Allie, I'm not surprised that your new boss likes you. We have all known for years how likable and capable you are. Congrats on smaller clothes. That is a much more reliable measure of your weight loss than anything the scale can tell you.
Lisa, Hooray for your scheduled surgery.
Sasha had terrible diarrhea last night so I was up and walking her every two hours. Jake walked her a bunch of times this morning and considered calling the vet. We decided to wait til the end of the day to decide. After lunch Sasha took a really long nap and then she and I took a 60 minute walk with no troubles so Jake gave her a slice of bread for a small bland meal and we decided not to call the vet.
There were two new students in line dance today so I slowed things down for the first few dances to help them feel comfortable and then speeded things up for the rest of the class. The new students seemed to be having fun and said they'd be back next week. I came home to lunch prepared by Jake (scrambled eggs and hash browns with onion). After lunch he washed the dishes. Life doesn't get any better than this

Left home at 8 am for our granddaughter’s swim meet. It lasted from 10 til 2. We hadn’t had lunch so we stopped on the way home. After sitting all day, I had to go for a walk even tho it was chilly.
Kim- thinking good thoughts for you and hoping some new opportunities will come your way. Hang in there.
Sue and Viv- sorry you are going through difficult times.
Sharon- your posts brought tears to my eyes. When I count my blessings, my DH is number one. Your Allan was very special and I know you miss him very much.
Suebdew in TX5 -
Did the Firm Maximum Cardio Burn DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Amy Dixon Give me 10 DVD
Viv – I think your mother IS in some sort of denial. Agree with how to talk to your family about the situation (he may not be able to do this). You were given some really good advice
NYKaren – happy birthday!
Just found out (I’m not supposed to know this) who the next officers for Newcomers will be. Sandi is going for vice president. She’s the gal who really wanted to work with me and couldn’t understand why we were reinventing the wheel. Talking to her about the website might very well produce positive results. Seems that Adra has made a new application and is going to present it. Last I knew she was going to work with me. Well, we shall see what it’s like. I’m suspecting very limiting. She’s the one who thinks the directory is “breaking down”. She’s the one who thought by updating email address on the web would automatically update the mail list. It can’t. Our web has nothing to do with Google mail list. I like how I’m involved in things. Well, now they want to have individual memberships which means that I’d like to somehow just deactivate a member. This way, should they return, we’d still have all the information (email, etc) for the person. But right now I only have a delete member ability. If I use that and the person comes back, they’ll need to fill out a whole new application.
Tracey – what’s the job like? I do hope you get it. It’s so much better when you are doing something you really enjoy, you tend to go above and beyond.
Lisa – what wonderful news!
Carol – OUCH!!! Hope your finger is better fast Isn’t it amazing, we really don’t realize just how much we depend on our thumb. I remember when I had trigger thumb, it was amazing the things I couldn’t do (or do with a lot of pain)
Went to see “Murder on the Nile”. Pretty good.
Got an email from the current president (who I hope will go for serious grief therapy). She hopes I will cover loose ends while they transition to find someone to fill this role (hospitality). Ahhh...no. Come April I'm outta there. Then she asks: Will you be staying on the web team in the roll of new members welcome and entry ? After the way I've been treated? Does she even want me? I probably will stay, but there needs to be changes. For one thing, I can't be left out in the cold when something refers to my job. So we shall see.... Vince said he'd help formulate a response for me that would basically leave it openended because he knows me and I'm an emotional type of person.

Lisa in AR: Sending good thoughts for your knee replacement on the 5th. I hope surgery goes well and you heal quickly.
Okie: Thanks for the information about cheddar cheese not containing lactose. No wonder I can eat it and not become miserable. Yay!
Pip: Love your picture at the barbecue.
(((Michele in NC))) You have given your time and effort to the Newcomers for a long time and haven’t gotten the thanks or respect that you richly deserve. I’m glad that Vince will help you with your response to them.

So many posts that I only had time to scan them.
My heart goes out to all those who are ill, or have family who are ill. May you find the fortitude you need to move forward. So many people have offered their advice and I don't think I can add to what has already been said.
Lisa in AR: All the best for the 5th. May your surgeon's skill be sure, and your recovery speedy.
Sharon near Seattle: (((hugs))) Your Allan was a special person.
☘️ Terri2 -
Sharon: Thank you for writing that out for us on Allan's journey with you. Your strength in letting him leave through the door he chose was as special as the man you were with. I'm sorry you lost him so soon.
Barbie: Loving your life, as well. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks for all the comments on the knee surgery. I've known it was in my future for many years, waited as long as I could to start the process, and am glad that it will be happening quickly. Especially because I tend to dread these things, and it's good that I will have a short time for my apprehensions to run amok.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR4 -
Machka - you could create a blog (in your "spare" time, lol) teaching the caregivers what it's really like to deal with their set of instructions for your husband's care. Are you able to stay calm? I'm afraid I would have had some melt-downs with these folks... or my sarcasm in response to their suggestions would be dripping from the walls. Glad you'll have access to your Gram's funeral.
Sometimes I can stay calm. Sometimes I'm over it enough that I just think ... "OK, here we go again."
But if they persist, I head into the sarcasm, and I usually have to end the conversation because my level of sarcasm escalates to the point, I actually cannot carry on a conversation because I've got a sarcastic response to just about every word they say.
Occasionally, I get into the yelling. This is usually after I've had a calm conversation that didn't help ... then a sarcastic conversation that didn't help ... and they're still pursing their idiotic line of thinking ...
Way back, I was on the phone with a bank. I had 3 or 4 conversations and email exchanges to find out what I needed to do to access our accounts. On the first conversation, they actually hung up on me! But I finally got to the point where I had filled in the appropriate paperwork and had faxed it. Faxed!! Can you imagine?? I actually had to find a photocopier with the fax option!! I called them back to make sure they had it and to make progress, and got "You didn't send the right paperwork". My tone escalated to heavy sarcasm ... and then yelling. Finally I hung up and called back a little later (hoping to get a different person, and did). Same response ... I hadn't sent the right form, and he was about to hang up on me. I was right into yelling then, and while I was bellowing and screaming into the phone, I suddenly heard him say, "Oh wait ... here it is. Everything is all right and we'll process this right away". That time all the yelling seemed to work! Encouraged him to take a second look at things.

Back from the doc. They're replacing my right knee on the 5th (11 days from now). Been so long since I dealt with anyone besides VA doctors and the VA system that I am in shock at how soon it can be done. Wild. Anticipating it, but both in the positive and the negative sense. Just want it done, and to be out the other side and healing. After it's healed up and functioning, they want me in to do the left knee.
Thinking of everyone here is keeping my mind off my own stuff. Love y'all!

My cold is worse. I feel ok in myself, but very sinussy. Did not get much sleep from being blocked up. Face ache.
However DH finished the washing up from last night and then staggered out to buy the newspaper. Then he made coffee - and was totally exhausted. I've done my exercises, but it took much longer than normal. But I did them!!!!
We will be very happy when we are over this.
I'm pleased I've been able to work out a solution to my York trip. I won't book tickets in advance as I'm not sure which trains I will be able to catch, but I do get a third off tickets with my Senior Rail Card. I am going to try to look forward to it now. My friend is delighted I am coming.
Lisa - Sending well wishes for your op. Of course you will be nervous, but how great it will be to be able to exercise again without pain. (Eventually)
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx2 -
It's controversial here, but I figure since Canada has a day, Australia might as well too. Plus it means that I've got time off work again.

Just sharing our painting fun from yesterday.
Tracey- Good luck with the perspective new position! I hope you get it!
Allie- Congrats on Onederland! and Why wouldn't your new boss like you? What's not to like?!
Rita- Are you taking your measurements as well as weighing yourself? When I am losing and I begin to gain, and I haven't been cheating on my meal plan, it is usually because I am gaining muscle from the extra exercise. Measure yourself. I bet that is what is going on.
Heather - So glad your York trip is going to happen. Now, you just need to stay healthy!
Lisa- You have a date for your knee replacement! Yahoo! Pain free in the near future!
Pip- I love that picture of Kirby and your brother! lol
I have to scoot out to get my groceries and errands run. I just have Jonah and Julian today, and the won't be here until 3:30. Julian (he is the eleven year old) said something to me last night as we were cleaning up after dinner (we had ham, eggs, and pancakes for dinner) that just made my heart ache. He said, "Thank you, Miss Kel. I love your food. You have such good food here. We only get macaroni and cheese or sometimes toast or pizza at home; unless grandma is visiting us." Ugh! So hard to think of kids either not getting enough to eat or not getting enough healthy food options.
Oh well, better get busy. Love to you all! Tere- Welcome back! Wonderful to hear/see your voice on here again! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)9 -
Kelly, the painting looks like so much fun.
Heather, Your cold seems to be lasting forever. I wish you health and energy soon.
Machka, enjoy your day off for Australia Day.

Machka in Iz - 32K! That’s lovely! Your husband is coming along beautifully, and you must have been so happy to enjoy the weather and scenery! I totally “get” your recap of how conversations go. It’s pretty much my style too. Most folks are honestly trying to do their job - they just allow that job to put blunders on them. Occasionally, though, I run into someone who seems to take pleasure in belittling me or obstructing. Conversation over, and I’m looking for someone higher up at once.
Oh dear, Heather! - Sounds like a sinus infection for you! That can be nasty also! If it isn’t better in a day or so, it’s doctor time for you too! Sounds like your husband IS on the mend, but slow and careful would be a good motto. Sounds like you’ve never been slow about anything, however. You sound more like the “I WILL. do this!” sort!
Lusa in AR - congrats on getting your knee done! It’s great to be out of painnwhen it’s all healed. What part of AR are you near? I stayed in an AirBnB in a tiny town named Leslie a couple of summers ago that was just great. So friendly, and all the neat old buildings were there with dining and shops being very modern.
I am back to work, but finding myself tiring pretty easily. Fortunately my supervisor understands what I need and has made my end of shift an hour earlier. He also said if I gave no appointments scheduled I can come in later if I wish. I’m very grateful for the consideration. I’m the eldest there at 75. But I’m also one of the best with difficult clients in EITHER sense of the word.
When I came home last night I was starving, but wanted soup more than anything, so into the microwave went a couple of cups of unsalted chicken broth, 2 cut up hard boiled eggs and about 3/4 cup of mixed seasoned greens. Ready in 3 minutes, tasted heavenly and leftovers for today!
Thank you to all who found my memoir of Allan spoke to them. He was indeed special. A poet, sculptor and hard-working house husband, he took on 2teenagers and a 4YO. he was 14 years older, but had the energy and outlook of a young man. We had 28 wonderful years, all told. More than my parents got with mom dying at 43. He never thought he’d be happily married again, much less raise a child and see grandchildren. We had it all, and I’ve no regrets.

Sharon: Your Allan was an incredible man, and you were amazingly courageous to support him in his last wishes. One day we will all face a loss that is beyond bearing. I hope that when it is my turn I will be a strong as you.
Allie: Congratulations! It is good to have the respect of your boss and his compliment was clearly well deserved. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: Congrats on a great day.
Machka: Is there an alternative medical care option for your DH that would allow you to ditch the stupid woman you’ve been dealing with? Can you ask for him to be transferred to another person in the group? You need to be respected and treated appropriately. :grumble: Happy Australia Day!
Our neighbor went in for hip replacement surgery several days ago & we haven’t heard anything about his situation yet. I hope all is well. I plan to ask another neigbor if they have had any word on Joe’s condition.

Sharon - Love your stories about Allan. He sounds so special. As are you. My DH never dreamed he would have grandchildren through a new partner. What a joy that has been for him.
Barbie - I am feeling c..p. No energy. Face ache. Grrrrrrrrrr! However, I detect an improvement in DH. Patience is the key. This virus has run through the family. Bea has been on antibiotics. My DDIL has had it badly. I've got off lightly in comparison, but I'm not liking it. Hoping for better tomorrow.
I watched a very interesting programme I had recorded this pm, about death and dying, one of my favourite subjects. DH is watching football next door - he hates the subject. The other programme I watched was about hospitals. Nice to have the time and space to indulge.
I was all set to try to run/toddle this afternoon, but DH wanted to go out for a short walk, so I let him go as we were expecting an Amazon delivery. It started to rain and blow. By the time he came back I had lost my enthusiasm! Good job I exercised this morning. Even though I don't feel hungry at all I still want to eat. When DH feels ill he doesn't want to eat. He is a naturally thin person and I am not. I can only stay slim by lots of exercise. For me eating is the answer to every problem, including feeling sick!
Oh well. The Amazon delivery was a very welcome 2 bottles of Pernod. Plus some yoga/ballet socks.

Question for Suebdew and others doing low-sugar eating with success.... are you cutting back all sugar including natural sugar in dairy and whole fruits, or only the added sugar in processed foods, soda, candy, desserts, etc.?
I'm re-reading Dr. Lustig's "Fat Chance" book today. This book plus "That Sugar Film" by Damon Gameau raised my awareness of the dangers of added sugar last year. The concept of saving sugary treats for once or twice a week or in very small portions = dessert only, not snacks, (much like I was raised) is often enough for some of us to get our health and weight back in line without drastically changing our diets. Especially if we're gearing toward a Mediterranean type food plan.
Just some observations on this foggy and chilly morning - where I'm chomping at the bit to go work in the garden a little.
Sending warm thoughts to those of you in the Midwest deep freeze this week.

Lanette, I don't eat dessert with very rare exceptions. I don't eat doughnuts, pastries, muffins, pie, ice cream, cake, etc. My rare exceptions happen only a few times a year. I tend to avoid sauces and condiments which are often made with sugar added. If you want to know more about cutting back on all sugar, I recommend that you read "The Year of No Sugar" by Eve Schaub. I loved the book and it helped me find a low sugar balance for my life.4

I'm home and lying down...think I might be having a slight case of diverticulitis left side is painful .but no fever or nausea...so going to take a nap... if I'm not better later might have you take myself to a walk in..wont go to ER because it would cost me 4500.003

Thanks, Barbie - I read "The Year of No Sugar" several years ago and just ordered it again from the library. You've done a great job keeping your weight off and you are a testament to cutting back on sugar. I think your mentioning this book earlier sparked my curiosity.
Margaret, I think you talked about Lustig's book a while back. He targets Fructose as the bad actor, and explains how it's metabolized vs. glucose (starches and half the component of white table sugar) and why it causes fatty liver. Fructose in fruit brings fiber along so it's not considered damaging like added sugar in processed foods, or fruit juices which eliminate the fiber.
It's been an interesting journey learning about what makes us fat and unhealthy, and how to get back on track to health and fitness.

Just skimming and only up through pg 72, but I've been sitting way too long, past time for knee exercises.
Rebecca your husband's piece of cornbread made me giggle. Reminded me of the cat I had who took one bite out of each of the dozen muffins I'd just baked... ;} LOVE the happy hat!
Michele I love the yoghurt pops idea, have some limeade in the freezer, may give it a try. Never have trouble going through a large container of Greek yoghurt, it's my go-to to meet the protein goal at end of day.
Karen in VA those are better than just good marks... imho. Kudos to you both!
Lisa Oh what a relief it is!
Heather more and more your DH sounds like he had pneumonia... the persistent cough, weakness and long recovery. Do I remember a bad reaction to the antibiotics? Some inflamed skin? Would it be v. difficult to get him back to the MD for a followup? Tatties, neeps and bsprouts yum. Haggis and salmon :noway: I don't drink much hard liquor, but do love the smokey peaty flavor of Laphroaig (sp?).
Allie new shirts fit, what a great NSV! Then Onderland, you ROCK!
Yvonne loved the National Compliment Day. Food for thought...
Machka Aaaaugh. The back-to-work coordinator is just so premature. Surprised she's even involved with no back to work date yet set by your husband's MD. Can the MD tell her "don't call us, we'll call you!"?
Sue in WA 50 years. Ditto those who say you and your husband continue in our prayers.
Barbie "finite life together and I want to make the most of it" just what I needed to hear. Thank you.
Kim ditto what Barbie and others said about your resourcefulness. If you could choose the way to make $$ during those 13 hours/week what would it be?
Viv (((hugs))) Ditto NYKaren, Machka and Heather. Would your mother go to a caregiver's support group? Sometimes it's easier for mothers to hear from others what they can not hear from their daughter.
Tere "...groan for a few minutes and move on" Love that strategy!

Yes that is a good summary of Lustig's book. I do find books like his helpful in my keeping my sugar lower. This group helps to keep me on track too.
Right now at 172 and 5' 8'' I am not at my lowest. I am 20 pounds down from where I was last year. I notice when I let sugary foods like ice cream and bread back into my diet that is when the weight starts to creep on.
Not all the books I read agree. One thing they all seem to have in common is the sweets and breads affect insulin levels and insulin is part of what caused the body to create fat.
I do know my knee is doing better at the lower weight. I also bought some new shoes yesterday because I was starting to feel some discomfort in a hip.
When I had the knee problem a few years ago the PT noticed my shoes and said they were part of the problem.
Staying warm and inside in the Midwest. Arctic Blast this week.

Viv: I think she is less in denial than beginning the grieving process. She is overwhelmed, tired, maybe even upset that she is giving over control to caregivers even though she knows she needs help. She is angry that he will leave her, doesn’t appreciate what she is doing and protecting herself from grief. Neither one can help what is happening and not really capable of supporting each other. It’s so difficult. Someone mentioned validation, and yes, she needs that too. I cannot tell you how many people that I have advocated for to meet death on their own terms, yet I was angry at my dad for years after his death when he did it his way. It was selfish, but I still needed someone to say that I could feel that way. Just being there, listening and loving, is an amazing help and gift 💜💜💜4

🎂🎂My 2nd son’s birthday is today. I wish he wasn’t so far away in southern CA, but that was his dream to live out there. Some of the kids in my online classes thought I was kidding when I said I had kids older than half of the class, but it’s true.
It boggles the mind how much trouble people get into driving out here in barely a 1/2 inch of snow. Every time! Watching that Midwest Arctic blast, Margaret. My mom and most of my family is in Chicago. We are supposed to get 4 inches of snow down here first on Monday night and then the deep freeze, but not as bad as there. I saw this morning that central and northern Wisconsin had temps in the -30s°. Yikes!
Feeling a bit puny today: blood sugars a bit low, but worse is this vertigo. Almost fell in the shower bending over to rinse out my hair. It makes me tired to be so nauseous and dizzy.
Later, ladies,
Kathy in KY
