I'm on day 6 of my keto diet and loving it!! I joined after my friend starting and she lost 15lbs in 5 weeks. Im not sure if I've lost anything yet as I dont own scales but I feel like I have either way i feel fantastic! The first few days were hard i felt really tired but thats began to pass now. My partner is doing it with me even tho he doesnt have weight to lose and he is also really enjoying the food and his shorts are telling me hes lost some belly fat. I'm finding it works really well on keeping my calories under control I dont feel like I'm missing out on anything at all whereas a 1200cal low fat diet i did.

What was the reason behind restricting both calories and fat?

In the end, how you lose your weight is how you'd have to maintain it. I understand the temptation just get some weight off no matter what. But the truth is..you have to find an eating plan that works with your life, personality ..and you can sustain during loss..and beyond.3

I think she was comparing keto with restricted calories to a low fat diet with restricted calories (on which she felt hungrier).0 -

You lose the inflammation due to the processed foods. You gain a clear cognitive mind, more energy, overall improvement in the way you feel. I'm strict keto meaning ingredients are the most important thing. I have not missed out or felt deprived of any food.
Also the way of eating is not hard or complicated. I thought that at first too, but quickly learned it's is pretty simple. Bottom line for me I will never go back to a western diet. I will stay keto going forward.
for you it may have done that, for me it caused me inflammation(I have RA), I was lethargic and my mind was awful .my short term memory went to hell and I never had an issue before and dont now. I was on it 2 months and it wasnt keto flu because I did research and made sure to prevent the keto flu before I started. my health was literally going down the drain and I was very close to having hubby take me to the ER because I felt like my body was shutting down. he told me I needed to stop keto and see what happens, I did and things improved again and went back to normal(well what is normal for me) I lost no more weight on keto than any other way of eating.
weight loss in and of itself can cause an improvement in health issues as well. I also eat processed foods and they do not cause me any inflammation at all ,not even my RA
That's so interesting! I have RA and have had significant improvement with my RA. It's amazing how different bodies are.
yep mine is at a minimum right now and I dont need meds yet(its been more than 10 years since diagnosed). but when I was doing keto I was in a LOT of pain. not so now as I no longer do keto
Sorry, I wrote that poorly! I am doing keto and have been miraculously pain free since the second week I began. I am, however, on two different RA meds (plaquenil and sulfasalazine). I'm glad you're doing well without the keto diet!
thanks and without meds for now. for me what helps is weight training.

I am one of those people that didn't lose anything on keto. On top of it, it gave me dry eyes. It can not be coincidence - I tried keto/Atkins about 3 times and got dry eyes every time several weeks into, which went away shortly after adding carbs back.1

I know... I was trying to figure out why she felt that restricting calories and fat was necessary and she couldn’t just focus on calories. I’d feel pretty dang hungry too if I was eating the bare minimum and restricting fat on top of that.2 -

Counterpoint: Many of the people here critiquing the keto bandwagon (defined as the fervent belief that keto is the "solution" to everyone's weight and health issues) have taken the time to research and understand human nutrition and have drawn the conclusion that keto may be a great fit for some people, but that many claims for it are not based in evidence and are overblown.
YES. And, reality check here - the dude who posted about people being ill-informed previously stated he started keto on Sunday...so...less than a week ago. I'm sure he's a total expert on all things keto, as well as all other diets so that he can make a scientific comparison. Right? I mean...just sayin'. Can say with almost 100% certainty I've read more about nutrition/fitness/training/health than homeboy has but I'm not going around telling people they are ignorant and "don't listen to these people" who are "ranting about issues."
I have some friends who are into keto. A couple of them compete in bodybuilding and classic physique. They both cut AND bulk on keto (meaning keto doesn't automatically equate to weight LOSS - you have to be in a caloric deficit for that. If you're in a surplus - even if it's a keto surplus - you're still going to gain). Me personally, I like my carbs and am not a big fan of almost entirely eliminating a particular macro. I don't think anyone is going to reasonably claim that my physique, health, or fitness level has been adversely impacted by my consumption of carbohydrates.10 -

News out of the UK today pushing the importance of fibre, which may be lacking in a keto diet.
Not really. I am 3 months into keto (cheated during the holidays) but have lost about 10 pounds a month. I eat a lot of green vegetables make bread from almond flour and don't feel like I am on a diet at all. Cutting sugar and carbs was the best choice for me.3 -

Ahh,
If she was anything like me, she was following the old food guidelines laid out by the government and followed by various health organizations.5 -

I'm glad keto is working for you, but your response to the point about fiber didn't really address fiber. How many grams are you getting a day?
(It's not a default option in your food diary but you can swap something for it here https://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings )4 -

This doesn't actually answer the question about fiber though. There's a thread going on in the debate section about the news of the WHO commissioned recommendations that came out yesterday, and it discusses how much fiber is in veggies/fruit and how difficult it is to actually hit fiber guidelines without also including whole grains, beans, potatoes etc. The recommendations will be for increased fiber guidelines, higher than previously recommended, with 30+ grams a day for better health markers/decrease in diseases.
I eat a LOT of veg/fruit but there's no way I'd be able to hit 30+ grams of fiber just by eating leafy greens/low carb vegetables and fruit. I'm genuinely curious to see how someone on keto could hit 30+ grams a day of fiber, on a daily basis, while still eating very low carb.

eta: for some reason I can't get the link to the Lancet to load correctly-there's a link in the guardian article that will take you to it though. You can also do a search on the home page of the Lancet for 'fiber' and it's the first link that comes up.
eta#2 if you copy the whole Lancet link and past it in a new browser it should work!5 -

For what it's worth, I gained weight on it. You have already received answers and probably have an idea about what the general consensus is - any diet works if it helps you eat less.
What I'm going to repeat is something else that bears repeating. It looks like you are half dreading it and would rather not do it, but are willing to clinch your teeth and soldier through to achieve results. The diet may be the cup of tea of many people, some of which have shared their experience in this thread, but if it's not what you would sustain then it doesn't matter how awesome it is in other people's opinions because it won't give you the results you want.
Any diet that you can't do consistently enough to lose weight is a bad diet for you. I had every reason to go keto. I was super morbidly obese and had high blood sugar. Tried it for 3 weeks, then quit because I was extremely hungry on it and it affected my physical and mental health negatively. I didn't enjoy it at all, so I decided it wasn't for me. I thought about the amount of weight I had to lose and couldn't imagine myself doing this for another week, let alone until I lose all the weight I needed to lose. I haven't changed the way I eat much, but now it's more controlled and deliberate with better strategies to handle life and food. Pick a diet (or make up your own) that you can see yourself doing for the long haul. This will make maintaining the lost weight much easier. If you like having clearer guidelines, I strongly recommend the one @GottaBurnEmAll linked to. Here it is again:

I'm not sure what you mean. Keto is just a subset of low carb that has carbs at a low enough level so that you are consistently in ketosis.
You don't have to eat specific recipes, just eat fewer carbs. I don't see how it allows more creativity than any other way of eating (I ate basically the same, even when trying keto, except I'd sub something higher fat for the starchy carb or fruit portion of my meal). I didn't like it, since my mental list of higher fat, lower carb things to sub is a bit limited when I try to stick to what I consider a healthier way of eating, and I ended up eating more meat than I like (I like meat, but I prefer to build many meals around beans and lentils and pulses rather than getting so much protein from meat. I ate somewhat more eggs than normal, and less dairy.). That said, I can see how others might enjoy keto as a way of eating, depending on taste preferences. But how much creativity you have with your meals is going to depend on you, not diet.6
