@RunRachelleRun It's something I've thought about before, how it's unfair that men typically get to run when and where they want with little to no concern, whereas women have to think about personal safety before running all the time.

Got in another sweaty nine miles before meeting up with the group and adding in another sweaty five.

In other news, the shopping area where we start running from has started putting up the Christmas lights already. At this rate, they'll be selling Easter eggs in a couple of weeks.

It is illegal in Canada to use pepper spray on a person. If you buy it for protection against bears or dogs you have to sign your life away acknowledging this, and you can't just carry it around (it's a prohibited weapon) as you could be charged.

Correct! not illegal in all states but this group is read everywhere in the world.

Re: carrying weapons on a run. In my city it's illegal to bring a gun into a park even if you have a concealed carry permit. Which is one reason that muggers specifically target people at parks, they know they cannot be armed.

My neighborhood is actually middling-okay for this city. There are places here which are much worse. My vet's assistant grew up on a street where of 11 boys who used to play together, he was the only one who was alive and not in prison by the time he became a legal adult. This town has one of the highest murder rates per capita in America, and I don't know about the rape rate currently but for decades we were the rape capital of America. (Pause to look up current statistics.) according to CBS, Memphis is the third most violent city in the US, above Baltimore but under St Louis and Detroit. The violent crime rate in Memphis is 1,820 per 100,000 residents, and in 2016, 196 people were murdered there.

@sarahthes Exactly! and these comments are read in different parts of the world with different rules and I think we should be careful what is posted. Just in case I’m saying.
But yes, it’s illegal in Canada. :-)

I did not want to run tonight, but I really don't want to have to run tomorrow and I was already dressed, so I sucked it up and did it. That's about all there is to say about that one!

@midwesterner85 - I'm ready to ditch the full marathon and go for the micro-marathon! Done in a minutes, fried pickles and beer. Sounds awesome!

Great run in beautiful weather yesterday. More beautiful weather today for club practice. I didn't make it there.

In the middle of the night, I woke up with my right ankle hurting. It hurt to walk to the bathroom. Took a naproxen, poked it, felt where it hurt. Consistent with an old Posterior Tibial Tendon strain. Sigh. Get plenty of sleep. Not as sore to being poked in the morning, fairly comfortable to walk . . . and felt more like injury than training ache when I jogged the hallway while the eggs cooked.

Okay, *maybe* I stepped on it wrong when I took it out of the ice bucket yesterday evening. Or maybe it was a repetitive motion thing that didn't become apparent right away. Whatever. Took today as an extra rest day. Took another naproxen on schedule, plan to let it wear off in the middle of the night and see how it feels without drugs masking it in the morning.

Dear God, I hope this can be taken care of by a couple days of rest. I'd like to run a 5K cross country on Sunday, and I have a marathon to run a week from Sunday.

Morning all. Its sad to hear that people literally fear for their lives when running. I agree with a PP that reiterated that most sexual crime is committed by someone known to the attacker. Its so rare to have a genuine stranger rape that they make the news and that's why our PERCEPTION of stranger attacks are so high, even they just don't happen that often. Also, how long the attacks are in the news for can skew our sense of safety.

I admit that I'm pretty blase but I find it interesting that overall the ones who are most afraid are those living in the USA, which is also the place that allows guns for "safety". interesting contradiction.

Ok, safety aside, I ran 11km this morning. It was absolutely beautiful out. it had just finished raining, it was the perfect temperature and the sun came up at just the right time. I changed my rout a bit - I normally start with the uphill bit and get that out of the way, but no streetlights on that section. so I did the out and back flat bit first, then it was light enough I was happy with the uphill bit. Having it in the middle of my run instead of at the beginning was definitely a challenge and it showed. my overall pace after that run was about 15 seconds slower than I would have expected. I think I'm going to do this for a few more long runs. Train the legs for the hard bit in the middle cant be a bad idea.

Oh and I think my new shoes are a little too tight in the toes. I didn't notice on shorter runs, anything under 8k seems ok, but I am noticing on longer runs I'm getting the odd blister, and my little toes start to feel numb at around 9-10km. sigh. I just cant win with shoes at the moment.

Rest day tomorrow, then 9k "race" Sunday. I say race because I'm only racing myself, I don't care where I come. but it is being officially timed which is cool. Getting excited

You described yesterday's weather/run perfectly and I would have had more of the same today but today is my non-run/gym day!! The record high for yesterday was 95 in 1954 and was forecasted to be 94, but I know my phone showed 95 w/ heat index of 101.

However, a nice cool front is coming in tonight and tomorrow is supposed to be a 20 degree temp change, so should be nice for my long run on Sat!! Looking further ahead, I'm seeing lows in the 40s and highs in the low 60s!!

Hopefully Texas will get some relief soon.

@rusgolden Gasp! You are right! I just checked the weather for Saturday. A low of 66 degrees!!!!! Oh, that makes me happy. There is an 80% chance of rain but if it is 66 degrees my butt is going out for a really wet AND NOT HOT run. Hooray!

I am not seeing any 40 degree weather but that is normal. We don't normally see the temperature dip that low until December (if we are lucky).

Maybe your 66 degrees is why we are getting 5 cm (2") of snow...

Sorry @sarahthes. I imagine it sucks just as much on the other side of the weather spectrum.

Ha! My daughter is running a “micro-marathon” put on by a micro-brewery next month. 0.5 km - They even give out a metal and t-shirt (and beer). That’s my kind of marathon. 😂

The problem is that there are areas of the US that are very safe, and there are places where even a man should not run alone or really at all. I know in landmass Canada is much bigger, but I suspect USA is much more diverse. There are very safe and very unsafe areas. Very rich and very poor. We have it all here.

My wife runs all the time by her self and has no issues. I run in downtown Pittsburgh and see lone women running all the time. That is not to say there are not unsafe areas, I know a lady runs with bear spray for dogs and a 45 for 2 legged predators.

I wish it was not that way, but gotta live in the real world. Sadly.

A few years ago, I carried “bear spray” on my waist and attempted to use it during a dog attack. I ended up spraying myself (thigh), so I gave up on it. I didn’t know you couldn’t carry it in the open. Thanks for that info.

The same company @kgirlinhart linked to also sold a small alarm, which may be the best solution. That would likely scare an animal if it is loud enough. And hopefully attract human attention if in other trouble.

@travelling_lots I am in Maple Ridge. We have the mountains just to our north and a lot of agricultural land with berry farms. We get our fair share of wild creatures and a lot of loose dogs.

I have to say I feel very lucky and very safe in our neighbourhood. I've been running for 20+ years and my only "incident" was once had some drunk guy run alongside me for a bit and try and strike up a conversation but as we were running uphill and he was, well, drunk, he didn't last long. It wasn't scary (about 5:30pm in summer on a busy road) and was rather amusing. However, when I told my husband he was horrified. He *prefers* me not to run alone in the dark. I don't because my eyesight is questionable in low light and I'm terrified of falling flat on my face, not of being attacked, however I will happily head out around 5:30am during summer to beat the heat.

I'm way more terrified of being run over by someone coming out of their driveway to the point I try not to run between 7am and 8am on weekdays. People seem to be half asleep at the wheel.

Recently a woman in my neighbourhood had her *kitten* grabbed by a teen on a bike when she was out running. She gave chase and, as I know her quite well, all I can say is that he was lucky she didn't manage to catch him!

As for wild animals, well, there's always dogs on the loose but I've been lucky so far. Far worse are dogs on those long retractable leads - I've nearly been tripped more than once when some dimwitted owner is walking on one side of the path, their dog on the other, and they haven't retracted the lead or made any attempt to pull the dog aside. Instead they leave a thin rope at ankle height, right where you're headed...

I think the recent murder of Mollie Tibbitts has thrown a bunch of running groups into freak out mode. At least in ones I belong to. But this isn't the first time a person has been murdered running and it won't be the last. But as others have stated, it is rare. But I have never seen people get so freaked out before.

Even when two women were murdered in NY (I think) a few summers before. Or when the woman that yelled not today *kitten*. Like there was some talk but not the level of paranoia recently.

When I was in high school someone was stabbed on a running path through a marsh. A lot of people freaked out and stopped running there for a bit (even after the guy was caught) but after a few months, it was back to normal. And as far as I know, no one has been stabbed there since.

I'm not letting it change the way I do things. I've always been aware of my surroundings and trust my gut.

This morning was amazing! Only 71 degrees but 93% humidity (it rained yesterday - which was amazing). It was cool but I ended up all sweaty. My vest was wet, on the outside, not the side against my back. Pace felt easy and a bit faster than it has been. And a lower heart rate. YAY FALL(ish)!
