Doing c25k, w5d1. Did a combined 3km (which I count because my main distance tracker does too). I managed to do 1km in under 10 minutes! Which, judging by the fact that half of it was walking, is pretty good.

Had my first evening run because I couldn’t drag my butt out of bed this morning after sleeping in three days in a row. I must have really wanted to make it four. Anyway, it wasn’t great; I did run 5 mins /walk 3 mins intervals. I have tried doing all of this C25k without paying any attention to my speed or heart rate, but today I was irritated by how slow Garmin said I was going. I am glad all runs are not like that. Back to mornings for me next time (hopefully)!
1.88 km = 5.75 / 25 miles9 -
8.42 miles tonight

rheddmobile wrote: »I know I said I would never do this, but I'm contemplating a half marathon. The Big River Crossing half plus 5k is in November.
I know I'm not ready to RUN a half, but I regularly run 10k plus 3+ miles walking, which totals 10 miles-ish. Tack on another 3 walking and I'm pretty sure I could easily run/walk a half. The question is, could I do it in under 3 hours for the cutoff? We generally run 12 minute miles on our longer runs, but that's through the woods on a trail, and most of this will be paved, therefore faster. We walk between 15 minutes to 20 minutes. The pace needed for 3 hrs is 13:44 which would be cutting it close.
I think every runner says the same thing - I'm not ready for a HM.
Big River Crossing HM - November 3, 2018. Which basically gives you another 3+ weeks for training with minimum taper. Cutting it a little close but probably doable.
Since you already manage 10km regularly I have to ask:
What is the longest distance that you have run?
For your long runs do you use a walk/run type plan or pure run?
Maybe go out tomorrow and do a long run with a walk run cycle. 3km run - 100m walk (or 100 steps) - 3km run - 100 walk - etc. Try for 4 cycles ( 12km ) and then a hard self evaluation of how you feel in-comparison to your regular 10k run.
7 cycles = HM + 600m. I have some friends who do a 3km/2km walk run cycle so 4 cycles = 20.4 km
I think you could do an abbreviated-Modified Hal Higdon Novice 1 Hm Training plan. One thing you will notice from most Novice HM training plans they never have you run the actual HM distance - trust in the plan they are proven by lots of runners.
Since you already manage 10km you can start at week 7/8 and eliminate week 9 which is centered on a 10km race

Kind of funny this morning. Since signing up for my first half marathon I've been aprehensive about having to run in the rain 'because I'm serious about this and a bit of wet stuff cannot be allowed to affect my training'. Some background info here: I'm British so pretty much grew up in rain, but live in Spain and am married to a Spaniard who is either a cat really or secretly thinks he will dissolve if he gets rained on. Anyway, so far we had only had a few drops of rain....this week the forecast was for heavy rain Monday and Tuesday and showers today and tomorrow. Monday was a rest day. Yesterday it was cloudy and ugly sky but held off until long after my run. Sooooo I had reckoned I had once again missed my chance to be a badass and run in the rain. Woke up in the early hours to the sound of torrential rain and storms. Got up at 6.30, looked at the news to find we were on 'red alert' until 9am and the authorities recommended everyone stay indoors. I run at 8 when my daughter leaves for school. Today's schedule was for a quick 3km recovery run. So I sit and think "Am I crazy enough to go out and run in that? Is it at all sensible to go out and run in that?" At 7.30 it stopped. Well dang. Never mind, I thought, I'll go out and hope it starts again. To tempt fate, as it is still pretty warm and it wasn't actually raining when I was ready to leave, I didn't bother taking my cap OR brand new waiting to be tried out rainproof running jacket. At that point my husband decided to announce I was absolutely insane and if I was going to insist on being that crazy he would have to come with me "just in case anything happened to me". He's very unfit and has only come with me a couple of times, manages to run about 10 minutes before going purple and having to slow, so I had to adjust my planned route to an out and back that I could run on ahead and then pick him up on my way back. The entire walk to where I start to run and the kilometre he kept up with me he muttered about how wet we were going to get and how crazy we were.
It didn't rain. Nearest thing I felt to a raindrop was when I ran under a tree. Nothing, nada, zilch rain.
Got home, had a shower, started making breakfast, looked out the window to see it was raining again.
The powers that be are ganging up to ruin my dream of being a badass runner, obviously.
So, as @Avidkeo encouraged me to, I tried to be 'Pastor Vincent insane' but apparently I'm just not good enough LOL

@marisap2010 I just love that sign your co-workers made for you. I would be so touched by that. And it's amazingly well done - an artist in the midst there. Congratulations again on being a marathon finisher! So awesome.
@rheddmobile - sounds like you can run the half. Good advice above, why not give it a try if you are willing to walk/run.8 -

The secret to learning to run in the rain is... you might want to get pen and paper for this so that you can take notes, cause it is overly complicated... I will wait while you get it.... you ready yet? Come on already, I don't have all day! Oh there you are okay... here it is...
Determine to run your training schedule no matter the weather. Hot/Cold/Rain/snow. Just get'er done.
That is it.
You might want to invest in a wide section of clothing to make that possible. Running in 0F/-18C degrees is way different than running in 90F/32C
Obviously have some intelligence if you are in real weather, like with evacuation orders and all that.7 -
No run yesterday, none today. Today I drive to my Mom's place to crash and this weekend I marry off my baby sister16
-
@BruinsGal_91 - what a jerk that guy ... was on many levels.
@PastorVincent - congrats to your baby sister! Just read your story about the low blood sugar. That sounds awful. I would have had to rest in the car for a long time before even attempting to drive I think!
It felt like a sauna when I stepped outside this morning at 4:30. We had a few days of cool but I guess that hurricane is sending humidity my way - even though it's hundreds of miles away.
This week in my lifting program it is heavy weights. Well... I think I went too heavy on glutes last night because when I set out to run I had a pain on one side. I thought it might work itself out but decided to call it quits at 3 miles. Hopefully it will be one of those things that gets better overnight! I seem to get these weird things that miraculously get better. Fingers crossed!

Erm.....thanks. I think :-p I had kinda worked that one out for myself. Fully equipped with a rainproof running jacket (found in the sales), a baseball cap I stole from my daughter and a sandwich bag for my phone.
While summer running here sucks because it's so hot, winter running is awesome because we don't get snow, it doesn't rain all that often (though when it does it does it pretty enthusiastically) and what we think of as 'cold' is pretty much like a British summer.
@PastorVincent Now please don't disappoint me by telling me you wouldn't have gone out in that situation. It wasn't even raining **rolls eyes**. Hope the wedding goes well :-)

Hello.
I am joining for the first time. I am more of a run-walking. I am making my third attempt at completing C25K. My ultimate goal is to run a 10K.

@eleanorhawkins That is funny! You are lucky! It seems to rain here every time I run. I am definitely not a badass. I always find that first step out the hardest. Once I am in it, my brain accepts I will be fine.

Good morning everyone!
I'm jumping in a little late but I'm seriously lacking motivation to run this month and I'm glad I found this thread.
This past May I finished the Broad Street Run (10 miles) in Philly for the first time and was inspired to run a HM as a follow up. I had signed up to run the Rock n Roll HM in September, but August was tough for me. I have no time to run in the morning and the heat made long runs in the evening unbearable (even if I started after 6pm). My best (and last) long run to date was 11.3 miles on 8/13, since then I haven't run more than 3 miles in a session. Needless to say I wasn't ready for the race and sold my bib to a guy from the UK who ran it in 1:46:18!!
The one thing I took away from this is that training for a big race in the middle of the summer is tough. But I have my sites set on the Philly Love Run HM at the end of March.
Anyway, I'm setting a goal of 75 miles for this month. I use MapMyRun as a tracker.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

@rheddmobile Sometimes I feel super-fast on trails, like I'm much faster than I usually run. And then I get home, look at the pace, and am really surprised at how slow I truly was... I think all the little changes of direction, jumping over obstacles and in general taking really short quick steps is what makes it feel crazy fast, while on roads the relation between cadence and pace is much more obvious.
@amirahdaboss Sadly, no. I will never ever be a true morning runner. I love running in the evening, getting up early to run sucks. In the evening a run is a great way to relax or to push myself, in the morning it's just blah...
I somehow manage in summer when the heat gets too bad, but it's a struggle every single time. The only way I can run in the morning is by telling myself that it's not optional, I *have* to do it, no excuses allowed! Exception: running a short distance to work in the morning (which I actually did today). Getting up 30min earlier, eat breakfast, jog to work and shower there is okay. It takes less time that way, compared to finishing my run at home, showering there and driving to work, to do that I'd have to get up an hour early, minimum.
If you have trouble finding motivation early in the morning: I recently read somewhere that training should not be about motivation, but dedication. Doesn't matter how you feel, just do it. Maybe that way of thinking could get you out of bed early?
Plus, yeah, going to bed early enough. I actually set go-to-bed alarms the evening before I want to get up early to run.
@biketheworld I have the Altra Intuition 3.0. Not terribly impressed: I don't mind the zero drop, I also don't see a huge difference compared to my usual 4mm drop shoes. I like the wide toe box - but the heel is wide too, and despite some fancy lacing technique I found online, I still feel like I'm slipping / they are too loose.... As @PastorVincent wrote, Altra is proud of making their shoes "foot shaped". It just turned out that my foot is apparently not shaped the same way as the Altra foot.
(eta: I posted a way-too-long post on all my shoes in the group section earlier today..)
@MegaMooseEsq If you like shorts that go low in the back, take a look at cycling shirts. They usually are quite long (and sometimes even have pockets on the back, yay )
@eleanorhawkins You'll get your chance yet to run in the rain and feel badass!

I have to figure out when the heck I'm going to run.
I am going through YET ANOTHER medication change. I now have something to help me sleep better, trouble is I feel like a zombie when I wake up in the morning, so running in the a.m. is out. I am also a zombie when I get home from work, so running in the p.m. is out.
Really the only time I have any energy whatsoever to do my c25k is in the afternoon. I have been taking walks on my lunch break, but I could turn them into runs I suppose. But I would need to figure out the logistics such as: where will I change clothes, what if I need a shower, etc.? We do have a gym in the building which I could use for showering, but damn, I just don't have any extra money right now to be spending on stuff like gym memberships.
This is all so very frustrating.
Do any of you run on your lunch break? How do you manage the details?7 -
Welcome @wittybelle and @coltrane73!
@mbaker566 good thing they're cute, right?
@RespectTheKitty I'm running in the morning with my dogs now, but used to run at lunchtime with a coworker. We are fortunate in that we have two restrooms (per gender, 4 total) with two changing areas and showers in each. The complexity involved in coordinating with other coworkers to share the space was sometimes hilarious.
W2D2 done with the dogs this morning. I left the house right about the time I'm normally returning, so pushed pretty hard and ended up having to go past the house to complete the cooldown time. In retrospect, the push was unnecessary as the workout is 31 minutes regardless. Doh!3 -
October goal: 95 miles
10/2: 5.5 miles
10/3: 5 miles
10/4: 5 miles
10/6: 3.1miles Old Rip 5K - PR and 2nd place AG
10/8: 5.2 miles
10/10: 5 miles
28.5/95 miles completed
Today's run was a chilly 5 miles. I was glad I didn't run yesterday since it was raining and thundering when I got up. I had run Monday instead. It did clear up by later in the afternoon, but then it was kind of hot and not as nice as Monday afternoon had been so I was glad I ran then. Today was good. It was ~52F which is actually a bit chilly for me. But it was a nice break from the heat of the summer. It is always harder for me to run in the cold though. I never quite know how to dress. In the summer I just wear shorts and a tank top and my cap. Today I wore capris and a t-shirt. I debated about wearing the cap or a headband. The cap won't keep my ears warm, but the headband is kind of uncomfortable with my earbud. In the end I went with the cap and it was the right call. My legs were fine and my torso was too, but my arms were a little chilly and my hands were kind of cold. I thought about wearing a jacket, but I only have a black jacket and really would want to wear something more reflective early in the morning. Plus I'm sure I would have ended up running with the jacket around my waist since it wasn't that cold. I also need to get some gloves for running. I know I have some gloves somewhere, but no idea where they are. And I would really just like some lightweight gloves to block the wind, not necessarily really warm gloves. I'll probably go back to running in the afternoon or maybe at lunch time when it starts to get really cold. (Although compared to a lot of you it never gets really cold here.) But I think as long as it is in the 50's then running in the morning won't be a problem.
@RespectTheKitty I have run at lunch before, but I live really close to my office and I go home for lunch. The main thing I don't like about running at lunch is that by the time I get home and change I only have about 30 minutes to actually run if I am going to shower and change again and get back to work. When I do run at lunch I make sure to lay everything out so I can change quickly and I pack a lunch that I can take with me to eat at my desk. I would think for you the shower would be the hardest part. If you have a private restroom maybe you could just kind of use a wash cloth to rinse off.
2018 races:

I am way behind but trying to get caught up...
Non- Running Hobbes the Vizsla update...
Hobbes is home after the surgery (2 areas - 1 known cancer and another possible site) and still pretty out of it. I didn't get much sleep last night as he was struggling to get comfortable. We tried having him in his crate but he has to have the cone on and it is tough for him to turn around in the crate with it on. I ended up lifting him onto the bed (not allowed to jump up or down) and managed to keep him there most of the night. He typically sleeps at our feet under a blanket but was frustrated when he couldn't move under it with the cone either... No pathology reports until the end of the week...
I haven't really run since Friday. I have a sore foot and running on the beach on Sunday didn't help. Hoping to get to the gym this afternoon for some cycling or elliptical cardio but after a nap!
I have a race on Sunday and am resting my foot hoping it will feel well enough to run by Sunday. If not I will collect my gear on Saturday and DNS the race. I don't want to make it any worse.

Don't know what happened to post earlier but here goes again:
@RespectTheKitty I have run at lunch in the past and probably will again during this winter due to daylight issues. However it is relatively easy for me as my job is flexible enough that I can take an hour plus break as long as I am available by phone for any emergencies, I have a gym nearby that I shower in and scrubs are the ultimate in ease of getting dressed.
ETA: Nice bling @MegaMooseEsq
@wittybelle and @coltrane73 Welcome!
@shanaber hope Hobbes prognosis comes back good.
1.57 zippy miles today after upper body circuit with the PT0 which brings total to 30.77 so far this month per endomondo, then 10 minutes on the stationary bike.

@midwesterner85 - Saw your post about the elevated liver enzyme tests. I have had mine be high off and on but not consistently high. Last time they were high my doctor ordered a liver ultrasound and everything came back normal. She did say that they are seeing a significant rise in non-alcoholic related fatty livers even in children. One thing you might look into is Milk Thistle supplement but you would need to check with your doctor before trying it. It has been shown to have some good results for helping liver health and reducing ALT and AST.
Also here is a study I found when mine were high that talks about the effect on long distance runners based on age and speed. Note the sample size was very small - just 14 runners, but still interesting results. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4415847/2 -
Awww, poor Hobbes. @shanaber I know you will make him as comfortable as you can, and hope the pathology report comes back with good news.
Welcome @wittybelle and @coltrane73!2 -
@RespectTheKitty I run at work sometimes, and do it more often in fall/winter since it gets dark so early. I don't have access to a shower so I use the wet cleansing wipes to "rinse" off. I don't have to see a lot of people so I sit at my desk for a few minutes to cool off when I get back and then change in the restroom. I ran today and got caught in the rain so I had wet hair for a while, but everyone in my office knows that I was out running and no one cared that I was a wet mess for a while! Most days I try to go as late in the afternoon as I can. Oh, and don't forget to bring a change of underwear- nothing worse than sitting around in wet ones for hours!! Made that mistake once and it will never happen again!8
