Happy birthday, Heather.
Kate, so sorry about your SIL’s dementia. We got similar news this week. We don’t see Dave’s brother and his wife often, but the wife had to be put in a nursing home because her dementia got to be too much for him to handle. She is in her late seventies.
Dee, I’m so sorry about your broken rib and the setback it is causing.
Katla, MFP made me change my password again, too. I am running out of passwords!
Tammy, good luck with your hysterectomy and your focus on you. My hysterectomy was the best thing to ever happen to me, health wise. I felt so much better afterward.
Love the she cave and the new bathroom. Remodel pics are my favorite. I will post pics of my laundry room remodel as soon as I get the cabinet door fixed so it will stay closed.
Mary, good luck with the assessment business. I cannot conceive of being hit with a $20,000 bill I wasn’t expecting.
Viv, sorry about your aunt.
Thanks for the well wishes. I didn’t mean to mislead. My ankle is healed. The energy thing is more of a depression over weight gain and not being able to get enough sleep. Physical therapy won’t help and I’m not in pain. I do feel slightly better today. A beach vacation would help the most. Lol. I went to the gym today and did an upper body workout, then came home and walked 2 miles. I’ll be ok.9 -
drkatiebug- sounds like you are doing great with your exercise! I am glad your ankle is healed! I think I need a beach vacation as well can't wait to get back to Arizona!

I just typed a response to many and had a computer glitch that wiped it all out. I'm thinking of all of you & will try to post later.

Happy October 1st everyone, and thank you Barbie for keeping this thread up for all of us.
September goals were to exercise daily and log food and water. I maintained my weight, and exercised daily but I failed miserably on my logging. In October I'll try to be more consistent with logging my food.
The most fun thing happened this month. My DH and his best friend bought themselves Fitbit Surges. Long story short, they bought them at closeout and so they couldn't be returned and my husband wore his for a couple hours and didn't like it. I became the owner of his Fitbit, which I never wanted...but now I love it! It's a new toy, measuring my walks in steps and miles, heartbeat, quality of sleep, biking miles and lots more. I have it set to remind me to move if I'm sitting 30 minutes. My dog, Ella, also loves it because we walk more often than we did before. :-)
Gals, I read the posts and enjoy keeping up with everyone. Appreciate being a part of this group.. Heather wishing you a happy birthday. Hope this year is extra special for you. And wishing everyone well with their goals this month.

About MFP and changing passwords. I saw the message that said I was required to change my password and ignored it but two days ago when I tried to log on from my phone, it wanted me to use my user name and password. I clicked on the place that said "forgot password" and when it asked for a password, I entered what was most likely the password I'd used before, and MFP seemed to like it and all is well. It turned out to be no big deal.
Betsy, it seems like awhile since I've seen you on the thread. What a great deal for you to get the Fitbit Surge. I love technology and am hugely motivated by something that tells me how much I've walked and congratulates me for a job well done.
Heather,

Barbi,
Yes, I was gone all summer to Alaska and got back end of August. I'll be here in WA until spring.
I love the data from the Fitbit and it gets me moving. I love to walk and be outside and was surprised that the first three days I wore the Surge, it sent me a message that I had just completed a 26 mile marathon. Then a few days ago it celebrated a total of 70 miles. And it gives me a heads up when my steps reach 10,000 daily. I haven't tried to download to the computer yet but that will be fun. I also see where I can log my water and food intake and that will help me be honest with my calories in. I love water and drink all day but I know I underestimate my calories.
Barbi, was so sad when I read your posts about having to rest and not be active. I picture you loving to walk with your dogs and be outside....then was so happy to read of your positive doctor appointment. And how wonderful you did some line dancing.

The plank is a great exercise. It is good for many different parts of the body. Good luck on the challenge. Even if you start small, it will still bring great results.3 -
Did 5 minutes of hula hooping, held my plank for 3 minutes, then took the extremepump class. The plan for tomorrow is to do Kelly Coffee Meyers 30 Minutes to Fitness Plateau Buster DVD.
Mary – I’m the exact same way as you when it comes to public speaking – probably worse. I get all tongue-tied and start to cry if there’s something that’s on my mind. Like when I mentioned to the board how hurt I was, I started crying. I’m sure that didn’t make me appear any more credible. I should have known. I know me, and I should just have sent an email to the entire board. But I didn’t. Sometimes even if I have a listing of the points that I want to make, what I say comes out different than what I mean. And I start to sweat. I know I’m a real nit-picker when it comes to grammar. But I have to say that I’m not nearly as bad as Vince…!! One of the things that really annoys me is when someone says “me and my family read a book” when it should be “my family and I read a book”. I remember years ago I was helping out in a classroom typing stories the kids had written and I would explain when you would use “me” and when you would use “I” and why. Do you know that one of the kids actually said “thank you for telling us the difference”? Glad for you that you’re going to take Shep back.
Viv in UK – can you get one of those “glow in the dark” balls?
Kate – I’m so sorry about your SIL and your friends (((HUG)))
Okie – hope things go well for you tomorrow. Can’t say that I envy you at all!
After exercise stopped at the Salvation Army then Habitat for Humanity then Aldi. Now home and we’ll leave in a bit for bowling. Ceramics tonight, then mahjongg
Margaret – many times older things are built better than things you buy today, too. That home tour sounds really neat
Tammythaxton – so sorry you went thru all that and will be going thru more. Please be sure to come here and share everything with us. You CAN do this.

Michelle I can relate. I cry when nervous and when angry. It makes it hard to take me seriously.
I also relate to being particular about grammar. My mother was a grammar teacher (3rd/4th grader English teacher) AND my language in high school was Latin. I am constantly correcting people’s grammar while watching TV. Drives my poor husband batty. lol. In public, I have to bite my tongue- but I do not correct grammar in public. I would consider that rude. But poor grammar usage makes me batty.

Dr. Katie: The best thing I do to help combat depression is to have a goal to have fun every day. It doesn’t have to be something big. Walking the dog, going to yoga, working out at the gym, riding, are all examples of having fun. All of that said, I also take an antidepressant daily. I’ve been taking this medicine for many years. As the days get shorter, it becomes more important. Bright lighting in my home also helps with winter blues. :flowerforyou:
I talked with DD on the phone today. She is having a great adventure in moving into her new home. The first big problem is plumbing. There is no water for the pipes & toilets aren’t working. I'm not sure whether it is a problem with the well. She doesn’t seem upset about it and is taking it as an adventure. I wouldn’t be as relaxed about it as she seems to be. I hope they get that resolved before the first big freeze.

Heather - Happy Birthday I hope you enjoy your special day!
Michele- I definitely understand about being nervous. While I was reading my letter my legs and hands were shaking. But, not until he said I couldn't elaborate because he only gave us two minutes to speak. According to the statute they didn't follow proper protocol at all. I wonder if I can ask for attorney fees if we have to go to court.
I couldn't wait until tomorrow to go to my DD's to see Shep. Since the meeting was somewhat cancelled I decided to drive 2 1/2 hours and I noticed myself getting happier the closer I got! I told my DH that I would make my final decision about Shep if when I let him outside he wanted to get in my pickup. Sure enough he did just that along with a very royal welcome. He has never acted so excited to see me. I think he missed me as much as I missed him.

THANK YOU for all your birthday wishes!
DH got me several little presents to open this morning with my morning cuppa. AF seems to be a theme this year. He also bought me a tee shirt that reads
SLOW RUNNERS MAKE FAST RUNNERS FEEL GOOD. YOU'RE WELCOME.
My best present? Lost a pound. I'm 9st 13 lbs. That's 139 lbs to you US folks. Great to be in the nine stones. Haven't been there since 1990.
Still wondering why my brother is coming over.
My son sent me a little video of the grandchildren singing me happy birthday. He is sending me AF fizz.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx who is off to yoga this morning.9 -
Spikeyhair I wish I could visit Liverpool to see the Giants, I saw a youtube video of them in London I think and they were fantastic. I bet to see them "live" would be amazing.
Mary It's not easy being apart from our pets, glad Shep was pleased to see you and I'm sure you will be happier with him (and him you)
Margaret love your she cave
Heather congrats on being in the 9stone range, my weight is creeping up past 10 and a half stone which is far too heavy for me, I went up to 9 stone when I was pregnant with my son thirty odd years ago and now I'm even heavier. You might not need the tee shirt for long, if you keep up with your running you'll be one of the fast ones, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
Went to the hospital with dad yesterday and his leukemia has returned, he is starting on tablets today which by all accounts have very good results. He is going to be monitored every few weeks at first to see how he handles them. I have to collect the tablets from the hospital later this morning.
Going to my aunt's funeral this afternoon, she is my dad's younger sister and played a bit part in my life - I will miss her.
A bit difficult today, but I am trying to think of things I am thankful for and I do have a lot to be thankful for, more so than some.
Better get on I've a few things to do before going to collect dads tablets.
Have a good Tuesday and hope you all find something joyful today

I maintained in September
I went on the biannual Summit Ave house tour yesterday. There were twelve homes on the tour. These are more mansions than homes. These are the homes that the very wealthy built around 1890-1920. I didn't take pictures I barely got them all in in the 6 hour time frame they allowed for viewing. They were spread out over a a large are. I must have walked four to five miles yesterday. Many of these homes were three stories too. Not all the homes were open to the third floor but several were. I got plenty of exercise.
I would have enjoyed that too.
We have an Open House here in Hobart each year where we can go in and explore a number of buildings in town, including some of the older houses. I love doing that.

Then, everything just went south real fast. I broke my 6th rib on the left side
I did that a number of years ago. Everything hurt ... lying down, sitting, standing. I had to arrange the bed so I was sort of over on my right side and wouldn't make the mistake of turning on my left.
The only thing that didn't hurt was cycling. The cycling position allowed my rib cage to fall out into mid-air with no pressure on it, and so I got a lot of cycling in while I was healing.
Not, however, on the day after I cracked the ribs!! The morning I cracked the ribs, I had rammed my left foot into a table and could hardly walk. I was pretty sure I'd done something pretty bad to one of my toes. That evening, I went for a bicycle ride, and got into a situation where the person in front of me stopped suddenly. Normally, I would have put that left foot down to balance myself, but my foot was having none of that, and so I went over, right onto the ribs ... cracking the ribs. At the clinic, the doctor confirmed the cracked ribs, then asked if there were anything else. Well, yes, my toe. Sure enough it was broken, and I had broken the skin too. He asked when my last tetanus shot was, and I said, "um ..." Next thing I knew, I had a tetanus shot in my left arm. My left side was taken out of action with a shot in the arm, cracked ribs, and a broken toe.
The next day I wanted to try a bicycle ride, but felt so sick, I couldn't do anything. But a couple days later I was back on the bicycle again.
Have you sneezed yet? Always carry a pillow around with you or have one near at hand. You'll want to use it to brace your body for that event. Sneezing with cracked ribs is a whole new experience in pain!!!
I hope you feel better soon!!

Machka[/b] - how thrilling to see your DH's apple tree budding. Now, I'm curious. If someone were to get a dormant tree from the US, would it get mixed up season-wise if planted in your area? Maybe if it's truly dormant it won't care. My gravenstein has a branch that blossoms every fall so there's a mixed up one, lol.
A biologist once told me (and an entire class) that plants leafed and blossomed based on length of day. However, I immediately doubted him because I was sure that I'd see plants leafing and blossoming at odd times of the year, and sure enough that year we had a warm December in Alberta, and some of the trees in our yard budded and started to leaf.
I could be wrong, but I think it has to do with temperature.
We have lots of northern hemisphere plants here, and they seem to have adapted well to our seasons here. Most Australian natives are evergreens so the ones that bud and blossom in the spring and change colour in the autumn are non-natives, mostly from the northern hemisphere.

I got out for a decent run today at lunch. I started running thinking I'd do 3 km ... then as I went, I thought I might turn around at 2 km for a 4 km run. Eventually, I decided to turn around at 3 km for a total of 6 km.
It was OK and the weather was pretty good, but my legs felt a little bit lead-like. I want to tap into my inner gazelle!
Distance: 6.19km
Elevation 84m
Moving Time: 46:01
Elapsed Time: 46:26
Pace: 7:26/km
Plus I ended up doing quite a bit of walking and 5 flights of 20 stairs.

Morning all... and happy birthday, Heather!
Got through my kickoff committee meeting for my next event in March yesterday at noon, and then spun around, and with tons of help, got most of the courtyard of the program center festooned in twinkle lights for tonight's event. More to do today, with table and chairs, dance floor setup, etc., but got lots and lots of people helping. It will end up being lovely, and people will have a good time. Hoping for no rain... and had to beg the program center manager to turn the sprinklers off.
Lots of good news yesterday, too, on the grant side. We'll get one check at the event tonight, for about a third more than expected, and finally got in touch with one of our first corporate sponsors after playing phone tag for a week, and just nipped under their deadline with a verbal agreement on the amount I was actually hoping to get from them from the beginning. Still a grant committee decision to be made, but very, very hopeful. Need to put together a package for her quickly this morning, and should hear about that fairly soon.
So... crazy busy, running around from 6 a.m. yesterday, until after dusk (had to wait until the light fell, so we could see how the lights looked). it's good for me--it's the sitting around in meeting after meeting that stresses me out, being physically busy is a joyful thing... and I have to admit, I like supervising the process as well. Lots of fun, in the end.
OK, got about an hour and a half before I need to get on the road (it's about 5 miles away) back to the program center, and a revised grant package and notes from yesterday's meeting out before I leave. Within 16 hours, this event will be done, and within 32 hours, I'll be back in Arkansas...
Love y'all!
Lisa, busy but happy in Midland, TX

Regarding public speaking, I used to be absolutely terrified when I had to speak in public ... nauseated and shaking.
I knew that public speaking could be part of my future jobs (and I was right), so I decided to join Toastmasters and was with them for 2 years. In the first year, I went through the program and did each of the 10 speeches, but nothing extra. The second year, I felt brave enough to participate in a couple speech contests. I actually did a humorous speech in a competition in front of an audience of about 300 people. I placed second.
But I could hardly believe it ... just a couple years earlier, I would never have even imagined I could do that!!
That was quite a few years ago, and I've lost my touch ... I should really join another Toastmaster's group! But most of the time, I'm not too bad speaking in public now. Many of my classes these days have a public speaking element and that's OK.
That said, a few years ago, I did a speech for a class ... not even a very large class ... and for some reason, my exercise/stress induced asthma kicked in and I couldn't breathe. I was gasping for air every few seconds. The students each wrote a sentence about my speech and gave them to me (we did that for everyone), and about half mentioned that I looked like I was holding my breath. I was! Not deliberately ... my body just decided to shut down the breathing function for 5 minutes.

Margaret so cozy!
Welcome TammyThaxton we're here for you.
Sharon my signoff stats are manually updated from an excel spreadsheet. Sorry, no magic here!
Kay How about a little homemade beach, with a comfy lounge chair, good book, heat lamp, some recorded sea sounds and maybe even an umbrella drink? I'll be right there with you!
Betsy lucky Ella, lucky you! WTG!
Michele angry tears yup. And when I'm really VERY angry, I lose my voice completely.
Rye likewise, I frequently talk back to the TV driving Joe nuts. Will not correct his usage nor anyone else's in public. While it's perfectly appropriate in the classroom, elsewhere I believe it's more hurtful than helpful.
Katla toilets not working=adventure? Your DH has an admirable attitude!
Mary Happy for Shep, happy for you!
Viv (((hugs)))
Machka thanks, never thought of bracing on a pillow for sneezing and coughing. As the climate changes, think we'll see more out of season leaves and blooming.
Lisa I misread at first, thought you liked being the supervising Princess
Allie can you put your tea in a thermos for after the blood test? That's the only way I can get going on a tea-less morning.
Was pooped from vacuuming half the house this morning, THEN Joe decided to rearrange living room furniture in preparation for winter. Needed to clear space around wood stove etc. OK great, but after he finished with the sofa and recliners, that left the tables, lamps, etc etc etc for me. He wanted the rolling table from the guest room for between our recliners. OK, swapped with smaller pedestal table so guest room would still have lamp, but the setup was rickety so moved floor lamp from master bed to guest room, and the dominoes continued to topple all afternoon. Tomorrow will finish the vacuuming and start the marathon dusting/tidying needed to prep for visit from my young Idaho friend on Saturday. And you know how much I love to clean :noway:

Good morning all! Happy Tuesday! I had Trentin with me last night until 9pm, tonight I have a provider meeting, and tomorrow night I will have Trentin again until 9pm; which means, no work on the play areas for the kids until Thursday night. I need to finish putting up the cubby sized shelves in my new closet alcove, but I put the hardware SOMEWHERE and I can't remember where! lol So frustrating!
Heather- Happy birthday! Hope your day is filled with all of the things/people you love!
Machka- I saw a really interesting article in regards to trees having a "heartbeat". It talked about how there is a rhythm to the way sap flows through the tree's trunk and limbs, etc. I will see if I can find it and post it here. Found it! https://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/it-turns-out-that-trees-have-a-heartbeat-too/ Oh, I hope this doesn't post the whole article right here. Just wanted the link.

How early? Do you charge extra? (I think you ought to if they arrive with their child more than 15 minutes before the agreed start time of the day or more than 15 after the end of the day. Your time is VALUABLE!
