@MobyCarp Hope your ankle heals up soon.
Got up bright and early this morning for my run before work. Well, maybe not quite so bright...12:30am. Definitely early though.
There was supposed to be rain; lots and lots of rain. Rain of biblical proportions. Home-Depot-all-sold-out-of-Arks levels of rain. In over four hours, I encountered...nada. I still got wet though, because sweaty humid, that's why.

Yesterday my husband headed out fishing early so I was awake from 5am. Consequently I was shattered by mid afternoon, however, it's our wedding anniversary so we were due to go out for dinner. I had to drop the children at their grandparents after school (45 minute drive each way) so hubby suggested I have a half hour snooze when I got home to recharge before we went out. However, I wisely decided if I wanted to reenergise, a half hour run would be so much more effective. And it was.

We've had 6 inches of rain in the last 8-9 hours. Bit north of us has had 12+, okc/Ada. Tomorrow should be prime for a double digits run, even if the rain continues as predicted. They're calling this a 500 year rain event (OKC/Ada). I'll take it. But my cats arent so keen on it.

@Elise4270 I would prefer rain to the snow we are getting, but maybe not quite so much of it.

Today I got to run 2.07 miles after lifting weights. I started off a little faster than usual so decided to stick with that rather than do the slow start followed by sprints between bikers deal. So I kept the first mile pretty quick, then alternated picking up the pace and recovering on the run, no walking. It’s not really a plan, but it’s fun and that’s good for me. I had a moment coming up to my house where I thought about where I am now as a runner compared to where I was a year ago, and it made me pretty happy.
The weather was genuinely chilly today - I wore a sweater to my eye exam this morning. Which, to go off topic for a bit, has finally convinced me to stay away from conventional optometrists’ offices going forward. The exam was fine but more expensive than I’d expected, they refused to give me my pupillary distance unless I paid an additional $50, and I got the third degree from the tech about buying glasses online. Admittedly he asked if I wanted to hear it first and I said yes because I was curious to see if he had anything convincing to say, which he did not.
The whole experience reminded me about a company that is a client of a non-profit law firm I used to work for who have developed an online exam to allow doctors to write vision prescriptions without an in-person exam, so I decided to give it a go. $20, took about 15 minutes, and they’ll do a PD measurement off a photo with a credit card on my face.
I’m really interested to compare what they come up with to what I got from the in-person exam. What really sold me on the concept was looking at the list of doctors who work with them in my area - they send your test results to an optometrist in your state to review and write you a prescription. A lot of the University of Minnesota doctors (who have an excellent reputation) work with them, but also a doctor I’d gone to a couple of times last decade. Also, $20 (which my insurance will reimburse) is worth a shot.
Back on subject, I missed the deadline to transfer my 5k registration for the Twin Cities Marathon weekend to the 10k, so I guess I’m running the 5k. That was my original goal for the year so I’m not mad about it. I think I’ve got a shot for a sub-30 - that’d be a nice way to wrap up the year. You know, other than my second half marathon and whatever nonsense I get up to this winter. I still need to sign up to volunteer for the Marathon - my husband keeps putting of deciding whether he wants to come with and forgetting that they're not going to let him just show up.

Haha, awesome. A friend of mine gave me a cat harness years ago, but the two cats I had at the time didn't take to it: one would escape from it no matter what I did, and the other would flop over and refuse to move. My new cat is too small for the harness so I'll have to wait to try it again.
That's exactly what my cats do lol. They are too paranoid to be walked anyway I think, we got the girl from a shelter where she seemed to tolerate being touched and picked up. Come home and suddenly she is bolting from everything. Took months before I could pet her. She was probably too freaked to move back when we first met her.

36 km today (22.4 miles) to celebrate my 36 month (3 year) running anniversary, in 4:01:40
On my first runniversary I did 12 km.
On my second runniversary I did 24 km.
Looks like next year is ultra time again!
The weather was still and perfect, and the sunrise and lake were stunning.
Very happy with how it all went, and now very happy I've done my last big long run and it's taper time for 3 weeks before Melbourne Marathon on October 14.

@mbaker566 - love the pictures of your pups! I think even the foster looks so happy. I am sure she is enjoying getting out and moving too! I have to say one of the 1st puppies we got from the shelter was ID'd as a boy and the vet I worked for at the time said it was a boy but it was a girl. Granted a very small terrier puppy that we later determined was no where near the 8 weeks the shelter thought/told us at the time. With a grown dog I can't imagine not realizing!
I do have a harness for Hobbes but I do not use it when we run. He is harness trained and walks just fine with or without it but I have not found a harness yet that doesn't rub sore 'hot' spots as his fur is short and very thin so provides little or no protection.
I am the weirdo who is always watching out for everyone else on the trail/sidewalk. I don't want anyone to have to deal with Hobbes unless they want to and I want him to. I don't want kids running up to him or him getting in the way of bicycles. Scooters and other kid type vehicles frighten him a bit so we go out of our way to move out of the way...
@ContraryMaryMary - Happy Anniversary! Hope you had a very nice dinner and celebration!
@MegaMooseEsq - that is interesting about the eye exam. It will be interesting to see how they compare.
@noblsheep - have a wonderful vacation in Ireland! It should be beautiful running there if you get the chance!
Today I had planned to run... was all dressed and did go out but I just didn't feel like running. We ran a few sections and I just decided to walk. We walked almost the entire route I had planned to run for just under 4 miles. Saw this beauty fly over us several times but could not get a shot of him inflight.
Also I have been looking for a light weight long sleeved shirt to wear running as an alternative to wearing so much sunscreen. Both my doctor and dermatologist have been on me about covering up more but I feel a bit claustrophobic when I wear long sleeves when I run, even in cool/cold weather. The amount of sunscreen required though to cover almost my entire body is ridiculous, hard to apply (even with the new sprays) and so expensive! Using it every day I seem to go through a can of spray about every 1.5-2 weeks! So hunting for cool lightweight long sleeved running shirts... I was at REI yesterday to return some shoes and found this one on clearance and I figured I could give it a try. It is Oiselle so even on clearance it was at the high end of what I am willing to pay for a running shirt. I wore it today and ok, I didn't run much in it but we were out for over an hour and it was amazingly comfortable, let the air through and dried super quickly. Now I am going to have to see if I can find at least one more.7 -
10K trails around the lake and boardwalk. It was almost 100 degrees F and we were chased by bees! Which I'm allergic to! I'm pretty sure they were carpenter bees which can't actually sting anyone, but when you're allergic it's still really scary having a mad bee bonk against your face. The last time a bee stung me my hand looked like a rubber glove someone had blown up and by the time I got to the hospital I couldn't breathe.
Thanks to the bees our "easy run" turned into an unscheduled fartlek. Lots of screaming (from me anyway, more cursing than screaming from my husband) and sprinting. They chased us for over a mile. Every time we thought they had given up we would get bonked by another bee. I dunno what we did to get on their bad side. We had the park all to ourselves due to the heat, except for one young couple making out in a shady spot.8 -

Ooh, good to hear what you think of the shirt, I am considering buying the same one but in purple. I need something long sleeved but light to cut the wind when it gets really windy in autumn.4 -
Hi all,
Well the 9k run is a no go for me tomorrow. The accommodation we stayed in was not suitable for 2 adults and 2 children, the kids didn't sleep at all last night, and if they did the same tonight then there is no way I would be able to do 9k. I also got the worst ache in my back after sleeping in a bed that was basically one big dip with a 2 year old's head on my tummy. So we decided to bring them home. I wont deny, the fact its been pouring down for 2 days, and a portion of the run is on trails that's likely to be just a mud pit by the time I go through it, pass. And given its 7:40pm and I've almost passed out on the couch, I think right decision.
However I did buy new shoes (take 2). Hopefully these don't give me blisters. I had proper gait analysis done on the treadmill and they felt good. I'll probably do a 9k run tomorrow anyway, test out the new shoes, see how they perform. Unsure if I should keep the other ones as short distance shoes - they are fine for anything up to about 7/8km, or just switch them to work shoes given I kinda need new work shoes. And convenient shoes to be wearing if I decide on a lunch time run...10 -

Hmm it is race morning here...
Not bad, not bad at all. Now of course had I remembered I was doing a 5k with decent weather on flat terrain I might have done some speed work (probably not lol) so that I would be ready for a solid PR attempt. Instead, I am here eating breakfast and looking at MFP posts.
10 am Race Start is petty darn nice though!11 -

Ran 5 this morning. Transition going on for me lately. I'm not driven to run a large number if miles and I am choosing at least two rest days a week. It feels healthier. If the Garmin Vo2 is any good then it is actually improving my fitness.work is taking more of my energy and perhaps when it eases up, I'll be able to increase my miles again.9

@MegaMooseEsq Yah, I hate eye exams. I went last weekend and it was over $300 with insurance. Then they kept trying to talk me into glasses. I have a pair. My perscription doesn't change enough to justify getting them every year.
This was after lenscrafters wouldnt let me confirm my appt then said I didnt have one (despite it showing on line and getring a call) and scheduled someone else in my spot and wouldn't allow me to come in despite scheduling it a year in advance.2 -

@shanaber Thanks for sharing the shirt. I am going to MEC today (Canada’s version of REI) to try on a couple myself.
@ContraryMaryMary Happy anniversary!
@MegaMooseEsq Optometrists also check for things like glaucoma and macular degeneration, which can cause blindness. I would try to see one every few years just for the eye health check.
Good luck with the race @PastorVincent!5 -

Accomplished my first 20-mile run this morning. The weather was a big improvement over last week's humidity filled slog-fest. I am exhausted but pleased with how it went over all. A small amount of "why am I doing this to myself" and a large amount of "OMG, I just ran 20 miles." Now trying to peel myself off the couch so I can go eat all the food. I have a friend in town so I'm going out to lunch - meaning my nap is going to have to wait. But a big burger and beer are calling my name.

My feet were heavy today. Scuffed them several times. I was tired but I pushed through. I was struggling with form too. I kept looking at my feet. I kept reminding myself to look up. The good news is I averaged 13:10 which is my fastest long run this summer. I also had great negative splits with the exception of the mile that I stopped at home for Nuun performance and cooling towel. I grab it and walk around the black (approx .25 miles) usually in the middle. Hopefully, soon I won't need to do that. Today was 79 degrees with cloud coverage so it was pretty nice!

It was a relatively cool morning. Actually ran 3 times this morning, a warmup of about .75(endomondo was only on for .64 of it), my 5k race(let's be honest 6 participants does not a race make) official time 32:50, and 3.21 miles of long slow run pace(approximately 12 minute miles) for total distance of 6.97 mile this morning per endomondo.
Race report 72 degrees and 90% humidity for start @ 0900. Race is a double loop around a local park, corners/turns well marked. I was the only male running and the youngest participant. Came in 2 out of 5, first overall ran it in the 27 minute range. Supportive volunteers and other runners, have run other races with the 1st place before and she is killer, but good time had by all and a slice of pizza afterwords. After about a 15 minute break went out for the 3rd run of the day and enjoyed myself, sticking to the shaded paths of the park. Now its off to shower and grocery store, friends coming for dinner.
@MobyCarp hope the ankle os feeling well

10km Roots and Ruts 2018 last night.
Chip Time 1:15:08:66. 59/120 .That was fun, so much better than last weekend and this was on a much tougher course.
Intentionally started out in the back 1/3 of the pack as my history on this event was to be to close to the front and the Speed Demons would drag me out and I would self destruct by 6 km. Just cruised along for the first km then once we were truly in the trees on rough trail started to build and overtake. Hit a pack at 4km on a very narrow twisty mud bog section that held me back for a while which allowed me to do a mini rest/recovery. My friend Olive caught up to us at this point - the first time she has ever accomplished that. I Called back to her to stay with me - use me as a pace lead and she did. Then we got by the pack. Dragged her around the course - passing other athlete's at opportune points. km 6-7 was back down to gnarly single track ( photo below in spoiler ) so we caught up to the people in front with no passing chances. Km 7 out of the trees and past the aid station and 8-10 of the pack pulled over and we kept charging. A couple from the pack were still in front with us. Let them lead/pace for a while then hit open trail and took off telling them it was my turn to pull the pace. Caught one more athlete at km 9 and them clear push to the finish. 200m sprint finish - my Garmin showed a 3:42/km for this which I have a hard time believing. Dragged my friend to a PB and a 3rd Ladies AG Podium- her first podium. She had a bad case of runners high.
A few Photo's showing the Trail Conditions and the Creek valley we crossed a few times.
Can you spot the runner in this Gnarly Trail photo below - well hidden by the trees.
After changing into dry gear stayed for the medals as I had lots of friends on the podium.
Then the dreaded 230km drive home in the dark - mating season for Deer, Elk and Moose so lots of wildlife on the move with one thing on their mind.
Rather stiff and sore this morning = a good effort.15 -

@workaholic_nurse 6 participants? Wow, that must be a little strange. Congrats on your 2nd place finish!
@juliet3455 What a wonderful adventure course. Love all the photos. Well done!
I completed week 5 in the C25K today, with 20 mins continuous running. It was raining, so I decided to clean the bathrooms and see if it let up. That worked and the rain turned from a downpour into a gentle shower.
I did it: 20 mins run, 5 mins walk, and another 5 min run to make 30 mins. I felt slower than usual. I've been trying to eat more fruits and veggies, and I am all bloat. I even seem to have gas trapped around my shoulder blade, which is extremely painful. Maybe some people aren't meant to eat so many veggies? But the run helped.
Now, I'm going to celebrate with a visit to MEC for some sporty long-sleeves and then a craft brewery with my husband and son for a flight.

Forgot to charge my watch last night. So yes, you can so a slow as molasses 5K on only 13 % battery on a Garmin 935. So, I started my watch @ the beginning of the race, hear the little beep, felt the vibration, start running...go for a while...then, about 1/4 mile I look down....and see all zeros! What?! Promptly start it & continue on. Once I crossed the finish line, I kept walking so the end on my watch says 3.1 as well. Crazy morning!
But not too bad of a time, considering I was knocked out with one of the worst migraines I've had in a while, yesterday was really the 1st day & was able to open my eyes & go outside all week!
