Hi Gals,
Someone suggested blown in insulation, while my research says that is probably the best idea, it’s an all at one time thing, I am hoping to afford one or 2 rolls of insulation a year and climb up and roll it out – start at one end of the house and slowly work my way back to the entrance to the ceiling crawl space, I am not real fond of tight spaces, so am a bit apprehensive of getting up there to do it. But heck I can power through this too! And it will be the way that fits into my budget best!

3 more new clients today- hip hip hooray! I have a whole week + of embroidery to do – happy for the rain. I realized I was in a bit of a funk with my last post. I really need to realize that things are really good, for the last 8 years I have had to really tighten my belt, wipe out my savings and put stuff on credit between January and May and then make it back up in June- December. Well this January I did not use my credit card or my savings, so while I am worried about future now is taking care of itself! I do need to plan for the future but not forget to celebrate now.

I have been smiling at the stress eating comments so this is when I eat – Happy=eat; Sad=eat, stressed=eat, tired=eat, rested= eat, feeling loved=eat, feeling lonely=eat….I could go on but basically it is _______=eat! No wonder I have weight to lose! LOL
I'm one of the (apparently) weird ones who can't eat when I'm really stressed, and forgets to eat when I'm really busy.
Taking uni courses can be good for me in that regard because as my stress level goes up, my appetite goes down, and as my busy-ness goes up, I forget about eating.
I do that at work sometimes. I don't eat breakfast, I will usually remember to have a nibble at 10:30 (crackers & cheese or a banana), but then I can get busy with stuff and all of a sudden it's nearly 3 pm, and I haven't eaten anything. And I'm wondering why I'm having trouble focusing or I'm feeling cranky.

Wild wind today, power out for an hour (thank Goodness for the wood stove), the storm cycles were fun to watch. For awhile it was sunny and calm up here on our hill but the white caps on the ocean told us every time more wind was coming. Then snow! Only a few inches and temps still mild but SNOW on the coast? SMH ;}
Strange thing happened during SWSY. Down on the mat did first set of side leg lifts, and during the rest period between sets, drifted off to sleep? Woke up to hear the leader saying "Up for 5..." Whoa how did that happen?
Thursday's lunch/work session with fire chief had unexpected benefits. He and Joe walked around the yard getting acquainted, and Joe learned that limbing the trees up to 12 feet would NOT hurt the trees and would vastly improve our fire safety. Now he's adopted that as his project for when the weather warms. This is what comes of finding a trusted male to transmit messages that hubs won't hear from wifey. I dislike playing such manipulative games, but when needs must... As we were walking into the garage, Joe pointed out my aunt Elsie's 1952 Wedgewood stove, converted from gas to propane. When I said we were afraid to bring in propane due to fire risk, Chief said there's nothing wrong with having propane, go ahead. Joe agreed! Hooray!!! Won't be able to afford the total kitchen remodel I want, but might be able to do a little shifting to bring the stove and propane in for not too much $$. Want to enjoy the stove while I can still cook (and really hate Hate HATE cooking on electric stove. ) Today the tree guy came and will take the 5 tan oaks down for $650, much better than the $1800 estimate I heard earlier.

I managed my machines, plus mat work, plus half my push ups and a tiny bit of weights. Could have done more, but decided to ease into it. We are babysitting this pm, so will leave here early to pick up some shopping we can't buy locally. A bit more walking.
In a programme on our tv the doctors and Michael Moseley pointed out that the 10,000 steps thing is just some random number dreamt up by a Japanese manufacturer of pedometers. The programme's research found it's far better to do three 10 minute bursts of faster walking that makes you slightly out of breath during the day. Leslie Sansome would be good for that.
I'm a bit apprehensive about this afternoon as three children of different ages for three and a half hours is not my idea of fun. Max can get a bit silly and disruptive as we have to pay attention to the little ones. We could split them up, but DH is the star attraction and everyone wants to play with him. We may break the rules and allow Max screen time. If the weather was better we could go out, but generally they are not keen on trailing around in the wind and rain!!!
I'm sure it will all work out.
I've cooked a lamb, lentil and spinach curry for when we get home. All I've got to do is wilt the spinach into it. Funny cooking a curry at 7.30 in the morning.

I am up and having my tea.. I indulged in a piece of fried chicken yesterday and a little wing.. and it wasn't KFC ,it was just ok. put the rest in the freezer.. stepped on the scale this morning thinking with the sodium I would have ballooned up, didnt lose or gain.. so thats ok in my book..
have a physical on thursday.. and the thursday after that... colonoscopy... whooo hooo. oh well has to be done..
going down to feed DFIL and then home for the day to work on cleaning this place up...1 -

Good morning all! Happy Sunday! My last kid left last night at 10:30 and I was in bed by 11:00. Fell asleep with the luxurious feeling of not having to set my alarm clock and being able to sleep in. Guess who woke up at 5:30, anyway? I laid in bed until 6am trying to sleep; but my brain and body was having none of that. So baggy sweater and yoga pants on, coffee beside me and I am here.
Not sure what is going on with my knee, but after grocery shopping yesterday I have had a pain (coming and going) right below the knee. I must have pulled something and not realized it? But it is not all of the time. No swelling. Maybe I just need to spend the day off my leg? lol That is my plan for the day, actually. I may grab my leg brace and put that on, just to give some support and stability on that leg when I walk around today.
Lanette- Ever since Joaquin had to get the helmet, my brain has been more "aware" of babies in helmets. Joaquin's helmet is stored, now. Though we enjoy looking at the baby pics of him wearing it. Never phased him at all.
Karen VA- Olivia! I knew her birthday was coming up! Janet's Mia should be turning two soon as well! Such a sweet face! Those eyes!
Barbie- I love the way you are committed to your 10,000 steps. I giggled when I visualized you fervently walking in the house to get them in before bed. When I commit myself to something I am the same way, and I can't let it go because my brain will nag about it. But, most times it is worth the effort just to get your brain to say, "OKay! We're good!" Shoveling is a huge work out and it IS listed in the exercises on mfp. With the looks of that snow (it looks wet and heavy) it is a big calorie burner. You will probably feel every muscle you used, tomorrow.
Heather- So happy to hear you are getting back to your normal routines! Having just moved into your new place, you might not have any "recycle" type materials lying around; but if you had any cardboard or empty oatmeal containers, tp tubes, paper towel tubes, etc.; sometimes the kids like to create things with it (or at the very least make a road with ramps and tunnels for little cars to travel through). You could also make some playdoh, give them cookie cutters, rollers, etc and let them play with that. The recipe I use is: In a pan, MIX 1 c flour, 2t cream of tartar, 1/2 c salt, 1 pkg unsweetened kool-aid (optional for color and scent); ADD 1T cooking oil, 1 c water. Mix well and cook over medium heat until the mixture forms a ball. Place on a clean surface and carefully (because it is hot) knead until cool. It will stay fresh in an airtight container for many months.
Like you, I would rather be outside with the kids. I think it is more enjoyable for all of us; but just thought I would toss a couple of suggestions for inside activities your way. I am sure you will have a fun day together! Love that DH is their favorite play thing!

Barbara- FIRST, falling asleep during your workout (so quickly) is concerning? Are you sure you fell asleep and didn't pass out? SECONDLY, Yea for Joe taking the advice of the fireman in regards to the tree trimming and the stove! lol Men are weird!
Beth and Karen NY- We have had to pay in $6-10K every year, due to my daycare business. We actually have a savings account set aside specifically for tax time. WE haven't gotten a return in many, many years. This year I shouldn't be paying as much because we are only factoring in my income. BUT, we also have had nothing to put into the tax savings; so we will have to go on a payment plan with the IRS.
Kim- I got a giggle from your all encompassing emotional eating. I think about food all of the time; so I could easily be an all emotion eater. But I can resist, most of the time. I AM a big stress eater, though. That is the hardest time for me to resist food. Unfortunately, that is also the emotion that tells our body we are in trouble and need to hang onto and store all calories. Ugh!
Pip- Why the sweaters on the pups in the snow? Is it to keep them from getting too cold? Too snowy? They look like they are enjoying it all! Shoveling is a great alternative to a gym work out. I have a good sized driveway (can fit 10-12 cars), so I know I am getting in some walking, plus the pushing and lifting of the snow is equal to some great weight/reisitance work outs. Have fun!

I turn 52 next month and so far my Dr hasn't suggested I should go for my first one.
She did however suggest I should do the mail-in thing some time soonish. That I shouldn't leave it too long.

Heather, I'm happy to hear that you are feeling well enough to get back to most of your regular exercise routine and having a visit with the grands.

It won't start snowing again til midday so I'm going to venture out on a slightly longer walk than yesterday. Thank you to whomever reminded me that walking in snow is a good calorie burn and good calf exercise.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
Cranky, achy, and impatient with the recovery process on this rainy morning. Patience has never been my strong suit! Really looking forward to going back to work tomorrow ("going back" entails working in my home office, so no driving).
On the subject of colonoscopies, I've done the mail-in thingie (and isn't THAT fun) every other year for the last six years... they do tend to stick in your memory. At some point, they'll make me do the full-blown colonoscopy. Not looking forward to that.
Kim - you are an amazing and resourceful person, and have such a gift for finding the silver lining. I always love seeing you post, and I'm pretty sure I want to be you when I grow up.
So, to channel Kim (seriously, do NOT open the spoiler if you're squeamish), the gist of the spoiler, for those who don't like blood and gore, is I'm lucky to live in a time when I can have this done, and I just need to get on with it.:Five days ago, they made an eight-inch cut in my leg, peeled my kneecap out, sawed off both ends of the bones, and glued metal replacement ends on each bone and behind the kneecap. Your body doesn't LIKE it when you make massive incisions, and do these things to it. Five days ago, after he got done replacing the ends, this is what the surgeon was looking at:
Today, I am literally walking around my house using the same knee they sliced open and fixed. The fact that I can do that at all is nothing short of miraculous. Just one hundred years ago, a) my life expectancy was only 56 years, so I wouldn't be around, and b) had I lived to the grand old age of 58, nearly 59, nothing could have been done to make the remainder of my life even remotely less pain-filled. It's time to get over it, do the work, recover as quickly as humanly possible, and get on with my recovery with fewer complaints.
Okay, I feel better now. Small doses of the reality of the situation are helpful.

Barbie - our snow total was around 5" and it "settled" during the day yesterday so our private road was slushy in places. It's 22 outside right now so it's back to "crunchy". You are doing a great job getting in your steps! And walking outside in snow has to be burning lots of calories. Forecast here this afternoon/evening is additional 1 to 3 inches.
Kim - I smiled at your description of the reasons to eat: _______=eat. I think that's me too, lol.
Our dogs are wearing their sweaters inside and out these past few days. The weather was so nice when I took them to be groomed a few weeks ago, I said "clip them short". Welp. But, one of the good things about them being clipped right now is their legs don't pick up snowballs.
Pip - loved your photos of your walk in the snow! I'm hesitant to venture out very far in this snow/possible ice - not because of the cold, I don't want to risk falling on my GOOD shoulder and messing it up. So am content to be home-bound for a few days.
Put my thawing shoulder through the torture yesterday. Really worked over the painful spots= acupressure. Push on them until I'm ready to throw up. Push a weight up over my head and hold it until I'm ready to throw up. Pull left arm behind my back until I'm ready to throw up. Lisa, thinking of you the whole time. EDIT- amazing what docs can do with some plastic and hardware that really improves a person's quality of life for decades. Glad you had it done. Can you believe that photo is of your knee? Amazing.
Barbara - you fell asleep on the floor doing your SWSY? You must have a comfy floor. A couple days ago my DH was sitting on the couch and got sleepy, I told him to kick the dog off and stretch out. He didn't and all of a sudden he just tipped over sideways on it. Kind of scared me - he was breathing normally so I just let him be for a few minutes then gradually made a wee bit of noise so see if he'd wake up. He did and was fine. If he does it again I'm going to worry. Glad you got your trees cut at a good price. Interesting about trimming up the evergreens for fire prevention - we purchased some property that was once a tree farm that are trimmed up like that and now we know why.

Re taxes - pleasant surprise that only a small portion of our social security income was taxable which brought our AGI (adjusted gross income) way down. 2018 was our first year of me drawing social security the whole year and not working. Our county property taxes are on the way back up thanks to the great economy here, mixed blessing. Good if we have to sell, bad if we have to buy. Another reason for staying put as long as we can.
Making chicken & veg curry today. Have half of a rotisserie chicken in the fridge so will dice that up and add loads of veggies and a can of drained chickpeas. Have a delicata squash I'll peel and dice up to add as well. I used up all my small pyrex freezer containers to store frozen lentil soup. So will use wide-mouth canning jars to freeze the excess curry now that I'm getting some room in the big freezer.
Beth - that's a good looking vegetable box! Looks tons better than a lot of the #1 stuff available in the stores these days.
Sun coming up. Time to enjoy the sunrise and our winter wonderland...

New here! Love all the comments. I am back to MFP! After a few years of maintaining my goal weight, 6 lbs crept back up on me. I do not want to have to buy new clothes! I attribute the gain to stress (mom with dementia moving in with me), cold weather (can't run outside), and most recently, recovering from a cold. Sugar is my weakness. My snack calories are out of control.

Barbie: So far our fireplace is not fixed. The repairmen are looking for parts, and they are hard to find. We hope we won’t have to replace the whole thing, but it is a possibility. :ohwell: Our snow is nearly gone. There are a few small patches left in shady spots.

Heather: The 10,000 steps thing has always sounded like a good way to sell pedometers, to me. I think the doctors and MIchael Moseley are right. Three 10 minute bursts of fster walking sounds much more healthful and productive.
KJLaMore: I’m sorry to hear about your knee pain. I seem to have a low level of it all the time due to an over use injury several years ago. My left knee is the one that I hurt all those years ago. If I take off enough weight it doesn’t hurt. Right now I need to take a little off. :ohwell:
M in OZ: I do the mail in test annually. It doesn’t take much effort, I don’t have to stay in a hotel near a colonoscopy center, and I don’t have to take that horrid colonoscopy prep. I win all the way around. I am glad that I got the baseline done all those years ago, but I don’t plan to repeat it. :bigsmile:
Lisa: Thanks for sharing your knee photo. I’m glad to know what things look like during the surgery. I suspect you will do very well.
Lanette: I like staying put, too. I like where we live.
I had news from DS yesterday, and I’m working on acceptance. He’s being reassigned to the DC area. He was on loan from Fort Lewis for the past few years. I’ve been hoping he would be transferred back. It appears that is not going to happen and all of my children & grandchildren will be thousands of miles away forever. I'm having a bit of a self-pity party and it isn't any fun.

This seems like a great discussion page. I am over 50, single and trying to lose some weight that has crept up on me, eat better (lose the sugar!)cand learn how to get exercise into my life on a regular basis. I lost the somewhat easier first 5 pounds (should tell you how i was eating:)) and trying to lose a second 5 pounds by the end of February- thinking 2lbs/week is a healthy goal. Following everyones lead:

Yes, I know that 10,000 steps is a gimmick and an arbitrary number but it's a resolution I make for myself just like drinking 8 cups of water. I feel better when I accomplish what I say I'm going to do. And, yes, I am obsessed and have a hard time giving myself a break.
This morning I shoveled a path from the back gate to the road. It will allow the dogs another place to walk and allowed me to get to the road where I could walk a few blocks. There is ice on the road where they have been plowed but no one was driving on them at 6:30 AM and I walked carefully. I came home when my hands got cold. I'll go out again later.
I walked to my walking friend's house. She has not walked outside since it snowed. I took a picture and sent it to her to show her that if she could get to the street, we could meet for a walk.
