3.34 windy miles running to the Lake Hartwell Dam(GA side). Fairly flat and had a headwind the whole way out(bonus tailwind on the way back) and it looks like the hills and other runs have paid off as I hit a new PR for a 5k @ 32:48, a 2:44 improvement.🤯 32.08/60.5, per endomondo, at the halfway point for the month.
Very nice time @garygse .11 -

I have to. If I actually realize I am running and think about it, I would not make it 1/2 a mile. I do not mention it often, and perhaps that is a disservice to others, but every step I take is a struggle. I have to take my mind out of the activity to a place where there is no pain in order to keep going. I can run without headphones, I do it for most races, but my head is still not in my body for most of it.
We all face our own set of challenges, this is just how I defeat mine. It is not perfect, but it is me.
I continue to be amazed that you have kept it up. I genuinely don’t think I could if I didn’t love it.RunsOnEspresso wrote: »PastorVincent wrote: »quilteryoyo wrote: »@PastorVincent I can't ever see myself getting so lost in a run that I didn't even realize where I was going. Running is the only time my mind is silent. I've gotten lost in unfamiliar places before because my mind finally quiets and I kind of meditate. But I have to listen to a podcast or music because I can't stand listening to my breathing. It puts me back into the present and I don't get the brain shut off.
And my daily "nature" is cars. Not exactly what I want to listen to.
This is me, too. I’ve tried to have conversations right after running and I have to really focus to get my head back from that zone. It’s one of the top reasons I love running.2 -
@PastorVincent Thanks for being honest. It helps to know that not everyone finds running easy, mentally. Another reason I don't listen to music, or anything else, is that all of the races I have run in the past (not many) have banned headsets. If I do all of my practice runs with a distraction and then don't have that for the run, I don't think I could do it. Plus, when I tried (when I started running the first time about 10 years ago) the headsets never lasted very long - the cords would break or I'd get tangled in them. I'm sure there are much better things out there these days. I may find I need that once I start running longer distances. Who knows what the future holds?
Today, my training plan called for a 15 - 20 minute run. I wasn't feeling it at all, so only did 15 minutes at a slower pace - on the treadmill. Adding the warm up and cool down walk, I did a total of 1.6 miles in 24:15 minutes. (RE conversation above: I do have to watch TV or listen to music when I run on the treadmill!)

Sept 15, West Cancer Fight On 5k
I hope everyone else had as great a run day as I did! One of my goals was to be competitive in my age group before December, not win or even place mind you, just be maybe in the top 20 with a plausible chance at being mistaken for someone who might make the podium. Today's race had six AG medals per group and I was 10 out of 66 in my AG! 69 out of 800 something total finishers. So that made me happy. And my husband was 8 out of 25, which is good for him, since he runs with me and men in his AG are faster than women in mine. No PR, but this is a long course - about 3.35 according to my GPS, which tallies with some guys who were running alongside us and said something when their watches hit 3.1 and the finish was still a ways off. So even though our official chip time was only 31:26 our pace was very good for me and I'm happy with my performance.
I also finally beat my arch-nemesis, Stroller Lady! The very first 5k I was ever in (in fact it was this same race, a year ago) before I was even able to run a full 5k, I saw a lady ahead of me running with a stroller and said, I may not be fast, but surely at least I can catch that stroller. Nope. The stroller lady pulled away and rapidly disappeared into the distance. After the third race in which she soundly defeated me, I looked up her race number to find out who she was, and learned she's a running coach who offers classes in running with a stroller. Totally out of my league. That made me feel a little better about eating her dust, but I still felt miffed at being beaten every time by somebody who was too young to walk! Well, today I finally passed the stroller. Yay! And the most hilarious thing happened when I passed her. Her baby, who must be a little more than a year old now, piped up in the tiniest baby voice, "Left - passing on the left..." She runs with this baby so often that the baby has picked up race lingo the same way other babies learn to say "Mama," or "No!"
This is a large charity race with a lot of casual people and walkers, and as usual the announcer asked walkers to start at the back, and as usual they didn't. But what was not usual was that he said something about it, as we moved off, "Oh, thank you so much walkers for lining up at the front, great job there. Oh, brilliant, your dog just tripped a runner. See, that's why the rules state dogs are not allowed on the course." I wanted to run back and give him a big hug! My hero! We started well towards the front, and were easily half a mile down the road before we successfully passed most of the walkers, and then we started to pass the inexperienced people who had gone out too fast and had to slow to a walk. And then on the final turn, our course merged with the one mile Survivor's Walk. So we spent most of the race dodging people. We ended up alongside a young man who seemed a regular runner of that course, since he kept using the same course strategy we had figured on from running it twice before. He was just slightly slower than we were, and I think it annoyed him to be passed by older people, because every time we started to pull away he would redouble his effort and you could see him starting to wheeze and turn purple. Finally he ran himself to a frazzle and dropped behind. It was pretty warm - about 80 with a dewpoint about 70 at 8:30 am race start - not too bad compared to what we've been used to, which probably gave us an advantage since I doubt most of the other people out there have been loony enough to train in the afternoon heat.
Last year when my husband and I ran this, we were about halfway though c25k and thought we were doing great because we ran a whole 8 minute stretch. Our time was 44 something. Also, we were both fat. This is me then versus me after a year of running:
After the race there was a full breakfast, live music from a bluegrass band, and lots of vendors with swag. The most unusual swag was a foam rubber prostate given out by the prostate cancer center. I guess it's good for raising awareness of the need for prostate screening, but then what are you supposed to DO with it? We gave ours to the cat, and he's chasing it around the floor. My favorite thing about the band was that they played "Man of Constant Sorrow" and a little boy in the audience started doing the hillbilly dance from "O Brother Where Art Thou?" We ate breakfast with a couple about our own age, who as it turns out are basically us from last year. She has recently had cancer surgery (last year we were two weeks out from my husband's surgery) and they walked most of the way, because they only just started running. We assured them that if they kept it up, they would get better and better. Last year the family we sat next to inspired us with the same sort of talk and it felt good to pass it forward.
They handed out bells to all the cancer survivors, and following the music they called up the survivors for a group picture and mass bell ringing. That's my husband in the blue shirt kneeling in front.
And this is us at the photo booth
The other thing that's changed a lot since last year is that 5k isn't really enough distance for us now, so after the ceremonies we took a long walk around the park. We noticed that the couple walking in front of us were the AG winner for my husband's group and the 2nd place from mine. It feels GREAT to need to walk more after 5k, whereas last year we were worried our tired legs would make it back to the parking lot!24 -
Also, that puts me at goal for the month! I picked a modest 31 miles because my foot was bothering me. It seems fine now, so on to stretch goal of 50 miles!

@rheddmobile Great race report and well done to both you & your husband!
@AlphaHowls Congrats on an awesome race result!4 -
@rheddmobile Love your post! Laughed at the "stroller lady." My first race, when I was running 10 years ago, my goal was to beat the 80 year old lady who was ahead of me (I was 49ish at the time). I did by about 3 sec. It felt good, but I also felt a little guilty. LOL I talked to her over the course of a few races and she had been an avid runner all of her life - something I never was.7

September, she'll remember (to run)So i realized we did the SPAM virtual run ladt October and went looking to sign up for it again and found this: https://www.aimatmelanoma.org/get-involved/aim-for-the-cure-walks/
@skippygirlsmom did you know? Love it!
I'm so glad they made the "cover!" I didn't organize a S.P.A.M. run this year....I'm in that ostrich stage of grief.....
No worries of course. I can imagine your grief.
Alex is lost to alcohol and mental illness (bipolar diagnosis), no idea if he'll ever come out of it. I know its not the same thing, but I've lost him. Ive lost count of how many times hes tired to kill himself, 5 maybe 6. Hes not who he once was in my life. I'm not good at relationships anyway, so the whole thing just pushes me further in to antisocial behavior/attachment disorder type crap. Further away from people i can get the better. I get cynical. (Sure doesnt help ive been running with his old mp3 player. When days of innocence prevailed). Ugh enough about my woes. ((Hugs))
We're doing the Virtual 26.2 hour relay for Dennis and i noticed it fell on the same day i did the spam for Steve. So I'll definitely have him and you in my thoughts too.
We could continue it and make October 14th or second weekend in October, our fallen runners/lost love ones rememberance runs days. A "Run Your Heart Out" run. What troubles your heart, let your legs take far away.
I love your idea above in bold!
@katharmonic - You are a rockstar! Like @Elise4270 I am way down the list 😳
@sarahthes - can't believe the weather you all are getting already!
@AlphaHowls - congratulations on a great race and AG place!
@rheddmobile - Congratulations to both you and your husband! That announcer would get my love too!4 -
I took an extra rest day yesterday after being so sore from my training workout Thursday evening. Too much legs again on top of all the leg work on Tuesday. Not sure what the trainer was thinking but my legs were pretty unhappy yesterday. They felt better today when I got up but when I started my run my glutes were not happy to the point that I thought I might not be able to get in a long run. Fortunately they loosened up after the 1st couple of miles and I ended up with a pretty great long run. I did stop and stretch out my calves a couple of times which helped too. It got really hot but the humidity was way down and I had to have my husband come and get Hobbes the Vizsla when he laid down in the dirt and just looked at me. My husband also brought me a cold bottle of water which was so was awesome! I went on to finish an additional 5 miles and then jumped in the pool for a cool down swim.
For all of you who have those lovely green, shady trails and places to run this is my view. The river is completely dry now so of course the birds have all relocated to where ever they go.

Second Saturday in a row being grounded from running. Did my physio exercises last night and now I have more pain than yesterday! I am going to assume that means it's working.
Although given the weather I kind of don't want to run right now anyway. I don't mind warm rain. I don't mind snow and super cold. It's the in between sleet that I'm not a fan of!
I'm on the third Saturday of no run! Just over two weeks total.
I am back to walking my normal steps (over 15,000) and at a normal pace so progress. Did try yoga gain Friday and am not feeling any worse (woohoo). Doing my stretches.
Tomorrow i may to a very light test (as in 30-60 seconds run, 30-60 seconds walk for 1-3 reps. I am a little scared to try and fail. But I guess as long as I don't overdue it, it won't cause any/much delay.
I am deciding what to do about my race next weekend. OBVIOUSLY I won't be running, but debating if I go to walk the 5k. If I start feeling too "poor me" I will have the context of the families the race is supporting (soldiers) to put it all in a bigger perspective (hey, I'm done pretty good all things considered!) I could possibly walk the 10k. both would be a bad idea.

@AlphaHowls Congrats on the AG placement! I can just about run two miles at 9 minutes, you can run 13 of them! Me and my beat up knees have no aspirations to run halfs, but I aspire to kick *kitten* like you!4

@rheddmobile Great race report and well done!
@AlphaHowls Congrats. You are a super star.
@katharmonic very impressive!3 -
@HonuNui @Elise4270
I feel you. Not a child. But i lost my husband to mental illness. He was sober for 5 years. He fell off the wagon for a few months, got dirty drugs, and od'ed. He left behind a 14 year old daughter, and a younger brother and sister and his parents. I felt prepared because I'd gone to al anon for years.
I try and do something honorific on our wedding anniversary, his day of passing, and his birthday. I'd be honored to join you guys if you choose to do something11 -

If it was me, I would go do what I could for the 5k. The mental game matters and finishing a race matters emotionally more than physically.
But I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. So YMMV and all that.5
