Today was my last long run until my race next Saturday. I work all weekend, so no runs and then all shorter ones for the week up until that point. I was going to start a half marathon training program, but not sure if time will allow that. We'll see. I may just wing it for a bit.

    August goal: 70 miles
8/1: impromptu rest day (3 miles were planned)
8/2: 3.15 miles (6 miles were planned, but heat was too awful)
8/3: 7 miles (new distance best!, 3 were planned, but kept going)
    8/4: planned rest
8/5: 2 miles (planned rest, back on target for the month)
8/6: elliptical and upper body weights
8/7: 8 miles (5.5 planned, but just rolled with the energy, new distance best!)
8/8: 5 miles speedwork and lower body weights
8/9: 4 miles (oh so painful legs!)
    8/10: elliptical, back, abs
    8/11: 7 miles
    8/12: rest
    8/13: 9 miles
    8/14: 3.5 miles tempo
    8/15: 4 miles
    8/16: 8 miles
    60.65 of 70 completed

    UPCOMING RACES
    August 25th - Camp New Hope 10k
    September 7th - 5k Glow Run

    COMPLETED RACES
    January - Frosty 5k
February - Run for the Chocolate 5k
March - Penguin in the Park 5k
April - Lake Sara Dam 5k
May - Run Through the Jungle 5k
    June - French Fried 5k
    July - Firecracker 5k

@Orphia thank you for sharing. he seemed like a good person from his posts on mfp

@kcs76 i could listen to him say anything if he uses the spike accent. his california accent is strange

@quilteryoyo i do aerial yoga/hammock and aerial hoop. i also foster dogs and work on training my recovering feral dog known as speed demon here. a full time hobby is getting the old girl to shut her mouth because she is what i like to call collie^2. border/rough collie is a bossy bossy collie

    @missevil 6,3km awesome!! Congratulations on a great run :+1:

@RunsOnEspresso How do you like the Aftershockz trekz ? Mine are still lying around... I tried them again last week when I had forgotten to charge my usual headphones, but I still have horrible sound quality when running (like they lose connection with my bones with each step or when I turn my head). Really sad, because a) they were really expensive and b) I really liked the idea of leaving my ears free while running for safety reasons. There are so many good reviews on them, I don't know what those people are doing differently.

@amgreenwell Sorry to hear that! I hope you recover quickly *hugs*

@amymoreorless I guess I'm your opposite when it comes to fueling. I get hungry during long runs! It doesn't help if I have gels and energy drinks or whatever. If a run takes three hours or more, I'm really craving something solid to eat. Just something I can chew, so that I actually *feel* like I am eating something. Preferably not something sickly-sticky-sweet.

@quilteryoyo I try to fit in some strength training, cycling, (indoor) climbing and since recently also swimming. In addition to running. Insanity!
This was my month so far:
    Wed, 01/08/2018 Run 4.5 km, Swimming 700m
Thu, 02/08/2018 Bike ride 20.60 km, upper body strength training 36 min
    Fri, 03/08/2018 rest day
Sat, 04/08/2018 Run 12.6 km, bike 9 km
Sun, 05/08/2018 Run 9.5 km, lower body strength 41min
Mon, 06/08/2018 upper body strength 41min
Tue, 07/08/2018 swimming 700m, indoor climbing
    Wed, 08/08/2018 bike 27km, run 4.3km
Thu, 09/08/2018 run 4km (am) + 6.3 km (pm), indoor climbing, core strength 30 min
    Fri, 10/08/2018 rest day
Sat, 11/08/2018 run 11.1 km, upper body strength 35 min
Sun, 12/08/2018 run 14 km, lower body stength 42 min
Mon, 13/08/2018 upper body strength 41min
Tue, 14/08/2018 bike (a couple of short rides to work/the pool =25km combined), swimming 800m, run 5.1km, core strength 20 min
    Wed, 15/08/2018 run 5km
Today will be cycling and indoor climbing again, and maybe lower body strength if I can manage to find the time. I run a lot less this year than I did 201/2017, because I've been picking up too many other hobbies. And in some weeks when there is work or private stuff going on, I do less than what I've listed above. But somehow I managed to go from the girl who hated exercise in school to someone who gets restless if I spent too much time trapped inside in front of a screen. One the non-active hobby side there are mostly reading and patchwork. But I never have nearly enough time for everything I want to do! And like @amymoreorless, I would really love to have more time for "my sleeping hobby"

Re: Music: I love Zombies Run! (I keep repeating myself, I know  ). For a while I tried running with podcasts, both language-learning and running-related. Booooring! I just tune them out after a while. Sometimes I just realised at some point during my run that it was quiet, and couldn't even remember when the podcast ended. And books I just love reading myself, audio-books are never quite moving at my pace, or the voices are "wrong".

Re: personality: I just did one of those tests (http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp - is that the one everyone was doing, or did I miss a link to another one?). It also gave me "INTJ" as a result, with Introvert(31%) iNtuitive(3%) Thinking(16%) Judging(6%) . For whatever it's worth. No huge surprise, since given the choice between "go to a party" or "stay at home and read", I know which one I would prefer
Do I have to register on the Pottermore site to do the test? I wanna be Ravenclaw ^^

E.T.A. Maybe I'll be the only one who doesn't get sorted into a HP house because I refuse to register for random stuff. It's not about sharing my mail, that's what trashmail is for. It's the principle of the thing >:)

@KeepRunningFatboy You have that bike race coming up soon.... you ready?

@LaDispute57 the key to that race is how many donuts one can eat, and the find the bonus donuts at the last stop.

@KeepRunningFatboy has run his final mile, and that was his last stop in here.

I gather from his family's posts on Facebook he passed away suddenly on Friday.

He was inspirational in so many ways.

He'd run a marathon in more than half of the states in the USA.

I will always remember him as the person who inspired me to quit drinking, in February, by posting about being kind to "Tomorrow You".

    Thank you, dear friend.

Oh no, I can't believe it!
I am so, so sorry to hear that.
He was an awesome runner, and an inspiring person. I will miss reading from him!

I want to do a memorial run for him too. Maybe I'll skip climbing tonight, or my rest day tomorrow. I knew him as a runner, so a run for him seems fitting.

@quilteryoyo I forgot I also enjoy hiking and yoga. Yoga/stretching is a huge part of my marathon training. I got PF right before I started and realized how I need to make sure to stretch. No real issues since.

Hiking is not a regular activity. I currently don't have the time and it's too hot to do it here. Unless I go early, which would mean no run.

So far I love them. I haven't noticed any horrible quality or lost connection. I love having both ears open. I do have to have the volume up higher or I can't hear in some high traffic areas (I had the same issue with in ear buds because I only wore one so not a big deal). I also like that I don't have anything in my ear. I used to have to take out my bud and wipe it off because it would get to sweaty (TMI? lol)

Have you tried contacting them? Maybe you got a dud.

@Avidkeo there's actually some people who disagree with the idea that you need to use stability/motion control shoes "against" pronation. And I once read about a study (which I can't find again right now) where they had some overpronators run with motion control shoes and some with minimalist shoes and found no difference in the number of injuries. Although if I remember the test group wasn't very large.

From personal experience, I know that I was diagnosed as a "strong overpronator" when I started running and went to a specialist store with video gait analysis. The diagnosis was repeated the next two times I did an analysis, and I always bought stability shoes with 12mm drop. I was pretty much fine with that - had a bit of shin splints every now and then, but nothing too bad. Until one day (due to a bit of confusion at the store when the shoes I was looking for were sold out and the store employe obviously mixed up his recommendations) I bought the Brooks PureFlow 3, which were neutral shoes with 4mm drop. I couldn't exchange them right away after I noticed, so I tried them out and didn't have any problems. Actually, even the shin splints went away and didn't come back, but I don't know if that was due to shoes or coincidence. So since 2014 I've switched to neutral shoes with 4-6mm drop.
(not the PureFlow anymore, I really loved the 3s, but when I bought the 5 I found Brooks had changed them and they seemed too narrow in the toe box anymore).

I did have some trouble with my left knee last year, but I blame that on a combination of ramping up distance too aggressive during marathon training, and the Saucony Kinvaras that started breaking down already around 300/400km (and I kept running in them too long since I didn't want to believe it, I usually put twice that distance on a pair of running shoes before retiring them).

I'm not saying shoes with less flex aren't going to help you, but you don't have assume that less stable shoes are automatically worse. And maybe you could look into some strength training that would help with weaknesses or imbalances in the hips or glutes, sometimes shoes are not the only think to blame if you feel pain while running.

ETA: I didn't find the study I was looking for, but discovered this meta-analysis (=a summary of the literature by grouping studies together) instead, which is also interesting: http://www.jospt.org/doi/abs/10.2519/jospt.2014.5342?url_ver=Z39.88-2003
I wanted to comment on @_nikkiwolf_ post on pronation. I know almost every running store does their version of a gait analysis and will recommend their orthotic inserts for pretty much everyone even with just a tiny bit of over pronation. I don't fault them for it but I do think they will 'prescribe' orthotics because that makes money for them over and beyond any margin on the shoes. My daughter had this done was convinced she needed the inserts and stability shoes (also recommended). The combination of the two is like correction on top of correction. If anything it should be one or the other and not both, but I honestly think most people should start with neutral shoes unless they have been diagnosed with a problem and had stability shoes (or orthotics) recommended. If you then have a problem go to a doctor (not some kid at the running store) for a thorough exam/analysis. I knew I had a problem with my legs and feet so I had the exam done by my orthopedist and again by my sports chiropractor and my insoles are made based on their findings. I also have a set of exercises from them and the PT to help strengthen my ankles and knees because the orthotics don't 'fix' the problem, they just make it easier to run. Oh, and my daughter - she developed chronic pain in her knees when she ran, which wasn't often because it hurt, until she dumped the old shoes and orthotics...
ETA - link to a pretty good article on this https://www.active.com/running/articles/why-overpronation-happens-and-what-you-should-do-about-it?page=2

@PastorVincent thank you for sharing the saucony sale. I bought four clearance pair with the code. A) saucony is my favorite. B) I am an extreme couponer/bargain hunter and do not spend over $30 for shoes. C) I rarely find saucony at that price. You made my day!

    _________

Tripped over a tree root this morning on my run. Good times.

I'm definitely going to hit my goal this month...in fact, with two weeks left, it looks like I'm going to surpass it by a fair amount.

RE: Other Active Hobbies: I try to get out and swim. I really enjoy that, but it's generally only on the weekend, too busy during the week to fit it in otherwise.

RE: Personality: I have no idea. I am probably more introvert these days, but I must be extremely extrovert at the office due to my line of work. So I'm most likely right in the middle somewhere.
