Yesterday, the gym was quite crowded when I arrived. All treadmills were taken already. It was somewhere around -16F wind chill, so I guess that makes sense. Anyway, I started on the elliptical and wore myself out. When a treadmill opened up, I realized I had gotten too worn out and stopped after 0.80 miles.
Tonight, 4.32 miles treadmill with intervals.

@pastorvincent and @7lenny7 - I have worn several of the Altra models. I had the early One (2) (one squared but don't know how to type that here) and loved them once I figured out the sizing which was really off. They were very fast, I mean I would go out for a run expecting to be on pace and ending up much faster and not even realizing. The only issue I had with them was they wore out really fast for a minimal shoe. I tried to buy one of the later versions of the same shoe but could never get the sizing right (too big, too small, heel slipping, etc.) and gave up on Altras altogether for a while. I tried the Torins maybe even before the Ones. They were too cushy for me but I wore them for walking around shoes for a long time and they were great. They could be slippery on wet surfaces though. Right now I am only wearing Altra Escalantes - the original version and not the newer 1.5s. The reviews on those talked about your foot slipping around in the shoe when running or feeling that way and my trainer had that exact experience. He hasn't given up on them but says they feel very strange.
I passed on the Brooks that were offered to me when I got these Saucony's because they felt like I was running on marshmallows. Way too much cushion. I am not sure what the Saucony Ride 10s are considered, probably medium cushion? But they are a bit too much cushion. It is okay, after a few hundred miles the cushion is beat into submission.
Based on your comments sounds like when I try the Altras I should look at the Escalantes first.0 -
No run tonight. GI issues, think the French Fries at lunch were not as GF as I thought they were. Hopefully get an easy HM in tomorrow. We will see.5

W4D2 run yesterday was pretty good. The running path was pretty clear, so very little worry with slipping, but we just got another round of snow today, so who knows how the path will be tomorrow.

I didn't run yesterday because I was too tired after work and clearing the snow from the driveway.
I was going to run tonight but my wife wanted to try the new Somali restaurant which just opened up a few blocks from our. So we did that and now I am stuffed! I wish I could remember the names of the dishes. I started with a deep fried lentil dish then had some goat meat with a big pile of aromatic rice. So good!
I'll make up the miles this weekend. Planning 10+ tomorrow and 14 on the trail on Sunday.9 -
Well, I did it. I got out and ran this morning, while on vacation! That's a personal best for me. 😉. I also ran my fastest mile since I started getting serious about running again...12.02 minutes. Being in flat, warm Florida is different from the hills of Tennessee. Good luck to all who are racing this weekend!18

@PastorVincent - I am interested in the Solstice but the reviews have not been great so I have held off. I think they are positioned to be between the Escalante and the Ones in cushioning.

Was planning on a 2k warm-up and 3k at HM pace, but my legs just wanted to go faster and faster so I ended up running the whole thing as a 5k build up. I dunno if it's the perfect weather, or the slow warmup that was talked about in the thread a while back, or the fact that it's day 6 of a week-long national holiday and I've finally caught up with my sleep. Ended the run at almost 5k pace, which I find both exhilarating and slightly terrifying
Also on the hunt for new shoes. Just retired a pair of Mizuno Wave Sayonara because they were starting to give me shin splints. Although I'm a bit broke because I just got some Asics Dynaflytes last month on a whim (they are awesome by the way).8 -

We're up in the hills this weekend, hiking today so put run off until tomorrow. Walked more than intended yesterday (rest day) so my legs are tired. Good news is up here I can find a dirt track to do my 20 minute run tomorrow so lower impact. Finally 20 minutes! Stupidly I think I might die. Crazy when I ran a HM 2 months ago today. 🙄5 -

I nearly, nearly didn't go for my run today. My husband wasn't feeling well so cancelled his plans for the day, my brain was being it's annoying self and it's pretty windy round here today (yay for gusts of 37mph!). But I got changed, planned a 5 mile route that didn't go TOO far from home and made myself go and I'm SO glad I did. I enjoyed it (aside from gusts of wind trying to blow me off my feet) and it didn't feel difficult so I just kept on going and consequently completed my longest ever run! Now looking forward to becoming a human burrito on the sofa for the rest of the day.

So, I was kind of despondent on Thursday. I did not do as well as I would have liked on my marathon. I gained some weight back this year ( although I am still much lighter than I used to be ). I have been battling insomnia this week and my 4 am insomnia run on Wednesday was a sweat fest because it was 78 degrees F and 95% humidity.... pre-summer. Ewwwww. I literally was about to give up on running.
Well last night, hell (AKA Texas) froze over! It is not pre-summer after all!!! Hooray!!! Frozen stuff fell on my head during my 30 degree F run this morning. I didn’t even mind the stingy ice pellet parts.

I'm pretty sure post-marathon blues is a normal thing after such a big event in your life (even if it goes well). It helps to reflect on your experience and set some new goals going forward. Don't give up!6 -

Yeah, I feel ya. Today I did NOT get to run 1.7 miles home from the gym, or at least, I chose to walk it instead. Not because of the cold, but because we got a bunch of snow and the thought of running on unevenly packed down snowy sidewalks and over snow-and-ice-mounded curbs and across slushy streets and so on and so forth for a dozen blocks was just too much. The workout at the gym was kind of rough, too - I've been sick and ended up out of breath really quickly. I tried not to be grumpy about it, but I was grumpy about it. For whatever reason the vibe of the class seemed more "get done and get out" than other times I've been there, but that could have been just me.
So my mileage for the month remains 3.8 from my run last weekend, and I'm not even on the board yet for this week, though I'm feeling optimistic about getting around at least one of the lakes on Sunday. Maybe two if I'm feeling wacky!
That's frustrating about the run home. But great job walking home anyway - even if it doesn't count for you as a run, your feet covered the distance!1 -

Slept in a little, got my run in with beautiful Spring-like weather and clear sidewalks(!) and am now chilling with my family for the rest of the day. Making some beet-veggie soup (like Ukrainian barszcz/borscht) and trying to get some progress on the quilt I've got in the frame.I frequently take a picture at this spot in the route. The sky is pretty, and maybe my subconscious is looking for a break from the long uphill running.OTHER CARDIO:

Two years ago I did an interview with Men's Health where I mentioned trying to qualify for Boston. I'm no longer trying to qualify -- I'm not fast enough. I'd have to run a 3:05 full marathon and I honestly don't think I'm strong enough to pull off that time, probably due to the fact that I constantly eat like the world is coming to an end. Furthermore, the pace of an ultra marathon is very different from that of a traditional marathon or half marathon. If marathoners are cheetahs, ultra marathoners are more like overly-caffeinated mountain goats. We don't sprint through the savannah, we methodically trudge over mountains while eating everything in sight.
That is my kind of runner!15 -

We don't sprint through the savannah, we methodically trudge over mountains while eating everything in sight.
Ok, I think I need to be an ultra marathoner. Possibly one that covers about a quarter of their distances 😂

Temperature in the mid-teens F today with half an inch of fresh snow overnight. Just tried to relax today and enjoy being out. Won't be long before I'm complaining about the heat...

We got snow yesterday and today! I don't particularly like the fact that no one seems to remember how to drive in the stuff, but it sure is pretty. I put on my snow gear (pants and boots) and took the dogs out for a walk. We went almost a mile-and-a-half, in just over half an hour. After taking their gear off, and half of mine, I went back out and shoveled snow for an hour. Our neighbor came home when I was almost done and we caught up a bit, then he helped me finish up. Now I'm beat. Starving! And desperately need a shower!!8

So I tried the chocolate raspberry and berries/pomegranate flavors today at 1 and 2 hours into my run and YUM. They went down really easy texture-wise, and the flavors were great, and I think the extra dose of sodium really did help.
@kristinegift I am a fan of the Apple -Cinnamon ( tastes like apple pie ) and the Strawberry. Don't know if they have them in the + version with higher sodium.
@juliet3455 The apple cinnamon is only in the regular gel version, but I may add that one in to the mix too. I've had it once before and it was really tasty!0 -
I set out to do 9 miles today (I normally do 50% of my long run mileage the day before or after my long run, depending on how my schedule works out) but felt SO GOOD that I tacked on a bit extra. It was like my legs totally forgot they already ran 18 miles yesterday, and they felt totally fresh and ready to go. My cadence was a nice clip, my HR was relatively low (avg mid-140s), and my pace was consistent and even got quicker the last few miles (thanks, down-hills and tail-wind!). I was very surprised to feel this good today. I was whining about even getting out because it was 25 degrees cooler today than yesterday (52F yesterday, 27F today) and really windy, but it ended up being a great run.
Good luck to the racers this weekend! Almost a dozen people from my Princeton running group are in Phoenix for the marathon/half marathon and they are catching PRs all over the place! Super jazzed for them!

Race Report Time...
Whew. Today did not start off well. It's been a horribly stressful week, and, as I mentioned in my last post, I haven't been sleeping well. The only run I got in all week was my crappy 1.5 miles of treadmill struggle on Thursday. When my alarm went off at 4:00 this morning, I very nearly turned it off and laid back down. But I finally convinced myself that I shouldn't let my entry fee go to waste. I drug myself out of bed and dressed, got myself and all the animals fed, and managed to get to the race site with about 10 minutes to spare to pick up my packet and get myself together before the start.
On Thursday, it was 82 degrees here. When I arrived at the race, it was 41 degrees and overcast. Ugh. But this was a Mardi Gras themed race, and the music and energy quickly started improving my spirits. As I looked around, I realized it was going to be a very small race (maybe 15-20 participants, best I could tell), and there was going to be a vehicle following the racers.
I immediately started to get anxious that I was going to fall way behind and spend the whole race being tailed by that car. To add to my nerves, I just got a new iPhone XS this week and didn't realize until I got to the race that this model doesn't have a headphone jack. I usually use MapMyRun to provide pace updates and keep myself on track but resigned myself to running on instinct today. Except that I ALSO apparently don't know how to fully mute this new phone, which I realized 0.25 miles in when my pace update was broadcast from my pocket to the entire race pack. Anxiety level = 1000.
But, soon, I realized that I wasn't just staying with the pack - I was passing people! Soon I found myself running in the first half of our (admittedly small) group. My pace updates were telling my that I was absolutely FLYING (by my standards) - and I didn't feel like I was going to die! About halfway through, I realized that I was on track for a sub-30 minute 5k and started second guessing my app, especially because it was also indicating that I had run a bit further than I expected for that point in the race.
As soon as the finish line came into sight, I realized that MapMyRun wasn't that crazy after all. Official results haven't been posted yet, but I think I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30:20 on the clock when I crossed the line! There were no age group awards (other than youth/adult splits) at this race, but, best I could tell, I was the 3rd or 4th woman to finish. Small race or not, that's a huge achievement for me. My 2018 finish times for 5k races were 38:40 (April), 39:16 (May), 38:14 (June), and 36:17 (October). This was a SIX MINUTE improvement on my 5k PR! Holy cow. I'm thrilled, to say the least.
MapMyRun and my Fitbit both think the course was about 3.5 miles, not 3.1, and that I ran for about 32 minutes rather than 30. Either way, that's a sub-10 minute/mile pace, so I'm not going to complain. But I'm absolutely logging the mileage as 3.5. Lol.

Surgery knee feeling good. Only strange thing I had was a bit of pain in the center of the kneecap. I went to prod/massage it, pain went away and now there's an itchy sensation. Remembering what the surgeon said, I'm hoping it's a sign that my knee is still healing, even though it's been 2 years since the surgery.9 -

I planned to meet up for long run this morning at 8am. The wind seemed to have died down somewhat but it was snowing - the kind of fine snow you almost can't see. I actually wondered why the sky/air looked so white for longer than I care to admit before I realized it was actively snowing. I got my coffee and breakfast and started to steel myself for a miserably cold long run when I saw people posting on facebook NOT to run the lake trails this morning because they were a sheet of ice covered with powdery snow. Then one of my friends texted that she and another friend had already gone out and they both fell and were bailing on the run. That was enough incentive for me to bail as well and stay on the couch for a while longer.
I decided to go to the gym and do at least an hour on the treadmill and maybe do the long run tomorrow. At an hour in I learned the treadmills don't let you set the time for more than an hour so I stopped and took a bathroom break. Then I thought to myself that I was already more than 5 miles in and it would be better to finish the run today than start from 0 again tomorrow under who knows what conditions. I felt pretty good so I jumped back on, cranked the tunes up again, and tried to mentally zone out and just run. Mostly it worked. The last mile I kept pushing up the pace so I could get this kitten done before I lost my mind. Otherwise known as last mile at race pace. And thank the lord, it was finally over.
That was 4 miles more than I'd ever run on a treadmill at one time. It's no marathon in your basement but I am pretty proud I made it through. And then I stopped at Chipotle and scarfed down a burrito bowl to celebrate.
Push-up challenge - did just 5 assisted pull-ups when I was done running. Might try some more later at home.13 -
@greyparks206 Congrats on your amazing PR! Lol at your phone situation - mine always seems like it goes off broadcasting my split pace just as I pass some really fast people going the other way, when I am running extra slow.
@somethingsoright It takes nerves forever to regrow - the nerves at the surgery site in my thumb still do weird things if I knead them, 25 years later. It sounds like you may be feeling nerves healing.4
