I liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive. Okay, so I've been vacant the past couple of weeks because of a project I've been working on. I finally finished it up last night. WOOHOO. 12 hour work days are brutal, but I'm so thankful this month-long project is over, and I have a mini vacation to re-coup some time back.
I've been a literal zombie with waking up @ 5AM, running, and then straight to work until the late hours of the night - repeat for the last 3 weeks. I honestly don't know how I've managed to muster enough energy to do the running other than sheer will power, and I don't even drink coffee. HAHA. People think I'm nuts since I don't drink any type of caffeine, they just squint at me skeptically and say, "How do you function?"
Anyways - I've reached my goal for the month of September, and I've got 33 miles scheduled next week. So, I might actually break the 100 mile barrier for the month. That would be something!
Not sure what's been happening in this thread, but a lot of constructive chatter! I congratulate all those who have had races and already reached their goal for the month of September! Wishing everyone the very best, and I will try and go back and start catching up on the topics and discussions that have been happening in this thread.10 -

A small amount of "why am I doing this to myself" and a large amount of "OMG, I just ran 20 miles." Now trying to peel myself off the couch so I can go eat all the food. I have a friend in town so I'm going out to lunch - meaning my nap is going to have to wait. But a big burger and beer are calling my name.
YAY!!!! WELL DONE!!!

workaholic_nurse wrote: »It was a relatively cool morning. Actually ran 3 times this morning, a warmup of about .75(endomondo was only on for .64 of it), my 5k race(let's be honest 6 participants does not a race make) official time 32:50, and 3.21 miles of long slow run pace(approximately 12 minute miles) for total distance of 6.97 mile this morning per endomondo.
Race report 72 degrees and 90% humidity for start @ 0900. Race is a double loop around a local park, corners/turns well marked. I was the only male running and the youngest participant. Came in 2 out of 5, first overall ran it in the 27 minute range. Supportive volunteers and other runners, have run other races with the 1st place before and she is killer, but good time had by all and a slice of pizza afterwords. After about a 15 minute break went out for the 3rd run of the day and enjoyed myself, sticking to the shaded paths of the park. Now its off to shower and grocery store, friends coming for dinner.
6 person race with support and volunteers? That really cool!3 -

Ha! Keep that up and soon you will running the insane distances of @JessicaMcB !

I did it: 20 mins run, 5 mins walk, and another 5 min run to make 30 mins. I felt slower than usual. I've been trying to eat more fruits and veggies, and I am all bloat. I even seem to have gas trapped around my shoulder blade, which is extremely painful. Maybe some people aren't meant to eat so many veggies? But the run helped.
Now, I'm going to celebrate with a visit to MEC for some sporty long-sleeves and then a craft brewery with my husband and son for a flight.
W00T!! Well done!!

RACE REPORT:
Race Report!
The race I forgot I registered for! Well, fortunately, someone asked me about it, and I remembered! I have not been training with a target of 5k race condition at all, not that I would have had I remembered, but at least I have a good excuse.
The race start was at 10am and only a 20-minute drive from my house. The weather was close to perfect (mid-fifties, cloudy skies, and a light breeze). The race was on a runway. Literally, the same concrete planes take off and land on, so pretty darn flat. My Garmin read 49 feet of elevation change, but I am skeptical of that measurement. There was no perceivable grade at all.
If ever there was a perfect race for a PR, this was it.
We arrived way early, but the first lot was already closed. So, we had to park in the overflow and take a shuttle. Annoying as there was no bag check. That meant everything we got, we carried with us on the run. So, at check-in, we only took the shirt and bib. Afterwards my wife grabbed the free towel, but we left all the rest of the freebies behind.
We unintentionally line up for the race an hour early by simple virtue of gathering with runners we knew in a spot that happened to be about a third of the way back from the starting line. About 10 minutes before the started I moved up to the front of the pack, as is my new tradition. My wife moved further back, and as it turns out way too far back. More on that later.
The air horn goes off to start the race, without a countdown! Ah well, nothing to do it but run. I take off way too fast, on purpose. By the first quarter mile, I am running in the mid 6’s for pace which I knew was too fast for me. I do this on purpose to clear the starting area quickly and not be stuck fighting the mob. By the first quarter mile, I am working on slowing down to race pace. This plan has gotten me more PRs than anything else I have tried.
The fastest pacer was 7:30 and I made it my goal to beat him across the line.
Took the first bend and settled back into what I thought would be my race pace for the day. Check my watch, 7:50! No good. I slip to the outside and pick up pace moving up in the pack.
As I was moving up the pack I came upon a young girl. She could not have been more than four foot tall, so not sure how old that makes her, but her bright pink tank top said “KEEP UP” on the back. Heh. I suspected right then and there she was likely to beat me, but I inched past her.
Clear one mile, my pace is 7:22. Not bad, but still risking the 7:30 pacer catching me, so I try to pick up some speed again.
A mile in and a half is the next turn (really the only real turn in the u-shaped course). Big wide turn, I cut it the inside and run the line through, passing a couple more people.
Clear the turn and the water station is ahead. I normally do not take water on a 5k but my mouth was dry enough at this point I decided to risk it. I grabbed a cup, threw the water at my face in an attempt to drink at full pace, and drop the cup in the can. Surprising felt much better, but doubt I got more than 2 ozs in me. Placebo effect maybe, do not really care, it worked.
Ahead I see the 3 mile marker and the final bend of the course. I try to put on a bit more speed, but I was apparently already at my limit because that started to bring on dry heaves. Decided I did not care and kept pushing.
10 or so strides form the finish line, guess who shows up to pass me? Yep. The little girl in the pink shirt that said “Keep up” – well I tried! I really did! Then not two strides from the line one more guy passed me. At this point, I did not care. I was in full “do not puke on the volunteers” mode. Grabbed my medal and went off to one side to recover.
Once I was again master of my stomach, I grabbed a banana and attempted to head back out to run in with my wife. Was stopped by a nice man with a gun. Guess they are not big on people wandering around the airport.
My wife came in and beat the 11:00 minute pacer. This was awesome! First off, she started behind the 13-minute pacer, so had a ton of ground to make up. Second off, she is in PT for knee and hip issues and has not broken 14 minutes in training runs in months due to her injuries. Very proud of her!
Final official results:
22:39 chip time, 7:18 chip pace, 22:44 gun time
2nd for Men 40-45
35th for all men
42nd over all
421 male finishers
453 female finishers
874 total finishers
Run Keeper says it is my second fasted 5k. I have over a decade of data on it so I will have to dig back and see what race could have been faster. I suspect it was the Cranberry Cup which was short (like 2.9 miles) and that this really is my fastest. I surely could not have run this one any faster. My plan was perfectly executed, and I left it all on the course.
The only thing I could have done differently would to have done speed work in training. But, I am not really big on sticking to training plans so I will take what I got.

@shanaber - when @rusgolden first told me about that Garmin race, the medal was a SPINNING tornado!!!! I really wanted that bugger - but my schedule didn't cooperate. Last year I missed the ruby slippers too. So this year I'm keeping that weekend open so I can jump on it if the medal is that good again! I have a "shrine" where I hang all my medals and then a big map that I insert a pushpin every city I run. It all hangs in our basement kind of out of the way so it doesn't look too obnoxious. Some people stop and ask - others are completely turned off. That's OK. It's my own little corner.
@katharmonic - congrats on the 20 miles! That is AWESOME - go eat all the food you want!
I was planning on an easy 3 miles this morning, and 10 tomorrow. But my left heel is bothering me ever so slightly and since I don't want a repeat of PF, I decided to rest again today. Beautiful weather though - perfect for running.
I'm reading Deena Kastor's book "Let Your Mind Run" and finding it very insightful and encouraging. Has anyone else read it?

Such beautiful weather for my long run today! I ran 11 miles (about half of them with the running group). Temp was about 20 degrees F cooler than it has been... 53F and felt like 48F with a low dew point as well. I haven't had a chance to go through the thread yet today, but have seen several with great accomplishments and races today!

Morning all. I'm looking at wireless headphones. I currently have a cheap pair with the receiver about 2-3 inches below the rt ear. It drives me nuts bouncing as I run. So I'm looking for some sports ones and OMG the variety!
I'm looking for ones that have over ear clips for stability (I like that style) with the cable coming out the back of the clip - i find that eliminates tug on the earpiece itself.
I've seen some with the receivers on the earpiece but they look heavy to me. I've also seen "collared" versions, with a flexible collar that sits around your neck, and short cables leading to the ear pieces.
I'm on a tight budget for these and don't really care about the quality of the audio. Who's tried what and what works for you.
My biggest annoyance when running is bounce causing tugging on the earpieces.1 -

9/22 – 8.60 easy
September running total to date – 117.66
Nominal September mileage goal: 165 miles
Real Goals: Run Oak Tree well, winning my age group and finishing healthy. Build base/train toward Wineglass, running PG XC #1 so as not to be injured, and running the USATF Masters XC Championship so as not to be injured. Run Wineglass easy, finishing healthy for a good recovery in October.
Today's notes – No pace groups today, so I slept in. Got up, and the ankle felt perfectly normal when I jogged up and down the hall as the eggs cooked. Got out for a run about noon, and chose an easy route. The idea was 8 to 10 miles, and practice keeping it easy. I want to survive Wineglass well. Setting a PR is not necessary, and if it means a hard recovery that would be counterproductive.
Fall temperatures are here today. It was 57º F (14º C) when I set out, with a dew point of 48º F. Haven't seen that low a dew point in quite a while. I wore a singlet, because my porch thermometer report 62º; but at first I was cool. And even late in the run, a breeze made me think I could have been more comfortable in a tee. Oh, well.
Brought it in at an average pace of 7:50 per mile, with mile splits ranging from 7:39 to 8:02. I'm pleased that I was able to back off and not challenge the two hills late in the run; that shows in a heart rate that never got above Zone 2 and spent most of the run in Zone 1. Average HR 124, max HR 142.
This was a good confidence builder for me after the scare with my ankle. I think the two rest days did what I needed them to do. And if we get low humidity like this tomorrow, it's going to be a really fast field running cross country.

I have used both SoundPeats and Earteana, but neither have an over the ear, although the SoundPeats have optional attachments for over the ear. Both of them are less than $50. The Earteana ear buds are independent buds and can be used one at a time if you wish and I've not had issues with them falling out or having sweat/rain cause any issues with either brand.1 -

I use the Plantronics BackBeat ($50 on Amazon.com. I have used headphone costing a couple hundred dollars, and ones that cost $10. These are the only ones that worked out for me. The sound quality will not please an audiophile, but it is good enough for me. They are truly waterproof (unlike by far most that are only actually splash proof), light, and stay in place.
Check them out is my advice.2 -

Well, yesterday was a horrible nightmare. Went for my physio visit at 10am. He did abut more work than normal on my hip and my neck. All was fine during the visit. Got in the car to go for groceries and my back started cramping up. I thought better go home and rest it but it kept going only on one side all the way to my neck. Got home took a shower and I got a full blown headache so bad I had to get into bed.
the headache kept getting worse. Never had that much pain. So I reached for my phone to call for an ambulance but noticed I don’t have my phone close by. By then there was no way of getting out of bed. It was horrific pain and getting worse, next thing I knew I woke up at 1800-6pm. Better with the headache and got up slowly not to trigger anything.
From 11-6 that’s more than 8 hours passed out. Scary.
Moving/testing all my limbs using a mirror checking if I can move my face I was relieved so definitely need to tell physiotherapist on Monday. What the he’ll happened?
On the good note went for a hike this morning with my ex 82 year old neighbour who actually does better than me is always ahead but we always have a great time.
Walking in the woods was like I was deflating from what happened yesterday.
Took photos one is her hand feeding the birds. She is a beautiful person even the birds like her.
@Contrary_MaryM Happy Anniversary wishing you many more happy years.
@Elise4270 we are definitely seeing crazy weather. We had tough storm go through yesterday in the morning I heard the wind through things of the window but couldn’t get out of bed. But since I passed out didn’t hear anything else. But you can see the damage outside and neighbours talk this morning. Makes you wonder how passed out was I?
@sarahthes it’s unfortunate your going through snow already. Our temperatures dropped here too after yesterday storm but not dramatic yet. Although we are warned of a hard winter coming for us here. Hopefully they are wrong. And it smooths out for you guys too.
@MegaMooseEsq yes, that would be interesting about comparing those two methods. It’s amazing finally how medicine is advancing with technology.
@noblsheep have a safe and good trip.
@Orphia Happy 3 year Runnng. Amazing photos!

Safety: I've had 2 incidents running where I was in danger from other humans. Both happened in broad daylight, near busy roads in what seemed like perfectly safe neighborhoods. In one case there were pedestrians around (no one close enough to see what happened), and the other time my husband "just happened" to have gotten the feeling he should drive out and get me. So I do take precautions, but understand that you just can't predict or prevent everything that could potentially happen.
Pet leashes: speaking from personal experience, a harness didn't work on a guinea pig! Did help me meet the neighbors, though.
Eye glasses: we order online as well. The company at one point sent us a little ruler so you could measure your own PD, but I think there was a printable version, too. Our eye doctor checked the glasses we had bought online and said they were fine. They seemed accustomed to people doing it that way. Zenni optical even ships to us in Poland, which is a plus.
Hot dogs: I thought of y'all on my way to physical therapy yesterday... they typically do hot dogs here in a round bun with a hole in it. The hole doesn't go the whole way through, so you can squirt your condiments of choice inside and then insert the hot dog. I've never seen a double dog bun before, though. *edited to add picture*
Running: haven't done any BUT when I woke up today, my leg did not hurt! One more therapy week then we'll see how it's going.7 -
@Orphia great run! Happy runniversary and enjoy your taper.
@juliet3455 Nice race and how great that you got your friend to a personal best. Love the photo at the finish.
Thank you @RunRachelleRun and congrats on your accomplishment of 20 minutes continuous running. Hope you enjoyed your beer - I know I did!
@dreamer12151 good job on your 5k and glad your Garmin lasted the distance.
@RunnerGrrrl7 good job on meeting your goal - go for 100!
Thank you @PastorVincent. Congratulations on your nearly forgotten 5k, that you still went out and killed. LOL at the girl's "KEEP UP" shirt. I love that. Well done to your wife as well!
Thank you @biketheworld and @Scott6255 as well!
@MobyCarp glad your ankle felt good today. Hope it does well for the XC tomorrow and for Wineglass.
@travelling_lots oh my gosh, that sounds so scary. I hope you are ok.
Here's my question for the group - 6:19 pm is a little too early to go to bed for the night, right? I should wait until at least 6:30?9 -
I am signing up for a Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5k that I told my friend I would run with her... just looked at the course map. Love the park it is in but oh my goodness those are some hills squeezed into 3 miles!

@PastorVincent - nice race!
@travelling_lots - I can’t imagine how scary that was for you and glad it turned out well
@Avidkeo - I also have the Plantronics Backbeats. Had them for close to a year and really like how long they stay charged for. Also, still can hear the sound of cars coming up with both headphones in.
I had two days in a row of rest unplanned. I had a doctors appointment on Thurs afternoon and I was due for my tetanus shot. Since I was doing that anyway and the flu shots were out I did that as well. My plan was to run after my daughter’s soccer game, but between the rain and the soreness I didn’t go. It was even more sore yesterday, so one became two. Today, was much better so after getting home from a couple soccer games did a nice long run. My husband showed me a new route through town that was a loop vs. an out and back that I was planning. It was a great run! I’m planning to make up the missed run from Thurs tomorrow afternoon.

@katharmonic - 20 miles!! Wow! Great job! I bet that burger and brew really hit the spot! I guess what time you go to bed would depend on what time you intend to get up to run in the morning 🤣
@juliet3455 - awesome race report and great job pacing your friend to a PR and an AG podium spot!
@PastorVincent - great job on the race and competing with the little girl! Love her shirt too! Also Big Congratulations to Mrs PastorVincent too!
@biketheworld and @rusgolden - Those medals are so awesome! I will be anxious to see what it is this year and if I can convince my DH that we need a road trip to Kansas so I can race there
@biketheworld - I have lots of medals not yet up on a rack (soon though) but have primarily raced pretty close to home or to my daughter's home in Seattle - not enough variety to warrant a map!
@polskagirl01 - I cracked up at your picture - not because of the hot dogs but because you have CircleK there selling food and gas!
@travelling_lots - hope you are doing ok now!
@mobycarp - so glad your ankle is better! Have a great race tomorrow!
@Avidkeo - I have Anker Soundbuds that I got on Amazon for $20 that I really like. The music is adequate for my needs and their customer service is amazing. They have an 18 month warranty which I have never seen before. My first pair stopped working and within days (literally 2) of my submitting the issue, I had a new pair delivered. They do have the piece that goes over/behind your ear but the wire still comes from the earbud piece. They came with a slider that you attach to the cord to make it tighter behind your neck as well as a clip to clip it to your shirt (or sports bra). I find the clip really makes a difference in having the cord and receiver/controls not bounce around. I also have more expensive Jaybirds that I really like as well (loved the original, new ones are more temperamental) but also had an issue with them and their customer service took weeks to respond... it was an interesting comparison.
I got my long run in today. Not the 10 I had set in my head but I am happy with what I completed. The first 4 were really hard and my legs felt like dead logs. I had some SKratch chews at mile 2 and again at mile 4 which really helped. I know I didn't eat enough yesterday and it showed today. The rest of the run was actually great although the sun got really hot towards the end. I am really hoping October brings us some cooler weather!

I am not feeling well tonight. I have been busy most of the day prepping for hubby to come home tomorrow (he has been overseas for work for the last 3 months AND tomorrow is his birthday), and this evening I feel super lethargic with somewhat of a stomachache. I got in 2 miles of my planned 4 tonight. I hope to get in 6-7 in the morning.11 -

I normally do not use a bun at all actually, but trying to eat up the last of these crummy GF buns before have to toss them out. There are ok GF buns. This is not one of them.5 -

When i was a kid i only ate the bun with chili and onions, no dog. I stil like them thataway. I did GF for a while during an elimination diet. Udi's was my go to, but its 7$ a package.
Loved the wife btw! Tell her "rock on!"4 -

Yeah, Udi's is the best I have found. I got out of the habit of having a bun back when I was doing Atkins though and never really got it back.1 -
I have a question.
Dh is marathon training.
1) ithink he should have cut back this week on his long run even though his plan said 12-16 miles, (because hes willy-nilly on the weekly runs) i suggested 10-12.. he ran 16-17, exhausted yet determined to prove his ability, he ran/walked another 8. So 24-25 miles today, in the rain on hills. And the last 2 weekends, hes run further than hes accustomed to, by 10+ miles easlily.
2) he said it was hard, but felt okay.. So I'm checking his stats, unfortunately his Garmin isnt swanky enough to give him a lactate threshold value, so i look at his time in zone. 86% of his run (the 16+ miles) was in zone 5. Training effect is obviously 5.0
3) His pace was slower (9-10, rather than 8-9) than usual dispite the cooler temps. But he did run hills
Why was it hard? Why was his HR so high during this run?
I said (naggingly) you should have cut back and you ran to hard today. And it looks like maybe your not recovered, dispite having 5 days off. So theres a question of de-training too. He is like most men, wont listen when i say run daily, even if it is 1-3 miles, cut back... dont eat ketchup haha! Jk Vincent! Gottcha! Another obvious reason could be dehydration, which i havent broached. I know he planted water.. he did take GU.2 -

Short answer - Tell him to grab a reliable plan and stick with it.
Seriously, he is going to get hurt doing that.3
