Well @pastorvincent, I am a bit older than you...long before PC magazine or PC's, we were playing a mainframe precursor to Dungeons and Dragons when I first started working in IT in the very early 80s. I hated AOL and never had an account with them. I also worked with graphical teletype machines for the scientific arm of one of the oil companies before PC's were really a thing. We did have a 'remote online terminal' that ran at 300 baud for anyone who remembers that and yes the very large floppy disks that were actually floppy A few years later I worked for a bank that had one of the first widely networked and interconnected ATM systems
Yeah, I am not that chronologically old yet. In 1983 when I got my computer start, I was in third grade. I started with the 5 1/4" disk and tape disks, never did the punch card thing though I have worked in FORTRAN and KOBOL and the like.3 -

Race Report:
We started at 6am at Reeds Island Park in Hilo. Our team members were Sookyung (my neighbor), Evita (who is the niece of another neighbor, and who is visiting from Manilla, Phillipines), @elise4270, Eric and me.
Sookyung took the first leg of 2.7 miles (in the dark...), handed off to Eric, then Elise, me and Evita.
Repeat x 3...EXCEPT, when we got to the summit, the route turned off the main highway to Wright road. The race was to end at Cooper Center, and on my last leg (remember, I'm fourth), I turned where I was supposed to....and Cooper Center was .25 miles away. Which means, somehow we were short a leg. I asked a passerby who told me the route continued on PAST Cooper Center, and the turnaround for last leg was much further up the road.
So, I called our driver (DH) .....who didn't answer. I texted him. While running. He called me. The call dropped. He texted me, "we are waiting at Cooper Center". Finally was able to connect and told him to keep driving up Wright road. He said "they are all walking to meet you so you can all finish together. "
NO!!!Keep driving.....but they didn't. I finally reached the handoff site for the last leg....and figured if they were walking to meet me, it would be awhile (since I had now run a mile past my scheduled leg).....so I kept going, made the turnaround, and finally ran into them all about .75 miles later....tagged Evita and she took off. Eric ran again, as he liked the terrain. The others kindly kept me company cause I was....done. DH finally came with the car, picked us up and drove us back to near Cooper Center, where we waited for Evita, and all ran together to finish...at 12:03.
At the first handoff, a local reporter was there and asked us a few questions. She stopped again at the second handoff, we told our story of Dennis, she took pics and names. We'll see if we make the papers!

3.02 is almost 5k, which is 3.1, so yes, a lot for a new runner! When you first start out adding mileage, don't worry about going fast. It's okay to be very slow, even slower than your walking pace for some people, as long as you are doing the gait of running. Speed will come naturally later!
Thanks for the insight. I will definitley keep that in mind. I am happy you commented because I was, earlier on, feeling a bit discouraged by my numbers and unsure if it was a normal speed for a newbie.
You will have gains and losses throughout your running career. Many of us only run races to treat them like tests to see how we are doing. VERY FEW of us in this thread run/compete with any expectation of winning.
Relax, stick with your program, and you can expect to slowly over time improve. Running you will find is more mental than physical.
Your mind will always want to runner slower and shorter than you really can. It is probably some trait left over from our hunter days. It was no good running down dinner if you were too tired to kill it or fend off predators. You need to learn to recognize this and push through it. That will take time.
For now, stick with it, relax, and do not compare yourself with anyone else. We are all at widely different places in our running lives.7 -
Finally well enough to head out for my first run of the year (well, the first anything of the year really) so:

And looking forward to going back to my usual routine as of tomorrow.
Also contemplating signing up to a series of races (Adidas city runs). I did one out of the 3 they put on last year and it was fun, although the final one falls on my birthday this year! I guess that would make the post run burger even better...11 -
Inadvertently ran 2 miles today! So that is 4.85/28.
I am finding the minimum daily mile really liberating as there is very little pressure, but I am running more than I would have done otherwise 😊15 -
Hi everyone. I want to prioritise running a bit more this year. I started running about 3 years ago with C25K. I completed the program and was still running regularly but without really any goal in mind. Usually I'd do about 3-4K round the block in the morning 2-3 times a week.
My friend then got me in to Parkrun (a free weekly timed 5K at the local park on a Saturday morning) and I decided to focus more on time. I really wanted to achieve at sub 30 minute 5K (probably quite slow for a lot of you but a real challenge for me) so I upped my running frequency and distance. I also signed up for a 10K last February where I astounded myself by completing it in 1:04. Spurred on by this I finally got my sub 30 minute 5K the following week. However, I have not been able to achieve this since and during the latter half of the year I was running less frequently and my time was creeping up until I was regularly coming in at around 33 minutes. Parkrun was becoming the only time I was running, and I found it really hard to motivate myself to run during the week.
I am determined to get back to sub 30 minutes so I will be upping my frequency to 3 times a week (2 weekdays plus Parkrun). I am also looking at doing another 10K later in the year because having a goal to work towards motivated me to run more regularly. I might also join a local running group because running with other people is what motivates me to do parkrun every week so I would love a chance to do this during the week. I just need to find one with slow people like me! So I want to use this group for accountability for my weekly runs and also to record my parkrun times and hopefully get a bit faster.

Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the January races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – First time this year I've had to skip messages because I can't keep up.
Yesterday morning I got up and it was 25° F out. But forecast for gun time was 41° F (+5°C). I dithered, and wore shorts under warm up pants, long sleeve tech shirt with a singlet over it, and a light running jacket. The idea was to make the call later whether I would run with or without the jacket, and I could put the singlet with the bib pinned to it over the jacket for the race.
Winter Warrior is held at Rochester Tech Park, the old Kodak Elmgrove facility. The course is a loop designed to be exactly one eighth of a marathon long, so the same mats can be used for start, finish, and laps. There is also a "no-cheat" mat on the short out and back on the far side of the course that was put there to fine tune the distance.
Got there with plenty of lead time. Helped move tables and chairs around to set up the VIP tent, which I have access to because I paced long runs for the training program. Went out and ran my warmup as a lap of the race course. Took note of the tangents; there are many opportunities to run good or poor tangents on the curvy roads in the business park. Ran by feel. Noted that the NNW wind was a bit stronger than forecast; I was actually chilly on the final northbound stretch. Dithered a bit more, and ditched both the warmup pants and the jacket for the actual race. That turned out to be a good call; at race pace I was comfortable in the temperature.
Given near perfect running weather, I was of two minds: Do I push for a sub-1:30 finish and possibly a PR, or do I work a little less hard and be more conservative about injury risk? Went out with the surge. Passed my friend who was targeting an 8:15 pace for the quarter marathon (2 laps) early, when my watch displayed something like a 5:45 pace. Yeah, starting line surge. Told him, "Nice 8:15 pace!" He said he was being good and deliberately slowing down.
First lap I ran near-perfect tangents. I remember 3 years ago, the first time the race was on this course, the people ahead of me ran lousy tangents the first lap. This year, the people ahead of me were more familiar with the course and ran good tangents. I saw 22:03 on the clock as I approached the lap. Too fast. I'd known I was running too fast during the lap, but couldn't seem to get myself to slow down.
That problem takes care of itself. Ran the second lap more sustainably. Late in the second lap a couple guys passed me quickly. WTF?
Oh, yeah. There's also that 2-lap quarter marathon. Turns out they were quarter marathon runners who ran the first lap a little slower than I did, then poured it on to finish. I can live with that. Saw 44:xx on the clock as I approached the second lap, notwithstanding the fact that I'd had a half lap of passing walkers and very slow runners.
Third lap was more effort. I made the executive decision that I wasn't going to push for a sub-1:30 finish, just run what I could. Now I'm passing runners who are faster, and it's more effort and planning to get around them. I notice that daylight makes a difference. In past years, this race started at 4:30 PM and the third lap would be in the dusk. In full daylight, I can see further ahead and better predict where the race flow will give me the tangent. It helped. Saw 1:07:xx on the clock as I approached the lap. The leader hasn't lapped me, so I met the goal of not getting lapped!
Fourth lap. As I'm approaching the first turn, I hear Ellen announcing the approach of the overall winner completing his fourth lap. (He ran 1:08:xx.) The fourth time up the little incline, it begins to feel like a hill; but it wasn't as bad as it has been in prior years. I lap a couple of runners who are savvy enough that they are running the same tangents I'm trying to run. In daylight, some of the slower runners are cheering me by name as I pass them. A mile left. Pick up the effort. The watch say I haven't picked up the pace. I know I've slowed down a lot.
Get to the finish, stop the watch. 1:30:48, which later reads 1:30:49 on Garmin Connect. Turns out net time was 1:30:48, gun time 1:30:49. Yes, I lined up right behind the guys I know will blow me away. I was 21st of 530 overall, 1st of 18 in the M 60-64 age group. If there had been masters awards, I would have been first men's master; but if there had been masters awards, chances are some faster 40-somethings would have shown up.

Post-race musings: I didn't run a PR, and I didn't break 1:30. But I finished feeling really good and walking comfortably. I don't think it will be a problem to go run 8 easy miles this afternoon. Top goal is to remain uninjured, and I'm meeting that one.
This was my 19th half marathon. This morning I looked back at times; this is my 3rd fastest half. It is a course record for me, and it is the fastest half I've run since I turned 60. I'm too lazy to do the calculations, but it might be my best age graded half marathon. Given my injury-free status, I'm very happy with my finishing time.

We always had a computer in our house and I started going online in middle school (early/mid 90s). We had WOW and AOL. I was laughing at my podcast yesterday during my race because they were talking about the early days of the internet in 2008. The guys are only a few years younger than me (maybe early 30s). They were talking about fandoms/comicon and how they used it before 2008 (livejournal anyone?) so I think they meant more how the internet is now but it was still funny to hear early days and 2008 together.6 -
@MobyCarp That's a nice medal! And I like your medal rotation. I need to come up with something better. I had all of mine displayed on a shelf on my desk but I've just tossed new ones on top and you can no longer see any of them. LOL5

On topic, I really need to run today. I ate way over my calorie goal on the trip home yesterday! I tend to get hungry when I’m sedentary for long. Running totally has been helping control my appetite. 🏃♀️9 -
Yesterday did the trick - today I WANTED to go for a run for the first time in weeks. It may have had something to do with knowing I had the time and daylight to go to my favourite place too, but that just made the run even more enjoyable. I loved every step and my heart wanted me to stay out there and run for longer, but my brain knew otherwise. There will be all the long runs of marathon training in which to do that!

Happy Long Run Sunday (if you choose to partake)! Today's schedule called for 12 miles, so I mapped a new route last night that took me uphill for 3 miles, downhill for 2, flat for most of 4 miles, and then back uphill for the better part of 3 miles. My legs are tired but my heart is happy. It was a beautiful sunny day, not too cold, not too warm... a great start to a new training cycle.

Congrats to @HonuNui, @Elise4270, Eric and teammates on your run for Dennis. Sounds challenging (I'm confused just reading about your last legs, way to handle it on the go) and you did an awesome job representing and honoring our own @KeepRunningFatboy. I was just looking at last January's thread and seeing him comment there kind of took my breath away.
Great job @MobyCarp on your half. Glad you had good weather yesterday! I'm always impressed by how you really use your knowledge of the course and other runners. Well done.
Going back a page or two, @RunsOnEspresso great job on your 5k! You'll get that lady next time
I'll stay out of the nerd fight (different kind of nerd, here, rather late to the online forum thing). And the down under fight. I'm all for more friends on all sides of the globe (I know a globe doesn't have sides but you know...). That will keep our discussion hopping (yes, kangaroo joke) at all hours! Gave some serious thought this morning to not running at all. Finally decided to try to do 3.5k; ended up doing 5.5k by modifying my usual training course. Running yesterday with my lingering cold/flu/whatever really took a lot out of me, but I was better today.

I read all the posts! Well, I read every post, though maybe not every word of every post.
My husband and I bought our first PC shortly after we got married. I can still hear the 300 baud modem sound. Years later, we played WoW together with his friends, our kids and their friends for YEARS! It was our family time, at least once per week (sometimes more) we'd all play together, questing, dungeon runs or raids. Ran our own semi-casual raiding guild for a couple years, but I never really got active on the forums. We've reactivated our subscriptions after an expansion or two but it's no longer the same.

@abowersgirl You mentioned feeling a bit discouraged by your numbers. I can relate oh so much, especially when reading some of the distances and speeds the others post. Just yesterday I was considering reporting in km rather than miles, because the numbers are bigger! lol But I was also considering reporting my paces, which I've not wanted to do until now. I'm so much slower than I want to be, especially if I stick to a pace where I can converse or sing. But I'm going to do that from now on, because maybe it will encourage someone else who runs slow too. Now I just need to get the motivation to go run against the ~20mph winds that are blowing through the trees outside. I'm a little worried I'll be running backwards if I try. haha8 -
so week one was a bust - I would say about a total of 3 miles - all intervals during my regular workout classes. I need to figure out the best way to working running in to what I am already doing.
Right now I am doing bootcamp classes 4-5 days a week and two yoga classes (all mornings 5:30 weekdays and 7:30 weekend). I was thinking I could run evenings of the yoga classes but that just did not happen this week. I think in another week it will be easier once my daughter goes back to her afternoon training program, then I will have some time between coming home and having to start dinner right away. My issue then will be trying to go slow so I can build up and not burn out.
I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts and reports - reminds me of the old Training Peaks forum I as part of years ago training for my first Chicago marathon.8 -

And back to reality at today's 5k where I was 14th in my age group. Definitely more my usual spot (despite running faster today!) It was overcast and foggy this morning. I thought it'd be colder than yesterday but it was not so I got a little warm. The course was mud so yay for remembering the area and putting on tail shoes. Instead of going around I ran right through. Most people would slow down and go around. I just went right through. Well, a few spots I went around because it was easier than the large muddy puddle on the sidewalk (the mud here when wet and on a sidewalk is super slick - I didn't feel like falling). Not a PR but it was on Garmin/Strava (neither of which I was using during my actual PR). The route started with some rolling hills which I seriously attacked. It made it harder on the straight, long part to keep up the pace/energy but I wanted to get away from all the slow people that start at the front (I mean, not that I'm fast. I proudly wear my mid-packer hat).

Overall 115/249 Females 52/152 Age Group (30-39) 14/27

Her school was hosting a 5k and she wanted to do well in it( read that as beat a little boy who teases her). After the 5 k she quit running with me but wanted to go this morning said she missed running. So 2 miles and maybe I will get out for more because the weather is gorgeous today. That's 3.6 miles so far11

Is it too late to join? I just started back running and am taking it slow. Training for a 5k a d doing a couch to 5k/10k type programs. Today was my first run in about a year -- logged 1.87mi.17

Ran 3.3 miles with a couple of people from my neighborhood. I joined the MFP Strava group and then stumbled across a small group in my neighborhood. I only recognized 1 name in the bunch and the members range from pretty short distance runners to a couple who do super long distances weekly. I don't typically run with other people but I thought it might be fun to meet some of my neighbors and have a run a week that is a bit social.
So we met up for about 3 miles and I ran to the meetup to warm up a bit. It was fun and we actually talked the whole way, which really reinforced what so many have said on here about keeping a conversational pace. Since I'm usually alone, this was a new thing for me, but I was able to talk at my usual running pace without gasping for breath!
Overall fun, and I hope the group keeps going. It would be a fun way to get my Sunday run in.

I ran to the park and then ran the trail there before stopping to walk up the big hill back to the road (I just ain’t quite *there* yet with hills) and then ran awhile more before cooling down with another short walk. It’s so nice out i was able to wear my spring/fall gear, which is good because all my winter gear is currently in the wash! Oops 🤦🏼♀️ I only ran twice this week so I think I might try to fit a quick mile in tomorrow to fit my goal of 3 runs a week. I don’t make a habit of running two days in a row (because I’m new to this and in my 30s), but what could one mile really hurt. 😁8 -

Mine is 11 now but last year her pediatrician said it was fine. Definently make sure though at that age. My littlest one is 4 and not old enough for sure. He does do about a half mile walk with me though.5 -

For excitement, a little dog tried to bite me when I was passing on the sidewalk. I know these people and know they have an electric fence, so I wasn't paying attention, and was so surprised when it came all the way up to me and tried to bite. I don't think it broke the skin. Jeesh.10
