singlet is new to me too but i have noticed it is for both men and women. they don't seem to be much different than a sleeveless shirt or tank. it usually is for a team or running group in our area
We call them singlets here - they are meant to be an under garment - keep you warm in winter. Tank tops are the same design but meant to be worn on their own, usually in summer so often have colours/logos etc on them.
I detest the term wife beater and cringe anytime I hear it. I think its an OLD term, thinking a Street Car Named Desire, doesnt the guy in that tend to wear a white tank top.0 -
So nothing ground-breaking or really innovative from the doctor visit.
This was a sports medicine therapy specialist. Explained my history, current exercise/ strength / stretching regimen. He was impressed, and surprised how dedicated I was. Did a few mobility tests, and said I was good in all that. There was nothing he could find that would specifically point to what the cause of the posterior shin splints were. He did some massaging and pressure point manipulation, and then had me run down the hall to see how it felt. It was still painful, but maybe a little better. Did a little more manual therapy, then handed me off to the physical therapist.
She showed me some stretches and exercises (of which I already do all but one). Then said OK, that will be $213. And need you to come back again Friday.
So I’m not impressed or very happy, but they say each session builds on the previous one. I will go one more time, but that is it.
Same as all the online coaching programs they want you to pay for. If you have a little common sense, and do a little research, you can find all this stuff for free online.
But he thinks I can still run the 15K on the 21st, and the marathon in January. So I’m trusting he knows what he is talking about.
He wants me to rest until after the Friday visit, but cleared me to start running this weekend, but only up to 3 miles if no pain
Oh well, at least I will hopefully be running again.

I am sure that you have done everything, but have you tried cross fibre massage? It was the thing for my posterior tibial tendonitis, absolute godsend.1 -
@Scott6255 sorry your appointment with the sports medicine specialist wasn't more illuminating. It's so frustrating when you feel like you could have found the same answers yourself. I hope you will find the PT helpful but I don't blame you for being unimpressed so far.

Did a little run after work today. I managed to time it right and got done before the thunderstorms came through. I felt really tired and my hamstrings are sore, so I was not optimistic about the run. I talked myself into just getting at least 3 miles in, and then managed to keep convincing myself to do just a little more before I turned back, so ended up with 4.

@Scott6255 Ouch! Yeah, a friend in my running group went to a PT for one session with a hamstring issue, and after the sticker shock, never went back again! Hope your next visit goes better.
Recovery run today, so I took things nice and easy. Of course, temps and humidity being what they are, I was still a soggy mess by the end. Ran with the group for 5 easy miles after an initial 9 miles solo...a little too far for a recovery run if I'm honest, so Thursday's recovery run will be cut back to something like 8-9 miles or so.
Tomorrow I'm scheduled to do intervals, so I plan on a couple of miles to warm up, followed by 6 repeats of 0.5 mile at 5K pace and 0.5 mile of recovery, and once the repeats are done, another couple of miles to cool down. I'll see how that goes, and adjust accordingly for future interval sessions.

@Scott6255 - I am sorry there wasn't a more definitive answer! Your cost also makes me so happy I have insurance that allows me to go to some number of PT sessions as ordered by one of the regular doctors. No doubt they are billing back an obscene amount that the insurance will only pay a part of but is more than what I would pay if I was a cash patient.
I saw my dermatologist today for my yearly check and had some suspicious things zapped. He was in the room all of maybe 10 mins. My copay alone was $80. As I was getting ready to leave I had to wonder how much each of those zaps was going to cost...
I had to laugh as I read through some of the recent posts on singlets, tank tops, suspenders and braces... I wish there was a laugh button!5 -
@scott6255 I went to PT for hip pain and I was sorely disappointed too. Thankfully I didn’t have to pay so I can imagine i would have been really peeved if I had. I really wanted him to solve my problem and get me running pain free after the first visit - tall order, but I stuck it out for 2 weeks and nothing improved. He said from the get go that I’d probably have to give up running to some extent. He couldn’t pinpoint what the actual issue was either.
I bought new sneakers and my hip pain clear up. Unbelievable.

@Scott6255 Hope the PT helps in some way.
I don't pay anything for my PT... I'm lucky enough to be doubly covered, and have pt allowances built in. Thank goodness because I've done a lot of PT at Baylor. Maybe a years worth. But if it makes you feel better, my PT was billed at ~450/hr. They were worth it though, not that i would/could have paid that... I've just been "lucky".
You have pain in your lower leg? Is it possible to have a stress fracture or stress reaction? Did they do any imaging? Does it hurt to tap on the bone?
(That'll be 213$ 😏 or a Panera bread cookie 😁)
ETA... Hows your core strength? And the minimus and medial glute strength/firing? Gait analysis? Usually injury on men you look down not up the chain... So, how about your feet? How are your shoes? Do you need orthotics? Calf strength? (All rhetorical questions- just to get you thinking). Good luck. Hate seeing a fellow runner down.3 -

First time out with the neighbourhood running group. There were four of us running plus one guy on a bike (one of the organizers - nursing a sore knee).
Maybe a bit too far today as the route we did finished up about 1km from where we started! I had someone who hasn't run in a couple years running with me and matching my slow pace which was nice. I walked back to where we started with her as that's where her car is (and it's about 200m from my back door).

I realised today just a handful of steps into my run that it wasn't going to be a happy time. A 15k race followed by a night of vomiting then two days of barely eating means I had nothing in the tank. My legs felt good post run, which was a bonus, but I struggled to find an easy rhythm and called it early so as not to damage myself. My tummy is now settled but not yet super-keen on food. Tomorrow perhaps...

@MegaMooseEsq I am a lot further north than most in this group ( we have had snow already) and we have quite a few local runners who re-purpose Bike Jackets for winter running. The benefit is a longer body on the back ( designed to prevent Tire Splash covering your butt in moisture/mud) Zippered Side vents and a rear vent ( mine is zippered ) . Also they are highly reflective especially if you get the Fluorescent Sunshine Yellow like I have. There are differant versions based on brands, some with thumb loops, Inner and Outer sleeves at the wrist, double Velcro at the wrist etc. Most important is it fits your requirements for the local environment, budget and sporting needs.SarahRuth42 wrote: »I have never before seen such an in depth discussion about tights.

4.0°C with a very chilly 19kmh WSW wind, Windchill feels like 0.0°C and 33% humidity.
I got a bit of a late start and just about needed the headlamp on the return loop.
My pace was fairly slow as I had my hydration bag with bear spray, orange ribbon in one pocket and yellow ribbon in another pocket - that's right marking a trail for some people who have never been back in this area. Yellow for the Easy routing, orange for the hard way with the long steep relentless hill climb. Yet on Garmin it doesn't look bad until you hoover over it with the mouse and get 22% grade - that makes you work for it up or down.
When you have ran the trails many times you don't even think about the multiple crossing trails but for the Innocent it would be so easy for them to take a wrong turn and run off the edge of a washout cliff or into the steep box canyon with an ugly climb back out. I know I have been in there while scouting trails.

Possibly because I'm British-born and of a certain age..... to me tights are like pantyhose, but thick wooly ones. That's what we had to wear under our school skirts and so for me that's what tights will always be. The nylon ones (in my mind) are stockings, regardless of whether they require holding up with a suspender belt or not! And anything that is actually a pair of tight trousers (for running or not) are leggings. You can probably imagine the faces I pull when reading about men running in tights lol.
Lovely 3 kilometre slow and easy recovery run this morning. I decided it was just a key in pocket, phone in hand, shoes on feet day and the lack of water bottle, belt for tissues, coins and other 'essentials' was liberating. Locked into a nice easy pace straight away and just about managed to maintain it (well it sped up by about 20 seconds per km according to phone but I'll take it). 19ºC according to the display over a hotel pool I run past, I managed to find the point where I was about to break a sweat but never really did. Just me, the river path and the sunrise. Oh and about a million annoying dogwalkers for some reason, but it felt so good I just about managed to ignore them and keep my pulse down 🤣

For September I didn't reach my goal...but that's ok... It's a new day and month so I'll aim for my next goal. I'm supporting the Heart Foundation in their Marathon Challenge...so I'm aiming to reach 42km this month! Wish me luck 😀

After sleeping on it, I think I am going to cancel Friday's appointment. Just doesn't seem worth the money to go back and have them watch me do the same exercises and stretches I have been doing at home already. This week of rest has probably helped more than anything. So I think if I don't do anything stupid, I can start easing back into running this weekend.
Wish I could afford decent health care. But life is what it is. Thanks again guys, I really appreciate your support.

Boxing boot camp this morning with some running in between workouts. Worked outdoors at a high school stadium so ran a couple laps around the football field, close to 2 miles. Home having my morning coffee now, will go to the gym later this morning with hubby.6
