New cold PR for me! Started my run with the temp at -1F(-18C). Not @7lenny7 levels, but hey... beats the dreadmill.8

5 trail miles at Stanky Creek. That's my last run for January, and also the last time my husband and I will practice at Stanky Creek before our race there on Feb 10th.
I can't say today's run was reassuring - my husband wiped out, making the score for our four runs there so far Stanky 3, us 1. Last week we were being extremely slow and cautious, this week we tried going a little faster, without trying to push it too much. We were running a mostly smooth bit, therefore going a little faster, and he caught his toe on a hidden stob and catapulted himself into the ground so hard it completely knocked the wind out of him for about a minute and a half. I'm familiar with that sensation, having fallen off a few horses back in the day. Anyway he's unhurt except for a stubbed toe and battered looking forearm and was able to get up and finish after he got his breath back.
Well, I had a good run, anyway! 🙄
Even accounting for the minute and a half pause we were two minutes faster overall than last week's cautious pace, and for me at least all the leaping up and down tree roots is starting to feel doable. It remains to be seen what running it with 600 other people at the same time will be like - it's a course which will definitely punish you if you hurry or make mistakes! It was also dry today, whereas at the moment the forecast for the race is four days of rain. I'm not even sure how to get up some of the steep muddy slopes if they are wet.
Couldn't have had a nicer day, gentle sunlight and almost 50. Just this morning my mom had to carry water from the house to the barn because the wellhead in the barn was frozen. I'm glad the crazy weather is gone and hope it stays gone!10 -
I've been really pleased with my running in January. I've managed to keep up with my plan to run 3 times per week even if some of these were on the treadmill. In February I will complete my Nike 10K plan and then I think I would like to do it again with a slightly faster target pace as I hitting all the paces that I need to fairly easily at this point. I would also like to do more track running now that the treadmill has given me an idea of what different paces feel like.12

Yesterday I got to run 1.81 miles home from the gym for my official last run of January. I hadn’t been planning on it, but I hadn’t run since my race on Saturday and have been going a bit stir-crazy. This was officially my coldest run at -6 F (-17 windchill), although substantially shorter than the 10K last weekend around 0.
And yeah, it was great. Cold, but great. Honestly, if I could have changed just one thing it wouldn’t have been the snow or the cold, it would have been the dark. That or getting myself a pair of contact lenses so I didn’t have to deal with fogged up glasses while wearing a buff over my face.
I decided to give my new Decathlon duds another go - there was some conversation earlier in January about this affordable French brand apparently everyone outside of the US knows, so I picked up a few pieces of winter gear: headband, hat, gloves, pants, and underwear. Just over $50 total with free shipping for orders over $50 and free 100% satisfaction returns, which is definitely my speed.
I haven’t worn the headband yet as it seems WAYYY too thin for me to trust my ears to it in this weather, even if it is supposed to be for cold weather. I’ll try it when it gets closer to freezing and am planning on picking up one of their ski headbands and see if that’s better. I don’t think they expect runners to be out in weather much colder than freezing - the hat I bought wasn’t under the running section at all but is marketed for mountain climbing.
As a side note, the website is not as descriptive as it could be - a lot of the descriptions are clearly somewhat sloppily translated and the weather estimates (when they currently designate F or C) are questionable. The search function doesn't always work, even when you're searching for the exact name of a product, and a lot of stuff seems to be out of stock at any given time. That said, the ordering process was smooth and my order was processed and delivered very quickly. Also, customer service seems pretty responsive.
Anyhow, this was at least my second run with everything except the headband and it’s all been through the wash once and stood up fine.
The hat I already knew was great - I liked it so much when I took it out last week that I wore it to the 10K last weekend. Both then and yesterday I pulled a buff over my ears and chin and tucked the hat over it, and my head and ears were perfectly fine. I don’t like wearing hats much when I run but am really pleased with this one and would order another one if it hadn't gone out of stock. It was cold enough yesterday that I wouldn’t have minded a better face-mask, but I just feel stupid in balaclavas so I might just suck it up. It doesn't get this cold that often. Really.
The gloves are tight and on the thin side, but I prefer that. Touchscreen bit works fine if the fingers are lined up right. My hands don’t get cold very easily so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend them to everyone. I wore them with a cheap pair of the world’s cheapest knit gloves on top and was fine. A little cold for the first mile and then warmed up but not so much that I needed to take off either pair, though if I’d run much longer I probably would have removed the top pair. My hands really don’t get that cold.
Not technically winter gear, but for $6 I figured it’d be worth trying out some “running briefs”. I basically forgot I was wearing them, they worked under capris for lifting, and they made it through the wash fine, so I’m planning on picking up another 2-3 pairs.
Finally, the only item that cost more than $10 - the pants. These were very comfortable and warm on their own and under jeans last week. They’re slightly too large but as I’m primarily planning on wearing them over capris on the way back from the gym this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If I tuck my top base layers into my pants I don’t need the drawstring, and while I don’t love cuffed pants they’re worth it in the cold.
Both times I ran home in them I did end up with a cold butt, but honestly nothing worse than I’ve gotten in much warmer temps and nothing I can’t deal with for a short run. I’m planning on picking up at least another pair of these as well.

I forgot to report my stair climbing for January.
For two weeks I did great, but during that second week I also started running and the workload of the two activities combined really wore down my legs so I haven't done any stair climbing in the last 9 days. Time to start up again!
For January I climbed the equivalent of 387 floors, for 3870 feet of elevation gain and loss.
I'm currently 2700 feet behind my pro-rated target for the year (100,000 feet between runs and stairs) but when I start running trails with consistency I should be able to catch up.

I finished January with 135 miles. The month started off slow since I took most of December off from running. I finished up last night with 7.7 miles. Schedule called for a tempo run, but there was still a lot of ice around and it was dark and still pretty cold out, so I just took it kind of easy. I did pick up the pace in areas that felt safe to do so. I am really not sure how far I ran total. My Garmin was set for indoor running and I forgot to switch it back, so I did not realize until I finished that it wasn't using GPS. Typically, my Garmin shorts me on mileage when I run indoors, and the pace I was running did feel a bit faster than what it said, but I am just going to have to go with it.
My HRM also freaked out again and gave me ridiculously high HR numbers, which also translated to an insanely high calorie burn. I never used to pay attention to my calorie burn because I used to log loosely based on a TDEE, but since I am trying to drop a few pounds, I have been trying to actually count my calories. I don't think this works for me because it makes me dread my rest days. Probably going to switch back to TDEE starting in Feb, only lower it a notch.9 -

If you want bacon, the Flying Pig Marathon on the first Sunday in May has some unofficially from someone that evidently cooks and passes it out every year and I believe others along the course do the same as well. The FP was my first marathon and while I didn’t have any bacon during the race I loved the race theme and the support is fantastic. Highly recommend!
On a whim this past summer, to keep the pig theme going, I signed up for the Hogeye during their early registration period. That said, in the fall, I later registered for another marathon on the same day as a good portion of my running group is running Milwaukee and I initially thought of my dual registration as “weather insurance” if snow/cold up north for race day I would head south and if too hot in AR the I would stay closer to home...but also tempted to see if I can transfer the Hogeye race but haven’t contacted the RD to see if they would accommodate as they don’t talk about it is an option positively or negatively on their website.
If you are talking to the RD perhaps you can inquire about a friend not able to run and would they be willing to accommodate a name switch and what we would have to do. Thinking, I could drop my insurance policy and you can save some money as I paid far less than the current price of you want to run this race.

To be honest, another part of the reason to run this is because I am doing a marathon on 4/13 in KS and this would be 2 in 8 days... which would be enough to join the Marathon Maniacs and would also get me 1 state closer to being able to join the 50 states club. Cincinnati is a bit further, but not a bad idea as I don't have OH. But it would not be 2 marathons in short enough time to join the Marathon Maniacs club. I may send you a friend request so we can PM about it.

I'm just over 200km for the year.. have come down with a throat infection and am calling today and tomorrow rest days. Hopefully I'll be right for a trail run on Sunday!4

I was supposed to run on Jan 29 and 31 but I stepped off a curb with my right foot a little funny and with my ski vacation the following week, I stayed off my foot to let it rest. I finished the month with 85.6 miles over 16 sessions with an average distance ran of 5.35 miles per session at 9:10/mile.
