After doing a load of dodging and weaving, I thought never mind, I'll be able to overtake a few more people once we get on to Commonwealth Avenue. They don't close the road (that's only done for the marathon) but the cycle path is coned off for the runners and it's pretty wide. Except we've had lots of snow and it was all shoveled into the bike path which meant we were all running in single file and there was no way of overtaking.
And if that wasn't bad enough, my Garmin decided it couldn't find a GPS signal, so I was running by feel and trying to guess my pace. All I knew was that I wasn't as fast I usually am. My time was a good minute slower than I had planned and I came 5th in my age-group. If I had started nearer the front and hit my stride earlier, I'm pretty certain I would have placed and would have been in with a shot of first place.
Ah well, it was still good fun. And I got a very nice finishers' medal.
It seems like "fun" 5ks which attract a lot of non-runners always have this issue! Why do walkers ignore the announcement to line up at the back? My theory is that walking causes deafness, or maybe low I.Q. I've started just lining up at the front. I have a few truly fast people pass me, but it's easier for them to pass me than some walker who would not pull to the right, etc.0 -

Child and husband-free, I took a very long (and humid) walk this morning along my regular running route to help loosen my legs. Unsurprisingly, there weren't any photographers at the tops of the hills, so the first photo is from a few kilometres in, and the second (the river ford) about 2km from the end. The third is just after I crossed the finish line - the woman I'm chatting to had twisted her foot about the same time I did mine, a little further down the same descent, and we had limped the final 10km commiserating and checking on each other as we passed every once in a while (she was better downhill, I was better going up).
And no photos of bling as this race is old school and the only ones to get medals were the winners - overall male and female winners in each of the four events. Nobody else. We just got to drive the 2.5 hours home in a state of happy and aching exhaustion!!!
Dude. Check out the blood pouring down the leg of the lady behind you at the river crossing! My ex-Ranger husband's remark: "Those people are doing that and they aren't even in the Army!"6 -
@PastorVincent If you know someone with a Costco card, I've had good luck finding Cold Gear stuff there.
My husband gets weird welts sometimes which turned out to be a stress issue - it's an autoimmune thing. They come and go. It does sound like the laundry swap over is the most likely culprit in your case.0 -

I haven’t posted in days and I’m over 400 posts behind. I’m sorry I haven’t kept up with y’all!
I wanted to pop in and give you a race recap of this morning’s race!
The weather was perfect in the 40ies and sunny. I’m glad I didn’t overdress even though I was questioning my choice. I stuck with the long sleeve tech shirt we got in our race packet.
I was in corral 2 and decided to stick with the 2 hour pacer. Well adrenaline and dodging and weaving around runners meant I got ahead of him. Side note, there were two of them. One dressed as a turkey and one dressed as a chef complete with a big (fake) cleaver.
I felt pretty good running around 8:30-8:45 pace, but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to finish at that pace. Around mile 10 I started slowing down a bit, but all my miles were sub 9!
This course had a billion turns which made the run long. I crossed the finish line at 13.4 miles and I was purposely trying to run tangents and stay close to the curb around turns instead of taking the turns wide.
The best part though is I still PR’d! 1:57:26!! Garmin says I ran 13.1 in 1:55:00. I’ll take both!!
I was spent at the finish line and almost immediately my stomach started cramping. It’s been several hours and my stomach is still revolting against me. I think I heard someone describe it as a freaked out squirrel trying to claw its way out of my intestines. Why does this happen?! I’ve done much longer runs, albeit much slower with no issues.
This is so you can see how many turns there were!!

Congrats on your PR @zdyb23456 ! Holy smokes that's a LOT of turns!
I ran today after 5 days rest for my lower back. It's still a little touchy but the run was great. We were SUPER slow and careful, checking in on how my back felt often. Each time the dogs wanted to stop and sniff, I let them. So.. not exactly a C25K workout but I'm really happy with how it went. I think I'll just keep going by feel for a little while, rather than try to follow the plan exactly. I'll consider myself a graduate once I'm up to 30 minutes running. Today was ~35 minutes total for 2.17 miles including warmup and cooldown.
November total: 13.78/28 miles

I am a slow runner and ALWAYS stay far from the starting line. I have only once placed in the top 3 of my age group. I do stay far to the side, too.
I absolutely HATE when you are trying to pass someone and it is like man on man defense with them not letting you pass.
My second pet peeve is the girlfriend groups that run(trot) 3/4/5 wide and take up the entire lane. This makes me want to strangle someone. 😣
Good job regardless!!9 -
@zdyb23456 ! Great job on your HM! Congrats on your PR!!! You killed it.0
-
@ContraryMaryMary - your photos are beautiful!!! I’m still learning folks here. Are you in NZ?
Yes. Waihi gorge is a couple of hours south from Auckland where I live.1 -
Well.... I should have dug out my yaktraks.... did really well on dressing appropriately for the weather. Had to take my hood off in the last quarter mile, to do a bit of cooling, but otherwise was warm enough on my walk intervals, and cool enough on my run intervals. But all the effort I put into wearing appropriate clothing, I did not think about the surface I would be running on. Friday: freezing rain (thus trying to avoid slick spots in the dark.) Saturday: friggin cold and snowing. Today at run time: sunny and 28-30. So, ice covered in just starting to melt snow. On legs that did squats and heavy deadlifts yesterday. Yeah, my 15 minute miles I’ve been working with lately, which is already a slog, were closer to 17 min/miles. But, I stayed upright. And I did 2.2 miles (which for the last couple months qualifies as a “long” run?? Ughhhh) But despite that distance, I think I will be remembering I have muscles I had forgotten about, tomorrow.9

eleanorhawkins wrote: »@ContraryMaryMary I think despite your account we all want to go run there after seeing those photos!
Yes, it is stunning. I've wanted to walk/run here forever (you can see parts of the walkway from the road on the other side of the river). The pretty gorge walk is why I signed up. It was only afterwards I discovered we only run on a small portion of the river trail, and the rest up the neighbouring hill. Here's my Strava map and elevation:

Well long story short, I haven’t run since Wednesday. This is probably the longest I’ve gone without running since April. I don’t think I’m going to run today, but I sure hope I can get out tomorrow.
As I’ve mentioned, it’s been an intense couple of months. I bought a house on Wednesday, my first and my husband’s second (condo before we met, ended badly, yay mortgage crisis). It was a lot of work getting financing and I handled most of it myself as my husband was busy working on the midterms. But we made it to closing after a ton of stress and I was just hoping to hang in long enough to deal with the company we had coming to town this weekend and our move on Tuesday.
Yeah, right.
So on Friday I picked up my mom for brunch and groceries, as we do every other week. After brunch she wanted to go see the new house, so we swung over for a quick walk through. She couldn’t make it more than 5 minutes without stopping to catch her breath, and by the time we were back to the car couldn’t get a full sentence out. So we went to the ER instead of groceries.
Mom has been in the hospital since then (I know it’s only been two days but it’s been a REALLY LONG two days). She’s okay, except for the heart failure she’ll now be dealing with for the rest of her life. She’s only in her mid 60s and has good innings ahead if she can clean up her *kitten* and take care of herself, but of course her lack of doing so thus far is why she’s in the hospital right now.
About half of our dozen expected weekend guests canceled for various reasons but we still made it to our dinner and show last night (MST3K live anniversary show, good times). Good times but exhausting under normal conditions, which these are anything but.
I am so far out of spoons that I’m daydreaming about how nice it would be even to have some dirty spoons I could rinse and reuse. The movers are coming on Tuesday. I’m told that is two days from now. I’d really love to run between now and then, but again, I’m so far past being okay that I feel good that I’ve just been managing to get out of bed in the morning.14 -
@zdyb23456 wooo hooo well done! and yikes that's twisty!
@BruinsGal_91 yeah walkers always seem to be so oblivious. and honestly I think runners who walk the final bit are just as bad, taking up the whole sidewalk. Just move over.
I chickened out this morning and didn't run. I woke up at 4am and it was pouring with rain, and my back was really really sore. so I turned off my alarm and went back to sleep thinking if I woke at 5:30, I'd go out (I often wake before my alarm), and if I don't sweet as, I really need the sleep. I woke at 6:10am. and I feel so much better for that extra sleep. BUT my back was so sore, I couldn't twist to the right, and taking deep breaths hurt. So kinda glad I didn't go out. I think its from sleeping funny on Friday night.
I went and saw our physio today (he works across the corridor from me, so can just pop in). He confirmed I've twinged something in my thoracic spine - I get T4 syndrome anyway - so he did a little bit of gentle manipulation and now I can actually turn to the right and breathe properly. Ill keep doing my gentle exercise today and it should get better.
I will definitely go for a run tomorrow. Its going to rain all week apparently, though we go away Wednesday to visit family and attend a wedding. I WILL be taking my shoes etc with me. I am going to run the 10k course I did the first time I ever ran it, and see if I can PB.

Remember @avidkeo, they recommend a day's rest for every mile you run in a race - so that means taking it easy for 13 days. Running is all good, but keep it slow and/or short, especially if you're feeling a bit niggly after your event. It's worth it. Me, I could go back to bed right now!!6 -
Hang in there @MegaMooseEsq. Hoping things improve for your mom and everything else you've got going on. Hope your move goes smoothly and you can relax a bit after that!
@ContraryMaryMary that's quite an elevation map.
@hanlonsk - yeah, I bet those legs are going to be feeling it after that slog. Good for you for getting it done.
@zdyb23456 awesome ob on you half marathon PR! Impressive time! Hope your stomach squirrel settles down.
@BruinsGal_91 good job on your Turkey Trot. Sorry it was frustrating to weave through and you didn't get the time you wanted.

I'm back home to a winter wonderland. Probably 8-10 inches of snow on the ground and currently snowing big fluffy flakes. I went to yoga this morning and then decided just to hit the treadmill today instead of figuring out where all my winter running gear is and where might be clear enough to run. I felt good today and was consciously making an effort to work on my stride a little, including leaning forward and thinking about the legs moving like a wheel rolling forward. I think it definitely worked to increase my pace a bit. My Garmin seemed to think I was running much faster, and clocked me at my fastest 5k ever including an 8:26 mile. I don't think so. But in any case, I have felt really good running the past few days and am encouraged by that and am not having any ankle pain.
Upcoming races:
11/22/2018 FM Turkey Trot 8k, Fayetteville NY
12/8/2018 It's a Wonderful Run 5k, Seneca Falls, NY
1/13/2019 Chilly Chili 5k, Cazenovia, NY
3/10/2018 Greek Peak Winter Sprint Spartan Race, Cortland NY (not yet signed up)
5/5/2019 Mountain Goat Run (10 mile), Syracuse NY
6/2/2019 Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon, Niagara Falls, ON

@BruinsGal_91 Great race despite the other runners. I have learned to line up with the to runners. I am often only a stride or two behind the starting line. I sprint out with them, and then pull to the far outside, dropping back to race pace. This has gotten me PR after PR and free from the chaos that is the normal popular 5k start. I pretty much tell everyone to line up much closer than you think you should be, because everyone else is doing it.
@zdyb23456 PR!!! W00T! THERE IT IS! YAY!!!
@MegaMooseEsq Ugh. Sorry, take some "me" time and recover. Ask your partner to run defense for a little while.
@ContraryMaryMary I would run that! If could only find someone to sponsor me and cover all expense including lost time at work... not likely!
2 -
No run today, as planned, but glad it was planned. I doubt I could run anyways. I too am dangerously low on spoons. There needs to be a spoon library where you can borrow some in a pinch.1

You totally should, although you’d have to do the full marathon distance to justify the expense!
If you’re really clever, you’d come for a few weeks and do three or four different events - we have so many awesome ones on at this time of the year.3 -
