What nobody tells you about losing weight

...and having been more indulgent over the Christmas period how lovely it is to return to more appropriate quantities of food and drink. Having thoroughly enjoyed the chocolates, christmas pudding and yummy roast dinners etc etc how pleased I was to return to lighter, less rich food!! I decided to not 'compensate' for the indulgences by reducing my intake post Christmas and New Year but just to return to my normal practice and was delighted when, within a week any temporary weight gain had gone.30

Words will not fully describe the JOY of eating to live instead of living to eat--it's so WONDERFUL to live this way. Now when I eat and drink stuff, it's no longer a gobbling/cramming/swallowing whole food like it's no tomorrow, it's a relaxing, pleasant, enjoyable, taking my time JOY and DELIGHT.
It will be that way one day for you as well, perhaps sooner or definitely later, it will happen to/for you too (if it isn't already like that for you now).
This is a great one! It’s funny that I used to think that losing weight would mean I wouldn’t be able to enjoy eating my favorite foods any more. Now I feel like it’s the opposite. I actually fully savor and enjoy eating, both the healthy foods and the indulgences much more than I ever did before. Mindless eating and stress eating are really quite unpleasant. THAT’S the great truth that you need to know when you’re a stress eater.
I'm thrilled with your reply, thanks so much--what you've shared is so real and encouraging/inspirational too.4 -
That one day, sooner or later...you will NO LONGER even look at plus sizes and even sizes XL or Large when you're shopping. This may not sound like the big deal it truly is, but it's (looking at plus sizes/XL/large clothing--even though you no longer can fit those sizes) it's so wonderful to no longer be shopping/looking for "big/bigger" sizes--it's so very NICE.
That "habit or/and comfort" of looking at/for plus sizing/XL stuff, it's something that slowly disappears as you come to the place of accepting that plus sizes/XL and even Large size clothes are no longer for you--because they are just too big now. Even though some designer sizes and sizes from different countries maybe made smaller and a large may/fit like a medium now does on you, eventually you will no longer even search for size large(s). You will only be shopping for sizes mediums and sizes 12, then sizes 10 then 8's and lower. Absolutely humbling and WONDERFUL and AMAZING this will feel to you!13 -
Child pose in yoga used to be something I'd dread whilst everyone else raved about how it was the most relaxing part. With less boobs and tummy and being able to comfortable be in the pose its now my favourite part of the relaxtion bit of a session.22

Controversial here but: losing weight won't necessarily make you hot.
I got really thin in preparation for college and expected it would be like a weight loss commercial with people turning to look at me as I model-walked down the street. Spoiler: it didn't happen. Some people have the genetics (face and body) to be attractive at the appropriate weight, and some don't. Especially for women: no food or exercise choice is going to make your cup size grow.
It's all relative, and you'll feel your best at a weight where you are strong and healthy. Just do it for yourself, and don't expect the world to start revolving around you.
However, you can stuff a bra to the size of cantaloupes if you feel the need, while spanx can only hide so much.
Some people are unfortunate-looking no matter what size they are, and some are gorgeous even when obese. Speaking for myself I was a model (just a local model, but still) when young and slim, and I look like a pile of dirty potatoes when obese. Adding muscle also helps!15 -

The biggest lie they tell fat people. Being thin makes you hot and popular. Being thin fixes your whole life.
reality - You're still you just thinner. But now that you don't have fat to obsess over you have to learn how to fix your own life.

Yup! For me it was more like...I thought I couldn’t make friends because I was fat. I realized I actually have to make an effort.18 -

I wonder this about the vast majority of things people say they are going to do once they lose the weight.
I will go to the beach once I lose the weight! Really, why not just go now? I know quite slim people who hate being seen in their bathing suits, but the thing is, they aren't required at the beach.
I will start a weight lifting program once I lose the weight! Why not start now, rather than lose muscle, then try to build it up again?
I mean, if you are 300 pounds, you will probably think twice about horseback riding, but their are breeds that can handle even that. And I won't be trying aerial silks until my upper body strength to body weight ratio improves, but most things that people are waiting for just might make them happier right now.

People don’t realize that your wants and desires will never go away. Once you get that promotion, what then? Once you hit that goal weight, what comes next? Our ego is always thinking “if I can just get xxxx, than I’ll be happy.” But that’s almost never the case.15 -
Something else I never realized was I am much more comfortable saying the word fat. I would never say it when I was 200+. Now, I use it frequently, typically describing myself in the past tense.17

That when I lie on my side and all the skin and guts slide down to the mattress that I’d be able to feel what the back of my pelvis feels like, and the juncture of my femur and hip, and ribs... I’ve never felt my bones before!20

That my body shape has completely changed! 100 lbs ago, I was more pear shaped (but still had crazy big arms and shoulders). Now, I've lost all the bulk but have slender arms and hips. More of a triangular shape?
Also, I always told myself I was big-boned and large-framed. Turns out, I have a small frame. Who knew?20 -

I know just what you mean. I always thought I just had big hips and butt thanks to southern Italian genes, but it turns out I was just pudgy. Now my hips and butt are actually too small for the pants that hug my thighs. Turns out I was spot-on thinking I had big thighs 😆9 -

NOTHING fits (bras/undies, tank tops, pjs, pants, coats/jackets, snow pants, blouses, workout clothes, etc). Thank goodness I can drill new holes in my belts and my socks still fit! I don't have a decent thrift store close to me so I can get very little 2nd hand.
Seconded. Suggestions:
1) Any dresses or skirts you love: may be worth getting them altered.
2) Anything else you have in good condition: try shopping it to a thrift store or on Poshmark.
3) For basics, online fast fashion is your friend. I picked up a several nice basic shirts on Amazon for $10 each.
try thredup online? ... both to sell your too big items and to pick up new stuff.8 -
One downside: being significantly thinner than lots of people your age, and not being attracted to them.18

Put a pillow between your knees. It helps.
For the shoulder, it can also help to have a nice fluffy pillow that you cuddle, as it helps keep you from collapsing into your shoulder.
This!! I always have to cuddle a pillow now that I’m 60 lbs down. My boyfriend calls the pillow the 3rd wheel 😂20 -

We each have one. You signal that you are interested by removing the huggable. You signal that you are not interested by hanging on when the other one tries to remove your pillow.
Pillow fights are just one reason I say that we are five year olds with credit cards35 -
This was new, I was walking the dog yesterday and got hit by a gust of wind, it actually pushed me back a half step. It caught me off guard, 60 pounds ago a breeze never pushed me around!51

No one told me that I would be EXCITED for the weather to change so that I could wear outfits (in public!!!) that I wouldn’t have even worn around my husband before. ❤️😭 I’m so ready for shorts and tank top weather! I guess 76lbs will do that for you! Lol46

In a weird way, I kind of miss my “padding”. I’m not used to feeling my bones so much. When my boyfriend would put his head on my shoulder 60 lbs ago, it was cozy. Now it kind of hurts my shoulder because it’s so bony. He’s nice and hasn’t said anything but I’m sure he feels it too.17

Compliments can be weird. I live in a small town. I had one of the town employees tell me the other day that I'm "looking 100%". I've known him for years and he was genuinely being kind. BUT then he told me, "ya, I told all the guys at the shop, wow you've got to check her out!" Again, he wasn't being creepy or suggesting they "check me out" in a creepy way but knowing people are talking about me and how I look makes me soooo uncomfortable. It's happened quite a few times now that I find out that people are talking about my weight loss. Ugh. Better than talking about how much I've gained I guess!39

Geez, lose a few pounds and it gets all sexualized. Ick. This doesn't happen in the same way to men.

i went in a rollercoaster and it was so uncomfortable that every time the rollercoaster went over the hill my butt would move up from the seat. I used to completely fill out the seat so that was never a worry. A whole new scary dimension to rides in a theme park.23

I just went to Disneyland last Friday, and I had a similar experience. Granted, I don't get on the really scary rides, but the rides I rode were so much more jarring than I remember! I did not fill out the seat and did a lot of seat-sliding! It was crazy, and I was surprised by how much room I actually had. I can't even imagine getting on the really scary rides, but I nope right out of anything with a huge drop. XD14 -

I completely agree with you,I am extremely overweight but honestly my motivation for losing weight is strictly health related. My weight has never stopped me from doing anything I want to do. I grew up with four brothers and as the only girl my dad never excluded me from whatever the boys were doing so eventhough I was always a overweight I was very active. I am grown now but my brothers and I are still close and I live like 20 mins or so away from 2 of them,so they still invite me to sporting activities. I will seriously try just about anything even at 300 lbs,( I got to that weight cause I am a great cook and I love food ). I dont think anyone should wait until they get to a goal weight to live,do it now,its all about loving yourself as you work to improve your health.22 -
I have noticed that since I’ve lost weight (sw 185, cw 130, 5’1”) I don’t get as many sinus infections, colds, or seasonal allergies. Maybe it’s a fluke, but I think my healthier diet (more fruits, vegetables, water, and less “junk” food) and regular exercise has pumped up my immune system. And I know it’s been said already, but my confidence has greatly improved. Not because I’m a certain weight or size but because I’ve set a big goal and reached it. PS: I’ve enjoyed checking in and reading everyone’s comments, it’s been super inspiring/motivating!37
-
@ahunter1283 I am not sure it is a fluke. In general people can breath better, walk, no longer have some health issues or health issues are not as complicated after losing weight. I know for me personally, my blood pressure is down and I don't suffer from activity induced asthma.16
