First time joining a running challenge group, goal of 75 miles this month. Need some motivation for the upcoming long winter.

Today's run felt horribly hot even though it wasn't. It was 71 degrees but my last three runs were in the glorious 40s.
October Goal: 100 miles
10/1: planned rest day
10/2: 4.5 miles

It felt great to be back out there running this morning. My running buddy has abandoned me because "it is cold"... *sigh*...
This is my favorite time of year for running!

Okay, a more serious answer to this...
Temps in the 50's F and up:- I do fine. T-shirt, shorts and normal socks
Temps in below 50's F depend highly on wind, moisture and etc.- I will need handwamers for sure. Fingers and toes are always an issue for me long before any other body part
- Same for toe warmers
- Probably wearing my Darn Tough wool socks
- Depending on how low I switch form tshirt to UA Cold Gear compression mock turtle top
- Same with the bottoms, I swap to UA Cold Gear fitted Storm pants
- If wind is an issue, my North Face Wind Barrier jacket goes on. It was WAY WAY expensive, but it stops the wind dead in its tracks
- If temps are really cold I add a..whats it called.. the hood that covers your face too. Makes you look like a ninja
- Wool hat for my ears if it is not cold enough for the hood thingy
If that cannot keep me warm, I just do not run. It will be my fingers and toes that defeat me first. At 40 degrees I already need the warmers. I have run in 0F, but only short runs as my toes get painfully cold.
Weirdly my fingers and toes don't really seem to get cold - the backs of my hands were kind of cold today but my fingers were fine until the very end of the run, at which point my left thumb specifically decided it was cold. I wore the UA socks you recommended a few weeks ago and my feet felt fine.
I did some googling and this looks like a good option for a windbreaker, and less expensive than I'd expected. My Brooks jacket from last year still fits but is too warm for now - I'll give it a go when we're into the thirties. Side note: what does it mean for a jacket to be "media compatible"?0 -

A media compatible jacket will usually have some kind of special pocket designed to keep electronics dry, and possible a place for a cord to snake in/out for headphones.3

I got to the gym for the first time in like months. I've been having such a huge problem with emotional eating lately and have been having a terrible time getting it under control, so it's been hard to go to the gym because I never feel well. I didn't feel well today either, but I ran a mile and did a decent weight training for my legs. I think if I can just stick with the gym and my running goal this month, it will go a long way in helping me with my eating.7

Ah, that makes sense. I am spoiled by my waterproof watch and wireless headphones - I've actually never ran with wired headphones, but I could see it being a pain in a jacket.2 -

I keep my phone in my running pants, my watch is waterproof, and I don't typically run with headphones (when I do they are wireless) so not a big selling point for me either.0 -
I'm game. I've been running since I was a kid; took a few years off while I dabbled in crossfit, but came back to regular running in January, with a weekly goal of 30 miles. So I'll set my monthly goal for 120 miles, with the supplemental goal of losing the five pounds I gained in September as a result of a vacation and a couple of other trips I had to go on. I'll weigh myself in the morning and post it with my distance.9

Rosa has dumped a bunch of rain on Phoenix. And more is expected this afternoon/evening.
3 miles planned for this evening and looking forward to it. Will not go if lightning (doubtful) or flooding (highly probable). If it's flooded I will flip today and tomorrow.4 -

I guess yesterday’s intervals took more out of me than I thought. Today’s run was hard. My quads felt sore, my back felt stiff, and I feel TIRED. The latter is kind of my fault... staying up later than I probably should.
Glad to be done! I’m loving the lower humidity!!

I think everyone has great goals this month!
Welcome to the newbies and those returning from hiatus
I've been struggling hard-core since late August with my food intake and general work life balance. Most of you probably know I am a mom, night shift nurse, student, etc. I completed my master's degree and am now working on my post-master's certification. It is ridiculously hard. I am a full time student. I have all my school work to complete. I must travel for school frequently, and I see patients a full day in the clinic three days a week (for school, unpaid). Then I work night shift on Fri, Sat, and Sun night. Every Mon morning after work I take my daughter out for breakfast so we can have some time together before the week gets nuts. I run 5 days a week, and I aim to lift 2 days a week, but mostly I only get one in. I've had some snafus with my program, and it's triggered a ridiculous funk in my mood that I can't seem to shake. I am just TIRED of only work/school/family obligations. There is no time for anything really. I feel guilty when I run because I should be studying. We started eating out more because I couldn't make it to the store or manage to have enough time to cook a meal.It's a mess. I've jokingly said that I'm going to start studying naked so I can decrease my workload (laundry)!
This isn't complaining. It's just venting. I miss when I had more time to be more active in here too. Like how in the heck do I find more time in a day?
I am determined to not let this crap keep me down. I've got nine months to go. Maybe a year because I'm considering a break.
Thoughts?
I would just say don’t feel guilty about letting stuff slide. Wife/mom guilt is real and we are so hard on ourselves. Who cares if laundry piles up, just buy everyone an extra pack of underwear. Who cares if dinner isn’t made, no one died eating cereal and milk for dinner.
It’s just temporary and even if certain things aren’t ideal, getting through in one piece is what’s important.

That is less than a third what I paid, so yours is a much better price Mine is a "Wind Wall" (had to look up their name, lets no wind through - at all. Have run in storms, can confirm.) and heavier than that one.

Another thing I do that helps w/ time saving is I do most of my grocery shopping online. If this is a possibility for you @AprilRN10 , I highly recommend it. I work on my order throughout the week based on what's on sale and what meals I want to make, and schedule it for pick up on my way home from work one day.6

Boo ... not off to a good start to this challenge. Eye exam this morning, it's been raining so planned to do a treadmill walk at the gym this afternoon (not happening). Personally do not like a day without exercise so time to hit a DVD workout with Leslie Sanzone. Tomorrow will be a better day for me ...9

I'm in for 150 miles for October. I have a 5k and marathon this weekend. I've been lazy since my last race (Sept 8) so I have no clue how I'll do. Hope everyone's running well.8

Ah, thanks for looking that up. It looks like the Wind Walls are out of stock, but I did at least find a product description for one version and it says that it's fleece (or fleece-lined), which is definitely heavier than I want right now (I already have this, which sounds more along the lines of the Windwall). It sounds like you might be more prone to the cold than I am. I've still got a decent layer of padding to lose, in any case.0 -
@RunsOnEspresso - just clouds for us so far and it is a continuation of the heat from yesterday. Our chance for rain now has been downgraded to 40% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow which means we probably won't get anything I was really hoping to get in a rain run (not in a thunderstorm though)!
@MegaMooseEsq - Thanks for the hat recommendation! I am always on the lookout for good running hats (I don't ever run without one) especially ones that aren't too expensive and those look great! Also love that it comes in so many different colors! I think I may retire some of my more shabby, well loved, hats and get a new one or two
@aprilrn10 - I can definitely relate to what you are going through to become a primary care provider! My daughter has been going through it as well and is just finishing up her residency. She however doesn't have a family to take care of. She does commute quite a ways (easily an hour+ in traffic) and goes super early and then does an indoor cycling class. She works in a pediatrics office seeing patients 4 days a week, 2 different clinics for underserved children (mostly homeless) and rotations at Children's Hospital. I honestly don't know when she sleeps!
Some other meal ideas - Simple steamed fresh veggies of all kinds with cheese on top. We liked to have baked potatoes also with veggies and sometimes chicken or ham on top. If you don't have one maybe consider investing in an instant pot - I wish I had had one years ago. You can have dinner (even from frozen chicken) in 30-45 mins and it is delicious. I also make spaghetti sauce and chili in large batches and freeze it so dinner can be as simple as cooking some pasta and reheating the sauce with a salad on the side.
@cbos1215 - I agree that getting up and moving everyday is good but sometimes it is also good to have a rest day (planned or unplanned) and let our bodies recover. Hope the weather cooperates for you tomorrow!
No run for me this morning. Planned to get up but between my run yesterday and agility class last night with the pup, I was tired. It is also still hot and tomorrow should be much cooler (hopefully)! I do have strength training this evening. Almost missed it too because of a dermatologist appointment I thought was at one time but is actually much later. So glad my trainer could move me into another slot even if it is late!6 -

Of course, I'm quite parochial; I live in the US, have never visited a running store catering to a culture that doesn't look like mine, and know mostly US runners in real life.
I had always thought "leggings" was a term for some female garment that I didn't need to know about. Your post leads me to believe it might be a British/Canadian/other non-US English term for what I know as "tights." Kind of like the distinction between "sweater" and "jumper," which I know only because of discussion on the translation of J K Rowling's writing for American audiences.0 -
Network went down at work, and I'm working from home today, so I took the opportunity and went for a run/walk. Attempted C25K W1D1 again. Got halfway through... 1 mile... network came back up...
I was ready to be done anyway. My goal now is just to consistently get out there and get moving. It's still so hot out there. My back was hurting. My calves were hurting. I was pooped.
So, 1 mile down, 24 to go. It's a start.
Btw, I read the numbers wrong after my attempt on Saturday. I didn't do 1.5 miles. I did 1.17. I don't know how my brain rounded that UP. So my 25 mile goal is probably a stretch, but I'm going to leave it as is as a little extra push. That's the point, anyway, right?6 -
