@PastorVincent is that your only shirt? Would a different shirt give those welts a break and let you continue to run? I'm sure you've already considered it.
It is my only cold weather shirt. Possible issues at this point:
1) The shirt is fine, and it was the top layer I had on that was a problem but I have run in that combination last year without issues
2) The shirt is too big for me. I have lost weight but did not think that much
3) The shirt is worn out.
But my back right now is an angry red mess. So I need to think of something. Might have to run with summer gear on the dreadmill for a week. Not sure. Once back is better I plan to go for a run with only the one shirt and see how things go. That will at least eliminate #1.

@PastorVincent the long term solution is clear. Buy more running gear! More cold weather tops in particular.

@pastorvincent as someone who ends up with weird contact allergies... have you changed any laundry substances in the last year??
Laundry soaps, deodorants, etc for me can be ok for a while, until they aren’t. It isn’t always a first time use reaction, sometimes it will be a cumulative effect (which long sleeves vs short sleeves.... or layers adding weight, and thus contact, can be the last straw on that cumulatively effect, for me).... and once those things aren’t ok.... it takes a while for skin to be happy again.
I had one a couple years ago... I still don’t know if it was the laundry soap I had while traveling, or the deodorant... or a combo of the two along with heat... but I finally had to get a prescription strength make my skin happy again cream to get rid of the welts, because it didn’t clear up after over a month of very careful product choice.1 -

That happened to me too with my back pack freaking hurts especially during a shower!!! 🙁0 -
@Avidkeo Congratulations on your HM! Awesome time and loved the photos.
@ContraryMaryMary Wow, that sounded like a very tough race. Congratulations and well done!
@Scott6255 Congratulations on your sub 2 half! Amazing!
@Elise4270 Those Old Navy fleece-lined tights are warm and cozy. I preferred the more expensive ones I got from the running store only because the Old Navy tights seemed to fall down a bit since they aren't quite long enough for my legs (32" inseam). I'd say they are a great value and would be perfect for anyone with a regular inseam.4 -
I had three recovery runs in a row on the Garmin 10K plan I'm doing. I've completed four weeks and managed to do four strength training sessions every week as well. Feeling generally healthier, which is wonderful.
Switched up my diet, trying to increase protein. My stomach is adjusting, so maybe that affected me or it was just from running three days in a row, which was new, but each run felt slow and difficult. I needed quite a few walk breaks to stay in zone 2. Things were starting to feel easier last week. Hope I can get back to that!
Nov 15 - 1.94 30 mins (recovery) and lower body strength
Nov 16 - 1.97 30 mins (recovery)
Nov 17 - 2.97 45 mins (recovery) and upper body strength
MTD: 28.87 / 45 mi5 -

Thanks @RunRachelleRun ! I cant wait to buy needed running gear! I just have to get to the "need" part of it.. maybe the running part too. i think my inseam is 30...
I have some cheap target pants that are warm, maybe too hot, and the fit seems all wrong. So i usually run in my nike pants that cost a pretty penny but are worth it. Not fit issues.1 -

I did change soaps, a couple months to go. We moved to a new house and have a new HE washer and soft water so none of the old clothes washing practices worked at all. So I did consider this, but why would it ONLY be my back and not my arms and legs too?0 -

High up on my list to try is replace my Cold Gear top, but since I longer work for Dicks Sporting Goods and have to pay full retail now... ugh.0 -

Yay!!! I'll take easy! I'm sooo happy about that! I just gotta keep Eric from hurting himself on his first marathon mid December! I still need to get us registered. I'll get that done tomorrow.
I think we are leaning towards getting a room the whole week there. Eric pointed out that with both of our aches and pains (he has arthritis in his mid spine and neck) camping maybe more than our older bones can can take. I agreed. I think hes supposed get something booked this week.
I think your butt pain is likely high hamstring tendenosis. Or the beginning of. Yes. Overuse. I had it on show up on my MRI, butt it wasnt addressed... So seems best to rest it. Mine seems to flare up, but then everything flares up nowadays - look at me. I'm 85. Get a good hiney massage and pamper that tush2 -
@PastorVincent - I’ve had it be only my armpits, only my hip, only my shins, only my back- and at least one time one time the only the armpits was detergent, and not deodorant... All makes “free” or “clear”..don’t remember what they call their fragrance and dye free version...HE washer pods... current house has an he washer, which I have also been trying to figure out... but so far *fingers crossed* the all pods have treated me like the regular detergent.

@PastorVincent - can you get DREFT up there. White bottle with a pink label that has a baby on it. It is hypoallergenic and made for babies. Considering how your pores open when you run, dermatitis could be the culprit.0

@PastorVincent Didn't you report an irritated back from a running clothing mishap a few days ago? Could it be that same irritation, not healing and being re-irritated when it would have been fine if the skin started healthy?
I get a small irritation where my HRM buckles, sometimes. Usually it happens with rain or heavy sweat and wearing the HRM for over an hour. But once it's irritated, the HRM re-irritates it under more benign conditions. I end up putting a band aid on that spot under the HRM until it heals up.
I understand what's going on with your back is probably bigger than a band aid; but you might try vaseline on the irritated areas before putting a shirt on. Then put a known non-irritating warm weather shirt as the bottom layer.0 -

Yes, I did, and that is healing, but this is the entire rest of my back. Also, I am wondering if that really was a clothing mishap and not just an early indicator of bigger issues. I am not posting a picture, but if I did you might think I had been whipped.
Coating the back in vaseline might work but is that safe for open wounds?0 -

That is really stinking odd. Hrm. I have never had any skin allergies before, but that can change. Bah.@PastorVincent - can you get DREFT up there. Yes, we can get Dreft. I think all major grocery stores in the US carry it. I could get that, but need to make sure it is rated for HE washers and soft water first. Currently, I am using Seventh Generation laundry detergent, their free and clear variety. I got it because it was highly rated for dealing with gym clothes.0 -
@PastorVincent With your long hair, you may want to also consider if you have changed your shampoo/conditioner recently. One or both could be causing irritation to your back.4
-
@mobycarp - I have the same issue with my HRM where the adjustment clip is. Instead of bandaids on me I ended up wrapping a piece of moleskin over the metal. It has stayed put for months now and I don't have to irritate my skin pulling the bandaids off.
Costco also makes a 'free and clear' HE laundry detergent.
@HonuNui and @Elise4270 - the only way I got rid of my high hamstring soreness was rest, not doing hamstring stretches and doing hip and glute strengthening exercises (glute bridges, side planks and dog leg raises, etc.)1 -
After an hour-and-a-half in an Epsom salt bath, some time with the foam roller and 10 hours sleep, I woke this morning feeling tired!! However, I'm happy to report that while my legs are still spent and do not like walking downhill at all, my calf which had me limping horribly at the end of the race yesterday, seems to be perfectly fine.
Child and husband-free, I took a very long (and humid) walk this morning along my regular running route to help loosen my legs. For once, I had my phone with me so I took some snaps (of the prettier parts along the waterfront, the rest is suburbia). I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing day. Chaos has subsequently resumed, but it's bedtime for small girls in an hour so I'll cope.Got a few photos from the offical event photographers which show some of the beautiful terrain we ran in yesterday. Unsurprisingly, there weren't any photographers at the tops of the hills, so the first photo is from a few kilometres in, and the second (the river ford) about 2km from the end. The third is just after I crossed the finish line - the woman I'm chatting to had twisted her foot about the same time I did mine, a little further down the same descent, and we had limped the final 10km commiserating and checking on each other as we passed every once in a while (she was better downhill, I was better going up).
And no photos of bling as this race is old school and the only ones to get medals were the winners - overall male and female winners in each of the four events. Nobody else. We just got to drive the 2.5 hours home in a state of happy and aching exhaustion!!!15 -

@ContraryMaryMary What an epic event! So glad to hear you're recovering well. Great pics.
Speaking of events... I just registered for my 4th HM in 5 weeks. Enabling enablers the lot of you!!!10 -
@ContraryMaryMary yay for recovering - slowly but surely!
Today I took it slow and chill. No real walking or anything. And apart from pain between my shoulder blades that switched from right to left during the day. Annoying and odd.
I've got everything ready for my usual run tomorrow. it feels odd now, I've been following a plan for months. Tomorrow is my first day without a specific plan. So plan for tomorrow is to go out and just see how I feel. Not going to do speed, but might do 6, might do 8,see how the legs feel.5 -
@ContraryMaryMary - your photos are beautiful!!! I’m still learning folks here. Are you in NZ?0
-
@ContraryMaryMary gosh what a great looking place to run!0
-
@ContraryMaryMary I think despite your account we all want to go run there after seeing those photos!
Forecast was nasty today, and (I have such an exciting life) I spent until past midnight last night engaged in an unexpected battle against headlice (my daughter's anxiety meant there was no way we were going to get any sleep if we waited until today to deal with them, so it was Saturday night party in the bathroom time!).
Decided I'd set the alarm for 8 and hope for the best, but woke up at 7.20 anyway so I got up and got moving. My plan recommended a 10k race for today but couldn't find any of them, so I just went and pretended on my own. Didn't actually rain but the wind was nasty, discovered I really don't like running into wind that was almost pushing me over backwards. Shaved 2 seconds off my fastest 10km time according to Endomondo, so all good.
Now I'm warm and dry, listening to the thunder and lightening right overhead, waiting for the power to cut out and being glad I ran before it started!
2/11: 7km
4/11: 11km
6/11: 7km
7/11: 5km
9/11: 7km
11/11: 13km
13/11: 8km
14/11: 5km
16/11: 8km
18/11: 10km
November goal: 125km. Completed so far: 81km7 -

My hair is nowhere near as long as it used to be. It bearly touches my shoulders now, and it has gotten thinner for some reason  - but I have not changed hair products at all recently.2 -

I definitely agree with that. It seemed the more aggressive i got with hamstring stretching, the worse it got. I think mine is definitely linked to hip strength and gait from well, probably lazy posture.0 -

Another great running day: 35 degrees F and no wind at all. Had a little tightness in lower back and hips, but nothing serious. Ran at a pace close to the faster end of my slow pace window, and ended up with my fastest 10k training time so far. Hope I don't lose what progress I've made when the weather gets too nasty for running.6 -
Ran my 5k turkey trot yesterday and I'm rather annoyed with myself because I could have done better than I did. There were about 650 runners and someone had very sensibly put pacing signs out so that people could seed themselves. Except I was probably the only person who heeded them and ended up stuck behind loads of people who actually only wanted to walk or run a darn sight slower than where they seeded themselves. Totally my own fault; I should have put myself much nearer the front.
After doing a load of dodging and weaving, I thought never mind, I'll be able to overtake a few more people once we get on to Commonwealth Avenue. They don't close the road (that's only done for the marathon) but the cycle path is coned off for the runners and it's pretty wide. Except we've had lots of snow and it was all shoveled into the bike path which meant we were all running in single file and there was no way of overtaking.
And if that wasn't bad enough, my Garmin decided it couldn't find a GPS signal, so I was running by feel and trying to guess my pace. All I knew was that I wasn't as fast I usually am. My time was a good minute slower than I had planned and I came 5th in my age-group. If I had started nearer the front and hit my stride earlier, I'm pretty certain I would have placed and would have been in with a shot of first place.
Ah well, it was still good fun. And I got a very nice finishers' medal.
