@shanaber - any update on Hobbes?
@PastorVincent - are you crazy? (why am I even asking this ) Seriously - that was really dangerous. Glad you made it home OK. Ice cream - is there really a time when it's not OK? Food of champions.
@BruinsGal_91 - Wow - "area public safety agencies" - makes me wonder if the course hadn't been pre-approved?
Does anyone run in Altra's? I was chatting with someone before Wineglass about them and she really sang their praises. I've had Brooks GTS for years - occasionally try something else but always come back to the GTS. I might get a pair of Altras and put them in a rotation. But if you've tried the Altras, I'd love to hear what you think.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 72/60 miles
Oct goal - 60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH
Zion Half in February is already sold out! So is Grandma's in June. Sheesh. I'm going to try to find someone willing to transfer their bib to me. The Zion has a system to "legally" do that. Haven't found out if Grandma's does.

Yuck. Phone said 73F and 100% humidity. Guess I just happened to get my run in between the rain. Rounded a corner and almost face-planted into an entire tree that had fallen during the night that was laying across the sidewalk. Turned the next corner and saw a 'Sidewalk Closed' sign, but it was off to the side, so I figured it was ok. About 10 steps in I started slipping and sliding, arms windmilling trying to keep myself upright. There was mud covering the entire sidewalk. Findally got through that but shoes felt like they weighed 5 extra pounds with all the mud.
But...I got to run 4 miles, and it ended up being right at marathon pace. So it was a good day.
@PastorVincent yet again you prove the saying "Do as I say, not as I do". Brother, I wish you all the best. And don't do that again12 -

My trail shoes are Altra's they are great! I do not even need a wide in them, just 1/2 size up because they are are, as they put it, "foot shaped"2 -

We have a high of -2C today and currently light snow.
Yay I get to run in the snow tonight!

i used to be a morning runner. i either slept in my clean running clothes or had them laid out. i did wear the sports bra because i don't want to argue with it in the morning. and then i literally slid out of bed and whispered "outside" then the dogs start bouncing and whining and licking and then i am awake to poke my contacts in my eyes and put the dog harness on. slam some mountain dew and out the door.
now i'm an evening runner. i like it better but life happens and i miss more runs than i would like. or i get lazy.6 -

I decided to stick with him for the last 2 miles to provide encouragement thinking I was being nice. The final turn before the last 1/4 mile to the finish he says to me "I can't let you beat me even though I know you could. My buddies are waiting for me." I was flabbergasted. We started to run to the finish - after about 50 feet he says "I don't have anything left - I can't run" - so I kept going because he'd really pissed me off. I ran through the finish, waited for him to give him a high-five - he wouldn't even look at me. I should have shouted "not only did you get beat by a woman - you got beat by a 60 year old woman - jerk" - but I didn't. I just picked up my medal, my cold pizza, and told my husband the story who also fumed about it.
God, some guys can be such eejits. Good for you and congratulations on a good race. I did a 5k earlier this year. Like your half it was a small race with 59 entrants. I ran it really well for me and finished fourth over all and was the second placed woman. The youngish guy who finished fifth behind me was desperate to catch me at the end but I managed to hold on. I heard him later on his phone kvetching to his friend how he'd been beaten by "two old women" and it wasn't fair. The fact he'd also been beaten by two men obviously didn't matter.
I think we all have a story like the two above.
To me it's an indication that they haven't been involved in a group run - or training with a group where you reach out and support a fellow runner when they are going through a low point. I have also experienced the opposite where a runner catch's up to me and helped drag me in to the finish. They probably sacrificed a minute off their time but didn't care. That's why I will always try to pull other runners along.
This weekend I had > 30 running friends at differant events.
Canmore AB Griz 50k trail - the last 2 in the group ( their first Ultra ) were run into the finish by the whole gang. A great video of the support from the group. Called themselves the Blister Sisters.
Kelowna BC Marathon - 1 lady BQ'd 2020
Victoria BC Marathon - 3 ladies BQ'd & 2 Guys BQ'd 2020 caveat - based on today's BQ time.
11 km Riverbank Loop last night. Legs were tired from swimming earlier in the day and a lot of late fall garden cleanup. Still felt good once I got through the first 2km. Wind out of the east so it is blocked by trees most of the time so a nice evening run.

@sarahthes Snow?!?!?! SNOW!!!!?!? It's currently 82 degrees F here.
Although, it is supposed to get down into the 40s by the weekend. Gotta love October in Chicago.0 -
@biketheworld I was all about Altras until I tried Hokas. They are my new favourites. Very similar but the Altras slipped in the heel. I always found the Altras’ laces short as I had to do the runners’ lacing to prevent the slipping.
Like @PastorVincent I don’t have to buy wide, but I wear a half size smaller in both brands. My toes are much happier in them as they have room to spread out.
I have two pairs of Altras (one trail and road) and three pairs of Hokas (one trail and two road). The trails both have good waterproofing, but the Altras have better grip. Though the Altra trails also have a slight lip at the bottom of the heel, which I have found awkward when descending on mountains (hiking) or driving (it bends and can feel as if your foot is caught); I do not know its purpose.0 -

I am a morning runner - simply because there's no way I'd be able to do that after working all day. And so - knowing that's the only chance I'll get is pretty good motivation in itself. You say you're super cranky (boy do I understand that!) so remind yourself when the alarm goes how much better you're going to feel if you get up and run. It also helps to go to bed at night determined and ready to get up - no "I'll see how I feel." Also - I go to bed early (10ish) so that I've had enough sleep when the alarm goes at 6. Full disclosure - I don't have to be to work until 9 and it's only a 30 minute drive - no traffic. That all helps.3 -
Another 7k easy run today after a rest day yesterday. 44.5k toward my 120k challenge goal so far. And PastorVincent, every runner here is an inspiration.4

I’m still feeling effects from the half marathon. My quads are still a little sore.
I took the kids for a 4 miler yesterday, they rode their bikes and it was fairly slow with a bit of speed mixed in when I needed to catch up with them. Not quite a recovery run but I survived.
Today I decided to continue on with my training which meant 9 miles. Yikes. I told myself to just run slow and easy. It was hot and it didn’t seem to matter how slow I was going. After 5.5 miles I started doing a run walk. So glad it’s over. I have another 9 miler and 16 miler to squeeze in this week before my 5k race this Saturday.

@AprilRN10 Yay for no clot!
@PastorVincent You Nut(and I mean that in the most endearing way sir)!
@noblsheep for the cough usually decongestants twice a day along with some antihistamine is what I use for my inmates. Depends on when the cough is worse, what color is the stuff you're coughing up and if it accompanied by a fever. Also warm salt water gargles.
@amirahdaboss Nothing to it but to do it. I am a morning runner because after dealing with inmates and other issues for 12 hours, and doing it in an all concrete floored environment running in the evening would kill me(figuratively in this case). Plus it helps control my appetite for the rest of the day in a way that lifting alone does not always do(I tend to want to eat massive amounts of stuff when I lift). ETA: I lay out all my clothes the night before for running in a pile next to the bed, and I have my gym bag packed the night before, so all I have to do is grab my breakfast out of the fridge, toss it in my lunch bag and go.
@sarahthes Kinda jealous of the cooler weather, but definitely don't miss running in the snow . It was 72 with 95% humidity yet again this morning.
10/1 3.22
10/2 5.17
10/3 2.43
10/4 lower body/core circuit
10/5 3.4
10/6 9.4 Hilly miles, got turned around a bit, but figured out course for HM at end of the month
10/7 rest day
10/8 3.51
10/9 2.08 Approximately 1 mile to the bottom of the hill warm-up, then run up walk down twice(much longer hill than yesterday). I was going to do 4 times but had to head back to gym for wallet. Brother in law was stranded on 24W by Lasco, KY, had to give him a hand with tow/tire issues. Slightly different route back to gym. Cross train/lift tomorrow and short run(probably a one to one and a half miler), then 5 miler planned for Thursday.
Happy Trails everyone until tomorrow!5 -
@amirahdaboss I'm a morning runner. I'm usually asleep by 9pm, and my alarm goes off at 5:20. Like everyone else I have all my gear laid out the night before. Banana, inhaler and out the door. After a few weeks it becomes habit, to the point I wake before my alarm often. I run in the morning before the kids get up. It gives me more time with them. And it's already done for the day, done need any extra motivation after work or anything. Also we are heading into summer, and it gets way to hot tod run in the evening so I'm already prepared for morning runs.
Rest day for me!
I've already been thinking about what I'm going to do for next year - for the last 2 years I've had a year long goal, first was to exercise regularly for a whole year which I did with fitness blender and lost 20kg (around 45lb). This year was to maintain that loss and train for a half marathon in November. I'm about 6 weeks away from that goal.
Next year I have decided to run 4 half marathons. Hokianga half in March (@ContraryMaryMary you should come up for it), the Wellington half in June, i did that years ago and it was hell. I want a positive experience this time. The Auckland half in October and the kerikeri half again where I want to get a PB.
2020 I'm going to run a marathon, location yet to be decided.
So you guys are really an inspiration!13 -
October Goal: 20 miles run & maintain 15K training plan best to my ability
Was exhausted over the weekend due to family (uncle here from South Africa!) and donating platelets, chose to "sleep in" before work (to 5am) on both days and do my workouts after work instead. Today, I took a chance & did a dread-mill run on my 45 min lunch break. With changing clothes & a 2 min "shower", I was only 3 mins late back! I think I might have found a new way to spend my meal breaks when I need to do a 2 mile run. ( I never eat on my breaks, I usually take a nap instead)
AND the upshot of this, since I usually run outside (doing a run 6 mins, walk 1), I had to guess on the speed for the mill. At 1st, I did set it a bit high, and was only able to go 5 mins, walked 1. Dropped the speed down a bit, then decided to just run. And I did. The remaining distance. No other walks. Felt pretty damn good, to be honest. Spotify playlist helped out, too: "Humble" Kendrick Lamar, "Lose Yourself" Eminem, "Halo" Soil, "Painkiller" Judas Priest...
10/8 - 7.1 miles stationary bike (GCN HIIT video)
10/9 - 2.02 miles - 17.98 remain

Oct 13 - Think Pink Breast Cancer Bike Ride (30 miles)8 -
This morning I got to run 6.54 miles. It was pretty chilly and damp, around 45 degrees but not quite raining, but I finally managed to dress more or less appropriately for the weather! My hands felt a little clammy in the cheap gloves, but I’ve put myself on a spending hiatus while we sort out this whole “buying a house” thing, so they will have to do for now. The long-sleeved shirt I got at the expo was great - I love how low it goes, although my butt was still a little cold. I bought two and wish I'd bought another couple because I think I'll be wearing these all winter.
I tried an alternative to the visibility vest today and it worked pretty well, although I did rub the leg seam of my cheap capris a bit. I really need to adjust the vest to fit snugger, I'm just kind of got a lot on my plate right now. And in the meantime my new bright red windbreaker got here, so that will be a big help for visibility.
I don't think I remembered to post my race swag from this past weekend. I really love the look of the medal. My display is filling in!
It’s shaping up to be a bonkers month. I spent the morning scraping together earnest money and planning how we’re going to pull a down payment out of our butts while my husband lined up inspections. Division of labor! With that in mind, I’m afraid I am most likely not going to do the early shift of the memorial run. Hopefully someone else can step in.
Speaking of: is something going on with the spreadsheet? Yesterday evening I definitely put my name down for the last three slots but that got erased this morning and the slots look different now?

My good friend who I met in the walk to run program 3 years ago texted me after a long time of not being able to coordinate our schedules, and wanted to run. She has not been running much at all so I knew she would only be up for 30 minutes or so. I ran over to her house from mine, we ran 30 minutes and then I ran back home. It worked out well to give me 5 miles and it was so fun to catch up. And it's mostly downhill on the way home so that is always a nice bonus.

I know I said I would never do this, but I'm contemplating a half marathon. The Big River Crossing half plus 5k is in November. It's going to be the first race to go over the newly refurbished Harahan footbridge, which we really enjoyed walking after our last 5k. I could just do the 5, but the 5 a) doesn't go across the bridge, it just futzes around Tom Lee Park on the Memphis side, and b) doesn't have finisher's medals.
I know I'm not ready to RUN a half, but I regularly run 10k plus 3+ miles walking, which totals 10 miles-ish. Tack on another 3 walking and I'm pretty sure I could easily run/walk a half. The question is, could I do it in under 3 hours for the cutoff? We generally run 12 minute miles on our longer runs, but that's through the woods on a trail, and most of this will be paved, therefore faster. We walk between 15 minutes to 20 minutes. The pace needed for 3 hrs is 13:44 which would be cutting it close.6 -
An easy recovery run this morning, with 8 solo miles before meeting up with the group. The group consisted of just a couple of other runners today, and they ran just 4 miles at a much slower pace which suited me fine. It was a warm and very humid run (dew point 72F), so I was drenched in sweat as usual, but later on in the morning the expected cold front finally moved through and it pretty much rained for much of the rest of the day. Tomorrow's temps looks like my run will be in the mid-60s which should feel really good...fingers crossed that fall is finally here!

I guess I spoke too soon! My last class of the day ended up being canceled so I was able to squeeze in a run! I feel sooo much better. Anyways, I completed c210k week 11 day 1, which consisted of running 17 minutes and walking for one minute three times. What a rush! I think I may have experienced some sort of runners high(if that’s even a real thing) because I was feeling on top of the world!
Thank you for all the advice on becoming a morning runner. I think I’m going to start by fixing my messed up college student sleep schedule and take it from there!

I’ve been such a slacker lately! I worked late
last night, and tonight Inhad promised to take out the girl I mentor since I’d been gone for Wineglass/vacation.
The hurricane is supposed to be moving into middle Ga tomorrow, and I go on-call for work, so unless we have power and I can get in some miles on the treadmill at the gym, I feel like my week is going to be a bust.4 -
On a positive note though, I came back to work and found this above my office:
Then, hubby surprised me with this when I came home tonight:

It was supposed to rain all day today, so brought my gear with me to work thinking I’d go to the gym if soccer was cancelled. Rain held off and the field was ok, so they had practice so husband and I ran on the trail. It was windy and starting to cool off, but I wanted to try out a wind jacket to see if I liked that paired with a tank. About a mile in I was warm and had it tied around my waist. It wasn’t as windy on the trail, but glad that I was still warm enough in the shorts. I wore capri tights for my long run last Sat and saw some issues with those. It was a good night to try different clothing options as it turned really windy when we got back from the run and temperatures really started to drop. Timing worked out really well as it started pouring with lightening and thunder once we got home from practice.

@rheddmobile - "I know I said I would never do this" - famous last words. I say go for it. You already have the mileage - and the speed - don't be overly intimidated by the half. All you need to do is figure out what combination of walk/run to maintain the speed!
@marisap2010 - how nice of everyone to congrat you on your marathon! Nice necklace from hubs!
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 72/60 miles
Oct goal - 60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH6 -
I had hoped to maybe try to get in my 3 miles tonight (from Monday) but work was crazy and I am dead. Will try again tomorrow.
I hate gluten.7 -
I finally got a run in, 2 miles down! 48 more to go.11

Bahaha so true, I said I would never run another half, doing one in 6 weeks, and 4 next year. I also said I would never run a marathon, I'm starting to plan on one for 2020. I will never run an ultra (why did I just say that...)
ETA my first Half (7 years ago) I pretty much trudged the whole thing, I managed to run maybe the first 7km (the longest distance I had run to that point), then walked a bit then trudged the final 6, barely making it back. I did it in 3 hrs 7minutes. If I can do that in some of the worst weather conditions (torrential horizontal rain, no snow thank goodness) then you who can run 10k will be able to do it in less than 3hrs.
