Volunteered for our local track club last night at the Crazy 8s expo which is an 8k that starts at 8:58 tonight. Tons of people run but it’s too crowded for me plus I’m not much of a night runner. I got to see and talk to (well I smiled and said hi so I’m counting that) some of the Kenyans last night. One of them or someone from Eithopia will most likely win.
This morning I hit the trail to run the route again for Tuesday nights 7 mile race. Mile 3 is all uphill. I try to power walk but even that is challenging. I’m a little worried about making the cut off time but I feel a little more confident after today.
Congratulations to everyone that raced today!7 -
Today's run was a bust. I ended up walking a large portion of it because I ate too close to when I went out. I know better, but still did it.

My daughter had an outdoor swim meet today. She did great and it was a nice change from the indoor meets, but it was super hot out today. It was 90F or so outside, so tried to stay in the shade as much as possible. Once we got home it was hard to get up the motivation to get a run in. After putting it off for hours and my husband deciding it to go for it, I finally got ready and left the house a little after 10pm. It was muggy out, but it was decent. First mile was slow, but picked up the pace towards the end. It was a close one, but made my goal of at least 3 runs for this week,
7/9 - 3 miles
7/10 - 1.35 mile walk
7/11 - 3 miles
7/12 - 2 mile walk
7/13 - rest
7/14 - 3 miles
Total 9 miles run, 3 of at least 3 runs this week8 -
I woke up around ten this morning feeling the effects of a late night and too much cider, so I spent the rest of the day in bed reading and napping, half thinking I might go for a run in the evening if I felt better. I woke up from my second nap around quarter to eight and felt better, so out I went.
The route I’d planned was 5.9 miles, but there was a turnoff to a 3.1 mile route a little after the first mile. I was a little concerned about the weather - 86 degrees, dew point in the mid 60s - but I figured I’d be out of the sun at least and if I only felt up for 3.1 miles that was still freaking badass.
Turns out I’ve definitely been running too fast - I kept to a slower pace than I’ve been running the last few weeks, and even though I started doing my teapot impression after a half a mile or so, I fell into a groove pretty early on and didn’t end up needing to walk at all. Which was good, because the couple of times I had to stop I was immediately swarmed by mosquitos. Blech.
The route was absolutely gorgeous, to the point I was sorry I didn’t have a camera with me. I was a little worried about a portion that followed some train tracks but I shouldn’t have been - it turns out that area is also part of a prairie reclamation project and full of wildflowers. A few parts of the route got pretty dark and wooded, to the point that I thought I might have accidentally started jogging, but as I neither found nor became a corpse, I dodged that bullet.
I did miss a turnoff that added about .4 miles to my route, but that’s okay because it meant that I ran my very first ever 10K! So no speed PRs this week but two distance ones: longest single run and most miles in a week. I will take it!

So, I tried something different today, went and listened to some live music outside, and had running stuff in my car, so when it finally became a reasonable temperature out, I could go for a run.
I didn’t go as far as I thought I would, listening to the music first meant I had to pee sooner into the run than I expected...and some of the route I picked was more sketch than I thought it would be in the dark, and like @MegaMooseEsq - I was a bit concerned I would inadvertently turn my run into jog.
Also, being alone as an introvert in rural areas as often as I am... I have a fairly strong attachment to keeping on the correct side of my “if I fell and broke my leg, when would someone miss me next?” Equation. And although my insomnia runs don’t do real good things for that equation... I realized while in the sketch and unsidewalked bit of my run that I may have stretched my math a bit far.
3 today Which is not as far as I needed to go, but farther than I wanted to go.

@HonuNui - I am so sorry about poor Lily but so glad she is ok. Looks like it is going to be a bit of a recovery for her until she can be out and romping about again!
Reading about your night time runs just amazes me @hanlonsk and @MegaMooseEsq. I know @sarahthes also goes out late too but I could not even imagine heading out for a walk so late at night let alone a run. I guess it comes from living too long in an urban area. Do you all have to worry about critters coming after you in the dark? Even here we have coyotes out on the streets at night.4 -
I went for a run to tire myself out and yet it’s almost 1:30 and I’m wide awake. On another note if my last mile went into today can I count that as running 2 days in a row lol. I had more I wanted to say but I’ve been on my phone for 15 minutes already and I’ve deleted what I typed about 5 times now. Clearly I’m over my phone. Lol

Oh no @HonuNui - poor Lily! She must be very brave though to take on a boar.
I'm about to head out for a steamy run this morning, so I wish I had done it at midnight (like your thinking @abutcher2122 on two days in a row ). Although that probably would have been more humid.1 -
@HonuNui Ack! I must have missed the post where you mentioned her getting attacked! So glad she looks like she will be fine now!0

Friday was a busy work day, and yesterday apparently my friend was praying for rain so she could get out of running with me and there was indeed a downpour. So I slept in, planning to get up later and run by myself. It was hard getting myself out the door, and then my husband suggested we take the kids & bikes to the reservoir. The whole way around is the exact distance I wanted for the day, so I left my bike at home and ran with my favorite little "rabbit" on his bike. The first 10k with him were a real struggle for me, leaving me very much in doubt about tomorrow evening's 5k race and wanting to get a good-for-me time. It was raining, which was fine with me. There was also the incident where we stopped so I could use a portapotty and discovered that there was a couple making out inside. I have no words.
Then we met up with my husband and daughter, who had gone the other way, and had decided to stop at a restaurant along the water "for coffee and tea" and we ended up eating a regular meal. Then I went with my daughter as the rabbit and had no problem running the additional 3.5k back to the car at a faster pace than I had run any of the previous 10. It was almost goal 5k pace, and felt fine! I need to figure out how to replicate that. Long, slow warmup, followed by a snack break, and then take off like a crazy person? Haha.
Today is also a rest day, and tomorrow night my race calendar will be empty. I'm working on it, though!
I met my weekly distance goal, and am right on track for the monthly goal as well
Upcoming race:
7/16 City Trail OnTour 5k11 -
@PastorVincent you need to skip church and do this. On that weekend my training schedule calls for 20 miles on Saturday and 14 on Sunday... I am thinking about doing the 25k distance as my Sunday run. Think about it.

Knee update.
95% of the swelling is gone. No pain or instability. I still had BBQ yesterday. Nice of dh to go run without me and bring me home too much to eat when all i did was lay on the couch
Afrer church today, I'm going to decide if i should/could/would do a short run and or bike..
Fingers crossed this was all some sort of short lived mysterious injury that never happens again.
Thanks for all the well wishes. Keep 'em comin'. They must be magic! (Throw in a thought or two on the lottery)10 -
@HonuNui Wow! Glad Lily is okay! We have boar here too. They are a nuisance. Occasionally we'll have helicopters fly around and shoot them. Heck of a job to have there.
I've only come across the once or twice our on a run or bike. And never since weve moved.
Did that pig get taken care of (maybe roasted up for doggies treats? Brave dog lilly!1 -

We'll just call this a recovery run. Slow and steady was all I could manage after yesterday's long run, and the humidity was oppressive. Fortunately lots of good stories with friends to keep us going.
