Thanks @shanaber I've seen that one before but a really good reminder.
In. All my research today I came across a video that shows you what to look for in a shoe if you pronate like I do. I'm not a massive pronator but I know I do both walking and running. A simple way to test if the shoe is suitable for someone who pronates is to flex it. The midfoot shouldn't flex. At all.
So I tested my shoes when I got home.
Old shoe that never caused me any grief but is coming up 10 month old
Hardly any flex but showing some (time to replace)
New shoe I was wearing when I first felt my pain
Ummmm yeah. Not supposed to do that. I think i found my problem. Sigh.
So anyone new to the thread, this is why shoes matter! The wrong shoe can literally cripple you. I thought I picked the right one but was never happy with it. If in doubt, return it. Which is too late now annoyingly.
So yep more rest, no more using those shoes!3 -
Yay! I finally hit the 5Km - even 6. On Saturday, I decided to give it a try. I have to plan the route accordingly if I don't want to add some unnecessary back and forth curving to get more meters in.
So it was nicely cool and sunny and I aimed to run 5Km w/o a walking break for the first time. Well, I had to stop for a traffic light in the beginning but after that, I just ran. And it worked. I finished with 6,3Km in 49 minutes. I was so proud!!! The 5Km needed 41 minutes, which is ok.
So I *know* I can make it and have now a few more weeks to improve it before my first race.
My legs are jelly after a run and going for a sprint in the end (to catch a green traffic light) feels often like my legs are giving up any second since I do very small steps while running (~170+) and don't have the power for long steps in the end... it's a completely different move. Very fascinating. I still have to learn soooo much.

notafatmommy wrote: »Just found you all❤️! Going to set my goal a 100 mile ran in August. I am training for my 1st half marathon. I am doing a 5K on 12/1 and my half on 12/2. Up until July I had never ran more then 2 miles without stopping and I had only done that a few times. I did a lot of run/walk and could walk forever, so running is new thing for me🙂.
44.6 done 55.4 to go!4 -
I ran ONE slow kilometer yesterday with the kids, to see how my quad is feeling. It felt fine until I stopped. It's not too bad, but I have a half marathon on Saturday, and figure an extra rest day will help more than any additional training at this point. So I'm taking it easy.

juliet3455 wrote: »Emperor's Challenge HM today. Well actually 20km and 2050 ft elevation.
Official Result - Gun Start Chip Finish.
2:55:15 to get my Silver Medal 369 of 793 and 41 of 70 AG.
My watch has me at 2:53:42 so it took me 23 seconds to get to the Start Finish line where I started my watch.
Just proves that when you are tired after an event MATH is not strong. 2:55:15 - 2:53:42 = 1:33 not 23.
So it took 93 seconds from Gun until I crossed the official Start Line.
Will be going back next year as I know there is at least another 5 minutes I can - should be able to knock off with better strategy at various points on the course. Mental game is such a big part of any distance run with challenging terrain. Legs still feel pretty hammered out. Will get a short 5k recovery/stretch run tonight.
Also next year will be the 21st Anniversary of the event and Emperor Kris Swanson will be going for his 20 Victory. Think about that he has won this event 19 of the 20 years. I believe that is verging on a Guinness World record.
At the post race banquet in the Hotel they had a 20 yr honor - roll call and 4 people have completed all 20 years. The youngest was a young lady of 25 ie she was 5 years old when she did her first event with her parents.
@Avidkeo Great example of why shoes are so important. Sorry to hear of your injury - glad you caught the root cause before it got more advanced.6 -

The four miles this morning were pretty amazing. I went about 30 seconds slower than usual and just kept a really nice rhythm going the entire run. I was so surprised I tricked my brain into letting me slow down, but it paid off huge. I didn't need to slow down my pace and in fact by the end, when I checked my split times, I actually shaved off 15 - 20 seconds for each mile I completed. So, by the time I finished my run, I had basically shaved off an entire minute from my first mile pace. And I felt like I could have kept going, which was such a great feeling to have at the end.
Got a lot to catch up on! Hope everyone has a great start to the week! Much love for all the help and advice.13 -
08/06 - 3.44 miles
08/13 - 4.43 miles
Total: 7.87/50 miles
As of this morning, I am caught up with this thread!
August has been a busy month - kids starting school and my husband working crazy hours. He is in IT and all the updates the are doing to software programming are taking place over night. He has to be there in case anything goes wrong. This has put a major dent in my running and by major dent I mean it hasn't been happening!
Way behind on my goal, but still hoping I can get there before August ends.
@skippygirlsmom - Happy Belated Birthday! I hope Skip is enjoying college. My oldest will be starting college in 3 years.
@PastorVincent - Sorry about the DNS this weekend.
@RunsOnEspresso - Sorry for your loss!
@RespectTheKitty - Hope the new shoes work out!

@RunsOnEspresso - such heartache! Really sorry you're going through this.
@PastorVincent - sorry about the accident, but glad no one was hurt.
My back has been killing me so haven't run in several days - struggled through 4 this morning. Then "hung" on the inversion table awhile, followed by a stretching routine specific to the spine. Feels pretty good right now. I love Miranda Esmonde White (anybody else hear of her?) for great stretching routines and used to do them regularly. I've not done any in a couple months and that could be my problem. We'll see.
June goal - 44 miles - done
July goal - 52 miles - done
August goal - 57 miles
Next race: Sept. 30 - Wineglass, Corning6 -
So I check the weather - no rain forecasted until many hours from now. Good.
Start my 5-7k lunch walk. The sky turns dark. Someone mentions seeing lightning.
I check the weather again, now it says "rain starting in 8 mins"
Bah. Start walking back not liking the look of the black clouds. Bearly get inside when a BRIGHT bolt strikes with thunder almost at the same time. Loud enough to hear through closed doors and concrete walls.
*sigh*
Back to sitting at a desk and staring at a screen, I guess.

@skippygirlsmom - I love the story about the lock. Sending our kids off to school is both sad and exhilarating (my middle girl leaves for her sophomore year in two weeks). Also, Happy Birthday!
@RunsOnEspresso - I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet pup.
@Avidkeo - I've struggled with posterior tibial tendonitis before I started running, so I knew that I needed good supports for pronation in my shoes. I do have neutral shoes (for trails) but I cannot run in them on pavement for more than a mile or so without arch pain/knee pain. Usually, I wear Saucony Guides, although my latest shoes are Mizuno Waves. I like them, but not as much. Also, I never get more than 200 miles out of my shoes, but that could be because of my weight, maybe...all I know is that the support seems to give out on them around that point, even though there is plenty of wear left in the treads.
After a long weekend of not getting out at all, I managed 5 miles at the lake this morning. I'm planning on going out there as much as possible until I go back to work a week from Friday. After that, I'll be mostly limited to neighborhood streets and the treadmill at the gym except for the weekends. I'm not doing so great on managing my mileage; I'm going to have to kick it into gear to make 40, let alone 50 at the rate I'm going.

Pretty grumpy this morning, which wasn't that unusual, but it never really shook off once I started running. Nothing really specific, just higher anxiety than I’d prefer. Having an anxiety disorder means that sometimes trying to identify what I'm anxious about makes things worse, as I immediately become anxious about every possibility my brain raises. In those cases it's better just to ride it out and look back when my brain isn't trying to eat itself alive. I've started journaling recently and that seems to be helping.
My knee was hurting, too, which has been frustrating me a lot recently. Running and lifting are supposed to be GOOD for me, so what’s with these aches and pains? I know it’s more complicated than that, but it’s still frustrating. I know that I need to accept that I'm going to need to take care of my body if I'm going to push it to do things like run around lakes and deadlift 100 pounds (on deck for tomorrow!) and there are going to be aches and pains no matter what, but I'm just not there yet.
Anyhow, I ran 4.3 miles even though I felt crummy mentally and physically, so that’s a win in my book. I liked running longer last week so I'm rethinking my five-runs-a-week plan in favor of fewer but longer runs. We'll see. I read a story this AM about the second woman ever to lift the Dinnie Stones and am itching to put more time into lifting, but I think waiting until the weather turns is still my best bet to avoid burnout.
