Run the Year team A 400+ miles
Ya know.... I was thinkin’ on this run.... if we @shanaber, maybe @ddmom0811, @RunsOnEspresso and others that are or might be interested in running Hawai’i, the Kona marathon is in June. It’ll be hot enough swim with @HonuNui. A full, half, 10k and 5k are offered. Say 2020?
As DH would say, you never have to twist my arm to go to Hawaii. He does think I'm weird for wanting to go places and run though so that is the harder part.
Eh go to swim then 😜3 -

3 miles hardly seems worth the trouble. Just started feeling relaxed when I had to stop. But taper I must.
A semi-related running question: back in November I reserved a hotel room through the Houston marathon site, and requested late check-out, as I know I will getting back after normal checkout time (usually like 10am). Got a confirmation, but didn't see anything about late check-out. Kept trying to contact them to verify, but never got a response. Finally got through today and they said it had to be requested at check-in, and depends on availability. Uh, Ok.
What am I supposed to do with all my luggage and crap if I have to check out at 5:30am on my way to the marathon? I won't have a car (specifically got the hotel because it is less than a mile from the start line). Anyone had to deal with that before?5 -
Today I got to run 1.96 miles. I took a slightly longer route home from the gym trying to avoid some sidewalk, but I think I mostly just added a half mile to the run. Not a big deal, although it was pretty damp and chilly. We’re supposed to get some sun tomorrow and temps above freezing before dropping again, so I’m hoping to get a lake run in.
Gym was a bit of a struggle today. I did my first barbell lift, which I’d been looking forward to for a while but was kind of anti-climactic. I think I was getting too caught up in what the other people in the class were doing instead of focusing on what I was doing. I need to work on that. Comparison is the thief of joy, and so on and so forth.

3.5 miles on the treadmill this afternoon. Started off pretty stiff and uncomfortable, so I kept the pace slow, but I did loosen up a bit by the end.

I've not had to deal with this for a run, but I have when at conferences. Most hotels will have a luggage storage room and will hold your stuff for the day. The only thing you won't have is access to a shower!

Yeah, she is right. We have had to do this while traveling. Just explain the situation and they will usually be helpful. After all, they want you to come back and bring friends.0 -
Gym workout + easier run on the agenda today.
Today's gym session was my stability circuit. A lot of glute bridges, clamshells and one-legged exercises that I loathe. But if I hate them that means they are hard, and that means I need to do them until I like them (because if I like them then I perceive them to be easy)... right? Followed up half an hour of gym work with 5 easy/boring miles on the treadmill, as one does

@Scott6255 I’ve had hotels hold my luggage as well. The sucky part about no late check-out is no post-race shower before traveling. I had a friend once bribe a maid to let her use the hotel gym shower.4 -

Applications for the NYC Marathon start tomorrow!
I am trying my luck at the lottery. The likelihood of me running a qualifying time in Miami is less than a snowballs chance in the 7th level of hell during a heat wave. LOL
https://www.tcsnycmarathon.org/plan-your-race/run-in-2019/2019-tcs-new-york-city-marathon-drawing
Actually, the time qualifying window for the 2019 NYC Marathon was calendar 2018. At this point, either you ran a qualifying time or you didn't. Either it was in one of the NYRR sanctioned races that have a guaranteed entry attached, or it was in a non-NYRR race and you're eligible for one of a "limited number" of slots for non-NYRR time qualifiers.
I know this off the top of my head because I time qualified for the 2019 NYC Marathon at the 2018 Boston Marathon, the 2018 Wineglass Marathon, and 3 of the 4 half marathons I ran in 2018. Plan A is to be on the site as soon as I can after it opens claiming qualification based on Wineglass. Then I see if I'm fast enough at the keyboard; if not, I get dumped into the lottery with everyone else.
Looks like 15% of the lottery entrants got lucky in 2018. I don't think I'm particularly lucky in games of pure chance; if anything, I'm less lucky than average.
@MobyCarp I did not come close to a qualified time in 2018 and I don’t anticipate coming close in 2019.
I am also not particularly lucky. Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)...
I grew up outside of NYC and would love to experience the city in that way. If it happens, wonderful. If it doesn’t, I will move onto the next bucket list race (without a qualifying time).
Good luck! I am sure you will kick major butt at the NYCM
A lady who works with my mum entered the lottery for Boston 2019 and got in! I'm unbelievably jealous. A kiwi running the BM on lottery!
No lottery for Boston is available to US citizens. OTOH, a Kiwi will have substantially larger travel costs to run Boston than I will.
You're going to hate this, but as a Kiwi, I can buy a marathon entry into Boston, NY, London, Paris, Berlin, any of them, no need for a qualifying time, just have to pay for the "tour" package - flights, 4 nights accommodation, and entry fee. Easy if you have the funds.
@avidkeo, go to http://www.marathontours.co.nz
Actually, the only one of those that I can't buy a guaranteed entry for (from the very same Boston-based Marathon Tours organization) is Boston. Boston only gives travel agencies guaranteed entries for non-US residents. And that's not a problem, because I can time qualify for Boston.
I was just looking at the Marathon Tours premium package for New York. I think I want it, if only for the private bus transportation to start; and it would be insurance of getting in. If I'm in by time qualification or lottery, I pay $295 entry fee (as non-NYRR member US resident); guaranteed entry from Marathon Tours costs $550, but is only available if I buy the premium package that I think I want anyway. So what, an extra $255 if I was too slow to register and also don't get in via lottery? Hmm. May go for that, and just eliminate the uncertainty. Probably won't have to shell out the extra $255.5 -
@7lenny7 That race sounds so neat!0

I'm sore. My quads are so so sore after yesterdays weight training session. and its getting worse. Day 2 is usually the worst, whats the best i wont be able to run tomorrow morning? Why do I do this to myself (leave a long gap between training sessions, I love lifting weights!)
And I did upper body today. This is going to be a sore week...5 -
Pity party for one, please!
Every time I look at the forecast for my upcoming trail race on Sunday the 20th, it's another degree colder. It started out with a race time (2 pm) forecast of 51 F, now it's down to 25 with a feels like of 13! With warm temperatures on either side! It's like the universe is picking on me personally! Cue the tiny violins!
Seriously I don't know if it was ever this cold here last year, it may be the coldest weather I've ever run in.
13 -
I ran 2.3 miles today. I probably overdressed a little, but it was freezing in my office all day and I just wanted to be warm for a while! Luckily it was a short run so I couldn’t totally overheat. While I have really enjoyed running in the cooler weather, I’m ready for a little warmth. Like maybe highs about 70F. That sounds nice.
I am feeling the glute workout today! Guess that’s good. Means I did some work on them yesterday. I’m making my way through the FB glute workouts to see which ones I really like. I need to find some yoga/stretching short ones too. Between the climbing and the running, there doesn’t seem to be a part of me that has any flexibility anymore.

Well, I was not in the mood to do another cold, hilly run after yesterday's 5k (thanks for the kudos, by the way!) so of course tonight's group speedwork was...HILLS. And it was super cold. How perfect. I sucked it up and did the 15 minutes of hill repeats - half way up, easy down, all the way up, easy down and so on. This particular hill is harder than where some of the other groups on different/nights meet and is on Elm Street, so we appropriately call it the Nightmare on Elm Street everytime hill week rolls around.
As always, I didn't like the doing of it, but I love having done it.

No! No pity. Running in 20 degrees just requires proper planning of your outfit. Dress in layers that you can remove. You will be freezing in the starting corral, but warm fairly quickly once you get going. Extremities get cold first. Get merino wool socks. I recommend Darn Tough or Smart Wool. Get mittens or convertible gloves. You will not need your fingers to run, and mittens work much better. You might want a buff or face mask.
When you are running and warmed up, it will feel about 10-15 degrees warmer than it is, so that is what you target your runtime dress for. Many runners buy inexpensive sweats that are large enough to go over everything from Goodwill and just take them off minutes before the race starts. Some races even collect the clothes to give to shelters, other races you just toss them by the starting line and pick them up later.
I use Hot Hands in my gloves and my shoes, but you probably will not need them. I am just lucky enough to have issues like that.
Seriously, dress right and you will be fine and might even nail a PR.8 -

Tonight's run was blah. I think my right shoe was tied too tight. Around mile 2.75 I loosened it but I think the damage was already done. It stayed on the verge of falling asleep tingly. I even took it off and put it back on (also did this to adjust KT tape, apparently that was bunching up under the same foot). So first 3 miles were crap and 4th was good. LOL6 -
Ugh, I am just going to miss the 80km mark in the Lululemon challenge on Strava. Unless I do 7km tomorrow but I'm only scheduled for 2-4 miles, maybe I stretch it a bit.3

This is my placeholder for this month. My goal is to get back into running. What usually happens is that I train for a race, run the race, stop running, and then after an extended period of time of not running, when I do start running again, I have to start all over again from the beginning. So, right now I am back at the beginning.
I am going to start C25K again this month and then run a 5k in March. I don't know exactly when I will start C25K, my local running store is supposed to start a 5k running program in January, but I haven't seen anything posted yet, so I will give them 2 weeks to post something before I just start training myself. I have other races planned to run this year with my sister-in-law, who is also getting back into running, and our goal is to eventually do a 1/2 the last weekend of 2019.
Ok, so I gave my local running store 2 weeks to start up the 5k running program, but it didn't happen, so I started the C25K today myself with my dog. It was a rare sunny January day in the PNW, so I had to take advantage of it with a run. W1D1 done. Weightlifting tomorrow.
Mercer Island 5k--March 24
Fall City Day 10K--June 8
Chuckanut Foot Race (7 miles)--July 6

@avidkeo, go to http://www.marathontours.co.nz
Awww man thats so cool!! though there's a part of me that would rather qualify - a bit more prestigious I guess? when did I turn into a snob. Plus with jetlag, who wants just 4 days in the states, pass!!
Have you seen the qualifying times for Boston?? It's like 3:35 (guessing your age here), which is pretty quick. Also, I'm sure you can add extra days onto your trip (and throw in a few more races!!)
Oh never thought I'd actually be able to qualify lol. Definitely have to add more days, and more races!2 -
