Bwahaha! Thanks man! I should know better than to use the J word in this group.6 -
I feel you @rheddmobile! Forcast all week in Houston is 60's and 70's, until Saturday night, and it drops to 28 for Sunday morning, with 18mph wind
I live in Houston, but will not be out doing the race that day. I have another friend doing the HM. I will think of you both from the warmth of my house. Good luck on the race!!6 -
Still on track to hit my stretch goal by the end of the month. I should have a bit over 65 miles by the end of the day.8

@Kimtrooper 41°C? I'd be dead! We had a couple (too many) 35°C days last summer, I'm already not sure how I survived that. I think for a month the temperature in my apartment never dropped below 28°C *shudder* I'm glad winter is here
@taxgirl1 Well done for starting C25K again! If the local running store didn't start a new-years-resolutions program by now, they might not do it at all - I think middle of January the first people already start second-guessing their good intentions.
--
My run on Saturday was short and miserable, my run on Sunday was longer and better. 19.3km, maybe 60% of that in sticky mud and rain
Unfortunately, I might have hurt my knee a bit at the very end, back on pavement on the way home. I was jumping up to slap a street sign (please tell me I'm not the only one here who does that kind of thing? ^^), and I must have landed a bit funny, because there was a sharp pain in my left knee the moment I touched down. I could still finish the run though. Yesterday morning it hurt a but to walk, but fortunately yesterday evening it was fine as long as I stayed away from stairs, so I don't think it's anything serious. I'm still thinking I might make today an extra rest day, just be to on the safe side.
Lol @nikkiwolf it sure sucks. The house is already warm in the morning and I already get super hot when I run so it’s just not happening this week I think. At least until the cool change of 35 arrives on Friday! 😜. Hope your knee improves 😀2 -
guys as I Canadian I have had to both look up what 26 F means in real, metric terms, and picked my jaw up off the floor that this is believed to be "cold"11
-
Yesterday’s run couldn’t have gone worse, but I now believe it was due to not eating enough, as I back-dated my food log on here and was nearly 2000 calories short over three days.
I have eaten SO much today and it’s been great!
My run tonight felt great, and I smashed Orangetheory this evening. Finally feel like I’m getting somewhere with this marathon cycle.
What a difference a day makes!

don't worry, as a wisconsinite i don't feel as if that' super cold either. however down south, that especially cold8 -
Hey all. No run for me today for 2 reasons,
1: I'm still wayyyy to sore after starting strength training again. my quads are still toast (day 2 so should be better tomorrow, when I torture them again!)
2: I was up until 2am taking my 4.5yr old into hospital. She was on and off wheezing all day yesterday and had a bit of an asthma attack at 1130pm. enough to take her to be checked out. After a bit more salbutamol and observation, she was better, enough we got to go home. home for 2am. but I didn't sleep till after 3. so no energy for running today.
Oh shes much better today. I on the other hand am a zombie

It all depends on what your used to. You and I don't think 26F is too cold because we're used to it. On the other hand 85F to me is nasty hot to run in but those in the south don't think twice about it. I can't blame anyone for not wanting to run in temps they've never experienced before hot or cold.11 -
almostsuperpowered wrote: »guys as I Canadian I have had to both look up what 26 F means in real, metric terms, and picked my jaw up off the floor that this is believed to be "cold"
🙄
It's all relative to what you're used to.
I'm originally from Wisconsin and 26 wouldnt be cold for there. I live in Phoenix now and 26 is cold (plus the dryness here adds such a different chill to the air that WI 26 doesn't have). We get maybe a week or so of cold fir us. When youre used to highs of 60/70 and its suddenly a high of 40 it's quite the swing.
And 110 seems a tad warm to me but most people think it's too hot (too hot is 115+).
And then there's all the other issues that cause people to feel hot/cold differently. My DH is rarely cold but I'm always cold. Unless I'm outside and its summer I will be cold no matter what I do. 🤷🏼♀️8 -
I agree @RunsOnEspresso and @7lenny7 - its all about what your body is acclimated to. I grew up not far from the Canadian border and I lived in Norway for over a year. IN THE PAST, 26F seemed like a mild day. However, my job has brought me very south Texas for many years now.
I went to visit my relatives in Rochester NY a few years ago over Christmas and thought I was dying of hypothermia each time I walked by the front door. 😂. My cousins were in shorts and I had three sweaters wrapped around me.
Just like running, your body becomes accustomed to what you habitually feed it.10 -

Yep, when I lived in Las Vegas, it would be over 100F (38C) at 1 am. During the day it could hit 120F (49C). So when you compare that to 20F (-6C) you are talking a swing of nearly a HUNDRED DEGREES. Makes all the difference in the world.
In warmer climates, as I understand it, your blood thins. This is why they tell heart patients to move to the SW USA. The thinner blood allows you to handle heat better but is not as good at dealing with the cold. With my heart condition, I am considering moving south after my son graduates HS in part for that very reason.
Now, living in Pittsburgh for a while, I regularly run in 10-20F (-12 to -6C). It is only my Raynaud's that is an issue at those temps. I have been skiing in -40C6 -
@7lenny7 Yes a run, although between speed reading and the way it showed on my PC it initially looked like you and Kody both had poop breaks, that's a bad visual.
@rheddmobile Can't add anything to Pastorvincent's comments about layers and throw away sweat shirt/hoody, except Don't Stay Home - Embrace The Suck and go after it.almostsuperpowered wrote: »guys as I Canadian I have had to both look up what 26 F means in real, metric terms, and picked my jaw up off the floor that this is believed to be "cold"
@almostsuperpowered I agree with @RunsOnEspresso, @amymoreorless and @7lenny7 especially the final words of wisdom fromamymoreorless wrote: »Just like running, your body becomes accustomed to what you habitually feed it.
@_nikkiwolf_ Hope the knee straightens out quickly, and yes slapping signs is a thing. On certain runs with our little club you slap the signs, garbage can or Traffic Barricade ( my favorite as it rings a deep bassy tone ) at the turn as an indication that you are being honest and not shorting the distance. We have 5 hills that we regularly run and there is a sign at the top of each of them which is the designated "minimum distance" turn point.
This work stuff is really getting in the way of running.10 -

January running total to date – 112.43
Nominal January mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the January races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – Speed work on the indoor track. 2 mile warmup, then the marathon plan assignment: 4 x 200 at R, 800 at T, 2 x 600 at R, 4 x 200 at R. I gave myself 200 recovery after the 200s and after the 800 at T; gave myself 400 recovery after the 600s at R.
I remembered why I'm not doing the indoor track racing season. 600s at R are tough, and you run a lot of them training for a mile on the track. Fortunately, I'm in marathon training. Next week I get 3 x 600 at R, then the plan shifts to slower but longer intervals.
Needed to walk a couple laps after the intervals before I could face a cool down run. Then I was pretty creaky at first; it took about a mile of the cool down for that to start feeling normal. I guess that's what it feels like when I'm working the excess lactic acid out of the muscles.
Before today's workout, I signed up for the premium travel package to the NYC marathon. This comes with a guaranteed entry for extra $$$ that will get me in if I wasn't fast enough registering to grab one of the time qualifier spots and then don't get in via lottery. I wanted the premium package mostly for the the private bus to the start line, but also to put certainty into my participation so my sisters could make travel plans to spectate. Just a little bit of family pressure here; I will have two sisters at the finish line in Central Park, and they have farther to travel to get there than I do.

It was misting/raining tonight. The run itself felt much easier than yesterday. Funny how one day it feels like you can never run again and the next it's perfect and you feel you could run forever. I was ok going a bit longer tonight because I decided I cannot handle a 4 am wake up tomorrow or Friday. I'd rather sleep. And now I can still hit my weekly goal and get two rest/not waking up at 4 am days LOL11 -

Yeah I had a race this summer in 108 degree heat - that's 42 C for you!
I remember visiting my cousin in Ontario during a "heat wave." He and his family were running around in shorts saying they wished their house had AC. It was 70 degrees.6 -
Working on getting caught up on posts from the weekend. It was an active weekend as lots of time in between swim events, so walked with my MIL doing laps in the gym. I didn’t turn on the walk setting, so I didn’t count the miles that displayed on my Garmin. Today after work was able to get a run in on the treadmill. Run felt pretty good, but couldn’t quite focus at the end so didn’t push it past the three I had planned.

1/15 - 3.10 miles

6.6 miles on trails - today was an easy run, we did the 10k race route at Shelby Farms again for practice. Today we sort of knew where we were supposed to go and only had to backtrack once, which gave us a better idea of what pace we are able to manage over these particular trails. It looks like our easy pace on grass here averages about 11 and about 12 on the dirt track through the woods. It also looks like this particular "10k" race is about 6.6 miles - a good thing to know going into it! Practicing here is definitely a good thing, the last time we did this course it kind of kicked our rear ends, today was much better. Practicing speedwork on grass last time we ran also seems to have helped a lot, since our last .6 miles over grass ended up at a 10 minute pace, and that was running easy.
We saw so many deer. So many. And heard the Great Horned Owl again, in the exact same place we heard him the first time.10 -

I find the discussion of temperatures on here insane all through the year - here in the UK, anything below 0C (32F) is considered incredibly cold. In the same way, anything above 25C (77F) is pretty much considered a heatwave. Some of your bodies are used to very different temperatures to us Brits! Give us rain though and we are fine14

Jan 15: run 6 km (3.5 miles)
To be on topic (though I could not read thoroughly all posts: I LOVED running at 0°C. Was thinking (without having read the posts here) during the above run how stimulating the cold is. While when the sun's shinning on me I feel like lacking power much too soon. I actually haven't ran at freezing temps before... as far as I can remember. Would have been afraid of catching a cold In fact, I used to find running boring before.
Having said that, I'll have a look at the 10k races in my area ;-). Family races would also be cool.
Have a wonderful day, lovely people :flowerforyou:

No run last night. I had a terrible headache and stomachache, and I’m not feeling much better today. I also have a bit of congestion going on, so I think i might be coming down with something. I hope I will feel better as the day goes on.
Also, regarding the temperature discussion, living my whole life in the southern US, I can deal with 90+F with no problem, but I struggle with cold temps. I am naturally cold and almost always have a blanket around inside my house, even though it might be 70 inside. My husband is from NY and lived in Alaska and thinks I’m nuts.7 -

this is true, however we also have DAMP cold, so whilst a Canadian -14 degrees C is fine because it's dry, a British -2 degrees C might feel worse because the damp gets in your bones.
It's the same with high humidity in the summer. I was in Cairns in 35 degrees C sweating like a pig and uncomfortable, flew to Alice Springs to 45 degrees C of dry heat, and felt much better.9 -
Well, THAT took a while. I go away a few days, and 768 messages and 32 pages later I get to the last message in the thread.
I confess not to have read all. Two things stuck out – Go Coach @Orphia and Go run @7lenny7!!
And good to see @Elise4270 and @hononui in their relay for Dennis.
So I’ve been away hiking in the Pyrenees, learning ice axe self-arrest skills, rock climbing, and climbed a mountain (Aneto in the Spanish Pyrenees, summit 3,404m). Multi-day hiking punishing every muscle in my body. Was sick with a cold much of the week which is annoying, and that certainly made the 2am hunt for a hole to do my business in outside a barely there mountain hut, with nothing but an icy reservoir and certain death waiting for my wrong-footedness exciting!!
that's the peak of Aneto in the middle - in the nasty weather clouds.....
the 'view' from the summit!!!
The snow came in on our way back from the summit. I’ve done as much as minus 35C before so at least had some knowledge of the frozen eyelashes and nostril hair thing before. The scenery of the mountains was amazing, when we could see it. When we couldn’t it was a case of ‘don’t slip down that avalanche-prone glacier’!!!
that's our 'all-mod-cons' hut.....
the way back down. Mountain scenery sucks huh?
Haven’t made it out to run yet. I’m still sick, my shoulder muscles are aching, and I think I’m allowed to forego hill training this week.

1/1-6 Totals: Run 47.6 km
1/7-13 Totals: Run 39.4 km, Other Cardio 115 minutes
1/14 - 11 km run, 1 hr walk, +weight machine
1/15 - stretching, foam rolling and a nap
1/16 - Treadmill 5.2 km speed workout, +core work
Monday's icy run/walk had me feeling pretty defeated, but today I got up the courage to go try the gym (at the pool complex where I already have a card with money on it that can be used at any of their facilities). This was actually an accomplishment, as just the thought of going to a gym causes all sorts of anxiety for me. I did about a half an hour on the treadmill and actually enjoyed it. Enough that there may be a next time, and I may plan to swim afterwards. I looked at the gym machines as I was walking by, but did my regular core routine at home. Baby steps!
