What nobody tells you about losing weight

This. Bugs. Me. So. Much. I had to endure a bunch of that being refitted for my wedding dress. Everyone around me, overweight (not judging just saying) telling me to stop, that I'm losing all my good bits, that the dress looked better before. And no I'm not anorexic, I was barely at the BMI and etc where I'm not literally considered obese by my DOCTOR. It took a lot for me to face them and say- well I'm going to keep going so...guess I'll just have to be horribly healthy for my own wedding.
I get this too. In my case, I wonder if some of it isn't that at some stages of weight loss I do look a bit worse. I go from plump to melted candle. Then things seem to tighten up a bit. Then melted candle again. I'd still rather be fit and healthy though.9 -
Nobody told me that I would be sick of dieting and would not want to repeat the event unless necessary! Also nobody told me that I would gain my weight back and more and would have to lose it again although with confidence knowing that I had done it before and now want to keep it off for good.23

I lost "the hump" on the back of my neck - you guys know what I'm talking about?
I totally know this!!!! I've only lost 20 pounds so far, but mine has decreased quite a bit. I still have about 32 pounds to go so I'm hoping it goes away completely by the time I get there. That hump is the reason I keep longer hair and only wear a ponytail with certain shirts that hide it.8 -
That the habits of mind would carry over into other areas of life— consistent small steps towards a goal; progress not perfection; taking the long view; persisting despite setbacks; the importance of community, both giving and getting support; celebrating milestones; having faith in a process even if it’s not always obvious that it’s working; patience; letting go of drama; not taking myself so seriously; paying attention to what I’m doing and why and what its consequence is likely to be in the long run; willingness to change and to actually take a concrete step towards that change, every day.36

That its harder to balance food on your lap while driving! I used to have a nice wide leg surface lol but now things easily fall off to the side.23

That my “new” body is nothing like my old body at the same weight 15yrs ago. I have lost 40lbs and have no idea how to dress this new size or what styles would compliment me and am almost hesitant to shop because it hasn’t sunk in that this is me now.
I don’t recognize myself, I look down at my wrists and am surprised at the bone sticking out ....numerous times daily!
I still automatically suck my stomach in when the camera comes out and readjust my pants so my fat isn’t hanging over only to realize that the fat is no longer there.
These are all wonderful things but I still feel like this body isn’t mine.
People don’t recognize me. I though this would be a wonderful nsv but it’s happened a few times and it’s just really akward, you say” hi how’s it going” and they look at you like who is this crazy person talking to me or the uncomfortable conversation when they do figure it out and you have to talk about how much weight you’ve lost.
I really do like myself so much more this way, more energy is my favourite bonus so hopefully my mind will catch up soon so I can own this new body34 -
Others have said this I know, but I am surprised at how embarrassed I get when people comment on how 'slim I am now (I don't think I am yet!). I never know what to say. I usually just mutter something like 'thankyou' but often that seems inadequate but I hate discussing how, why and what.
Eta: Mind you, I am secretly miffed if anyone doesn't appear to notice. No pleasing me apparently! 😂47 -
Nobody told me that caffeine would affect me differently at a lower weight. I used to be able to drink coffee or pop after supper and get to sleep just fine. Now, not so much.18

Discovered this weekend that I had to re-learn how to whistle! Seems like such a silly thing, but I couldn't get my lips to "fit" the way they used to when I weighed more. So strange!21
-
Wow.... When I was heavier I couldn't whistle, I thought maybe it was age or dental changes. I read your post, tried to whistle and I was able to whistle. It wasn't loud, but I could hold a note. I wouldn't have thought my chubby little cheeks was the cause.10

I never thought about this being the cause; I seem to have also lost that ability. Not that I was ever very good at it.5 -
I am cracking up because I can picture several MFP users reading @emcclure013 's post and trying to whistle.27

This one made my day. Realizing my laptop can actually sit in my lap... Hey, wait a second! I have a lap now!17

That's on par with texting while driving or worse. Reaching for a moving object (that food falling off your leg) is one of the top causes of fatal crashes.16 -
The loose skin! I went for my annual mammogram and the technician had to keep tucking my upper/lower underarm skin up out of the way. It was almost comical (and a little embarrassing) but I’m hoping that this is just part of the “worse before it looks better”. Yikes.
On the upside, she did make a special note of my 37 pound weight loss on my chart.23 -
That even after losing a significant amount sometimes the clothes off the rack still won’t fit. I’ve had several « seriously, I lost 60lbs and still don’t fit into this? This is brutal »
But then sometimes I look at things that are tiny but they fit well, so I suppose it goes both ways!16 -

When I first lost a bunch, I had the same problem of having no clue how to dress myself. Someone recommended that I go shopping at a nicer department store and ask for assistance. They have no idea what you used to look like, only what you look like now. The sales lady picked out about 5 outfits that would compliment my new body (I didn't buy them all), and ending up getting a lovely wrap dress that suited my new figure very well, and I got the added benefit of seeing other styles on me that look good.21 -
I recently had a tummy-tuck to remove the flap of skin on my belly. Finally out of my post surgical compression contraption. Had a mild freakout because I noticed two large bumps on my sides that were getting bruised by the compression gear... My doctor had a strange look on his face, and I was upset because I couldn't figure out why he was so calm when something "was wrong". His reply: "Those bumps, that's your pelvic bone. Those are your hips.". .....I no longer have a layer of fat hiding & protecting some of my bones. That would also explain why laying flat on my back on a hard surface has become a bit uncomfortable.32

@KevannC
Hahahaha, yep. Also: WARNING!!! Do not try to catch anything falling on your lap by slamming your legs together (I learned this on the hard way). Without all the thigh fat...knees hit first. I bruised the inside of both of my knees trying to catch a single chip.18 -
My cat likes to knead me as I fall asleep. I was used to it, however now there is less cushion it is starting to bother me. There is still a few soft areas, but when he pushes down I can no longer ignore it.14

We used to joke around it wasn't dinner unless I spilled something on myself. Now it's turned into it's not dinner if I haven't burned myself cooking. Luckily they're all very minor burns.11

I have mentioned this before but the number of 'bumps' and 'dents' you will find on yourself is shocking.
I have bumps under my breasts that are now visible when I reach upwards (aka, they freaked me out when I was changing a bulb yesterday - till I realised they were ribs!).
Then lying curled on my side there is a new 'dent' around the hip area.
Awesome to find, but I have ZERO basis for what 'normal' is anymore haha20 -

It's weird - I am proud of how I look but I get a little self conscious about how my arms look flexed. They are obviously muscular but the dent at the elbow and "trough" down the forearm looks a little odd.5 -
Celebrating 10 lb weight loss (217 to 207) with a Morning Walk. Im 90 minutes early to work. I will walk untill punch in time. Better than celebratory meal. 10 lb loss is plenty of motivation to keep fast untill noon31

I developed a dent on one side of my face from hollowing. At least it could do it evenly on both sides, but no.13 -
You no longer have to tie your shoelaces on the side.37

That I don't need to suck in when I have my photo taken! Also, how painful/uncomfortable it is to sit without the extra padding.19

How much more important making sure the toilet seat is down now! Never had to worry about falling in before. I'll give everyone 2 guesses on how I found this out this morning.41

Along the same lines -- Sitting closer to the edge, because even the middle of the seat can be a butt-trap for dunking. XD9
