Hey all. Well I got my second goal, did 8k this morning to bring my total for the month to 130!! When I started I thought 90 was going to be a stretch! I officially have the bug and it's all your fault. Yes, you!12

Should be easy... if I can just get a time machine to create enough hours in the day to pull that off with out missing work/etc!
@PastorVincent We just need @AlphaHowls and @JessicaMcB to run some virtual miles for us.
I need 52km so 2 - 26km.

We actually bring pickles to XC/T&F meet because it stops muscle cramping. Right now I have a HUGE jar of dill pickles in my refrigerator. Skip got a really bad cramp one time and drank some of the juice out of the jar and in a short time the cramp was completely gone. Mustard does the same thing, she tried that once, she hates mustard and after about 5 minutes thew it up, but the cramp was gone.1 -

Many people speak to the power of pickle juice as a recovery drink. It has a high concentration of salt which is probably why. I mean it is essentially drinking flavored salt water

Didn’t get to run yesterday in NY. A shame since the weather was beautiful for running... instead I ate breakfast on my in-laws deck and relaxed all morning. I’m not too upset 🙂
Today we drove 10.5 hours home and after unpacking I headed out for an easy 4 miles. It was sprinkling when I headed out and raining by the time I finished. Shortly after coming inside it started raining buckets! Glad I finished when I did! The rain definitely made the run feel cooler even though it was humid.

July is all done and I'm nearly 20 percent over my goal which I'm very pleased with. August will be a much quieter month as I have a half on the 25th so will be tapering for a couple of weeks prior, and the week prior to that (next week) I'll be sunning myself in Fiji and will only run if I damn well feel like it!!

So, I seem to have broken through some kind of threshold. After Saturday's trail run being unexpectedly fast, I decided to try running today's 5k on roads at close to race pace, just to check my progress and see what I could do. And we ran it in 27:13! Which is an 8:46 average pace! That's more than a minute off my previous PR and my first sub 30 5k after being injured in March. So, you know... wow! Where the heck did that come from? Our fast finish for the last tenth clocked in at a six minute pace! And it's not like we were sprinting, just pushing harder. I didn't know I could run a six minute pace for any distance at all!
It's not like it was cool, either - temps in the upper 80's with dewpoint 72. And I feel fine now, legs don't feel beat up like they usually do after speed work. Just hoping this is the new normal.
19 -
So, I had time lined up for tonight. All weather sites agreed it be a good night for a run. No rain, low (for summer) temps, and all that. I had some time-sensitive paperwork to do, so I finished that up, clicked send and then almost at the same time this happened:
Ugh. And it is still getting harder.9 -

I like the shirt idea! I'm still quite a few miles away from half marathon distance, but I suspect it might be a good distance for me. A half in every state sounds like a fun goal!
There is a 50 states marathon club and I'm pretty sure there is a 50 states half marathon club too. I'm thinking about joining the 50 states marathon club at some point since distances beyond marathon still count. So a 50K, for example, still counts as a marathon as long as the other rules are followed (it has to have 10 finishers, has to be published, etc.).
Yes - Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics are the names of the groups. I have friends that have completed to the 50 state marathons or are working on it. I looked into half fanatics but you have to meet certain criteria like doing 3 halfs within 90 days or something and I haven't done that yet. Not sure I'm really interested in all their rules of membership. I think it's fun to add new states but I'm not going to make it a goal.

Treadmill today due to a few sprinkles that I wasn't sure were going to turn into more or not. As usual I was a bit short on time before my circuit training class, so had to stop before getting 4 miles even. Not much to report on with that. Looks like I'll exceed my goal by about 10% for the month.6 -
In addition to the Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics, there is also a 50 state marathon club. I’m a member with 26 states completed and 24 to go.

No, you're right. That's the 50 state one. I was confusing it with the Marathon Maniacs because I hear my friend talk about them both, I conflated them I guess. The maniacs and fanatics are just about doing a lot of marathons/halfs, not necessarily the 50 states. Sorry!0 -

Woo! Even with all my missed runs I should still make goal tomorrow!
Nothing much to report. Today's run was blah. I was tired, hot and legs were dead.6 -
That was a bust/fail. I was out of town today so didn't realize that we had a microburst rain storm pass through the North end. Put on my Trail shoes and tried to go for a run, the definition of a super slider is how the trails/hills were. The mosquitoes were out in full force and since I couldn't get any pace going in the mud wallows it didn't take long for the hoards to build, then I hit the super steep hill at 0.75 km and couldn't climb it - 1 ft forward 3 ft sliding back. Called it done and wallowed home for a huge distance - 1.5km mud wallow.
12 -
Worked 13 hours today unexpectedly, so no run. Hoping to get my last 2.55 in tomorrow night.

Today was not a great day. However, I made the best of it.
I found out that the place I am supposed to do my next clinical rotation dropped me through the cracks and now I have to scramble to find another site by the deadline. Otherwise I have to sit out of my program for two months. Argh.
I also discovered that even though I went part time at my job (that I have resigned from and taken another) they are still taking insurance out of my check even though I am not even eligible for it. Nice.
On a more pleasant note, I was scheduled for a five mile run today. I decided to run until I wasn't mad anymore. So I ran six miles. Made up one of the miles out of the two I missed yesterday! I was still mad, but much less so.
I also tried a new flavor of the GU energy gels: salted watermelon. It was smooth, went down easy, and no tummy issues. It also worked as my last two miles were the fastest and I took it at mile 3.
I am a SLOW runner. Sign me up for that turtle team.

Here's my race report for the San Francisco 2nd HM. Sorry it is so long!
We drove up to SF on Thursday so we could get together with friends on Thursday and Friday evenings and be there when our daughter flew in from Seattle to run with me. I did a little shake out run on Friday that I already posted here earlier so won’t revisit at this point. Saturday the whole family headed into downtown SF for the expo because it is really big with lots of vendors and samples and just cool things to look at.Then my husband dropped us off at the hotel and we headed out to just walk around and get some dinner. Walking along the embarcadero we discovered a Ben and Jerry’s Carnival (What!?!) with free ice cream and fun silly games. Of course, we had to check it out! Then we just kept walking and talking and looking in shops and eventually found a place for dinner that wasn’t packed and then headed back to the hotel. For the day we had a total of 8 miles of walking!
The GG bridge from Fort Mason
The Bay Bridge on our walk back to the hotel We got to bed fairly early after laying everything out for the morning. Last bus to the start line was at 5:45 so we needed to be down stairs by 5:30.
Up and out in the morning and it was so cold – mid 50’s, windy and a little misty. We were with a bunch of other runners and right away realized we couldn’t find the buses. They should have been right across the street from the hotel but weren’t where everyone thought they should be… so many runners wandering around getting close to panic but once we found them they were waiting and ready to go. We got to the start area in Golden Gate park with plenty of time. We were trying to keep warm and the mist was becoming more like rain. We hung out in our corral but were so far back we really couldn’t hear what the announcers were saying and next thing we knew we were heading off.
My daughter, who I knew was going to be faster than me this year but vowed we would run it together, took off like a shot. After the 1st mile I told her there was no way I could maintain that pace but she was so excited that the race started with a downhill… I slowed down and let her pull ahead of me. I saw her once again around mile 3 where there was a little switchback at which point I just told her to ‘go, go, go’. Around mile 5 I realized my stomach was getting upset so I reverted to a run/walk and hoped for a porta potty. I kept thinking once we got out of the park and onto the streets surely there would be some, but nope. By mile 6 you have completed the major hills of this course and it is mainly downhill or flat and I was having fun running down but still looking for a bathroom. There were many construction ones but they were all locked and there was nothing until the beginning of mile 9. By then it was mostly too late and I wasted way too much time there (sorry TMI). The good news is when I started running again I felt great! I enjoyed all the wonderful people in the neighborhoods who came out to cheer for us and brought out grapes, oranges, watermelon and even beer and mimosas. I only had a couple of refreshing orange slices but was so grateful for those! The 2nd HM course map with elevations.
All the way along I did feel bad for the marathon runners who were competing for space with all of us. Especially early on when the leaders were coming through (so fast!) and so many clueless HM runners were all over the road and not keeping to the right, often stopping to walk right in the path that the marathon runners were in. It had to be so frustrating for them. I also saw at least 3 collapse near the end of the race with probably a mile or less to go. One was loaded into an ambulance and looked completely unresponsive (yikes!)
I finally found my daughter at the finish line where she was waiting for me. She had finished about 10 mins before me after ‘dying at mile 10’. She had run her best HM time ever though – taking off 50 mins from her previous best! Note she hadn’t run any training run longer than 8-9 miles and had basically stopped running a couple of weeks prior to the race but was still doing her indoor cycling. She was thrilled with her race but really doesn’t like HMs much preferring to run 10ks. However, looking at her race photos she has the biggest smile in every single one! Me, I look like I am dying in every single one!Our finish line selfie
We walked the post race festival and listened to the awards, picked up my challenge medal and loyalty prize. Then after we showered and relaxed a bit we headed out for huge delicious burgers and put her on a plane back to Seattle. Unfortunately, our drive home ended up being really long – almost 8 hours with traffic and construction delays. I am convinced this contributed greatly to how stiff and sore I am. I have had sore legs/sore quads before but this has definitely been the worst.20 -

@shanaber congrats for you and your daughter for finishing the SF HM. That is outrageous that there wasn't a port-a-potty until mile 9!! That has to be a rules violation or something. Your daughter's PR by 50 minutes in a HM is crazy good!!!
@rheddmobile that is some fantastic progress. I hope you keep feeling great and that speed is your new normal!
This morning would have been a great day to run, low 70's and low humidity. But somehow I got in the middle of an ant hill this past weekend, and I have dozens of ant bites on the top, bottom, in between my toes and it actually hurts to walk. So I am taking the last day of July off. But happy with my consistency of running every other day in July, beating my distance goal with 116 miles (36 miles over goal, matching my PR for monthly miles). Will take this extra rest day, and look forward to tomorrow (August already?!!). Tomorrow morning it is supposed to be even cooler than today with temps below 70F! I can't remember last time it did that. But I know it won't last long, so want to take advantage of that.
See you all in the August Challenge!8 -
@shanaber Awesome race report, bad luck on the portojohn search! At the 9th mile ?!? What were they thinking. Way to go for your daughter on her new PR as well!💪👟
Circuit training with PT today, she killed arms and shoulders. Half mile on the dreadmill this morning as a warmup. 47.1 endomondo and 6.7 dreadmill miles for total 53.8/50 for July. See y'all in next month's challenge.3 -
great race report on the SF 2 HM @shanaber. Sorry there was no portapotty, if it makes you feel better there were NONE at all during the marathon trail race.....I guess that's what trees are for...........
