I'm Disappointed

I'm new here and have no prior dieting experience. I picked this app because of my undertaking for calorie counting and limiting daily intake based on a conservative long term weight loss goal. The MFP database is clunky but ok I guess, but the community here does not seem even remotely interested in calorie counting. I see endless discussion of recipes most of which look horrible, and things like suggestions of how to squirt yogurt on a chocolate brownie or use cauliflower instead of bread, etc. All without any actual discussion of calories.
The closest thing I found was a discussion on whether to weigh shrimp tails or the oil the shrimp are cooked in.
Counting calories at the moment of consuming them, or immediately thereafter, is a training discipline to psychologically connect the weighing and counting with the food choice decision and thereafter results in better food choices. Doesn't anyone here care about that? I read for an hour last night and couldn't find a thing. What gives?

Which threads at you reading? I see calorie discussion all over the place.26

I don't know what your reading but I've gotten a ton of helpful advise and motivation from the forums.
Its all how and where you look at it I guess .13 -
1. If you don’t see a conversation centered on what you specifically want to discuss concerning calorie counting, then you start a thread of your own on that topic, in the appropriate area.
2. I don’t really see how you could read the forums for an hour and not come across people discussing the best ways to count calories and connect it with their food choices. It’s constant. Did you use the search function?
3. If you don’t like discussions of low-calorie recipes (which, if you’ve read the threads, often are the result of people counting calories and discovering that they make their best choices when they substitute some low calories foods for certain high calorie foods), then there’s nothing wrong with scrolling down to a different conversation.15 -

What, exactly, are you looking for? The calorie content of pretty much anything you could imagine is right there in the database. There are lots of threads about what people are eating for whatever meals or snacks all over the forum (often more than one thread about the same thing). No, people aren't going to break down every individual serving size and calorie count of every little thing; it's for inspiration/ideas. If you want specifics, ask them. Use the search function, it has helped me a lot of times. And ask a question if you have one. There are SO MANY helpful people on here.11

search - there is a ton of posts on this topic.
"food and Nutrition" is not the only forum in the MFP Community; broaden your travels to include all the forums; even if you don't think you're interested in a paticular topci, there is useful stuff to be read all over the place.

I generally lurk around General / Food / Fitness and I see nothing BUT calorie counting discussions. If you're in chit chat or getting started or whatever you're gonna see a lot less focused nattering.11

not sure what threads you are reading.
and i also rarely log at the time i eat. i pre-log my day for planning purposes. i may make modifications as needed when i do eat but generally pre-log daily so i know i will be on track or not. not sure how logging WHEN you eat is more or less helpful.2 -
There are dozens and dozens and dozens of threads, posts, mentions of the importance of calorie counting. What exactly are you looking for?1

OP, it's very helpful to filter out chit chat and fun & games subforums from the recent discussions. Go to the main forums list page and click the gear icon next to the forums you don't wish to see. Check 'unfollow.' Then go to recent and under 'view' choose 'following.' This helps clean up some of the less pertinent topics if you're browsing by recent.5

One of the fabulous things about calorie counting is the realization that you can control your intake and therefore weight without sacrificing those things you enjoy about food. Discussing a wonderful new chocolate dessert is not the antithesis of a health diet, it's can easily be part of one. Realizing that is liberating for many who have found a way to enjoy those delectable foods as part of their endeavor to become for fit and healthy overall. It was the key to my success in weight loss and improved body composition.
There are countless threads here on counting accurately and improving macros for health and satiety. There are also numerous ways to go about eating healthy; all regularly discussed and argued about on these forums.7 -

This. I filter out Recipes too, as it's not something I want to be reminded about. I go in there just when I'm specifically looking for something.
I spent a lot of time trying to learn how the forums and how the food log worked before passing judgment.7 -

I have Introduce Your (shame on me, but I just am not a 'welcome to the forum!' kind of person), Gaining Weight (not applicable ), Recipes (ditto you), and Challenges (they annoy me) filtered out along with Chit Chat and Fun & Games.
I'm sure I blundered around a bit when I first joined 7 years ago, but thankfully nobody seems to hold that against me any more8 -
Ha we are all confused. I count calories and pay attention to macros. Down 70ish pounds. Not kept, paleo, low carb0
