Here's a good quote: "Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight loss strategy," lead study author Dr. Sara Seidelmann, a research fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said in a statement. "However, our data suggests that animal-based low carbohydrate diets, which are prevalent in North America and Europe, might be associated with shorter overall life span."
Still, Seidelmann said that "if one chooses to follow a low carbohydrate diet, then exchanging carbohydrates for more plant-based fats and proteins might actually promote healthy ageing in the long term."
So, it looks like if I wish to eat lower carbs (fruit/veg/grains with fiber) and higher good fats from olive oil, avocados and nuts, for example, and cut down on animal products, I am good to go, at least in my mind.
I set my macros for 30% carbs, 50% fat and 20% protein (I'm at around 1500 cals/day) but find that I'm most satisfied with 35/45/20. And I need to eat some good carbs before bed - small bowl of high fiber cereal like wheat chex with a bit of whole milk - to keep my blood sugar happy overnight.
I'm trying to get back into 14 or 16 hours of fasting/non-eating between bedtime and the first meal of the following day.
Karen in VA - thank you for the reminder about cotton fabric and knits for gals in third world countries. I remember when I was a young gal and struggling with the "pad and belt" my mom said when SHE was young, all ladies had were cloth to absorb monthly discharge which had to be washed.... I'll bet that's where the saying being "on the rag" came from.
Tampons entered the scene when I was in my teens. I remember the ads, "you can swim wearing Tampax!" My friends and I got a chuckle... we never knew how to swim before but now all it took was this! An old maid friend of my mom's worked at the dime store that carried them and my sister and I just HATED it when she was on duty and we bought a package. What if she told mom? How dare we even think of poking something in "down there", lol. Wherever that was! For being farm kids we were pretty ignorant about human anatomy.

This was:

2.3 years more than the 30%-40% (low-carb) group
1.1 years more than the 65% or more (high-carb) group
The findings were similar to previous studies the authors compared their work with, which included more than 400,000 people from more than 20 countries."
So if you do the maths (roughly), the longevity estimates are 83 years for mod carb, 79 years for extralowcarb, 81 years for low carb and 82 years for high carb. That's life expectancy based on carb consumption alone. Interesting, they haven't broken it down further into any other categories such as amount of exercise, smoking or non, alcohol or non or any other factors that impact on longevity.
No doubt the fat and meat diet believers will soon slander this study and say it wasn't a good study for some reason or other. LOL I am fascinated by longevity studies and the stories that convince me the most are when they go live with the long lived people and study all the factors of their lives. Wendy

Awake early. I'm off to Portsmouth on the train for a fish lunch with my girlfriend. It will take my mind off the move etc. I hope DH will ring the solicitors today. I'm getting nervous again.
All five people in the chain have to agree on the same exchange date and the same completion (moving) date. (The last house in the chain is empty, but it does have owners) Exchange is usually between two weeks and a month before completion. Once we've exchanged it is unlikely to fall through as there is a financial penalty, but until then nothing is certain.
I just want to get the show on the road.

came home last night and my canteliever umbrella is busted, I just bought it in April and it was well over 100.00 I thought it would last longer than 5 months, I had it down and the crank on it is busted.. wont bring the umbrella open or closed..
. Off to take the dogs to the groomers and then see Tal off to her first day of school and then to feed my DFIL and then to go see the a financial planner at my credit union..4 -
Dang, Heather, I'd be clutching people around the ankles by now asking them to put me out of my misery! You're a tough one, you are.
Well, the upshot of my couple weeks' travel and stress, once my swelling from all the long hours of driving went down, I actually ended up losing four pounds in one week. It was a welcome sight, after a long, long slowdown in losses. Too fast, I know... but I'm pretty much counting it as three weeks of loss... just happened to show up in the last week. If I hold it through tomorrow, it will be eight pounds lost in August, whereas I only lost three in July.
Noticed while I was in Texas that my right knee, in particular, was hurting less, so I know the losses are beneficial. When I get on a plane and my thighs don't get all friendly with the person next to me, I'll be happier... It's coming! I had to buy size 12 pants when I got back, as the 14s were falling off me during the trip.
So, in case I forget to write it down tomorrow at end of month, I've lost from 217.9 on January 24 to 180.4 this morning. That's 37.5 pounds lost, just under 2/10 of a pound a day for 233 days, just over a pound a week for 37 weeks, slightly over 5 pounds a month average across the whole seven months. Also down from a size 18 to a size 12 in jeans.
And, in case you're wondering what I'm doing for exercise, the only thing burning calories these days is my brain. That's not bragging, I know I'd feel better if I exercised, and I know I'd be less stressed. But I literally ran out the battery on my seven-hour battery headset yesterday, and was still talking to the folks at work (without the headset) until 9 p.m. last night, after starting my day at 4:30 a.m. Fitting exercise into my day right now seems impossible, but I plan on taking the whole four days off work Friday to Monday and burning a LOT of calories at The Meadows (the house we're rehabbing). Got family coming in, and two more rooms that I'm hoping to get finished this weekend.
One more long day at work today in front of me...

Good morning all!
My WFPB food plan seems to be working... My insulin that started at 40ml twice a day is down to 30ml once a day. My BP is staying around 130/70. Hoping that will also come down soon. My weight started in August at 210 and is now 195. Hoping my CAD will reverse also.

Good morning ladies! Been busy; but have been reading your posts! Today we celebrate Thanksgiving! I am thankful that it didn't require a lot of decoration and preparation. I am also thankful that I have one more day of work in this 12 day stretch and then I get three days off! Today, I will talk to the kids about Thanksgiving and being thankful/grateful for things/people/experiences in our lives. I will show them my gratitude journal and read a few things I am grateful for and let them make their own "thankful books". I bought some mini notebooks at the dollar store and some fall leaf stickers so that they can decorate them. They can't read or write yet; but they are budding artists and they can draw pictures, use stickers, or tell mom or dad what they are thankful for and have them write it for them. Good habit to start.
Frankiesgirl - Don't worry about the kkk post! That is just our Pip, who marks her spot with random letters or numbers. No ill intent there!
Lisa- You are an amazing woman! Just three short months ago you were juggling a move, your job, your writing career, and family. You are now moved (temporarily), found new home, working on new home, traveling for job, writing daily, and juggling family and your own well being! You need a cape!
Heather- fingers crossed that your exchange date is made and agreed upon by everyone! This is LOOOOONG overdue! I am so ready for you to be moved! lol AND...if I am ready, I am sure you and your DH are more than ready! Hugs to you!

Wendy- Great link! I am always interested in food and how it affects our bodies, etc. I find it odd that genetics is never talked about with the majority of them, however. I am a firm believer in whole foods, healthy food habits, exercise daily. I take each "diet/lifestyle plan" with a grain of salt. A meal plan that works for me, might not work for my husband. And so on. I think longevity is basically a genetic thing, too. I think eating healthy can and will lengthen your life; but I think you need to find what your body needs and go with that. My mom used to say, "Everything in moderation." That has pretty much become my mantra.
Well, I need to get up and get my breakfast made for myself, before my kiddos get here. Looks like the weather today is going to be nice (and cooler), so we will be able to get outside! That always makes the day go faster. Tonight I decorate for Christmas! (tomorrow's holiday) Ho Ho HO! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

This is my fourth time logging into Fitness Pal to reach my weight loss goals. Each time I have abandoned with no success. I just can't get my mind right. I came across your group in the community section. I am 57 yrs old and need to lose 80lbs. I was an avid runner - tae boer - beach body - exercise nut - and got injured (both achilles). Was put on no activity - sat around feeling sorry for myself - ate - gained lots of weight. Now I have this huge goal ahead of me. I recently joined Planet Fitness and am hoping your group will help me stay on track. Hopefully the 5th time is the charm!

Hi ladies. Well here I am, finally! The support staff at MFP could not replicate my problem and told me to use Chrome, which at home is very iffy. I can get on it at work. So anyway. I hope all of you have been well and I have missed you all. Down a little more, but still not changing my weight until I get below my lowest. I write it down in my blood glucose log though.7

On the train back home. Enjoyed oysters and chilli prawns for lunch under a parasol. We walked and talked along the sea front and visited a church where Charles II married Catherine of Braganza.
Then we mooched around the outlet shops and I ended up buying a long, sleeveless, black shift dress with long slits up the sides. Vneck. It is Jaeger and hugely reduced. Will be fabulous for the cruises. I fitted into a 'small'
