Today also called for 2-4km easy. I had planned on 3 km but my ankle has been feeling tender for a couple of days now so I went with 2km. It was a balmy -12C outside but I didn't feel much wind. Felt underdressed when I started and was just starting to feel too warm when I stopped. Which suggests that I was in fact overdressed for a longer run, which I will keep in mind for next time.
Ankle felt fine during the run AND I ran for 1km without stopping and only dropped to a walk for the turnaround and to cross a road on the way back. So I'm pleased about that part. My ankle is cranky now, but not more than it was earlier today.
I feel like I've got most of my base cardio back. Just need my legs (and ankle) to catch up now. Slow and steady, and I need to not push.
2019 Races:
1/1/19 Resolution Run (51:54)
5/5/19 BMO Vancouver Marathon (Half)

Today was a planned speedwork day, so we switched things up a bit and ran our speedwork on grass. 4 miles total.
We have been really sucking at running on grass when testing out the courses for our upcoming trail races and wanted some practice, since the last race in the series has about three miles out of 10k on uneven grass. For me in particular I tend to tighten up when I can't trust my footing, and it's really exhausting. Our local park is where the last race in the series is held, so we jogged up to the start line of the 10k race and ran the grassy parts as one fast mile and then fartleking, skipped the part through the woods and ran back. Our fast mile was about 9:05 which is better than the 9:46 which was our race pace on grass last outing. Then coming back, our last 400m interval was at about 8:15 - and it's uphill - so it looks like the practice helped me loosen up and run faster, even in this single session.
My legs feel shot, though, so tired! I did lift heavy yesterday so that's part of it, but most is the effort of using so many different muscles compared to road running.
The weather got cold again. Two days ago when we ran it was in the 70s and today it was just about 40, 36 by the time we got home. I don't like running in cold weather and was just starting to get used to it last month, now I feel like I have to get adjusted all over again.
Speaking of cold, we have started putting out bird feeders, and we have red breasted nuthatches! They don't usually hang around here, apparently there is an irruption, which is what they call it when there's a poor conifer seed crop in the mountains so these birds spread out to other areas. They are tiny, like to walk upside down, make noises like squeaky dog toys, and are so brave they will pluck seeds right out of your hand!18 -

1/08/2019 - 8 miles
1/09/2019 - 9.4 miles
1/10/2019 - 6.5mph for 1 hour @ 5% grade
By the time I was ready to start my run, the Sun had been gone for several hours, so I figured I do a pace run on dreadmill. [PACE RUN = That is when you run a workout at your race pace]
Well, got on the treadmill and planned to walk for like 5 mins to loosen up, but turned out the dreadmill was already loose. VERY loose. The belt was slipping and sliding everywhere. Took an hour to disassemble, find the problem (cheap plastic part broke), redneck a fix, and put back together. Probably have to hit Craig's List and start looking for a replacement soon. Ah well.
Then I got on the dreadmill, and decided an easier run for an hour was called for. So 6.5 mph (roughly 9 min mile), uphill the whole time of course, cause that is how I roll.
Pretty low mileage week for me so far, but eh, let's just call it a cut back week and pretend it was planned.
Upcoming Races
Steel Challange 5k - May 2019
Pittsburgh Marathon - May 2019
Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Race - May 2019
2021 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
2019 GOAL: Knock a full hour off my 50k time at Glacier Ridge.10 -

45 minutes of elliptical, 30 minutes of LateralX. Normally I'd call that 7.5 miles but I was dogging it that last half hour so I'll call it 6.5 miles. I was just too tired from lack of sleep.
I followed that up with a good workout on the hip abductor /adductor machine.

@ddmom0811 To add to the Canadians plugging in our cars.
Most vehicles in Canada will have a block heater which is a heating element inside the Engine to warm up the Anti-freeze (Engine Coolant). Since the coolant does not circulate if the engine does not run this heat warms the Steel/Aluminum Block of the engine and the oil, which allows them to start easier in the cold weather. I have lived in the Arctic where we would have 2 block heaters, an Oil Heater and a battery heater. So depending on what the temperature was you might have all 4 plugged in. It's also why 90% of the homes have a Garage that you can actually get the vehicles in. Even if it's not heated the vehicle will be out of the wind and will maintain some of it's heat from running. My garage sits at about -10C right now and it's -26C outside so I don't plug in at home - just at work. I could plug in or turn a heater on in the garage but I don't need it unless I am going to be working.
Also in Northern Canada during winter it's a good idea to keep your gas tank above 1/2. If you have ever had condensation / frost form on the windows of your car the same thing can happen to the inside of your gas tank. As soon as you start to drive the fuel sloshing in the tank pulls the moisture down into the fuel and can cause major problems when it freeze's. This is also why Canadian fuel is legally required to contain 5% ethanol which helps prevent freeze ups.
Many years ago we had a company from Georgia salvage some surplus industrial equipment and none of their vehicles had block heaters, no antifreeze and Georgia summer tires. So when they came out to their vehicles at the hotel in the morning they had big patch's of ice around the vehicle's from the water freezing and pushing the Frost plugs out of the Engine, cracked radiators, windshield washer reservoir etc. They spent ~$2500.00 per vehicle on repairs, winter/snow tires, block heaters, antifreeze, new frost plugs, new radiators - plus towing.
Then we had to give them some winter driving lessons.
#1 Lesson; Less is More - don't stomp on the gas pedal and don't stomp on the brake. Gentle acceleration and decelerate.
@kristinegift Glad to hear of some good news on the job hunt.
@abowersgirl I agree with the previous comments that the shoe might be too tight causing the issue. If I over tighten my shoe I get pain across the Middle - top of my foot and on the inside of my arch. You could try a differant lacing pattern - can't find my link will keep hunting for it unless someone else can post a link to the differant lacing patterns.6 -
I woke up this morning aching from the gym the day before and said to myself I'd still go to the gym this morning, but only run about a mile.
I started running however and felt GOOD so carried on past the 1 mile I had promised myself. Didn't feel like stopping at my usual 1.5 miles so carried on till I got to 2 (probably could have carried on but I had to stop and head to work)! No, not a massive distance but double what I felt like I could do when I woke up. Also noticed I hit 1.5 miles and 13 mins and 42 seconds which I am very happy about.
Now I just need to figure out how to fit in a run this weekend...
06Jan - 2.8 miles (outdoor)
07Jan - 1.4 miles (treadmill)
10Jan - 1.5 miles (treadmill)
11Jan - 2 miles (treadmill)
Total so far: 7.7 miles of 2014 -

I missed the conversation on this, but wanted to add in addition to @juliet3455 's advice, also keep in mind your foot swells while you run. Running shoes are often 1/2 size bigger than your normal daily wear to compensate for this.

Frosty 3 miler this morning, not the usual 5. Starting temp was 25F/-3C and dropped from there. Picked up a light wind about midway through the run and had some issues breathing through the mask this morning. Overall was glad I got out and did at least that because my body just wanted to stay in bed this morning, was so toasty under the covers. 😊🏃♂️💪
ETA:mileage for the month so far is 57.5.7 -

WOW! I had no idea. I thought antifreeze just did it's job. All I have to do in Florida is try to park in shade in the summer so I don't burn my hands on the steering wheel. I remember when my first baby was born my pediatrician said "whenever you put him in the car make sure the buckles do not touch him!"
@kristinegift - Good luck!
My daughter (age 25) got a job as a software engineer with Nike and is moving from NYC to Portland, OR next week! They have some very cool running trails right on the Nike campus. She is so excited - she's been in NYC for 7.5 years (college for 4 and working for 3.5). Loves it, but just tired of the commute and ready for a new adventure. My sister lives in the Portland area also. I see some Lewis & Clark trail runs with lots of Nike gear in my future!

I came off call yesterday and finally was able to get in an uninterrupted run. It was about 40 degrees, and the sun had set, but it was nice to be out and moving. I have today off work as compensation for all of the extra hours I worked, so I am going to my favorite park for a run. It was flooded in areas last weekend, but we haven’t had rain this week, so I’m hoping all of that has receded by now.
I also saw this morning that there is going to be a 5K (and half) trail race on my birthday (Feb. 2), and I am considering doing it. I have leisurely run some on that trail system, but I have never raced on a trail. I figure I will just go out without any sort of time goal (since I have zero clue what it would be), and just enjoy myself.14 -

newbie here
Jan 1 : 1.5 =1.5/30 miles, walking 5.6 miles (after run) note: run took 19.13 min
Jan 2: 3.02= 4.52/30 miles, walking 11.13 miles (after run): run took 37.02 min 👍improvment
Jan 3: rest day= 4.52/30 miles, walking 4.11 (after run) I think I pushed myself too hard too fast for a non seasoned new runner the day before. My legs were sore up until last night.
Jan 4: 1.91= 6.43/30 miles, walking 4.22 (after run): no time improvement
Jan 5: 1.5= 7.93 miles, walking 7.47 (after run)
Jan 6: 1.5= 9.43/30, walking 4.5 (after run)
Jan 7: 2.90= 12.33/30, walking 11.19(after run) run took 20.17 👎 today I was lethargic and not feeling it, i consider it a win that I did it at all.

Jan 9 1.5= 15.33, walking 8.19 (after run)
Jan 10 1.5= 16.83/30, walking 3.97 (after run)

@juliet3455 Your weather is definitely worse than mine.
@ddmom0811 Our car has a block heater. Basically a battery warmer, because batteries don't work very well when it's colder than about -21C or so. If you were to be driving a vehicle up here without one the alternative would be to go out and idle your car for a few minutes every 2-3 hours or so. They're standard in new vehicles sold here though and each parking stall at work has a plug for them. Sometimes when running in my neighbourhood in winter I have to watch for extension cords lying across the sidewalks...
Wow, learn something new every day!
@MegaMooseEsq & @7lenny7 - thanks for the info! I'm going up Feb 26-Mar 1. It's a conv for Comp Sci professors/instructors. Last year it was in Baltimore and weather wasn't too bad. We all sat in shock when they said MN in Feb for 2019! Maybe by then it will be nice! I'll contact you the week prior!
Fingers crossed for nicer weather in Feb but who knows. Usually it doesn’t go above freezing from mid-December through mid-March, but this has been a weird year so far.1 -

I'm doing my first trail race (a 5K) on the second, too! Thought it would be fun to mix it up. I'd love to hear how yours goes. No time goal here either, just finish without seriously injuring myself!5 -
@juliet3455 - posted this for her a couple of days ago. May not be what you were looking for (I couldn't find my go to article either) but I liked the visuals they provided for each pattern/issue.@abowersgirl - sometimes discomfort (not pain or sharp pain) on the top of your foot can also be a result of lacing your shoe too tight. I have high arches and often have issues with it depending on the shoe. There are a number of articles and videos online and this is a good one with visuals of the different lacing patterns for different issues.

@mbaker566 - I always love seeing your pictures! They never fail to make me smile!
@ddmom0811 - so exciting for your daughter and your getting to visit her and run there too!1 -
@marisap2010 definitely try out the trail race!!
@Squish815 that sounds like a fantastic way to start the day, congrats!
@ddmom0811 I'm flying to Portland for my big race in April. I've been there twice before visiting my sister, but not since I've started running. They aren't kidding when they say, "Keep Portland Weird".
@rheddmobile I must confess, though I'm a trail running fanboy, I absolutely hate running on grass. I think I'd rather run on pavement. Really short grass is tolerable but when it gets to ankle high, I avoid it. The worst is in the morning when it still has dew on it. Your feet get wet but without the fun of running through water. That's just BS. There are some trail races around here which run on turf trails and I avoid them for that reason. I'll take roots and rocks over grass.

I really hope one day to race out in portland and seattle-but mostly portland area
in the meantime, i'll be jealous of @7lenny7 and of @ddmom0811 and her family. i've always had a pull to the PNW0 -

I think I've found my next destination race. 10K, 21K or 42K, running through some great Scotch distilleries in Scotland. I wonder if I could talk DW into going to this one. It's just gorgeous!! And whisky!
