I’ll take a cold run over a hot one every day and twice on Sunday2 -
@shanaber he sounds like an awesome person to chat with.1
-
Hi, this is all new to me so I’m going to start with a modest 20 km for this month. Will see how it goes from there.10
-
@LaDispute57 - that snowy trail looks pretty damned inviting about now!
@Elise4270 - made me laugh with the description of your encounter with the twins!
On the knee question... torn meniscus? I would definitely get in and get it checked out on Monday. I have nothing on things to watch... my DH is bing watching the decade shows on CNN. I think he is in the 1990s now. Oh and I'm in for emotional support person and I will bring Hobbes the Vizsla as the emotional support animal
@avidkeo - nice work on that 10k!
@KeepRunningFatboy - last year when I was having so many issues with my heart feeling like it was racing I went to the cardiologist and wore a monitor for a few days. They didn't find anything but he told me when it happens to stop and sit down, even if it means sitting in the dirt on the side of a trail, until it passes. I think the concern being that you might pass out. Ends up mine was caused by a nutritional issue but I still pay attention to it even though it doesn't happen often anymore unless I don't eat enough before I run.
@rheddmobile - you are right running does feel much better after you're done! Now I want fries too! But not with mayo! Sweet potato fries with ranch!!
@sarahthes - I don't know I think 12C might just be the perfect temp to start a run at. You will warm up fast and then it will feel so good!
@skippygirlsmom - congratulations on your race and to Skip for her AG win! She really is amazing! Also that is some hill! Glad you said something to those ladies at the aid station. I said something to some at the 5K Iran when they were walking 5 across and runners couldn't pass. WTH! I know they all have to learn but come on - it is simple logic and consideration for others.
@BruinsGal_91 - yay for the Sauconys! So glad there was no knee niggle or pain! Wish we had some of that greenness to run by! Everything here is so brown now. Even some of the trees on the trail look like they are starting to die
@mobycarp - glad you were able to finish the race even walking when you needed to and that you are feeling back to normal!
@weat0043 - hope your foot, ankle knee issues get resolved soon! Take care!
So I am now trying to find ways to fit fries with Mac and cheese (for National Mac and Cheese Day) and Ice Cream (for National Ice Cream Day) into my dinner menu for tonight7
