This morning it was a nice 65 degrees at 5:00 am. Perfect for hill repeats (said no one ever). Actually, the weather was really nice. The hills, not so much!
I was on vacation last week and finally got caught up reading all the posts. Way too many for me to respond to – sorry! My mom and I drove to Illinois and Iowa to visit family. I love running in different places. I would start out in my cousin’s subdivision surrounded by streets of houses but soon I would make my way into the adjacent farmland.

MegaMooseEsq wrote: »Pretty grumpy this morning, which wasn't that unusual, but it never really shook off once I started running. Nothing really specific, just higher anxiety than I’d prefer. Having an anxiety disorder means that sometimes trying to identify what I'm anxious about makes things worse, as I immediately become anxious about every possibility my brain raises. In those cases it's better just to ride it out and look back when my brain isn't trying to eat itself alive. I've started journaling recently and that seems to be helping.
My knee was hurting, too, which has been frustrating me a lot recently. Running and lifting are supposed to be GOOD for me, so what’s with these aches and pains? I know it’s more complicated than that, but it’s still frustrating. I know that I need to accept that I'm going to need to take care of my body if I'm going to push it to do things like run around lakes and deadlift 100 pounds (on deck for tomorrow!) and there are going to be aches and pains no matter what, but I'm just not there yet.
I feel this so hard. I’ve started bullet journaling and habit tracking so I have finite evidence of trends and it makes it easier to see patterns. It’s usually a lot of “oh duh” moments for me. The days I get up, have a smoothie, and go for a walk outside I have fewer episodes of anxiety? The days that my morning routine gets pushed aside I have worse anxiety? But I’m also a nerd and like evidence so that’s just me.
Also feel ya on the aches and pains. My left hip is bugging me, might be an IT band thing, but I have no foam roller. I used one of the tiny human’s rattles because it was the hardest ball I could find and that seems to be working. Just frustrating when I’m doing all the *right* things and my body says “haha no.”3 -
@5BeautifulDays did you find proper shoes was enough for you? I did a lot of massage on it yesterday and that's made a huge difference. Still not running today as still a little pain, though not like yesterday. It's the best it's been since last Wednesday.
Sorry all to be a broken record, I just want to get out there again!1 -
Blah. That's pretty much how I'm feeling and what my running has been like. It was ridiculously hot towards the end of last week and really smoky. How many times I ran all weekend: 0. How far I should have gone: 10-12 mile long run. I have a half marathon on Sunday. Thankfully I did get in a 10-mile run a few weeks ago but now I'm feeling really under-prepared.
Oh well. It is what it is. I woke up yesterday and it was fall so I'm running home from work (3.5 miles) today and probably tomorrow & Wednesday as well, then short shakeout runs Friday and maybe Saturday (1-2 miles).
I have been feeling vaguely crampy and ill with digestive stuff which hasn't helped my mojo. Due to eating my anxiety and hormones. Maybe I can run off some anxiety tonight.
Anxiety seems to be a combo of work stress and life stress as we are starting to talk about moving but we have SO much to do with our condo before we can list it. Paint, carpets, some electrical, and getting rid of a ton of accumulated STUFF. Gah. Jitters.8 -
Well my regular running buddy is out of town and I don't really know the other girl who came and ran with us twice... so figured I'd let it up to her to call me if she wants to run. She must really want to, because she just called. That means I need to go to bed NOW so I can get up early. I did do some housework today, and the quad feels great, so hopefully will be okay running slowly with her and then I'll decide if I want to go further.
Oh and to answer the previous question that I never got around to about if running ever gets easier:
I've been running over 2 years now, and it did not start to get fun until sometime during the third month. It's not always fun now, and the first 15-30 minutes are frequently harder, but I do have a lot of great moments running. I recommend committing to sticking with it at LEAST the whole way through an 8-week C25K-type program, before someone decides they really hate running. And by then you might be addicted enough to keep running, even if you still hate it.10 -

That really sums it up! Ill be lacing up my shoes at 5:30am going why am I doing this, this is awful, I want to be in bed. Then I get out there and I feel fantastic and I look forward to my next run. Definitely an addiction! Gotta love that dopamine. Hmmm that explains the binges I'm having at the moment. no running, so need to get my dopamine hit from chocolate. Need to correct that action!
ETA New Balance are amazing! I am outside of their 30 day no question return policy by a week, but I called and asked anyway and they are going to refund my on the shoes! Just brilliant!7 -

Interval Monday! Workout was 2 mile warm up, then 12x 400 meter strides with alternating 30sec and 90 sec rests. Then a 2 mile cool down.
I ran to the high school track and did my strides on the track. I love it there! The track is so springy! The cross country team showed up to warm up on the track when I got there - such youngsters! To be that young again... they probably thought I was older than the hills - lol
I felt really good headed into my cool down. My strides were around 7:30 or better paces - I feel like the springy track contributed to how speedy I was Also, maybe my new Glycerin 16 sneakers. Those felt pretty good too. My hip complained just a little bit right at the end. We'll see on Friday when I attempt my longest run yet.

Start my 5-7k lunch walk. The sky turns dark. Someone mentions seeing lightning.
I check the weather again, now it says "rain starting in 8 mins"
Bah. Start walking back not liking the look of the black clouds. Bearly get inside when a BRIGHT bolt strikes with thunder almost at the same time. Loud enough to hear through closed doors and concrete walls.
*sigh*
Back to sitting at a desk and staring at a screen, I guess.
So lighting literally hit the building next to me and took out a bird. I know some of you nut cases will run in any weather... but this is a bit over the line for me!10 -

Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Swapped today's normal rest day for a rest day yesterday. It was a play it by ear sort of thing; after my 20 mile run Saturday morning, I went in for the 2nd of 2 Shingles vaccine shots. I'd had the first one on a Friday afternoon, tried to run 13 miles Saturday morning, and at 10 wondered if I could make it another mile back to base. then I needed naps most of that Saturday.
With that experience in mind, I got the second shot early Saturday afternoon. The idea was to see whether I was up to a gentle 5 miles by Sunday evening. Well, Sunday was much more pleasant than the day after the first shot; but I still felt myself needing naps from time to time. I probably could have managed 5 miles Sunday about 7 PM, but I didn't want to take the risk of feeling awful after 3 miles. So Sunday became a real rest day.
This morning, after 10 hours of sleep interrupted by a chill and a few light fevers, I felt pretty normal. Got out for a run just before lunch, went the planned 5 miles, and felt good. Temp was maybe 78º F; but the humidity was back up to normal summer levels after being blessedly low for Saturday's long run. That was okay for energy level, since I was only doing a short run; but I was soaked in sweat by the time I got home.
So the plan now is run 4 days in a row this week. Club practice tomorrow, and I might sign up for a low key trail race Wednesday evening if I feel up to it. I don't feel like I'm injured any more, and I think I survived the second shot of Shingles vaccine.
Getting old is not for sissies.

@mobycarp - my doc has recommended waiting a bit longer on the shingles vaccine. It is good to know your experience though so I will know what to expect!

@Avidkeo I've never had to rehab acute ptt while running--I just know that the right shoes keep the pains away and the wrong shoes give me all the warning signs. For me, I stopped being symptomatic as I lost weight and started doing leg weight training at the gym. (Which reminds me that I need to get back to weights...I've been trying to re-establish my running routine and haven't done any lifting at all). ETA: I've had other tendon issues while running and just in general. Lots of them, since I guess I'm just made that way. After a short period of rest/anti-inflammatories, I normally go back to using the limb gently and stop if I move out of "discomfort" into "pain."
@shanaber and @zdyb23456 The local high school CC teams all run at my lake trail from late July until November. This morning I just had to laugh because a big group of the younger ones (probably 9th graders from the looks of them) just *stopped* in the middle of the trail since they had run the distance the coach wanted. I'm all like "hey guys, excuse me...I know you're going to pass me in two seconds here, but I'd really like to keep moving!" and got a few to scooch out of the way. But normally, yes, they're very polite and sweet; they say "good morning, ma'am" and thank me when I hop to the side so they can barrel through like the beautiful wild herd of wildebeests they are, lol!5 -
This morning was a cool 75F, with a dew point of 72F, so it was humid but cool. Also, I knew rain was on the way, and sure enough by about mile 3 the heavens opened and it poured down. It. Was. Awesome. The rain eased up a little but stayed until about mile 8, at which point it finally stopped enough for me to start drying out, only to return as a light shower in the final couple of miles. Overall, a good run.

Ha, this is a good description of the cross country teams I run into on the trails as well. They are not always so polite, they tend to ignore us completely like we don't exist. A couple of the women I run with got kind of pushed off the trail by a group of them and complained to their coach when they saw him a little later - who turned out to be not THEIR coach (was coaching a different group) but the actual dad of one of the kids in the group. He was highly apologetic and I bet that kid and his team got quite a lecture.

Treadmill miles today - it was raining and I had my strength training after so didn't want to get soaked. I slowed the pace a bit from what I would normally do and it seemed to take forever to get to 4 miles. During my strength class we did wall sits, including 1 leg raised at a time and now my quads are going to be feeling that.
@BruinsGal_91 - I am super disappointed that my trip to Boston for work in September is (most likely) cancelled. I was really looking forward to adding on that weekend for fun and running there. I'm going to have to find something to replace that or still just go for the weekend if I can swing it, because running in a different place was something to really look forward to in getting through one of my longest runs. I'm not done pouting about it, but I'll have to regroup for a new plan.

@RunsOnEspresso those are great! They need a Will Run for Whiskey t-shirt!2 -
Tough run tonight as it was 91F when I started and little to no breeze, but made it through the 4 miles that were planned. Husband and I drove the mile over to the trail as I figured it might be a little cooler on the trail vs. running on the asphalt. Glad we decided to do that as I got to run on a different part of the trail that I hadn’t been on in a while and it was pretty with the leaves and shade.
