Tomorrow back to C25K.5 -
Erf. I was thinking I would run at lunch today... but I did not plan for the high temp being HALF of what it was a few days ago. I only have hot weather gear with me. Ah well. *grumble*3

Hey, I didn't mean to bring up negativity regarding the mud avoiding trail runners. I just thought it was funny and ironic... That's all. They were probably new to trail running. They'll either get it or not, and either way is fine.
I must have missed that bit about the impression of negativity - but I agree that people that are new to trail's tend to tip toe around the mud/water hazards while trail hounds just pound straight through. Also I admit I get a little perverse child like joy in splashing through the mud/water - when you have size 12 paddles hitting the mud/water hole there tends to be bit of over spray .
One of our local trails ( Sleepy Hollow of Ichabod Crane fame ) had a creek wash out the crossing this spring. The inexperienced trail runners tend to climb down into the crossing, tip toe across on the rocks and then climb out. I take one step off the main trail and jump across at the narrowest point, it means my landing on the other side is right against a tree so aim carefully or eat branch's.@Elise4270 despite all the pain and suffering, you got an AG placement and your 2nd best 10K, so that is freaking awesome! Take some time to rest and heal. I also want to thank you for all your work organizing the Run For Dennis. That was a great idea, and brought this group even closer together (if that was even possible)
^^^^ What Scott said
@biketheworld Another unique Hill Training repeat is to find a long hill - run up as hard as you can until you tank out, turn around and run down 20-30 seconds. Turn around and hit the climb hard again. Adjust your Downhill time on each repeat until you find the most productive balance. It's just a differant form of Hill repeats. For me it's like I hit a reset button with the short downhill run. Also as you go to steeper grades the numbers all change.
Caveat - prior to doing the repeat cycle do a baseline run up the hill and record the time. The next time you get out for a run do the repeats. After a few weeks of repeats go back and do a 2nd baseline run and compare times/exertion level perceptions against your first run. Did the repeats work for you? is what you are trying to establish.
For downhill like @7lenny7 talked about short steps and getting into a flow - think high cadence and keep landing under your hip- don't reach down the hill with your feet and don't lean back this tends to get you on your heels and pretty much guarantees a foot will skid out and you will do a hard butt plant. This is good to practice on a hill that has a very gentle gradient - one that you could run down with your normal rhythm - this allows you to get a feel for high cadence/short steps on comfortable ground. Then move to a hill with a steeper pitch and keep working on it. I have 7 major hills on differant trails right in town, 3 I have mastered the other 4 are still works in progress.6 -
Only one more day of C25k! Although I won't be running a 5k next time if I'm only running for 30 minutes lol. The name of the program should be C230Minutes. I think after I do 30 min runs for a little while I'll pick a route that is 5K and start running that?
definitely agree c25k should be renamed - I don't know if ANYONE has ever run a 5k straight away at the end of it.
What you could do is start adding minutes to your runs, one minute at a time per couple of runs, until you hit 5k in distance. OR, and then after, look at doing a Bridge to 10k plan. Running further tends to be the way people get faster, as it helps build endurance. Certainly I think most people would recommend increasing the distance and therefore endurance before adding in things like speedwork drills. You want to get to a point where running for 30 mins or so is comfortable for you and you want to start pushing it further.
Actually, what you SHOULD do, is find a 5k race and sign up for it!!6 -

Lots and lots of cold rain. Woke up yesterday, looked out of the window, cold rain vs warm bed...nope, no contest, especially as I knew I had the VO2Max and LT tests coming up this afternoon and so I felt it would be better to stay rested. Same deal this morning, even if wasn't raining, I need stay well rested for the tests.
You use the same place i use for dxa and rmr, dexafit there on Trinity Mills? Grab me a Panera bread lemon cookie will ya.4 -

I will assume this means SNOW at the very least. Sure nothing else would stop you. Were we not all moaning about the heat very recently? I was thinking just this morning on my run how wonderful it was not to be too hot!

Well I'd like to do the 10k plan that comes after but....... I don't really want to be running an hour+ on weekday mornings because then I'd have to wake up even earlier! LOL! I like having plenty of time to lounge on the couch and drink my coffee Weekends would be fine for that. So I think I'll just try tacking on minutes for now. My sister told me a couple months ago that we should sign up for a 5k together and I was like... nahhh... but now I'll have to I worried about being annoying and slowing her down but I supposed we don't have to run together. She's probably a lot faster than me.6 -
10/1 = 3 miles

10/12 = 17 miles
10/13 = rest day

The temps dropped 42 degrees in several hours Sunday night. It went from a high of 90 degrees F to a high of 48 yesterday. Rivers are flooding near me and some schools are closed due to the heavy rains. Texas weather is just crazy.
I thought about going to the gym and using the treadmill but I just couldn't get up the motivation to torture myself like that.
October goal miles = 120 / 79 miles-to-date
Upcoming Races:
10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/22 = Georgetown Turkey Trot
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon
3/10/19 = ZOOMA half (potentially)5 -

No snow, but it is cold enough and all I have with me is a singlet and shorts! Cold is a much bigger issue for me for medical reasons. I can and do run in the heat (though I try to shift runs to cooler times of day) but I can only run in sub 40F with proper gear none of which I have with me.
Like I have said. I am much crazier than a runner should be but that is cause I know my own limits and am willing to abort as needed. I am not a true believer in "death before DNF" unlike some people in this thread.3 -

Fair enough! We have a cold/wet front approaching again with warnings of flash floods and storms for Thursday to Sunday. I'm looking at the weather forecasts and preparing my sandwich bag for my phone :-D

Re the Hal Higdon half marathon plan: I see the mileage as a conservative minimum aimed at getting most people to finish without hurting themselves. I’ve been using the program as a rough guideline for the last couple of months, but running higher milage than recommended because I was confidant that my body could handle it. I also mixed in some casual speedwork, again because I’d learned that my body is up for it. Long story short, @eleanorhawkins, I don't think you need to worry about the plan being low mileage, and could probably be fine increasing the distance if you continue to recover well, or sticking with the recommendations if that works better for you right now. Don't underestimate the impact of not sleeping well!
@Avidkeo: I've gathered from my research (and very limited experience!) that most beginners don't need much taper for a half if your primary goal is finishing. I ran 10 miles on Sunday and plan to average another 4 miles a day for the next three days, then take two days off before the half on Sunday. Given my experience with my half last month, I’m pretty confident that will be fine. I'd only run 9 miles when I did that, but have run 10-12 miles 3-4 times since then, partly because I wanted to and partly in the hopes that my second half would be a little less of a mind-game in the last few miles. Plus, now I know for sure that I can recover from that distance in a day or two, and run it on only a day of rest. My primary goal is to finish so I'm not planning much of a difference in strategy between it and my long runs.girlinahat wrote: »

Hah, this is how I felt about C25K when I started running last year - "I have to do a half hour on weekdays? Forget that!" I pretty much stuck to 10-15 minutes on weekdays and a half hour on weekends until this spring when I started a more flexible job working from home and got bit by the running bug super bad. Now I'm trying to dial my weekday runs back under an hour!

@shanaber we've been to the Tillamook Cheese Factory years ago. As we left the factory, full of cheese and ice cream, we passed a herd of cows and our youngest son, who must have been about 3 or 4 at the time yells out, "Bye cows, thank you for the cheese!!!". It's become a family thing and we still say that when we pass cows on road trips. I sure hope you get your foot problem sorted out soon!
@juliet3455 good points about hill running.
@workaholic_nurse great score!
Kody & I ran 5.98 miles last night. On the way home from work I was coming up with all kinds of excuses not to run...Tight and sore lower calf, very tired, feeling like I was getting sick, it's kind of cold and windy and I've got the chills, I have a lot to do at home, I need to recover from my last race and rest for my upcoming race...blah blah blah. I had convinced myself not running was the right choice.
I got home and saw that hopeful, expectant look on Kody's face and forced myself to get ready for a run. He needs the workout anyway to get ready for pheasant hunting next week, so I can't let him down. It was upper 30's (F) and windy, but I stuck with shorts, thin long sleeve shirt, a buff and thin gloves. I've decided I'm going to see how low I can go in shorts this winter. This turned out to be perfect for conditions.
The pain and tightness in my quads went away after a couple of miles. We had to stop several times to pick up poop and I was running slow anyway, so the pace was low, but pace is never a concern when I'm running with Kody.
In the end I'm really glad I went. I felt much better afterwards.
I'm starting to get excited about my race this weekend. It will be my first timed race and I'm not really sure what strategy to employ. I know I'll be doing a LOT of power hiking during the 12 hours so maybe I'll just hike the first 5 mile loop as a warmup? Or run the flats and downs and hike the ups? Or just go with the flow and do what I feel like at the time? Probably that last one.
After 6 hours you are allowed a pacer. I don't need or want one, but my oldest son will be back from college on fall break so I've talked him into coming out and joining me for a lap. Somehow he thinks it's a 3 mile loop and I'm just going to let him keep thinking that. I told him to bring beer for us to enjoy after his loop. Put that fake ID of his to good use.

On the HM training plan, distances and taper... I know many runners who never run 13.2 miles in their training before a HM, often making 10miles their max and do just fine. I eventually did 12miles before my first but was told by my running friends who signed me up for it that if I could run 10 or 11 I would have no problem running a HM and they were right. At that time I was not following a 'plan', I didn't know they existed. I was just running to run and did a longer run on the weekends gradually adding distance. Now I generally follow the Hal Higden plans.
For taper, years ago I found this article in Runners World and I still use it loosely (I run M-W-F typically and for 45mins). I had a bunch of people tell me I didn't need to taper, it was silly to taper for 'just' HM, etc... but I found it worked for me to rest some but not too much before the race. It depends on you, how your body feels, etc..
@garygse, @kgirlhart, @amymoreorless - I have been thinking about you and any others in Texas with all the rain and flooding there!
@PastorVincent - a little cold is going to keep you from running? C'mon! 😬
@mbaker566 - hope the foster pup is doing better with the crate training! Keep dodging those curve balls! ETA - I love your puppy pictures!
I am still not running... it is making me twitch I think 🤣 and I am sure I will not make my goal this month... well maybe I could if I count the miles from the stationary bike - ha!8 -
@PastorVincent - a little cold is going to keep you from running? C'mon! 😬
Oh, I have run with a cold many times. If that was the issue, I would be heading to the gym right now.

The weather predicts to be up to 50F when I leave work, so that is my plan for now but that time slot is tight due to company coming over. Might not happen. Tonight I will repack my gym bag to have cold weather gear in it. Well, I will probably forget, but I will try!0 -

Thanks @shanaber! My immediate area is currently soggy but okay. There are just a few road and creek crossings closed due to flooding. However, an hour south from us is being evacuated due to the river flooding. A bridge just collapsed from all the water.

@hesn92 Woo hoo you're almost finished with C230Minutes. I'll have to remember that when I get closer to finishing.
I appreciate the commentary re; HM training plans. I'm only in my third week running again, not even running 5 minutes at a time yet....... and looking at the different plans thinking, hmmmmmm. I'm not sure if this is wise. LOL5 -
Rest yesterday; easy 7k today in preparation for Sunday's 5k race. Up to 83k toward goal of 120k. Temps Sunday are supposed to be in the high 30s F; debating whether to dress light for speed (not that I have much) or heavier for comfort. My goal is to be under 32 minutes, which would be a PB. AG place would be nice, but I have no idea who will be running. Just going to try to do my best and what happens, happens.5

@zeesparrow meh, why be wise when you can be awesome (within reason and with a sensible, doable plan for it of course ;-) )

Thank you, @shanaber !!! I just ordered the "Lighthound" LED dog harness! Last week I was just thinking that I needed to get a better lighting solution for Kody. I had been hacking a few lights around his collar but I decided they were not bright enough and did not have 360 visibility. I had found an LED collar I was planning on buying for $20, but the one from Noxgear looks much better, and at $40 after the coupon, it's affordable. Thank you!!0 -

My coworker got something like that (or that?) as a gift from her daughter a while ago. Hers didn't work. Do you know if these are reliable? I'll go buy one for me and each of my dogs and then tell my husband it's his birthday gift to me this year. haha1 -

Yes, thanks @shanaber for your thoughts. I am headed for Peachtree City, GA tomorrow morning...leaving all this cold rain behind me! Will have a couple easy runs with the bro during the week, then the PTC Classic 15K on Saturday. Weather should be perfect: mid 50's, light winds. Not looking to PR due to rehab, but looking forward to a nice run with family. Y'all have a good week of running!!!5 -

For September we had 13.56 inches, last 14 days we've had 9. And yes, its supposed to rain again today.
Just to compare, last year we had 1.28 inches in September and 2.13 in October.3 -
