Running is boring and pointless

Being nice is good, but being honest is better. There isn't an obesity epidemic because people don't run enough, it's almost exclusively a consequence of carbohydrate addiction and subsequent hormonal dysfunction that also leads to the epidemic of mental disorders like depression and anxiety. Running is a band-aid solution that doesn't even work.
The only thing worse than continuing to dig yourself into a hole is hitting yourself in the head with the shovel. But’s it’s entertaining. Please proceed...11 -

Late to the party, but...
I find it extremely offensive when someone looks at people doing cardio (or any other exercise) and makes assumptions about their motives and mindset.
Lean person walking slowly on treadmill - Warming up? Injury recovery? Rest day?
Overweight person walking slowly on treadmill - Lazy? Thinks they can go home and eat all the things?
It just pisses me off.24 -
Wish I could "run" again. Had a hip replacement 6 months ago and the best I can do is jog (5-6mph) for 20 minutes at a time now. That said...I have cut my carbs drastically and lost some decent amount of weight. Not a doctor or self-proclaimed diet expert, but I think there may be something behind cutting carbs. Somehow I cut carbs, raised my calories, and weight dropped. No clue the science or reasoning behind it, but it happened.7

@dollarbill181 - Your weight dropped once or consistently over a period of many weeks? Lower your carbs and you lose water (and glycogen) - something runners DO NOT want to do. This equals instance weight loss (like frickin' magic). This is a one time thing. To continue losing you have to eat less than you burn. That is a fact whether you believe it or not (nods to Dr. Tyson ). It has nothing to do with carbs after the initial loss.6

Nov 2017 I found out i'd need surgery. weighted 225lbs.
Started cutting carbs and exercising more and dropped to 205lbs by February 2018.
Don't exercise as much as I use to (only once or twice a week now) and am now down to 183lbs.
Muscle mass stayed. No doubt I dropped a lot of water weight, vascularity w/ the new diet is through the roof.

Not necessarily, I cut carbs but raised the amount of calories. After the surgery exercise was nearly non existent except for PT. High protein, high fats, low carbs. Weight went down, muscle stayed. Only started running and weight lifting again about 2 weeks ago.
Not saying there wasn't a deficit all along, just saw quicker results by watching carbs.0 -
It's really simple. People get fat because they eat too many carbs and then try to fix their weight problem by running for hours on treadmills. No one's angry, Capiche?
People get fat because they eat too many calories. Are carbs part of it? Sure. But they aren't the only/sole reason. If someone who is getting fat replaces 50g of carbs with 50g of fats, they will actually get fatter. Your cut carbs and eat more fat doesn't work.
I have experimented a lot with different diets and i can assure you that 50g of fat and 50g of carbs are not the same thing. 50g of carbs will have you craving more. 50g of fat will not.
Sorry, but I never found fat very satiating. For me, it's a mix of protein and carbs*.
*Not to be construed as advocating a low-fat diet. I watch my fat a bit because of the 9 calories/gram vs 4/gram on protein and carbs. So, I don't free-pour my olive oil when sauteeing; I use a moderate amount. But at the end of the day, I'm seeking to restrict calories. I focus on hitting protein and iron and let the rest fall where it falls.1 -

The closest I could get is to try and drink 2L of soda. I might be able to do that in 60 seconds.1 -

YES. THIS. I was just getting mad at people looking at my exercise and judging me for it. Posted about it, guess what, got more people being ignorant about it.
I'm happy to see overweight people doing whatever at the gym. THEY'RE AT THE GYM. Literally making an effort. What more do these people want?!7 -
I don't know why this popped up on my feed today or why I thought of this thread. Enjoy.

I live in Vegas so running outside is just not a reality along with spending 7 years being airborne in the army my knees just can’t support that sort of impact any more. Although I don’t think it’s pointless I do think its super boring. When I get on the elliptical at the gym I have to have my phone with me or I’ll die of boredom. I do know that some gyms actually have elliptical and treadmills in a theater room to watch movies while you work out to. Another way to combat the boredom is to incorporate some sort of HIIT session. My trainer has me do my cardio in between my strength training so that I’m doing like 3-5 minutes of cardio at a time for cool down instead of spending 30 minutes. If I feel like doing more after strength training then I’ll whip out my phone and watch a movie or YouTube and it makes the time fly by. Hope that helps.
Why do so many equate running with boring machines in a gym? If that's all I had I would have quit years ago. The weather has to be so bad that ducks are running for cover for me to use one of those machines.
There's also evidence that running is good for your knees. I get it if it is not your thing. But general statements like the gullible troll who started this are not helpful either. Just because he can't handle running doesn't make it bad for everyone.
ETA - I didn't address the fad diet nonsense in his post but you can probably guess what I think of it.
First of all, I think it's interesting because a lot of long distance runners are incredibly lean and eat high carbohydrate diets to fuel their workouts.
Did it ever occur to people that different people like different things and like different approaches to get to different goals?
Maybe the people on the treadmill are just trying to build up endurance so they can do other fitness activities. I know a lot of people that are in the pool for that reason. It's not that they love swimming, it's that's what they can do at that level.
A lot of fat people do not want to be harassed outside when running. They literally get yelled at "lose some weight," when they are out running. LIKE UH, WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY ARE TRYING TO DO, AT THAT VERY MOMENT?"
Then you get people like me, who is maybe on the more extreme end of it, and you get, look, she's hanging upside down in a split, she's SUCH AN ATTENTION SEEKER!!!
I go to the weight room and get judged because they think I need to be on the treadmill. I actually like a more muscular look for myself.
Not every prescription for every body. I think the best exercise to do is the one you enjoy and will keep doing. Ditto for the diet.
My 2 cents on the topic.

it wouldn't be rage eating, though... it would be out of addiction. Carbs, especially artificial carbs, are basically heroin.
TBH if its salted caramel GU, then i would have to agree
That is my go-to as well!
I'm training for my next HM and have been trying to figure out my preferred method of fueling. Just ordered an 8-pack of salted caramel GUs to give them a shot based on this exchange.
Rejoice. The troll thread has provided benefit!
its just like eating caramel sauce. my only criticism is that they are a bit sticky so they need washing down with water when its warm. i tried the SIS gels, and the 'clean mouth technology' that they advertise really is a thing! but the GU is too yummy...
The Gu caramel gels do lave a less than enjoyable texture in my mouth, in a similar but much more tolerable way that honey does (I don't eat Honey Stinger gels for that reason). That said, I do like a lot of their flavors. I need to try SIS gels but I'm leery about buying an entire package online to find out that I don't like them. I don't know that any stores where I live cary them so I can't do my usual "buy a few and see if I like them" routine.0 -

Maybe try contacting the manufacturer to see if they will send you a sample. Not saying they will, but they might.0 -

That's actually not a bad idea, or at least asking if they have any local retailers (I know the bike stores don't sell their stuff but maybe some of the running stores do).0 -

Hahahahaha; thanks for the laugh!
OP, you make a huge assumption—that most are running, and (you imply) doing nothing else, to lose weight.
People run for so many reasons, and not one of them is “pointless.” Any exercise regime employed to lose weight, without significant attention to diet, will fail. But, even without losing weight, a runner/jogger is healthier than the person doing nothing.
Furthermore, increasing activity by jogging maybe someone’s first venture into honing control of their weight and improving their health. They may not have much knowledge when they begin, but jogging might be their wedge into learning more. They’ll find out how important diet is for weight loss. Maybe they’ll quit running and take up strength training. That does not make their initial steps pointless at all; it makes them the first steps in a journey.
Maybe lighten up and let others find their way.

Isn't the point of running so you can eat carbs?4

I know this is a troll thread, but I'll confess I always basically thought running was boring and hard and pointless, and then I did it on a trail and felt like I was a child again. Free, fast, joyful, moving fluidly over obstacles, it was great! You should go out on a lonesome trail and see if you enjoy it, I didn't think I would.
Edit to add: I wasn't fast in the pace on my Garmin sense, but the trees were moving by real quick and giving me the feeling of being fast.10
