@rheddmobile I must confess, though I'm a trail running fanboy, I absolutely hate running on grass. I think I'd rather run on pavement. Really short grass is tolerable but when it gets to ankle high, I avoid it. The worst is in the morning when it still has dew on it. Your feet get wet but without the fun of running through water. That's just BS. There are some trail races around here which run on turf trails and I avoid them for that reason. I'll take roots and rocks over grass.
Come to Phoenix. None of our trails have grass 😂7 -

I think I've found my next destination race. 10K, 21K or 42K, running through some great Scotch distilleries in Scotland. I wonder if I could talk DW into going to this one. It's just gorgeous!! And whisky!

It is a really pretty day, and it was about 50 degrees when I started to run. The flooding in the park had fortunately receded, so all of the paths were open.7 -

We have been really sucking at running on grass when testing out the courses for our upcoming trail races and wanted some practice, since the last race in the series has about three miles out of 10k on uneven grass. For me in particular I tend to tighten up when I can't trust my footing, and it's really exhausting. Our local park is where the last race in the series is held, so we jogged up to the start line of the 10k race and ran the grassy parts as one fast mile and then fartleking, skipped the part through the woods and ran back. Our fast mile was about 9:05 which is better than the 9:46 which was our race pace on grass last outing. Then coming back, our last 400m interval was at about 8:15 - and it's uphill - so it looks like the practice helped me loosen up and run faster, even in this single session.
My legs feel shot, though, so tired! I did lift heavy yesterday so that's part of it, but most is the effort of using so many different muscles compared to road running.
The weather got cold again. Two days ago when we ran it was in the 70s and today it was just about 40, 36 by the time we got home. I don't like running in cold weather and was just starting to get used to it last month, now I feel like I have to get adjusted all over again.

They don't usually hang around here, apparently there is an irruption, which is what they call it when there's a poor conifer seed crop in the mountains so these birds spread out to other areas. They are tiny, like to walk upside down, make noises like squeaky dog toys, and are so brave they will pluck seeds right out of your hand!
I think that grass is my slowest surface for running, except maybe sand. The uneveness is hard to detect, much more so than dirt. That is a fantastic pace on grass!
Yesterday I did a tempo-ish run. 7 miles with about 3 at tempo pace. Pace was slightly faster than last week, but still way slower than I want to be. My tempo miles were coming in right around my marathon pace. Of course, it was dark and I was on sidewalks and uneven streets for much of the run, so I have to consider that. Even still, I feel like I am climbing out of a really big hole.

I thought it was a typo at first, but it repeated in many reviews over many years of review. 10mph is a six minute mile! I mean even @MobyCarp could work with that limit. heh.11 -

It's been a long time since I've posted. Virtually no running during the holidays. I have enrolled in a half marathon scheduled for the end of March. So starting back slowly. 35 miles for the month of January.
Started out the month of January with vomiting (not after New Years partying, I can assure you.) So slow re-start.
1/7...3.17 miles.....outdoors....55 degree weather. I didn't want to overdo it and darkness was coming.
1/8...2.49 miles....treadmill....late start....gym was not that crowded. (surprise!)
1/10...2.56 miles....treadmill....Working on renovating our 2nd house to get it sold or rented. This workout was an add-on to otherwise busy day.
Total....8.22 miles.

No, I have problems working with a dreadmill regardless of the belt speed.9 -

No, I have problems working with a dreadmill regardless of the belt speed.

Ran a 22 mile long run this morning, with 2 miles of warm-up, 14 miles within 20% of MP, and the last 6 miles within 10% of MP. It was a nice run, save for the fact that I'm on call, so I couldn't stray too far from the office...that translated to 14 loops of the block near the office. You know those old cartoons where the background loops endlessly? Yeah, it sorta felt like that.

Also I love running in the PNW too! My daughter lives in Seattle and when I am there I plan for hill workouts (in the rain of course) 🤣
@7lenny7 - I am going to show that to my husband! That is a trip he would love to come along on. He has always talked about going there as well as the Bourbon trail in the US.
@ddmom0811 and @7lenny7 - Portland has been weird for a long time (at least since I was a kid), actually the entire state is well, different, but in a good way! I love it and would love to retire there - maybe in Eugene!
I went out early (for me) to get a couple of miles in before we headed off for a day of errands and a movie. It was overcast and around 50 but felt damp and really cold. I planned to try a run with my orthotics but they made my foot hurt so I went back to take them out and grabbed a vest (so much better). Then Hobbes had to do what pups have to do and another pass by home to throw it away. It seemed like we were never going to get going or run out of time before we left the neighborhood. I ended up making it a short out and back to the furthest trail entrance, a short bit on the trail and then home. Wrapped up nicely at just over 3 miles. As always when I have a deadline, real to imagined, I ran too fast with a few forced walking breaks to not overdo it with my foot.

Got out for 5.1 miles tonight. Great weather and a nice run.
I got new shoes!! Brooks Adrenaline 19's. I have used several versions of the Adrenaline and liked them all. Recently I had some knee pain once I got up to the 5 mile range and I have also upped my running days to 4 a week. Felt like it couldn't hurt to have a second pair of shoes to rotate in. No knee pain tonight! Hopefully this was all I needed.
Also, I think I need to eat more. I have lost 45lbs this past year and am getting to my maintenance weight. Not sure exactly what I should weigh, but I'm happy at this weight, normal BMI, not a lot of extra fluff!
Anyway, I have been "munchy" the last couple of weeks. Someone else mentioned that they felt fatigued during their runs when they cut back to try to lose a few pounds, and that clicked with me. I am also worried that I will start losing muscle mass if I keep up a deficit much longer. With all the rock climbing, I have actually put on quite a bit of muscle over the past 6 months. So, I ate an extra snack before heading out tonight and felt a lot more energetic during my run.
I'm going to add 100 cals a day to my meal plan next week and see how that goes. May need to add a bit more, but I'm nervous about doing too much too fast. I've worked so hard to lose this weight!

Another 5km park run today and it sucked. Hot windy and dusty and I reminded myself to just do the distance. So I did a run/walk/run and felt better for it. Still beaten by older runners but at least I passed the guy with a walking stick 👍

My first race I was really slow and said, "I may be slow but at least I can pass that lady with the stroller!" Uh, nope, nowhere close, she beat me and never looked back. Later I found out she was a pro running coach who taught a class in how to run with strollers, I wasn't even slightly in her league. Still later, I beat her and her stroller! Yay! And then at my most recent race, she had... a double stroller. And she whipped my rear AGAIN. with a double stroller. Turns out the time I beat her, she must have been about five months pregnant PLUS with a toddler in her stroller. Oh, well.
I think my point was supposed to be, sometimes the people you think you should be able to beat are just at a different stage of running than you are. So you have to run every race to beat yourself. And today you did that, by just getting out in the heat!8 -

I needed to do my long run today, and so did a friend, so we did an afternoon run ending just at sunset. We started on a path along the canal but the snow was really uneven from foot and bike and even snowmobile tracks (I think?) so we bailed off onto some back roads. They were clear with a pretty good shoulder and low traffic so it was decent to run there. I was impressed looking back at Garmin data that we sped up when we hit the road but then held a really constant pace for the 4 miles of that, then back to slower when we had to go back along the canal path again. Probably couldn't have done better keeping an even pace if I'd been monitoring it the whole time. It was about 10 degrees F (-12 C) but wasn't horrible once we got going, except for a few places where the wind was hitting us in the face. Glad to have the long run done!
Oh, and got new shoes today - Brooks Glycerin 16s. My podiatrist sent me to see a shoe/orthotics specialist and this was one of the models she recommended. I returned my previous pair of Saucony Omni ISOs that i bought after Thanksgiving, which she said were absolutely the wrong thing for me (I don't need a stability shoe and it was probably irritating my tendonitis). I wore the new shoes on the long run, which was probably not smart but seemed to work out ok. It was either that or crappy old shoes so I took my chances.
Tomorrow morning I'm doing a "Spartan workout tour", so that should be interesting/challenging/horrible. Then the 5k on Sunday. So, I'm headed to bed!7 -
Was feeling pretty good after work, so thought about kicking up the speed on the treadmill. Legs felt a bit heavy for after warming up, so just focused on getting through it. Rewarded with a quick soak in the whirlpool. It’s a swim meet weekend, so not sure if I’ll make it to the gym. Probably a walk or two with the dog when we get home as temperatures look decent.

Long Run Friday!! I have a friend coming into town this weekend, so I did my long run before I went to work at 2:00 today instead of on Sunday like normal. It was pretty chilly and fairly windy in places, but I managed to pick the perfect layers for the weather. I listened to some podcast episodes, jammed to some tunes, and the miles just flew right by.
And! The interview went really well. Hoping to hear some good news about contract placement opportunities next week. So overall my day went pretty darn well!

Today's run started off awful. I couldn't get my legs to work right, or at least it felt that way! Ever watch a baby giraffe walk for the first time? Yah, that's what I felt like. Ended up being a decent run for the last 2 miles.8 -

Evening. Day off for me today. I attempted to start my strength training plan today (Saturday here) but I managed 2 sets of exercises and just kept getting interrupted (kids, husband, phone etc) so I am leaving it till Monday. I had hoped that I could do 2 workouts over the weekend but nope.
Tomorrow I am going to be doing a 3k run - on the beach! It's the "hurdles" challenge for the running decathlon so have to do at least 3k off road. I don't have 3k of trails nearby (that I'm up to attacking) but there is an option to run on the beach. I'm both looking forward to it and somewhat anxious. Fortunately low tide is around 8am ish, so going out at around 730 will mean lots of hard wet stuff to run on. Anyone run on wet sand? Do I wear shoes? I think I should because of my over pronation, but HATE getting sand in my shoes.
ETA I googled lol. I'll use a lot of vaseline and will probably use my UA phantom hovr shoes cause they are kinda like an extra barrier the way they are sock-like2
