WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR FEBRUARY 2019

Rebecca - beautiful snow! It started falling here around 1:30.
I had an early lunch in town this morning with a girlfriend, so hit Walmart at 9. WOW, long lines with carts piled high. Looked like Christmas. I only had a few items and managed to be first in line at the customer service desk.
After lunch, stopped at Safeway - same thing, only they have a smaller parking lot so I had to drive around for a few minutes. The "cheap" bread was gone, still plenty of milk left, only a couple bags of romaine left. That was 11:30 so shelves are probably bare now.
But we are all set for at least a week - and the weather report is calling for snow the next ten days. Am I somehow back in northern Indiana? lol.
Margaret - kids! Is this the son you are buying the house with?
Lisa - thank you for your thoughts on eating, diet, etc. After years of having an un-natural relationship with food, it has taken some effort for me to see it for what it should be - nourishment, plain and simple.
Machka - glad that brain cyst doesn't appear to be troublesome. Is the PT the plan for getting your hip tendons/ligaments all tuned up - do they want you to take any medication? I've fallen behind on my frozen shoulder exercises, that and the cold weather is making it hurt I think. Aggravating to have pain and reduced movement in limbs and joints we once used without thinking twice - in your case, even walking. Grateful there is physical therapy to help us heal. Takes so darn long tho.
Kelly - my 6 month old grand-niece in Indiana is going to have to wear a helmet! Maybe I can get my brother to paint Indiana U colors on it. What happened to Joaquin's Notre Dame helmet?
Karen in VA -- that picture of the grands is just thrilling! Look at those dimples! And baby brother isn't a baby anymore, lol.
Sue and all of you Pacific NW ladies - dig out your boots and throw an extra blanket on the bed. We are in for it, lol.
I need to bring in the hummingbird feeder. It's about 32f out right now, I have 3 little hummers fighting over it but it's getting dark. Katla, we had a feeder that attached to the window at our previous house - at this house, I can't reach the windows because it's on a pretty tall foundation and the ones I can reach - we keep the blinds down all the time and they are windows we don't normally look out of much anyhow. I can at least see this hanging feeder from my kitchen window.
Tomorrow is Saturday! have a good evening.

Stress eating also puzzles me. Don't other people's stomachs shut down entirely when they get stressed? You can tell when I'm feeling somewhat more relaxed about things because that's when I'll eat more.
M in Oz
Nope. Unless I am honestly weighing and logging everything that goes in my mouth, stress makes me empty the pantry and the fridge directly in my mouth.
Okie5 -
okiewoman510 wrote: »Lisa - Very well said. I would add that being honest with yourself is one of the most important parts also. I see so many people say I just can't get my weight down the last few pounds. I am logging everything, I don't understand why the scale won't move. If you are using measuring cups and spoons (or even worse, eyeballing your portions) instead of a food scale, or generalizing and logging that you are eating half a medium apple, then you are not being honest with yourself about what you are eating. A medium apple to me is not the same as a medium apple to the next person. However, eating 25 grams of a red delicious apple is the same for everyone and lets you know what you are really consuming so that you can get your calories within the range they need to be in to lose those pounds that "just aren't coming off for no reason".
Just my two cents.
Okie in the TX Hill Country where we are having snow flurries!!!
Agreed!!
When I start weighing everything with my food scale and sticking to it all the time, 24-hours a day, 7 days a week ... the weight drops off.
I would also add that a lot of people I hear, at work and elsewhere, over estimate their calorie burn. They do something a little more than usual ... like let's stay climbing 5 flights of stairs back up to our office after a fire drill rather than waiting for the lift ... and announce that they must have burned about 500 calories and should be able to eat a caramel slice with lunch today!
When I log my exercise, I tend to round down. Then when I was on a mission to lose weight, I ate about half my exercise calories back. And that seemed to work too.
Machka in Oz
My calorie burn is exactly what it is. I use a chest strap heart rate monitor. I don't use what an exercise machine says or what map would say. I override and enter what my monitor says.3 -

I have my appointment with my PT on Wednesday and she'll go over everything in more detail. She just rang me with the results that there was no break but there were other issues.
I don't imagine there will be medication ... aside from panadol.

There were a few snowflakes when Jake drove me to teach my line dance class at 9 AM. Class was small. By 10 AM people who lived uphill or farther west were getting phone calls from home telling them that it was time to drive home. I started with 22 students and at 11:15 there were only 10. We have an all wheel drive Subaru and Jake is an excellent and experienced snow driver but it took us twice as long to drive home as usual. We passed a few cars that had gone into the ditch. Schools were closed about 10:30 so there were school buses on the roads and children being picked up at the school on our route. My electric bathroom heater sparked when I turned it on this morning so we declared it ready for the trash and Jake bought me a new one at Wal Mart after he dropped me off at dance.
The dogs were not happy in snow above their knees. Bessie didn't last long outside. Sasha tried walking across the street, down the street, and around the front of the house before asking to come back in. It is expected to keep snowing until tomorrow afternoon.

I'm in the midst of a 4-day weekend.
It's a long weekend here, but I took an extra day just because I could.
So far, we've done more sleeping than anticipated ... but I think there are times in life where that is what's needed.

If I'm super busy and distracted, I'll eat more or higher calories because I tend to go for convenience food. I tend to gain weight when there's a combination of moving house and health issues all in about a 6 month period of time. Health issues slow down my exercise attempts and moving house is stressful, plus the need for convenience food increases.
But if I'm truly stressed, I stop eating all together. I lost about 4 kg in the first week to 10 days after my husband's accident last year because I just couldn't put anything into my stomach without feeling like I was going to throw up.
M in Oz3 -
Ok I attempted to go out to get mail, but slid, so I turned around and came back inside. Husband takes the keys, and proceeds to slide, fall down into the slopes part of the sidewalk! He was laughing, wasn't hurt, and was quite entertaining!

B4 leaving: Welcome!!! :flowerforyou:
Rebecca: We have snow too, but you have more. Beautiful!!!!
Sue: We have snow but we probably don’t have as nearly *kitten* much as you do. Our front walkway is looking slushy right now and will likely be icey in the morning. :ohwell:
The snow on our lawn and flowerbeds is still snow, but it has melted on the sidewalks. I suspect they’ll be icy in the morning. I don’t plan to go anywhere unless there is no hidden ice on the sidewalks & roads.
I called a dear friend today because I haven't heard from her in a long while. She is in a nursing home with serious health problems and may be looking at surgery, again. I'm glad I thought to call her, but sorry she's having a hard time. I'll be keeping her in my prayers.
Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon7 -
Hi Gals,
Katla – Hairy Bikers do have cookbooks and they have at least 2 diet ones… I have one and I gave a friend that rides another one, everything I’ve tried I liked.
Janet in eastern MO – sorry to hear of the passing of Brat and Peanut.
Margaret – so fun to hear your voice!
Karen – wow the kids warmed all our hearts!
Tracey in Edmonton and
Allie – So I heard about an app for your phone that made me think of you both it is called WAG and it works on a smart phone you make your profile, and clients make theirs and then it matches you for dog walks in what ever area you specify. I have not used it but have a client that does and she loves it. Earns about $700 a month – won’t get rich that way, but as a bit extra and getting paid for exercising ! When a client requests you, then you can say yes or no.. and after the walk put in comments…
Lisa – big smiles that surgery is done, and on the correct knee! You are a trooper and will power through the recovery.. I had a full ACL replacement a number of years ago, and doing the physical therapy was the key.
Heather – ((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))
All the pet pictures make me smile !
Machka – I am so glad to hear you don’t have a broken hip! But tendons are slow healers, you will have to be patient with yourself. Hang in there, vent here all you need to.!
Kylia – So glad to hear all the good news about Aubrey - and hugs and good thoughts for your Aunt.
Pip - You so nailed it – and the usual is easy to have something little change for a few days that makes the usual just a bit off and that will do it.
Beth – Grrr! Great job on not hitting the stress eating pantry
Rebecca – so glad to hear both you and hubby are ok!
The bay area has been very cold for us, below 35 a few nights – very thankful for my pal Levi who cuddles right up and sleeps with me. I have so many dreams for my home, but one of them is new insulation. The homes in this area are not insulated like those of you in colder climates, but even for CA my home is under insulated; it was built in the early 1960’s and the only updating to “insulation” is I did upgrade the windows to double paned. I’d love to add insulation to the ceiling, floor and walls… but I keep saving!
The morning gardening jobs are a bit of a challenge – gardening when it is under 40 is just darn cold! But I’m earning money when I am doing it and next week it is to rain all week! I can do some things, but it is limited.
I’m a bit frustrated with the financial thing – I was just seeing my way to more stability and then some dork pushed pulse on the blender I am living in! one regular gardening job cut in half, camp is laying us off as of may 31, one of my two embroidery machines just broke ($300 plus a full day of my time to replace some parts), $150 repair to my vacuum – the dog needs a regular vet visit, the car a tune up… and the list goes marching on. But the up side ! The embroidery business continues to flourish; and I am fitting in some gardening in my own yard, with the hope of getting it back to it’s glory days.

Were you using your phone, and did you:
a) Attempt to put in a "smilie" or
b) shift your phone's position at all, even just a little bit?
If so, that's why it would have disappeared. MFP is touchy that way.

Karen - so great to see the flourishing grandkids!
Feeling much less chesty this morning.
I weighed myself and have gained about one pound. That's great with the reduced exercise. I'm still under my target weight by a couple of pounds. I did cut back on calories when I couldn't burn them off, but went into maintenance mode. Still, I'm very happy.

Skimming trying to catch up
Heather (((hugs))) for you and your friend. On a lighter note, had to chuckle at the Marmite  labels art. Tasted it once. More than enough
Kylia joyous news about Aubrey, prayers continue and now added for auntie. So frustrating when husbands won't listen to wives... but wise of us to find trusted males to get the message through.
Katla was Ma Kettle played by Margery Maine (sp?) Ah yes I see Evelyn knew that!
Rori "seat warmers" Amen! First had in Idaho, can't imagine doing without even here in mild coastal weather. Great for sore achy back and butt, almost like a massage
Machka hoping that torn tendons are indeed better news than broken hip.
Lisa glad you're taking pain pills, honestly believe they make the movement you need to do possible. Also believe it's best to take exactly as prescribed, to achieve a level and maintain it. Trying to do without, then having to take some makes it takes longer and more to achieve the needed effect.
wessecg are you Cheri? 4 even 6 weeks is way too young imho... 8 week minimum! Wish we'd gotten Tumble at 8 weeks though, at 4 months she was already fearful.
Sharon Owwww!
pip you speak truth!
allie it must be going around... let myself get sucked into Angie's List ad and Monday someone will be here to give an estimate on redoing our floors and kitchen. The reality is we probably can't afford it this year, not with the tree removal expense, estimate coming tomorrow... Will you post a pic of your lights?
Margaret fabulous Ice sculptures! Needed a pic of the ice princess surveying the art
Beth Grr. Medical groups blackballing patients over billing office errors? In this day of ridiculously complicated medical coding it could happen to any of us. Such a long way from the "Do No Harm." part of the oath...
Vickie Grr again for false injury claim. Hope your premium increase isn't as big as you fear.
Sue and Lanette love the goat hauling car images Really the snowy labradoodle pic and up lifting T shirt!
Welcome Jules!
Only through pg 19 but time to sleep. Hope to catch up more tomorrow, and share a Joe Listening story ;}

Hi all just checking in, still have at least 5 pages to catch up on.
Heather sorry to hear about your friend.
Sharon sorry to hear you have shingles, my mum had a bad bout of shingles a few years ago, all around her back and under her bust, she couldn't wear a bra because of the pain. I remember putting cream on her back and it was scarlet red - I've never seen anything like it. I hope you only have a mild case and nothing as bad as that.
Yeay for Aubrey going home, she's adorable.
Lots more I wanted to say, but I forgot to take notes, so hugs to the person who had to have their cat put to sleep. It's never an easy thing to do.
Loved the photo's of horses (beautiful eyes) little puppies and snowy scenes etc.
Thinking of you all, but I'd better get off the computer and get some work done, so much for limiting my time on it
Take care everyone

Morning all,
Day 4 post-op - making good progress, the physical therapist and the nurse were both pleased. There's no pain on weight-bearing for the knee (not surprising, all the ouchy stuff that supports weight has been replaced with metal and plastic.) However, the muscles and tendons around the knee are screaming like mad. Flexing and bending is... well let's just leave it at painful. Even with a full load of painkillers onboard, I was shaking by the time Corey got home, and my whole mouth was hurting from clenching my jaw during PT. Can now walk (carefully) around the house without a walker, but I keep it near me, as if I have to carry anything, even a cup of coffee, it throws off my balance, and falling is not a good idea.
On the bright side, I can see progress already-- my knee bend has progressed from 67 degrees to somewhere around 80 since yesterday. Will see the PT Tuesdays and Fridays for the next five weeks, and will do two home sessions every day she's not here. Right now, my main aim is that, by the time my appointment with the surgeon rolls around (the 18th), I will be able to move my leg well enough to drive safely, or Corey will have to drive me to my appointment. Other mini-goal, stop having to take Miralax, but at the moment, still necessary.
Love the snow, and the animals, and the grandbaby pics, keep 'em coming! I smile every morning at this thread--you are all such a bright spot in my life!
Love y'all,

Good day ladies!
Yesterday was an off day....I was in bed at 9 after falling asleep in chair at 8. I was short steps by 1400, short water by 24oz, did have 2 hours of activity, but not consistent to count as exercise. The upside is I was under calories. Which surprised me when I finally logged it all. Today is a new day!
Changes in pricing being implemented at work. I am sure we will get some grief, but some prices haven't changed in over 3 years in spite of increases in costs. I tend to keep the front of the shop clean. But the back-omg! The two mechanics were cleaning yesterday! It looks so much better already. When I worked back there I had a routine. I emptied trash and oil buckets every day (if I skipped a day I couldn't lift them) I swept at least once a day even under the benches. Gas cans got filled every day. When I went up front mainly, I would sweep when I went back to smoke. Dont smoke now, so dont go back often. The one mechanic has been with us for 40 yrs. He is the worst when it comes to cleaning. I understand that donovan gets frustrated being the only one cleaning but i reckon i need to buckle down on the cleaning back there. If i am cleaning the guys bathroom-YUCK! Donovan will say i will do it, just tell me. SMH! Why must i tell you to clean the bathroom once a week! We aren't children. Anyhow, my necessary paperwork is all caught up at work, floors mopped. Today finish cleaning equipment on showroom. Off at 2. Then home, to clean more.
Machka- I dont eat when stressed either. Must be relaxed.
I love all the pictures, please keep sharing.
My aunt has a trach now. The nurses say she is resting comfortably and her color is better. My brother was unable to see her yesterday as she was resting. He will go back on Sunday.
Aubrey settling in well at home.
Kim in California- we had insulation blown into our brick walls and more in attic several years ago. Would highly recommend when you can.
Healing thoughts!
Welcoming thoughts!
Inspiring thoughts!
Warming thoughts!

We had about 10 inches of snow by bedtime. I shoveled an area in the back yard so the dogs didn't have to walk in snow up to their armpits. When we went out at midnight there was another four inches and I had to shovel the path again. By morning there was another four or more inches and I shoveled some more. We went out the back gate and the dogs jumped around in the deep snow outside the yard. They didn't want to stay out nearly as long as usual but they had fun. Now they are back in bed. We'll all go out later, then I'll go for a long walk by myself. Getting 10,000 steps today will be a huge challenge.7

Hi all.
I am in need of support badly! It’s literally going to save my life. I have had estrogen related cancer twice now since 2015. And with so much extra weight on me they won’t give me the estrogen blocker med bc my fat cells are releasing estrogen also!
The most successful times of weight loss in my life has always been with a personal buddy that I was accountable to daily. I thought maybe finding a group would be the next best thing or possibly even better!
I look forward to getting to know everyone and being a support to you as well! 💕
Shelle8 -
Hi Shelle - I had breast cancer, oestrogen related, and I put on loads of weight with the treatment. They still put me on the blockers though. Talk about hot flushes! With the help of this wonderful group I lost 60 lbs in 18 months and have kept 59 of them off for 5 years.
It is a lifestyle change though, not a 'diet'.
I did well this morning, managing everything except the weights and push ups. This afternoon I had to get a bit of shopping, but felt very dizzy. DH said he had exactly the same thing at the same stage of recovery, so I'm not worrying about it.
I'm going to make a Thai fish curry for dinner, using the lovely little eggplants I found at the Middle Eastern shop. I also called in at the new Chinese shop and bought frozen Dim Sum for occasional lunches.
Quiet afternoon ahead. DH is watching rugby in his study. Unfortunately we are missing the England game tomorrow because we are babysitting the grandchildren, but I will record it for him. I will finish off the newspaper and cook the curry. A lot of lying down, I hope.
The aerial that was put up when we moved in is now knocking against the wall. We have had high winds in the last couple of days so it's probably worked loose a bit. Very annoying! Especially in the bedroom. DH rang the company and they are coming on Monday, but they may charge us as it says in the small print that the fixing is not guaranteed for winds of over 60 mph.!!!
Now to have my snack of cold, roasted butternut squash with chilli sauce.
Barbara - all our family LOVE Marmite!
Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Lanette no it is our other son. Unfortunately the house we bought for other son is even further away for our other son's job. I am not sure having those two live together is for the best either.
We have talked since the argument. I know part of my blow up was caused by the bad weather. It is like when you have a near miss in an accident you have all the bent up adrenaline. We do have more bad weather ahead this week and my hope is he stays down at work that day.Others at his work that have long drives do stay at the hotel when the weather is bad, so this is an option for him if he is wise enough to take it.
Beside the worry of him getting badly hurt there is the worry of damaging his car. We have had so many accidents up here in the past couple of weeks that if something happens to his car it will take a couple of weeks to get it fixed.
I saw a fender bender as I went to work at noon yesterday due to black ice.
I hadn't been to this school for awhile. A couple of the teachers said the saw me on T.V. It is fun to share it and makes these last couple of bad weather more bearable.
Karen darling pictures!
Lanette I was able to get that photo to Facebook to share with my brother by clicking and dragging. Something new for me. He has always had dachshunds so I know he will enjoy it. Thank you.

Lanette: I just checked our hummingbird feeders and both are liquid this morning. Evidently it ddin’t get cold enough to freeze them last night. There’s snow on the lawn, but not very much. We had the hanging feeders here but this is a windy location and they spilled themselves all over the deck in the wind. That is why we switched to feeders that stick onto our windows. I have to reach above my head to refill the one by the kitchen window. I can easily reach the other from the deck. :flowerforyou:
Machka: I’ve been taught that sleep is when the body heals itself. I am also happy to know your cyst doesn’t seem to be troublesome. I love the photos of you!
Barbie: You seem to have a lot more snow than we do. There is some on the lawn and some on the sidewalk, but not enough to bother with a ruler to measure it. I am am grateful to be warm and cozy inside. The furnace works well but our gas fireplace is not currently working. The repairman is supposed to be here today. Keeping my fingers crossed that he gets here.
Kim: WAG sounds like a great idea. I’m happy that you enjoy your Hairy Biker’s cookbook. I hope that your financial situation improves this spring and gets back to a comfortable zone for you.
Karen: I love the photos of your grandchildren.
Lisa: I’m delighted to hear that your recovery is going well. That is very good news.
Shelle: You’ve found a great group of supportive women. Post often to geive and get support. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Perhaps the aerial was not adequately supported with guywires. I would ask them to be doubly sure so that this doesn’t happen again. :grumble:
We have snow on the ground, but not very much. It seems like a good idea to stay inside anyway. A few years ago I decided to take my dog for a walk in the snow, slipped on unseen ice under the snow and broke my wrist. It was the second time I’d broken a wrist due to unseen ice. I’d just as soon skip the broken wrist this time around.
