October 2018 Monthly Running Challenge

Hello all!
Well, I am brand new to this challenge, I'm not a runner but I love to walk and I could walk for miles while listening to my playlists. I do love to challenge myself, basically have to keep my body moving. I am a 70 year old great grandmother who does boot camp for an hour every M-W-F beginning at 5:30 a.m. My husband and I are members at a gym and I will workout with him from time to time. I love to golf and I walk 18 holes 2 days/week weather permitting. I have no idea where to start with a goal so I will shoot for 25 miles and go from there next month.
Looking forward to making some great strides with this challenge.12 -

My 8 year old self would wear whatever costume Mom was willing to provide, in order to go door to door and get as much candy as possible. I don't even remember what those costumes were when I was a kid, but I remember the candy.
Now, I don't do costumes for Halloween because they're too much effort. I think it would be cool to have a good devil costume, or perhaps Ming the Merciless; but realistically, I thinks it's nicer to not have to go shopping for costumes or stuff to make costumes.
I will buy a small bag of some type of candy that I don't mind eating one fun sized package at a time over 2 or 3 months. I anticipate zero trick-or-treaters, same as recent years; but I want to have something in case I get a handful of them.
This reminds me that I've been meaning to ask about running in cold weather gear - I'm not as concerned about keeping warm as I am about falling (or being so tense about falling that I might as well have fallen). Have you ever run in winter spikes (I've seen these recommended a few times)? Have you had any issues with your knees/legs/hips running with them? What do you do if you have them but don't need them? Need them but don't have them? Do outdoor races usually de-ice the course? Do you use your normal shoes or are there better winter shoes?
We don't get much snow here but we did get ice for several weeks off and on. When it was icy I ran in my Brooks Cascadias which were very safe feeling unless it was straight up glare ice - something like yak trax might have helped, but then you have to run in yak trax on the NOT icy parts too, so it just seemed the better part of valor to skip the one or two really bad days.
The race I ran in February did not de-ice, and the four bridges were very slick. Most runners crossed single file holding on to the side of the bridge. My husband and I had run that course before and knew that on the bridges, the packed ice closest to the rail was the slickest part, whereas the deeper unpacked snow in the middle was fine to run in as long as you didn't push off to the rear too much - you have to sort of stomp. So that's what we did, stomped by a whole bunch of seasoned runners and got a PR.
I bought yak trak three years ago, and have yet to need them. So there is that
A winter without ice caked on the sidewalks around me would be a mild winter indeed! The city does keep the paved paths pretty clear, though, so I could plan my routes so I'm only walking on the sidewalks a couple of blocks at the beginning and end and stick the trax in a pocket/belt for the run itself. I forget that last winter I was running primarily on sidewalks whereas now I'm mostly on the paved paths.1 -

We hand ice and snow a plenty last year, but it always seemed by the time I got to run it either melted, or was cleared already. I live in a new town now, one not nearly as rich, so things might be much different this year. We will see!1 -
Moved to GA not to have to deal with ice/snow issues anymore. As @marisap2010 said layering is about the best thing here. Have some tights, a couple of longer sleeved shirts, and 2 running stocking caps (I alternate so they can dry out). I also have 3 thermal overs(1 UA, 1 Reebok and another ?) that seem to be all I ever need.

I'm in for 120 in October. I haven't hit my goal in several months, because life / kids' activities / work travel keeps getting in the way.

Anyone use Thorlos socks? I got a pair and I don't like them, too thick in the heel and toe. Anyone want them? They are unused, just tried one on, in my shoe. Thorlo 84N Running Socks size medium grey/navy0

As you can see from previous replies, experience and preference varies somewhat between runners.
I wear trail shoes for snowy winter roads. I've tried screw shoes, but many of my winter runs have 30% to 60% clear asphalt. The screws tend to come out when I run on clear asphalt. Replacing them is cheap, but if they come out on the first half of my run I don't have them for the second half of my run. With Yak Trax and variations of the stuff you linked, I am concerned that I would simply ruin them running on clear asphalt. I suspect they'd be fine for winter trail running, or if I could guarantee I would be running on snow or ice everywhere.
Races may plow snow, but most won't be able to de-ice. For snowy road races, the trail shoes have done well for me. They aren't a whole lot better than road shoes for icy surfaces.
The slickest conditions I've run in was for the USATF Masters Cross Country Championships in Bend, Oregon in February 2017. My age group ran 8K, 4 loops of 2K. We went up and down 100 feet twice on each loop. There had been an ice storm the day before, and it was quite slick and sloppy even though it was 42º F when we ran. The course was clearly marked by the two feet of snow everywhere except where we were supposed to run; volunteers cleared the snow with shovels, but couldn't do anything about the ice. On the advice of my team captain, we all bought half inch spikes to install in our shoes the evening before. I am proud to say I left no butt-prints on that course. Many other runners did.
With the experience from Bend, my thinking is that if I need to run on the roads after an ice storm, I should just put quarter inch spikes into my cross country shoes and run in them. Don't want 3/8 inch, because I know those are a bit annoying when I cross asphalt roads. (Note: Cross country shoes are commonly called "spikes," which I find leads to a bit of confusion if I have discuss the actual metal spikes as well as the shoes that they go in.)
But really, most of running on slick surfaces is balance, practice, and good eye-foot coordination. In this respect, it is not unlike trail running. You want to go slow enough, but not so slow that you mess up your form and cadence. There is a sweet spot where I can run with less risk of falling than if I were running much slower or much faster.4 -
Hi Group! I haven't been a part of the monthly running goal thread in years! I'm back at it, though. I better set a goal! I have a half marathon on October 28th. My running plan has me at 70 for the month, so I suppose that should be my goal. Man, that sounds like a ton. I also am doing the 80 day obsession workout program.
For the questions:
1. I stay accountable during these hard holidays by coaching others. It helps me stay true to what I preach!
2. If I were to dress up, my 8 year old self would have been a gymnast. I swear, I was a gymnast every Halloween for about 8 years!7 -

Today's run saw me start off with a 3-mile warm up, followed by a 9-mile tempo run, and then finishing up with several miles at cool down pace to bring me back to my starting point. The tempo section averaged out at a smidge under a 7:00 pace, and the return of the humidity made it a hard effort.
The surprising part though was my inability to get my heart rate up...try as I might, I couldn't get it to reach Z4. Or so I thought, as Garmin later pointed out:Gee, a whopping 3 seconds in Z4...
Tomorrow will be a slow recovery run with the group...and whenever I run with the group at slow paces, for some reason my HR goes through the roof. Here's betting I hit Z4 then.

Welcome Newbie and Returning Runners! There are too many of you to list individually! We are a crazy active group here so don't be shy and jump right into the discussions or ask questions!
@MegaMooseEsq - living in So CA we never have really cold, snow or ice so I don't have much experience to draw from. I did run a bit in the Baltimore area when my daughter was living there and they had a ton of snow. I wore leggings, smartwool socks, a long sleeve quarter zip (similar to what @mobycarp and @marisap2010 got this last weekend at the race), a vest, gloves and a warm hat. Oh and just my regular running shoes. I was very careful on the sidewalks although in her area they put salt or something on them but there were still slick places. The trail tended to be packed snow so it wasn't really slippery at all.
@cbos1215 - careful with this group... they may have you running instead of walking before you know it

So Mother Nature decided to be cruel today after several lovely cool mornings and jack up the heat back into the 90's I was going to run with Hobbes the Vizsla but it was so hot we walk/ran our usual warm up and I circled back home and dropped him off. It was already over 80F and I knew it was too hot for him. My plan was to run 30 mins take a 1 min walk break and run 30 mins home... ended up needing the bathroom even after stopping at home when I dropped Hobbes off. I have to figure out what is causing the almost daily stomach issues - so annoying! I got in 15 mins with Hobbes, 20 mins running, stop, 20 mins running, water break, 15 mins running home... This did seem to work out well for my hips. By the time I actually started running after dropping Hobbes off the stiffness was improving. I am hoping it will be cooler and my legs will like me again tomorrow.
I am taking Hobbes to Agility class tonight because he loves it so much, the vet has not said not to... this and next Monday will be his last 2 classes though for a while

Started off the month and the week with 5 miles in a misty rain that became a little heavier as I went. It didn't feel too bad and my pace was good. I had a frustrating day otherwise so it was kind of nice to get out there and run it off. Then strength training was indeed fairly leg focused but I actually felt a little better today.
And now I'm having a piece of pumpkin cheesecake. Because I need it.

For the questions:
1. I'm in the Tampa FL area, so winter weather is the best for running. I actually timed C25K so I would be running into the winter as the pool gets too cold for swimming. I have been swimming for exercise since I started working on my blood pressure. Every time I get in the pool I do at least 2 more laps than the previous session. I started out feeling like I would die after 4 laps. This past Saturday I did 50 laps without stopping and felt great. PROGRESS! Now that the pool is getting cooler, walking/running will take over to keep me moving until the pool warms up again!
2. I normally don't dress for Halloween. But my company has a yearly costume contest and my husband came up with a hilarious idea for me to enter the contest with. It's a secret, though. I have to make it, and I'm not confident in my ability/motivation to get it done... Maybe if I manage to pull it off I will post a picture of it after Halloween.8 -

October continues on with marathon training, weeks 14-17 I think. My goal is approximately 195 miles.
I have 2 races this month. I’m not planning on ‘racing’ either of them but rather enjoy themMonthly question.

The biggest challenge I face is wanting to eat all the yummy holiday food! I’m not sure I mitigate it at all because I always come out of the holidays feeling like I need a cleanse or something.

1 could be nerve irritation.
2 simplly go before you run, haha! That will/should/might improve with training. You'll learn to eat, not eat or have coffee or not, or plan a route close to an acceptable pit stop. Or sacrifice a sock in the woods. Just dont poop in your neighbors yard. Makes all of us runners look bad. 😏
Everyone is different. NSAID'S bother me. Occasionally I'll eat some that causes gi inflammation and i have problems. If you have ibs, talk to your doc. There are meds available.

Interval Monday. 12x (400m, 45sec rest, 400m, 90sec rest) with a 2 mile warmup and 2 mile cool down.
When I read 12 times, I almost changed it telling myself I need to taper for the race this Sunday. I’m too type-A and if that’s what the plan says then that’s what I have to do. I’d feel too weird breaking plan so it’s just easier if I suck it up and do it!

K, I almost didn’t go for a run tonight. Worked late, dark is early, and other dumb excuses. Then I decided I would be sad if I go tonight the and had nothing to report to y’all. So, I put on my hi vis yellow pullover, and went out for a mile. (That was my limit without tracking down my water belt. (I don’t go very far without water when I’m fat and out of shape.). I actually missed a corner, and made it 1.2. My pace is also better than it looks, I had a new deer in front of my house, and forgot I had already started the timer, until my run buzzer went off.
So:

Thank you all for the warm welcomes! I did c210k week 10 day 1 today on the treadmill(yuck), but it was raining so it had to be done. Anyways, 4 miles done!

Okay, a more serious answer to this...
Temps in the 50's F and up:- I do fine. T-shirt, shorts and normal socks
Temps in below 50's F depend highly on wind, moisture and etc.- I will need handwamers for sure. Fingers and toes are always an issue for me long before any other body part
- Same for toe warmers
- Probably wearing my Darn Tough wool socks
- Depending on how low I switch form tshirt to UA Cold Gear compression mock turtle top
- Same with the bottoms, I swap to UA Cold Gear fitted Storm pants
- If wind is an issue, my North Face Wind Barrier jacket goes on. It was WAY WAY expensive, but it stops the wind dead in its tracks
- If temps are really cold I add a..whats it called.. the hood that covers your face too. Makes you look like a ninja
- Wool hat for my ears if it is not cold enough for the hood thingy
If that cannot keep me warm, I just do not run. It will be my fingers and toes that defeat me first. At 40 degrees I already need the warmers. I have run in 0F, but only short runs as my toes get painfully cold.

Oh, I have a quarter zip pullover I can add to the mix too. I have found that LAYERS are better than single thick items. So that is what I do. I keep adding layers.0

Oct 1: 5 miles. Felt tired and sore going out - I tried some new accessory lifts for legs Saturday and could still feel them - but got going at a pretty decent clip after the first crappy mile and felt better at the finish than the start. It's back to being hot again, not hot hot but warmer than is comfortable for running, almost 90 with dewpoint about 65. Nice weather for a cool down walk though!
Still running at Shelby Farms while trailhead bathroom is being rebuilt on the Greenway. It's boring and hilly comparatively but has its own joys, like sleepy bison herds and majestic egrets. And frankly we need to run more hills, we were getting lazy on the level Greenway.
We ran through a high school track meet. They had barriers blocking off the course at the START which is the opposite of the way we always run, no markers at the other entrance. Fortunately they weren't actually running yet so we and several other runners just passed on our way. Between the tents / swag area for the high school, and the giant stage being erected for the upcoming weekend music fest, the park was pretty active!
Used the Runs Done seat covers to keep my sweaty self off the car seats and I like them.
Our new thing is finishing with a 400 meter surge. We had been doing about a tenth of a mile, easy enough to extend it to a quarter mile. I read an article somewhere which suggested this and it made sense to me. It always seems like we finish on a hill though, and my husband usually complains that he will actually literally die if he tries to sprint the hill. So far he is still among the living.

Feeling good to start the month so I'll bump up from 80 last month to 90 this month. Time was a bit of a struggle in September working full time and taking some classes. I think I've found some balance though and hope to have a great October and November before the bitter cold sets in.
1. Other than heading home for Christmas I don't really have a problem with diet related holiday stresses. The weather can be an issue in Chicago, but I bought a nice rowing machine at the beginning of the year and will look to use that more often when the temps dip below 30F.
2. I think my girlfriend has plans for us this Halloween. If not, perfect. If so, I have an old newspaper delivery bag I can throw over my shoulder.6 -

Tomorrow I'm going to do 90 second run/walk intervals with a local neighbourhood run club that has been trying to get off the ground. Sounds like there might be some new runners there so maybe someone as slow as me!
