WOMEN AGES 50 + FOR JANUARY 2019

I am just starting out to lose weight this year after being off here a few years. I have 70 lbs. to lose and it seems impossible. I want my 2019 word to be "balance" because I put most of my time into work and do nothing for myself.5

We just got home from our anniversary movie event. We saw "Green Book" and it was fabulous.
Sue in WA, best wishes to your husband in finding a solution

Welcome. Try picking a word that is something you can concentrate on doing rather than a word that describes an outcome. You can do this. The longest journey starts with a single step.SweetPie3121 wrote: »I am just starting out to lose weight this year after being off here a few years. I have 70 lbs. to lose and it seems impossible. Welcome. I found MFP at age 62 after decades of failure at the weight loss game. It worked this time. I took it one day at a time, took baby steps in making changes, and checked in with this thread every day for motivation and support.

Did a workout on the rebounder today. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Barbie – thanks for the suggestion. I called a yarn place around here. The only thing I could find was that they helped someone with a knitting project, so I don’t know for sure that they also work with crochet. I would tend to think so but I asked them anyway
Welcome everyone new!
Viv – I sure do remember fiddling with the horizontal and vertical hold. Those were the days!!! How I wish Vince would get rid of stuff! For example, I asked him last year if we need this bug zapper that we’ve never used. He didn’t want to get rid of it. I asked him again this year and pointed out that in 10 years we’ve never used it. He didn’t want to get rid of it but I finally succeeded. Well, it took him one day to find something else to put on that shelf where it was!
Allie – I like M and barbie’s suggestion. If you can’t meet at a neutral location for the exchange of the dogs, I think you’re going to have to change your mindset otherwise every time you go in the house you’ll feel sad. Or hard as it would be, you may have to let them go.
Not going to log today since I never know what people will bring to Rummikub and I just feel that it’s rude not to at least try what is brought.
Karen in VA – I never knew you could make salmon in the microwave! How long do you cook the salmon for? I’ve fried it, baked it and for some reason, it doesn’t seem to be as juicy as when you get it in a restaurant. Maybe in the microwave will work better. What lovely pics in the calendar! I’m wondering if his dad couldn’t have some of the patients bring in pictures of things like flowers in their field etc. and if he couldn’t paint a pic with that as the basis? Just would sort-of personalize the calendar some. But his pictures are wonderful
Barbara – “vinegar and newspaper”..I don’t know if that would work. BUT….you’ve given me an idea. I wonder if I were to put some vinegar on a paper towel and wipe the inside of the glass before putting it in the dishwasher, would the vinegar take the “cloudiness” away?
Went looking for a car for me. Personally, I don’t have a problem driving a car with a rebuilt transmission. But that makes Vince feel uncomfortable. We found a 2015 Hyundai Elantra for $15,000 with 29K on it. It has all the features that I’m looking for. I do wish it was in silver, but it’s a gray so I think I can live with that. To me, the glove compartment looks small, but I don’t know how much smaller it is than the usable space I have in my glove compartment right now. I do want to test out the water bottle holders, it just seems weird to me that they’re slanted because of the speakers in the way. I did take my water mug with me and it fits (that’s one thing I absolutely hated about the loaner that I had). At least it doesn’t have all that (to me) distracting stuff like pop up speed indicator, indicator to tell you if someone is in the lane next to you, etc. I found most of that stuff to be distracting.
Katla – Craftsman tools are also available at Lowes Hardware
Sue in WA – fingers, toes, eyes, and anything else that I can cross that your dh gets good news
Hosted Rummikub. Tomorrow we have a meeting about the car, they’ll look at my car and tell me how much they’ll give me for a tradein.

Iamauntbeth: Hi neighbor and welcome! I’m just down the road a piece in Bowling Green. Don’t psych yourself out, and there’s plenty of support here.
SweetiePie: welcome to you too. Balance is a great word, and I’m in the midst of finding some with school just starting again. It’s always a juggling act, isn’t it? But you’re right—we can’t do this without taking time for ourselves.
Have a great Wednesday all!

So I probably strained a muscle in my right leg. The recommendation is to focus on cycling for a little while so it can heal. Fortunately, that was exactly what I was planning to do!
No stretching yet ... just let it heal a while first.
However, I do have to decide if I want to do a particular 10K run in February.
Barbie - Happy Anniversary!!
Welcome to the newcomers.

I am working on reframing my attitude towards 'failure'. Not every path leads to where you want to go. However, you often successfully reveal, and can eliminate, a strategy that doesn't work for you. I choose to view this as a victory, use it as a learning opportunity, and look for another route to my destination.
This has helped me lose over 60lbs so far. At the moment I am still eliminating many unworkable strategies. 😂SweetPie3121 wrote: »I am just starting out to lose weight this year after being off here a few years. Sue in WA I hope your husband gets good news soon.
Machka: One step at a time. Only you know how it feels and how far you can push it.
Viv: I remember almost the whole street squeezing into a neighbour's parlour to squint at a tiny screen to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in the 1950's. I was about 7 at the time. Those were the days.
Pip: Great picture! You and Kirby are a lovely fit.

Morning ladies, thanks for giving such insightful advice about not giving up, reminding me that the small steps are the important steps and consistency is the key. I need to be reminded of the basics so often you'd think I'm stuck in the movie "groundhog day"

I don't know how this happened, but so far I have no appointments tomorrow. I have work, of course, but no appointments. Weird!6

Had a great Swing Dance (Lindyhop) last night. We rarely go out in the evening, so it was a stretch, but I enjoyed it. Only a ten minute walk to get there. Over 30 people attending and more or less 50% men. That is unusual.
Poor DH had a horrible cold/chest, but soldiered on, despite dripping with sweat. Will definitely go again. We were probably the oldest there, but it was all ages, which was nice.
I had also done my 5k that afternoon, so had a good calorie burn! I ran round the park four times listening to two Soul Music podcasts. Vaughan Williams and Richard Straps, 4 Last Songs.
DH is really low in energy today, so I'm going into town on my own this pm. Want to look in a couple of specialist shops, including a big Indian grocery, called Taj. It's drizzly and windy and chilly.
I decided against the yoga class. Too expensive, wrong time of day, and too "posh". I want a more local community group.

Machka... I am glad your pain is from a pulled muscle only. My Dad, 90 yrs, is having surgery this morning (bone glue procedure) to cement compression fractures that are affecting his sciatica causing pain through the hip that radiates toward the groin. Enjoy your day with no appointments!!
I had a horrible day with my eating yesterday. Stayed within my IF window (closed it 2 hours early actually) but you would've thought I was in a race to see how many sweets I could eat. As a result I had a miserable night with stomach upset. No energy this morning and I have plenty to do since I may very well be traveling to my Dad in the next day or so. I'm not sure how many more of these kinds of "lessons" I can take. Sigh.

Hello everyone. I'm behind again--seems to be a natural state for me. I've noticed I tend to stay away from here when the scale is moving in the wrong direction. Or maybe, the scale moves in the wrong direction when I stay away from here? Anyway, I'm down another pound toward my goal weight, so here I am to brag. Y'all keep me accountable. I don't think I need the boot just yet, but 192 was getting discouraging, showing up every day this week. Welcomed 191 this morning, and hope she doesn't plan to stick around long.
The weather is nicer today, so maybe a good walk or bike ride? Yesterday I made a lap-sized quilt top I'm hoping to donate to a church fundraiser. I started to press the back fabric, and discovered stains on it. It came through the move four years ago and was in storage, so it's anyone's guess what got on it. I think I got it all out, but I'll need to see it in good light before I decide if I can use it.
I've been learning to cook with my new Instant Pot, trying to figure how to cook veggies without them turning to mush. I've got a steamer shipping in a week or two, so that should help. I also got a new helmet for my bicycle. I wasn't planning on using one, but figured I might want to ride somewhere other than our local park. Reading the reviews for the different choices, made me glad I changed my mind on the head protection. I thought cars were the only real risks, but it seems a lot of cyclists hit obstacles and go over the handlebars, head first. I'm too old to bounce back from that, so I'll have to get used to the helmet. I bought a gadget to measure my distance based on the tire rotations. It would probably be better to use my phone app, but I'm not technical at all, and my phone is very outdated and temperamental.
While the weather's been gloomy, I've been trying to finish projects I started. I finished two crocheted infinity scarves, and two hats I made with the knitting loom. I'm hoping to finish crocheting a queen-sized blanket I started seven years ago. It's all single crochet, and it's so heavy I don't know if I'll be able to use it here in Texas. It should be warm, with the cotton yarn and tight stitches. I'll try to get a picture when it's finished and show it here. Next project is that quilt. I've also got a shawl I'm working on, but I don't know if I even want it when it's finished. I might take it apart and make something different. (Now that I'm thinking about it, I probably will.) I've got a quilt rack I bought at a second hand store. I want to sand it down, give it a darker stain, and replace the brass handles on the sides. I've also got a couple necklaces I want to make. I bought some pretty glass pendants in Vegas six years ago, and they were strung on cheap ribbon. I think I can string them onto a beaded chain, and they'll look great. Jewelry making is another hobby I'd love to try, but I've got so many interests, I've been trying hard not to get into that one. I don't think my eyesight is good enough for the fine details.
Adding to that, I've also decided this is the year I get started publishing my books. I'll need my husband's help for that, which means trying to find a time when he's not busy with work or his game stuff. He doesn't know any more than I do about the self-publishing world, but he's a technical genius, and he knows the terminology. I don't even know what I don't know.
Oh, by the way, I've been ordering the kids meals from Chick Fil A, and they come with little toys. The recent ones have these little boxes of questions and conversation starters, called Table Topics. I'll post a few here, if anyone's interested in sharing their answers.
What tiny object is most precious to you?
When you've had a tough day, what makes you feel better?
What would you like to celebrate?
What's your biggest wish in life?

When I put losing weight and getting healthy at the top of my priority list, I began to look for every opportunity to be active which included not letting the weather (except in great extremes like roads covered with black ice) decide whether I would go walking. Then I realized how much time I devoted to sedentary activities especially knitting and traded crafts for walking and exercise. That has made all the difference. I am no longer known as the woman who does fabulous knitting, but am known as the woman who reinvented her life through weight loss.

Sue in WA: Sending good thoughts for your DH. I hope the MRI results are good.
(((Lenora))) I hope things improve with the doctors office. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: The tribe has a huge advantage over the senior center—they’re serving extended family and are socially connected. I‘m sure they have higher standards and a better understanding of what foods are healthy for their senior population. Somebody at the senior center needs to make changes in the quality of their meal offerings. :grumble:
Heather: It is good to see you happy in your new home. I hope DH feels better soon.
Pip: I love the family photo. Beautiful!
Cari in TX: The tiny object most precious to me is my wedding ring. It was hand crafted using a lost wax technique by a goldsmith in Eugene, OR 49 years ago. DH has one, too. Both are waves coming onto a beach. Biggest wish is that DH feels better. He has diabetes, MS, and digestive issues that have required him to go to a FODMAP diet. We are making progress with his digestive issues. I say “we” because I’m not only a cheer leader for him, I also eat most of the same foods. His dietary restrictions are my restrictions to a large extent. I still eat wheat bread. He has wheat-free bread because wheat causes him to have horrible problems.
We like the new dishwasher, but it was advertised as having a cash rebate. The manufacturer denied us the rebate. We’re planning to go to the store where we bought it for support. I hope they’re able to help.

Barbara - I could make the lace with my Cricut but it would have to be paper and she wants genuine lace. I have figured out the costs associated with her invitations and even if we buy the lace from Michael’s at full price we are still coming in at less than 300 for her invitations so they aren’t as expensive as her sisters were. There is a discount fabric store here we are going to go to tomorrow to see if I can find a better deal. The real lace goes much better with here theme.
Bonnie - how will you be able to let Ollie go? My in-laws fostered children for a while, it’s not something I could do. I grow too attached too fast.
Sharon - you seem to be doing well after your surgery good for you! I have read the first 7 books in the Outlander series. I should find the rest. I haven’t watched the series yet, but feel from all that I have read that I should give it a try. I watched the first episode but it wasn’t what I had pictured on my head. I have been told by others it is well done though.
I used to be a big Danielle Steel fan and in the 80’s when they turned her books into made for TV movies I watched them until one made no sense to me. In the book, the main female character was expecting and the housekeeper made beef stroganoff and it made her ill. In the TV movie they made that food be spaghetti. I thought, how hard is it to match the book with something so minor? I also know that it’s so minor it shouldn’t bug me but here we are around three decades later and I still remember it.
Yvonne - the red dress day reminded me of my Grandmother. My husband too a graphic design program in 2000, one of his assignments was to retouch an old black and white photo and make it coloured. He chose a picture of my Grandmother taken in the 1941 that my Grandfather carried with him overseas when he was in WWII. My husband made the dress red, we sent the picture to my Grandmother and she called immediately and told us what colour the dress was and that a lady should never wear red. We still chuckle at that memory, but my husband changed the dress to navy and we sent her another copy.
Sue in WA - I hope your husband’s cancer has not grown. Such a terrible disease.
Machka - a strained muscle is so much easier to deal with than something more serious. I bet you’ll truly enjoy your day if no appointments!!!!
Cari - I order happy meals from McDonald’s a lot. I love the trivia questions more than the plastic toys I receive. My Grands live it though and think it’s funny I order the meals.
Tough day - hug from my husband
Wish - a job
Barbie - that is a great thing to be known as. I bet some people miss the knitting though.

I wanted to share this, but my previous post was too long on my phone to insert a picture
I went to the grocery store yesterday and found this to make for my husband. He said it was good and would eat it again. I took advantage of this and cooked ham steak for myself!

Michelle Microwaving fish sounds terrible, doesn't it? But it is so fast and so good (not overdone). I wrap the seasoned filets in leaf or romaine lettuce packets (or you can just put filets on a plate & cover with plastic wrap or a microwave cover). I cook at 50% power for about 4 minutes and then check. If it looks almost done, I l just let them rest for another 5 minutes to finish cooking while I finish the side dishes. If it still looks raw, I do another 1-2 minutes on 50% power. If you are more attentive than I am, you can do them on high, but then you have to check every minute to be sure they aren't overcooking, and that's more work than it's worth to me. If I have to stand over them I'd rather cook them in a pan.4

Today is National Religious Freedom Day.
"Each year, the President declares January 16th to be Religious Freedom Day, and calls upon Americans to 'observe this day through appropriate events and activities in homes, schools, and places of worship.' The day is the anniversary of the passage, in 1786, of the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. Thomas Jefferson’s landmark statute became the basis for Congressman Fisher Ames’ establishment clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Consitution. 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…'" This is a serious one, but as Americans fall deeper into division it's good to be reminded that we are a nation founded on the principle of religious freedom for all.
Lenora - I often with He'd left the mosquitoes off the ark as well!
Lanette - How amazing that the injured border collie managed to get itself out of the rocks and find help! They are smart, driven dogs for sure.
Beth - I understand where you're coming from, but maybe you'd benefit from choosing a word for the year that isn't quite so emotionally loaded. Maybe "balance" or "accountability" would be less likely to start you down that black-and-white path to "failure."
Sweet Pie - Welcome!
Michele - I knew Sears was circling the drain when they sold off the Craftsman line to Lowe's. That venerable old company was destroyed by its own CEO. The board of directors should have kicked him to the curb long ago, but instead they opted for short-term gains and let him suck their company dry.
It's grey outside today, so it's a good thing this is Nordic Track day. Luna and I will go outside long enough to meet my step goal, then I can do my "skiing" in a warm room in front of Netflix.
-Yvonne in TX3 -
I enjoyed my trip to the shops, but having to be wrapped up for the outside weather meant I had to undress for the inside. Mildly annoying.
I bought myself some new slippers. My last pair are five years old. I like black velvet ballet type, so I can wear them with smart clothes indoors when we have visitors. I put the old pair in the bin.
I also bought a couple of camisoles. Must make sure I throw the old tatty ones away.
My main mission was to look at the food stores and I enjoyed that. I bought myself a couple of packs of ready meal, vacuum packed, curried lentils. Will try those when DH is out. They were half price.
Tonight did prawns and chorizo with a quinoa and chia salad. Lots of broccoli and mushrooms I precooked in the IP.
Cari - If it's a delicate vegetable, like broccoli, you set it to 0 minutes and then do a quick release and get it out immediately. Seems to work.
Dessert is stewed apricots with homemade yoghurt. Gorgeous!
DH is still suffering with his chest. He will be watching football tonight in "his" study. I am watching programmes about healthy eating and living.
Tomorrow I'm going to my first contemporary dance class in Brighton. It's called Threescoredance. Really hope I love it.
The glazier is coming to mend the glass in the dresser. He is replacing the broken side with new glass and making the Victorian glass side more secure with new putty. Expensive, but it has to be done.
