@shanaber OMG your pup is a beauty. Thanks! Yes, I ordered two shirts yesterday (one for swimming and one for running - and you're right, the reviewers complained it wasn't great for breathability) and I will pick up some swim leggings once I can find a good deal here in Canada. I see a few Hawaiian companies make some of the best-looking SPF/UPF clothing, so that will be a good reason not to cancel my vacation - I need to go there to try on and buy everything.
@marisap2010 Oh, that is too bad about your dad. Thanks for sharing that. You're right, I can find other activities if I can't do the ones we originally planned.
@Scott6255 Bloating is uncomfortable. Hope it passes quickly!
Thanks again for all the words of encouragement and advice, everyone. I am feeling much calmer and optimistic.
@hesn92 Good luck! I just finished week 4. I am scared about week 5!
@mbaker566 Ooooh, I have puppy envy. They look like great running and snuggle partners. That is so nice of you to foster them. And sorry about your bad run.7 -
Heat and humidity have returned. BAH. Was supposed to run 10 miles this morning, but could barely manage 7 outside, did 2 more on the treadmill. Sometimes I'm surprised someone doesn't stop and offer to call 911. With my red hair and light complexion, I am quite the sight when I get heated. My left heel is barking at me a little - which scares the bejeebers out of me. I lost all of 2017 to PF and do not want a repeat of that. I did my heel/foot stretches and will take it easy for a few days.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 47/60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH

Bah, 10 minutes standing at work in my lab shoes has my foot hurting more than it did all weekend.8

I had looked on the garmin website for a replacement band, but the FR35 showed that they did not have replacement bands for that model. It did say to contact customer service so I did and they are sending me a replacement band for free. Hopefully the glue will hold until I get it and surely if it is coming from Garmin it will be the correct band.8

Stupid question which I probably know the answer too but I'm overthinking things and really ought to go find something to do other than stare at my training plan. I'm doing the Hal Higdon Novice 1 half marathon training plan (aka total noob plan) but I do kilometres not miles, and it's really annoying because the conversion leaves me with things like 4.8km, 3.2km, 6.4km, 8.1km. I know, I know, the numbers are round in miles but I'm too used to km. Anyway, question is, surely it won't matter really if I do 5km instead of 4.8, 3km instead of 3.2, 6.5 instead of 6.4, etc etc, right? I just really hate unrounded distances lol.
Can't wait to get out there in the morning and get started, only thing that concerns me is running 3 consecutive days, I've only ever done 2 in a row before. Onwards and upwards!

@eleanorhawkins That should be fine. I modified a Hal Higdon plan for my HM training. I don't think rounding up or down slightly would be a problem at all. Good luck! You can do it!3

Almost, it's the half but there is a similar pdf! Thanks, I had never thought to google it, d'oh, went straight to the website lol.

I usually just used the difference between the rounded and unfounded conversion as my target distance. So e.g. if it was 3 miles I aimed for 4.8-5.0 km. If it was 2 miles I did 3-3.2km. I always figured it would all work out in the end that way and I didn't have to worry about exact distances if my route was off by a bit.
Honestly unless you're running streets with a perfect grid or running on a track it's hard to get exactly rounded distances anyway. The instructions on the HH plans say to come close and don't skimp on the long runs - I think that's the most important thing.5 -
This weekend I got to run 5.16 miles while visiting my husband’s terrible grandparents in Overland Park, Kansas. On Friday morning I ran a very sticky (dew point around 71) forty minutes along a bike/walking path following a creek not too far from the hotel. It was a little bit of a slog but mostly it felt good to get out there after a long night of driving, and I'm on track for the month, although not quite as far ahead as I'd hoped. The extra calories were definitely welcome over the weekend of diner food, fast food, and Chinese takeout. Woof.
Saturday morning we had planned to meet the terrible grandparents earlier than we had on Friday so I decided to suck it up and give the hotel fitness room a try, possibly the first time in my life I’ve ever run on a treadmill. It was fine. Better than not running, I guess, or spending 20 minutes in direct sun walking to and from the running path like I’d done on Friday. It seemed super loud and it took a long time to figure out a comfortable pace, but it did the job. After 20 minutes I decided that was enough and lifted weights for a bit instead, so I got a nice all-around workout in.
The visit itself was fine - I'm 3 for 3 on the terrible grandparents being on their best behavior around me. It's funny how stressed out my husband and his parents were about our visit and then everything went fine. My husband and I had fun in the car coming up with the rules for a card game about changing the subject when your terrible elderly relatives bring up politics/religion/etc - we're gonna Kickstarter that *kitten* and make a million dollars. And we actually got to hear some great stories about their international travel - he was an engineer for the air force during the cold war and they did a lot of mission work after he retired.
The stickiest part of the visit came on Saturday morning when terrible grandma invited us to church on Sunday and for some completely unknown reason my husband said he'd be happy to go, apparently forgetting that we'd agreed to be on the road early so we could get home mid-afternoon. I told him in the car that if he felt like he needed to go that was fine, but that I was staying in the hotel and working instead of yet another day of being "shown off". Slightly-less-terrible-than-grandma grandpa actually got us out of that one later that evening by insisting we'd need to be on the road before church even started at 10 AM and terrible grandma backed down.
This morning I decided that sleeping in was called for, so I took an extra rest day, although I'm thinking about lifting this evening. It’s going to be a very busy week but I’m still hoping to get a good 20-24 miles of running in. I haven’t figured out when I’m going to do my long run, as I’m going to be at a walking puzzle event most of the day on Saturday, but hopefully I’ll figure it out. I’m giving blood Wednesday afternoon and I need to build in a little recovery time there, too. Two of my best friends just had a baby and my mom needs groceries, plus I've got dentist and eye exams scheduled this week, so it's going to be a busy few days. Again, woof.
Loved reading about everyone’s weekends, especially @rheddmobile’s story about the stroller lady. I read the “passing on the left” bit to my husband and he cracked up. So sorry to hear about your diagnosis, @RunRachelleRun, but I’m glad that you caught it when you did. Good luck with everything and I hope you’re still able to enjoy your trip!

@mbaker566 - love all the pictures of you pups! Speed demon looks so proud in her new shirt! Hobbes gets cold too so he has a few sweaters and a jacket that is easy on/off for agility class nights. I am surprised one or both of those puppies didn't end up coming home with you too and the new foster looks like a sweetheart!
@biketheworld - I get SO red when I run and it is hot out! I think I mentioned this before but I had a neighbor actually ask me if I was ok... then say really are you ok? Ha!
@eleanorhawkins - I typically take the plan distances as an 'at least' that many miles/kilometers, etc. especially if you add on a warmup and cool down to the distance. As @sarahthes mentioned don't skimp on the longer runs though.
@MegaMooseEsq - glad the visit with the Terribles didn't go too terribly
My run today was not great. I waited too long and by the time I did get out it was hot, too hot to take Hobbes the Vizlsa. My legs were stiff especially at the top of one of my quads. I can't figure out what it is or how to stretch and work it out and it definitely didn't loosen up during the run. I also ended up going further than I planned because it was closer to run to the bathroom on the trail than to home. I thought I was over this round of stomach issues (had no problem on my 10 mile long run) but apparently not.

You already heard that just rounding up is fine (and what I probably would do in your situtation). But another option for you is to just move the decimal over one. So instead of 3.2km, just run 32km. That way it is nice and round.13 -

I managed to get. Get 6k in this morning. I was a bit slower than usual but hey, I did it. I am learning it takes me about 3 days to get back to pace after 5 days off. I'm pretty confident I'll be good for another 6 tomorrow so will rest then do a long one Friday morning. Then rest Sat and race Sunday! I'm getting excited! It's my first race in 7 years!5
-
@Avidkeo Good luck with your race on Sunday! I'm sure you'll do great.
@MegaMooseEsq Glad the visit with the terrible grandparents went well. It didn't really sound terrible at all. Often, figuring out how to change the subject is all it takes - or ask leading questions about their earlier days. Most older people like to talk about how things were when they were growing up.
I didn't run today. I was scheduled to run 1.5 miles, but I played tennis this morning and was just not feeling it. So, I'm switching days and calling today a cross training day and will run tomorrow, I hope.5 -
Hi guys,
It’s been awhile since I posted anything. I’ve been having issues with my back and also moving my right arm. They did an ultrasound seems there is a tear in the muscle of the extensor and flexor so has been ugly couple of weeks.
I changed physiotherapists and now it’s two sessions a week and tons of home exercises to do. I’m not complaining but I did react in the beginning to a bunch of them. But the body is coming along nice now. I finally see progress.
The running on the treadmill I’m not ready.
Seems it’s going to be another two months before I can consider that.
That’s ok I have walking and hiking I can do. Like this sun past I did 16 km. oh I felt such freedom.
Was feeling like a caged animal these past weeks in pain, alone and upset at the world for everything that I was going through.
I was reading what everyone was posting but to sore to post replies. Too many posts to catch up on. So, ill just continue from here.
Welcome to the new members.
@RunRachelleRun I’m sorry to hear what your going through. It’s horrible I’ve gone through it many years ago. I used to live in the Turks and Caicos and was so tiny size wise I snorkelled and dove in a bikini. I walked around a lot in my bikini top that was a big factor.
My spot/mole on my back was removed, my face got scrapped and dealt with as well Left no scars on my face. Years have gone by nothing has come back or given complications. Mine were caught in time.
For my back I was told to wear tight woven shirts spf shirts are a waste of money that with washes is not the same. So don’t trust them.
For the face high spf 1oz to Cover your face people always under apply spf. You must reapply every 2 hours they say I was told every hour.
Plus buy a tiley hat with the green rim underneath that will help bounce Sun rays from your face that come from cement or snow reflexion.
The surgery done on my face that’s a *kitten* for pain. The back it’s just a sting from the needles for numbing. It actually sounds more scary than what it is. It’s been 11 years for me with no reoccurrence or complications.
It’s hard, it’s scary and the unknown makes it even worse.
Take a deep breath you’ll be fine. Medical care have come a long way in the past 11 years.
About your holiday? If the doctor didn’t say “ cancel” don’t. Tell him about your trip if he clears you to fly. Go!
Have fun, relax life is short and stressful enough to let your fears take over.
Don’t forget to post a photo of your trip

@MobyCarp I'll have to check with the running store. Unfortunately they are 60 miles away. But I can call them and ask what they think about it. @noblsheep I have seen replacement bands online, but the one that I ordered didn't fit. I may just have to keep trying until I get the right one. So far the super glue is holding.
@hesn92 I did C25K in October of 2016. I remember Week 5 Day 3 like it was yesterday. I was both excited and nervous about it. @rheddmobile is right. It really is a turning point, at least it was for me.
Yea it’s a big jump up from two 8 minute runs!! I’ll be fine though what’s the worst that happen? Lol4 -

I managed to run outside before my circuit training session today. It felt a little cooler to me before I started but definitely still sticky out there. Quite a bit of leg work in today's session too so now I'm feeling a bit wobbly.

Got in a 3 mile run after a longggg day at work. Felt good to have a break, logging back on now for more work. :-/
@MegaMooseEsq, I get the same way interacting with some of my family... the stress leading up to it is almost always way worse than anything that happens during. Glad your visit went well.
Made it through another Monday, whoo hoo!

Thanks @shanaber and @quilteryoyo and @baggles36 - I joked with my husband on the ride home that I think his family is reverse-gaslighting me because I keep having these perfectly fine visits with his grandparents and everyone else keeps assuring me that they really are terrible (his aunt called 3-4 times leading up to and during the trip to make sure everyone was going okay). I think the grandparents have decided I'm their best chance for great-grandkids before they die and they don't want to do anything to alienate me. It was an odd weekend for sure, but that's families for you.6

@mbaker566 I have this one
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01BNACZI0/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_in_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I really like it. It’s comfortable doesn’t chafe and holds 2 liters in the bladder. There is a front pocket that is big enough to hold another bottle if you wanted.
I actually only fill it halfway then refill at 7-11s along the way. I’m a shorty and carrying too much water literally feels like it’s weighing me down.

Speedy run this morning. I started fast and got faster - in fact my final kilometre was sub-5 minutes! I finally feel I'm fully recovered from my dose of the flu. Thank goodness!

@baggles36 Welcome!
@Spidricks Another welcome!
@kgirlhart That's awesome that Garmin are sending you a free band!
Summer still hasn't received word that we're over half way through September already and it's past time for it to call it quits for 2018, so this morning felt warm and very humid. Can't wait to complain about how much I miss moaning about the heat.

5 trail miles at the lake, hot but otherwise lovely. Going for my stretch goal of 50 miles.
So, this is odd... I got the link today to the finish line video for my 5k. Looked at myself, usually I look like a shambling zombie by the end of a race but this time I looked almost perky, that was nice. What's odd is that I looked up my AG winners out of curiosity and my AG was won by a tall, athletic young man visibly wearing the bib number of the AG winner for the female 50-54 winner.
Also, the female masters winner is slowly walking a dog, and clearly her 23 minute time is her walking the mile walk, not running the 5k. And the second place finisher in the AG is also a walker with not a hair out of place. It's theoretically possible that both of these women ran like hell for the first 2.8 miles and then slowed to a casual walk when they turned the corner in view of the finish camera, but it seems damned unlikely. The course was set up so the mile walk started 15 minutes after the 5k and has the same start and finish, with the middle cut out.
I reported the man. The woman whose bib it was has run a couple of other local races and ordinarily runs 13 minute miles. It seems weird that anyone would deliberately cheat on a charity 5k, so maybe she gave her bib to her son or something without realizing he would win the AG. If he just ran with her bib that would be one thing, but he actually took the award away from the next person...10 -
I really had good intensional to go out and do a good walk. But I'm so exhausted. Dr said it's the meds making me drowsy. Which doesn't make a difference to me. What's the point of less pain, if I'm this tired to go out and even walk. So, here I am showered and in bed since 2000-8pm. Hopefully I'll get up early and do a good walk. :-(10

So Florence is in town and due to my schedule, it is likely I will not get a run in the next two days... AND I had to work late. I almost said "bah" and wrote the week off, but in the spirit of my son's music:

I ran as long as I could in the time I had. Soaking wet... but eh, with the humidity that pretty much the case anyways.5 -

If he just ran with her bib that would be one thing, but he actually took the award away from the next person...
Wow. Cheating is sooooo frowned upon... I'm glad you caught it and reported it. I dont see how when they handed the AG award for a womans AG, they didn't notice the man wasn't a woman...
You can always post that on FB or uh, another runners site, I cant remember, letsrun maybe, if you dont get satisfaction.3
